. From page 1.In Belhar, Roderick van Sitters (46) agreed

that the youth who have become gangsterswere influencedby the culture of popularisingthe gang culture.

“All these authorities, the police, and thecouncil, want to work with the gangs to bringabout peace. That is total nonsense, gangshave no place in our areas,” he said.

“I have got no degrees or anything but I cantell you the rot started setting in when theystarted telling us that our heroes should bepeople like Snoop Dogg and all those other so-called rappers that could just talk about kill-

ing each other and disrespecting women.“That trend is still continuing and nobody

recognises the damage that it is doing in ourcommunities.

“In recent years I have discovered thatthere are so many young musical talents fromAmerica and other parts of the world thatcould become positive role models for ourchildren but they are not getting the same rec-ognition as these gangsters that influence ourchildren.

“Our children deserve a chance to achievetheir potential in life, but it won’t be throughgangsterism.”

Partying has purpose for a group basedin Bonteheuwel.

Party with a Purpose Productions wasstarted a few years ago by Chad Abrahamsand it has grown into a powerful force of em-powerment for children across the peninsu-la.

On Saturday they packed out the DelftCommunity Hall where needy learners gath-ered to receive vouchers to buy school uni-forms and stationery.

Chad explained that this was part of theirKit-a-Kid 4 School project, but it all stemmedfrom challenging friends to host a party witha difference.

“A few years ago while enjoying the partyscene in the Cape I wondered if our youthwould still attend if they were asked to dosomething positive.

“I sent out an invitation for a party, butpeople had to bring a toy to gain entrance.Eventually we were overwhelmed whenmore than 300 people pitched up and weknew that we could develop the idea to bene-

fit needy children through the arts,” he said.He added that the Kit-a-Kid project was ini-

tiated in 2004 with the idea of assisting a fewneedy school-going learners to acquire aschool uniform.

“It came to our surprise to see the numberof learners who are in need of such assist-ance, and we have since become a beacon ofhope for many families every year,” he said.

“Thus far this project has been able to as-sist 1 460 learners in primary and highschools in the Western Cape. In 2007, twolearners were adopted by a sponsor that sawto both the educational and nutritionalneeds of the learners for a full year.”

Currently they have a total of 487 learnerson their database who qualify for assistancefrom the campaign.

On Saturday these children were treatedto a party before the vouchers were handedover to them.

The group received R18 000 sponsorshipfor winter uniforms from The CommunityDevelopment Forum and raised additionalfunds in conjunction with Radio Tygerberg.

For more information about the projectcall Chad Abrahams on 082 547 6059.

Regular visitors to the Tygerberg Hospi-tal in Parow are thrilled that the plannedupgrade to the emergency unit has final-ly began.

The project with a cost of R10 million isset for completion in April next year.

Besides this upgrade a complete make-over of the hospital is also planned for 2016.

This mega-project will entail a completeredesign of the hospital. Plans to incorporatea private partner who will finance, design, build and operate the hospital on behalf ofthe department of health for a concession pe-riod of 20 to 30 years is underway.

“At the emergency centre there are cur-rently nursing staff who run a separatetriage area at the hospital for walk-in pa-tients and the emergency facilities are frag-mented with trauma, surgical, medical, ob-stetric and gynaecological and paediatricemergencies being managed separately,”says Western Cape minister of health, The-uns Botha.

“The new emergency centre will providefor trauma, surgical and medical emergen-cies, but obstetric and gynaecological emer-gencies will remain as separate entities.

“At present no renovations are done at Ty-gerberg Hospital itself, but in the meantime, the R10 million renovation work of the emer-gency centre continues.”

The construction work for the emergencyunit includes:

. A new reception area;

. Psychiatric observation rooms;

. A new trauma wing with a new nurse’sstation and paediatrics, and

. Floors and ceilings will be replaced andtoilets upgraded.

Botha says: “Tygerberg Hospital was builtwith an apartheid design and the conditionof the facility is poor resulting in a severely

compromised service environment.”In view of the mega-project, Western Cape

government health is not investing capitalin the current hospital.

“We realise that the current hospital is de-teriorating, but ask that patients bear withthe situation. It makes no sense to spend ourhealth rands on a building that will not func-tion as a hospital four years from now.”

Sherice Dreyer, who is often at the hospi-

tal, says the initiative is welcomed.“An upgrade is needed and the mainte-

nance of the upgrade should also be taken in-to consideration. The upgrade is good newsand will uplift the spirits of the patientswhich goes a long way when healing.”

Charles Fredericks agrees: “Work to thehospital is long overdue. It’s even more de-pressing to be admitted to a hospital whenthe conditions are bad.”

Keeping the community green can also makeyou money.

That is the powerful message that participantsat a recent workshop on recycling were taught atthe Counselling and Social Development Centre inBishop Lavis.

Representatives from various organisations inthe community and surrounding areas were invi-ted to the workshop that was hosted by Rodrick Re-sandt, regional manager of Collect-a-Can, and Ge-rard Schrieff, recycling manager at Consol in Bell-ville.

Schrieff pointed out that the presentation provi-des the community with an awareness regardingthe importance of recycling.

