Lake & Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegartjoined representatives from InteriorHealth, the Thompson Regional Hospitaldistrict, and the NV Health Care Endow-ment Foundation to announce the launchof Merritt’s new ER construction project,after 2 years of study.
The modern, updated emergency de-partment will be increased from the cur-rent 1000 sq. ft. to over 5300 sq. ft. Thiswill be the most significant upgrade tothe hospital since its construction in 1964.It will include a covered ambulance baywith dedicated ambulance entrance; con-fidential triage & registration spaces; ex-panded trauma & treatment areas, withemphasis on increased privacy and betterinfection control measures; a new nursestation, medication room, washrooms &equipment storage. It will have lots ofnatural light, but stay close to medicalimaging, the lab, and inpatient unit.
The expansion cost — approx. $5.6million — will be shared by the Provincethrough IH, the TRHd, and theNVHCEF. Completion of the project willtake approx. 20-24 months.

passing of Arthur Roy Shumard onNovember 3, 2016 at the age of 76.
Art was predeceased by his parentsRoy and Muriel, sister Elizabeth (Betty),and beloved son Roy. Art will be missedby his wife Carleen Shumard of 42 years,daughter Kareena Costello, grandchil-dren Tyler and dani Costello, his brotherKen Shumard (Kathy) and numerousnieces and nephews and friends.
Art was born in Midway BC andspent his youth in Merritt. He beganworking at Nicola Valley Sawmill(Tolko) when he was 20ish and retired asa grader operator after 41 years of dedi-cated service. Art loved his job and lovedto reminisce about his grading stories.
Art’s Grader Operator CB Handle was“The Shu” and he also became knownaround town as “Mr. Shu”. His & Car-leen’s speciality license plates said it all,“Big Shu”, “The Shu” and “Lil Shu”.
Art enjoyed travelling in the mo-torhome, camping and fishing espe-cially at Tunkwa Lake, watching thenews and keeping up to date on cur-rent events, watching his football andspending time with his son Roy.
As per Art’s wishes there will be noservice. Instead a drop-in tea will beheld at the Shumard Residence at 1609Pine St., on Nov. 12, 11am-3pm.
Special thanks to the incredible staffat Gillis House and the Merritt Hospi-tal in their care for Art.
