Anorexia NervosaA disorder in which one avoids food at all

costs because they are extremely afraid of gaining weight.

Anorexia Nervosa•Anorexia nervosa is a eating disorder that is an INTENSE fear of gaining weight.

•What happens is that you will eat very little food, and you will fast, or starve yourself.•You hallucinate that even if you are bone – thin, whenever you look in the mirror, you seem to yourself that you have gained a few pounds.•If you have anorexia

nervosa, you will experience the following symptoms:

• The BMI is less than 17.5, or less than the weight of a child.

• You will have tooth decay.• Growth of laguno hair.• Very dry skin, and

chapped lips.• Lots of memory loss.• Hallucinations• And, finally, mood swings.• And much, much, more…

Hint: Not to be mistaken for anorexia, which is the loss of appetite for anything.

Anorexia (nervosa) Facts•There is a different type of anorexia nervosa, but it is categorized and misdiagnosed as plain old anorexia nervosa. It is called Orthorexia nervosa, which is when one will only eat health foods, like in the picture. It was discovered in 1997 by Steve Bratman.•95% of people diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are women. Only 5% are men. But, this is on the rise because our society promotes skinniness.•Many anorexic people die from their disorder. But, anorexics also get depressed about their “body” and kill themselves.•Other things used to lose weight are enemas, laxatives, and purging.

Binge Eating DisorderA disorder in which one overeats and then does nothing to lose the weight gained by

binging.

Binge Eating Disorder•Binge eating disorder is the disorder in which you eat WAY too much food.•This is what happens when you have a binge:

•You lose control of food over a certain period of time.•You eat when you are depressed, even when you don’t have anything to do!•Eat until you feel uncomfortable, or even throwing up!•You eat alone because you don’t want anyone to find out that you have binge.•Feeling disgusted, depressed, or guilty after binging.

Binge Eating Disorder•This is what can emotionally happen to bingers:

•You are very secretive of what you eat and when you eat.•Feel guilty after binging.•Getting angry at yourself for binging, and maybe loathing yourself, too.

•There are social effects, too:•You avoid people, because you might binge often.•You probably are afraid of being teased, if excessively overweight.•The fact about being secretive of eating habits affects you socially AND emotionally.

•These are physical effects of binge:

•Possible heavy weight gain•High cholesterol•High blood pressure•Diabetes•Some forms of cancer•Higher chance of heart attack and stroke.

Treatment•Although it may seem hopeless that you have binge eating disorder, there are numerous ways to avoid binging. Here are some tips:

•Keep yourself occupied. Listen to music, read a book, or play outside whenever you are bored and eating seems like a good idea.•Get a therapist for your depression – it will help you accept your body, and boost self- esteem.•Above all, if you’ve gained extra pounds, try to shed it off by going to the gym, walking home from work or school, or taking martial arts.•Tip: Avoid fad diets at all costs. Even if you lose some weight, you will eventually go to your old diet and gain those pounds again until the new one gets into effect.

Extra Stuff about Binge Eating Disorder•Binge eating disorder seems like bulimia, but a binger does nothing to lose any weight.•Binge eating disorder is becoming more and more common in children because fast food restaurants are on the rise and the streets “are becoming unsafe” as the parents say, so less exercise for the kids.•About 1/3 of all binge eating disorder accounts are men.•Obesity is the second most leading cause of deaths under the legal adult age, smoking is first.

Bulimia NervosaA eating disorder in which one binges, eating

up to 10,000 calories, then they go to the bathroom and then purges.

Bulimia•Bulimia is a disorder in which one eats a lot, then purges it, uses enemas, ipecac syrup, which is a drug used to induce vomiting, or laxatives.•Purging is another way of forcing yourself to throw up, or force the large amounts of food out of your body quickly.•What happens during a bulimia episode is:

•One binges for a period of time.•Then, one goes to the bathroom to purge, or throw up.•Other ways of losing weight are: over exercise, enemas, and laxative abuse.

What Happens to Bulimics? Gastric reflux is common, which is a condition in which people throw up, but it’s

uncontrollable. Dehydration and hypokalimia, a disease in which there is low potassium amount in

the blood, may also be present. There would be a lack of electrolytes in the blood, causing cardiac arrest, cardiac

arrhythmia, and can also kill you. Your esophagus, the place that transports food to the stomach, will have

inflammation. The lining of your mouth and throat will have lacerations, or cuts. The enamel (that really hard surface on your teeth) will start to erode, and the

enamel is the main defense for teeth. You may be constipated. The glands under the jaw will be inflamed. Peptic ulcers, or ulcers in the intestines, may be present. For sure, because of oral trauma, you will have calluses on your hands.

These are some of the risks bulimics are taking if they start purging.

(only 6 - 8% of bulimics don’t purge. They over exercise.)

Where to get Help and how to StopThese are some tips that can help you get

over bulimia nervosa throughout your life. Get help. It could be anyone, from a doctor to a family member. Avoid pills at all costs. Even if you don’t have any, one can get

access to a puking poison called ipecac syrup. Avoid that, too. Also, avoid fad diets. These just make you gain the weight back

once the diet is over. Get a psychotherapist. They will help with your low self

esteem, and the following: Get your eating habits back to normal. Keep yourself from purging, and avoid situations that make you want to

binge and purge. The best time to stop bulimia is when a bulimic gives up on diets.

Interesting Facts about Bulimia•Did you know that 6 to 8% of adolescent girls in America have a eating disorder?•Ipecac is a over the counter drug, so people with bulimia can get access to it easily.•80% of all people diagnosed with a eating disorder had it before the age of 20.•Caucasian people are the most likely to get bulimia or anorexia at least once in their life.•Now, girls are starting to fear that they need to lose weight between the ages of nine and eleven.
