Backyard dwellers are tired of their condi-tions, and want proper housing. This was the consensus reached at ameet-
ing that was held by the Bishop Lavis Out-reach Forum in the area last week.Chairperson of the forum, Michael
Hoffmeester, said that it was a very heatedmeeting because these people who had beenliving in backyards were now tired of theircircumstances, especially after the heavyrains in recent weeks.“These people are really fed-up with their
conditions and being on housing ‘lists’ formany years,” he said.
“At times itwasverydifficult keeping con-trol of their concerns and to keep them fo-cused on finding answers to their prob-lems.”Some 90 % of the people at the meeting
have been on the housing list for 15 to 30years and still waiting for a house.
WaitingGilmore Albertine, who lives in a wendy
house, is one of the residents who has beenon the waiting list for 25 years.“The building of the 760 houses by the city
in Valhalla Park was supposed to start earli-er this year, instead they build a recreationpark,” he said.“This project has brought huge problems
for the police because cars are being stonedas they drive past it, and groups of young-sters are chasing youngsters from other are-as off the park, and it’s not even completedyet.”Another disgruntled backyard dweller,
Roseline Groenewald said that the commu-nity still wants to know the final list of whowill benefit from the proposed housingproject in this area.Hoffmeester pointed out that one of the
main concerns that arose in themeetingwasenquiries about a “black book” which wasused by Communicare (Citizen HousingLeague), that used to manage housing in thearea.Rachel Plaatjies, a single parent with
three children, one of them disabled, wasone of the complainants.“My name was written in this black book
in 1984, but when I checked with the citycouncil, my name did not appear on theirhousing database.”
DeniedHoffmeester has confirmed that he ap-
proached the housing manager in BishopLavis, OmarPaulse, whodidnot knowaboutthis alleged book.“He told me that Communicare assured
him that they handed all records, files anddocuments to the City of Cape Town, whenthey stoppedmanaginghousing in thearea.”

There were also complaints that the hous-ing office in the area issued them with redreference cards as proof that they appliedfor a house in the late 1990s, but when theywent to enquire with their red card at theoffice in 2000 they were told that the redcards are invalid. This meant that they had to reapply and
were issued with a white card, effectivefrom the date they applied and not back-dat-ed.Hoffmeester also added that there were so
many horror stories from people who didnot want to be named.“These people are living under terrible
conditions and something has to be done,”he said.“There’s a mother who has got 50 family
members staying on her property, all usingonly one toilet.“She has reported it, health officials have
visited her and promised to help, but noth-ing has happened so far.“Many people also complained about the
rents that they had to pay for some of thesebackyard dwellings. Some property ownerscharge them up to R2 000 to live there evenif they have erected their own wendy hous-
es.”The problem also went beyond Bishop
Lavis with families in the informal settle-ment of Freedom Farm expressing the dis-appointment of those still waiting to be relo-cated, especially the elderly ones.“During the recent heavy rains they were
unable to access or stay in their houses,”said Hoffmeester.“Another problem is that this area is be-
ing used as an illegal dumping area along-side Robert Sobukwe and the StellenboschArterial roads.”Hoffmeester added that the forumhasnot-
ed all these complaints and the communitywere planning a peaceful march to Parlia-ment to hand over a memorandum of griev-ances.“We will be doing this on Tuesday 8 Octo-
ber, and we are inviting the community tomeet at Shoprite in Bishop Lavis at 09:00 be-fore boarding a train to Cape Town.”The next meeting will be on Thursday 10
October in the Bishop Lavis Civic Centrefrom18:00 untilwhere theNationalHousingMinister will be present.V For more information call Hoffmeester on 079 7956121.

TheEquilibriumorganisation inElsiesRiv-er is adding to their empowerment in thecommunity with the launch of an aftercareprogramme.Based at The Range High School they
have already been hard at work with youthin the area but they are now expandingwiththis project to help recovering substanceabusers keep clean. This project was launched at the Elsies
River Library and is the brainchild of third-year social worker students from Universi-ty of Western Cape (UWC).Welcoming the community at the launch
Malinda Onverwacht, one of the UWC stu-dents, said that this aftercare programmewas important for the community becausesubstance abuse was a major problem in allcommunities.“The drug and substance abuse play a big
part in the criminal activities in the com-munity,” she said.“While there are many of these victims
who go to rehabilitation centres the prob-lem is when they get back to the same com-munity.“They comeback to theirneighbourhoods
where the drugs that caused them problemsare still around them, so this programme isimportant to keep them clean.”Yolanda Groep, Equilibrium director and
senior socialworkeralsopointedout the im-portance of the initiative.“There are so many former users who
come from rehab but just fall into the sametraps,” she said.“We have realised that they need our sup-
port in services that we want to offer themin this project.“They must realise that this process will
be an important part of their healing andwewant to help them with those resources tokeep them away from the substances thatthreatened to destroy them.”At the launch various speakers voiced
their support for this initiative and formerdrug users testified to the help that an after-care programme can provide.Kobus Pienaar, a well-known worker in
this field from the Ramot Treatment Centrefor Addictions, emphasised the importanceof aftercare.“Aftercare programmes like this are im-
portant in any community ifwewant tohelppeople overcome their addictions.“In a group like this we must be there to
give them the skills to beat their addictions, they must find something more excitingthan their drugs or alcohol to keep themwanting to be a positive force in their com-munities.”Former addict and communityworker, Ricardo Speelman, also gave a pow-erful presentation about his recovery andthe need for people to take their “second
chances” when it came their way.EmilePoggenpoel, another activist in this field, al-so spoke strongly about getting the familyinvolved in this recovery.“Part of any aftercare programme must
involve the families,” he said.V The support programme will operate on Wednesdays from 10:00, further information from 021 9317745.

Die beeldmateriaal was meer as goud
With Heritage Day still strong on localminds students at Northlink College Parowgot into discovering more about HumanRights last week. The campus in Connaught Road hosted
the workshop which was presented by Afri-ca Unite.Africa Unite (AU) is a human rights and
youth empowerment organisation thatworks with citizens, refugees and migrantsto prevent conflicts, enhance social cohe-sion and promote socio-economic develop-ment.It was formed in 2001 in response to vio-

and student, said that representatives fromAfrica Unite included the director, ZoeNkongolo, facilitator, Brilliant, and variousyouth delegates.“They gave us an exciting interactive pro-
grammegeared at creating awareness of theimportance of Human Rights,” he said.“These included the different levels of
rights, and the differences between certainHuman Rights.“At this workshop the most important
discussion was about the rights of migrant, and how we, as South Africans, should re-spect these rights.”Oliphant added that students found the
workshop informative and asked manyquestions relating to rights. The City of Cape Town, Department of
Water and Sanitation was present and host-ed an awareness campaign in connectionwith water usage, saving tips, and the im-portance of preserving this very vital re-source.

The Science Club at Elsies Riverwere taken on a journey to thestars recently when they hosteda visit from the South AfricanAstronomical Observatory.
Learners in the club and visi-tors were treated to an interest-ing evening as staff from the fa-cility treated them to a presenta-tion of some of the majorastronomical discoveries in re-cent years.
This visit was extra specialfor learner Elzhaan Smith whohas her eyes set on becoming anastronomer to further explorethe universe.
Universe“I have always had this inter-
est in the stars and our place inthe universe,” she said excited-ly.
“That was my main motiva-tion for joining the school’s Sci-ence Club, because I saw it asthe first part of my dream andI wanted to be in the companyof other learners who want to beyoung scientists.”
One of the highlights for thislearner is that she got the oppor-tunity to visit Sutherland earli-er in the year.
“One of our teachers told usabout a competition, the Astro-Essay contest organised by theobservatory,” she adds.
“I just saw ‘astro’ and I was
hooked, and I ended up beingthe only one from our schoolthat was interested.
“That did not bother me andI was required to write an in-spiring essay of about 800 wordsfrom a variety of topics.
“My motivation was that thetop five got to visit Sutherland, and it was all the inspirationthat I needed,” she said.
SatisfiedShe also added that if you
were part of the top five you hadto present your essay to an audi-ence at the observatory.
“I was very happy when Ilearned that I was in that topfive and eventually ended sec-ond after my presentation, butthat really did not matter be-cause I could start packing forSutherland.
“This visit to that area wherestargazing can be done at itsbest was another motivation forme.
“The trip gave me answers toany doubts that I had aboutwhat I wanted to do in life. Ihave this urge to know more, the need to know how every-thing started, how it will end,but more importantly the needto understand God.”
At the end of the presentationat the school the learners alsogot some hands-on experiencewith some stargazing throughtelescopes provided by the ob-servatory.

Kuils River Hospital recently becameAfrica’s first and only accredited ad-vanced heart care facility.
This accolade was bestowed on the hospi-tal by the international Adult CongenitalHeart Association (ACHA).
Thehospital’s secret heartweapon?WhenDr Lou Hofmeyr, an adult congenital andstructural heart disease cardiologist fromMilnerton, joined the hospital’s state-of-theart cardiac unit, the SA Endovascular Prac-tice.
“This afforded the NKRH the accredita-tion,” said Karen Eagle, the hospital’sspokeswoman.
AdvancedThe distinction between any other hospi-
tal’s cardiac unit and the one now function-al in Kuils River, is that fact that they offeradvanced cardiology.
And it was Hofmeyr’s completion of an 18month fellowship in 2012 thatmeant thehos-pitalmet all the criteria to obtain theaccred-itation which made it the only one on thecontinent to be honoured thus.
“NKRH is the only facility in Africa to of-fer advanced cardiology recommended bythe ACHA,” Hofmeyr said.
He explained that a number of require-ments had to be met to become Africa’s lead-er in ACHD. These included having an ex-tended medical staff including surgeons, in-tensive care specialists, imaging andanaesthetic backup, as well as nursing staff, high care and ICU facilities, and lastly anACHD and structural heart and interven-tional cardiologist, such as himself.
“A multi-specialised group of practition-ers allowing the practice to perform com-prehensive medical and interventional car-diological services,” he said.
LeadersHofmeyr was clear about what his team
wished to achieve.“In time, we aim to become the leading
cardiac facility in the country, withpatientstravelling from far to be treated by this teamof medical experts,” he said.
Ever heard of a baby born with a “hole inthe heart”? This is what Hofmeyr’s job is allabout. He explains.
“Congenital heart disease is a type ofbirth defect in one or more structures of theheart or blood vessels that occur before
birth.“The most common congenital heart dis-
orders affecting adults include abnormali-ties of the valves and vessels of the heartwall that develop with wear and tear on theheart, or through other disease processes,”he said.
Impressive“The most common type of congenital
heart disease include abnormal connec-tions between the right and left sides of theheart, such as holes in the walls or obstruc-tions in the normal pathways exiting theheart.”
Because of its super heart team, the hospi-tal boasts an impressive number of cardiactreatments. These include coronary arterydisease, adult congenital heart disease, pe-ripheral vascular disease, structural heartdisease and valvular heart disease,Hofmeyr said.
“Advanced cardiology is offered to not on-ly adults but teenagers and young adultswith complex heart disease at NKRH. Edu-cation to people with congenital heart dis-ease is essential and is available in order toprolong and improve quality of life,”Hofmeyr said.
He explained that Coronary Artery Dis-ease is the most common type of heart dis-ease. It is one of the leading causes of deathin South Africa.
“Lifestyle changes lowering your risk tothis include: stop smoking, control diabetes, control blood pressure, be physically active, eat a low-saturated-fat and low-cholesteroldiet.”V Further enquiries can be made to the SA Endovascular practice at 021 900 6090 or to Karen Eagle,Netcare Kuils River Hospital’s Marketing and PublicRelations Officer at 021 900 6000.

Recycling can get you big rewards. This is what the Ren-Lyn Montessori
School in Ravensmead discovered recentlywhen they won a major prize in a competi-tion of the Foschini Kids Superclub.Lwazikazi Gqoli, from themagazine of the
club, said that they ran the competition frommarch this year and it closed in July.“The competition was advertised in the
Kids Superclub magazine and websiteww.superclub.co.za where kids or parentscould enter their school to win the majorprize of R20 000,” she said.“They had to send in pictures of a project
they created out of recyclable materialsalong with a supporting letter explainingwhy theydeserve towinandwhat recyclablematerials were used.“Class mates and in some instances the
whole school got involved.”She added that the winners created items
such as aquaria from cardboard boxes, sea
shells, leaves, plastic paper fish and picturesaswell as door stoppers from cardboard box-es, old doll parts, small stones, bath saltspackaging, pieces ofmaterial, plastic bottlesand toilet roll holders.“I was very impressed with a quote from
their supporting letter,” she said.“They said: “Winning a prize let alone a
first prize will be a tremendous financialbenefit to our school which is registered butnon-subsidised, non-profitable and self sus-taining.“It will also serve as great motivation to
our learners to work hard in whatever theydo enriching them even further to under-stand the true meaning of Ren-Lyn’s schoollogo and motto: Key to Independence.”They also added that at the top of their pri-
ority list, should theywin the prize, includesplanting a lawn for their sandy playgroundand educational field trips which had to beput on hold due to financial restraints.“We would like to congratulate Ren-Lyn’s
Montessori on their beautiful creativework,” concluded Gqoli.
Recycling not only goodfun but profitable too
Lynn WilloughbyReines, brand coordinator for the Kids Superclub, hands over the winner’scheque to Charlyn Fortuin and Melina Carr of RenLyn’s Montessori with 8yearold AdrianBooysen joining in the celebration. PHOTOS: GARY VAN DYK

TRUST: WILL PROVIDE BURSARIES
A gap forrugby talent
The president of WP rugby and of the trustThelo Wakefield.
The Western Province Rugby FootballUnion has unveiled a new initiative toprovide much-needed educational sup-
port to young rugby hopefuls in the prov-ince.
The Western Province Rugby President’sTrust, launched at DHL Newlands on Tues-day 17 September, will provide bursaries, aswell as rugby training and development togifted young players who can’t afford prima-ry, secondary or tertiary schooling.
The brainchild of previous president, To-bie Titus, the trust has now come to life andis set to change the lives of many childrenwho are eager to pursue a career in profes-sional rugby.
Unifying“There is no doubt that sport, and particu-
larly rugby, is a unifying force; one that canbring together the communities across theWestern Cape,” comments Thelo Wakefield, current president of the union and of thetrust.
“However, there are so many talentedyoung players that, while they have a natu-ral aptitude for rugby, are unable to realisetheir full potential since they don’t have ac-cess to funds for schooling. The trust aimsto give an opportunity to these players, giv-ing them a well-rounded approach to theircareer.”
“Being a successful rugby player is aboutmore than just playing rugby,” commentsScarra Ntubeni, DHL Stormers and DHL WPplayer and speaker at the launch.
“It’s about having an educational frame-
work – understanding the business of rugbyand how to build a career once your profes-sional rugby days are over. The trust is a keyintervention, since it allows potential play-ers to acquire this knowledge to be success-ful.”
It is registered as a Section 18A non-profitorganisation, is funded through public dona-tions and will now be on the search for like-minded partners and donors to increase theopportunities for bursaries. These bursariesand development opportunities are open toany young rugby player between the ages ofsix and 21, who feels that he or she showsdemonstrable talent or potential.