“Firstly, it is the right thing to do in respect ofthe greening of the planet and it’s important for thesustainability of life.

“In disadvantaged communities there are alsoopportunities for people to gain some form of inco-me from selling recyclable material to waste mana-gement businesses.

“We also emphasised that each person must takeresponsibility for his or her own attitude and acti-ons and not wait for the next person to start suchrecycling initiatives.

“I also emphasised getting away from the menta-lity of ‘what’s in it for me’,” he said.

The pair said that they would welcome invitati-ons to host the presentations in other communitieswhere recycling could play a part in empoweringpeople.

Schrieff can be contacted at 021 950 5100, and Re-sandt at 021 534 7010 (during office hours) for fur-ther information.

CARINA ROUX

“Funnily enough, I didn’t know what an on-cologist was. I only ever related cancerwith adults, never actually contemplatedthe fact that children can get cancer.”

About a year ago four-year-old Ashley keptcomplaining about an upset tummy. His stom-ach felt extremely hard, he lost his appetite andoccasionally had a fever, recalls his parents Bi-anca and Johnny Hayes. Their doctor referredthem to a paediatrician who took some X-rays.

He noticed something, but could not confirma diagnosis, so it was off to Louis Leipoldt hos-pital for sonar and a CT scan. “They just cameand said ‘there’s a growth, we’re going to sendthe oncologist to come and speak to you’.” Onlyafter Johnny googled it, it became all too real:oncology equals cancer.

Ashley had a cancerous growth on his rightkidney known as nephroblastoma or Wilms’tumour. Even though the five year survivalrate for Wilms’ is about 90 percent, “you justwished it wasn’t you”, says Bianca. “It felt likethey took my heart out, stamped on it anddidn’t put it back again.”

They had to accept it and be strong for Ashleyand for his twin sister Kelly and older brotherAlex’s sake too.Twoweeks after diagnosisAsh-ley started with chemotherapy as the tumourwas too big to be removed via a nephrectomy(removal of the kidney). It took four weekly ses-sions of chemo to shrink it down from 14 to sev-en centimetres before they could operate.

Unfortunately the biopsy done after removalshowed that there were more high risk cells inhis body. Because it could grow back on otherorgans or spread via the lymph nodes, Ashleyhad to go through six more months of chemo.

Help for mom especially, but also for the restof the family, came in the form of Mandie Eras-mus from Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT).

LFCT, which is one of the beneficiaries forthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! con-cert, was started to support and assist children

diagnosed with cancer and their families, asmany cannot cope with the day to day pres-sures, financially or emotionally.TygerBurgeris the media sponsor of the concert.

“The support has been great. Mandie gave ushope, she phoned three or four times a week, still does. She’s just so upbeat...”

Ashley had his last chemo on 16 March andis due to have his first check-up soon.

ANDRÉ BAKKES

It took the iconic Nelson Mande-la 67 years to change South Afri-ca.

When a grossly unfair regimeeclipsed any glimmer of hope,Madiba persevered.

Then, when he finally achievedhis purpose by ushering in a newbeginning, he did something trulyhistoric – he embraced the enemy.

The embodiment of a nation’s

struggle was transformed from oneof revenge to unexpected concilia-tion.

This sacrifice was eventually rec-ognised by the United Nations in2009 when it declared 18 July asMandela Day.

On this day, people from all overthe world dedicate 67 minutes tofight poverty and promote peace.TygerBurger asked a few readers

what this day means to them andwhether they are willing to sacri-fice 67 minutes of their year to alle-

viate the pain of others. As always, the responses were

varied. In some instances it engen-dered hope and in others it broughtout strong feelings of contempt.

A disturbing and recurringtheme, however, was that few peo-ple actually knew what the day wasall about.

Dalingyebo Magwa says heknows about Mandela Day, but notwhy one should dedicate specifical-ly 67 minutes of one’s time. Christo-pher October doesn’t have a clue,

but after it is explained to him headmits that it is a great idea andthat the world would indeed be abetter place if everyone helps eachother for a change.

An anonymous woman says shehas no idea why it’s Mandela Day.She also doesn’t care too much, be-cause “Mandela is just another per-son like you and me – we all live thesame and die the same”.

Mlamle Swartbooi is planning tospend time with his family, but hehas no idea why the number 67 is

significant. “People must care forothers,” he continues with convic-tion.

Another anonymous womanbrushes off the special day whenshe says: “No! I’m not interested inMandela Day! I’m not interested inthis idea at all.”

Another says: “I’ve got two sonswho Mandela said will have a fu-ture and they can’t find jobs. I thinkMandela did great for himself, butwe are now experiencing just the re-verse.”

What Madiba’s ‘67 mins’ means to you

Dalingyebo Magwa says he will beworking on Mandela Day, but he willbe doing something for the poorestof the poor. “I think it’s a good day.If everyone could do something thenthe world will be a better place. If youcan’t give money or time, then youshould give love to those who needlove.” Photos: André Bakkes

“I intend to pray for 67 minutes,” saidthe effervescent Cheryl Laskey. “I wantto pray for peace in the country and tohelp people understand that we ask Godto bring peace. I will also pray to Godto bring reconciliation amongst people.I pray for our government every year aswell, because we know that God is theway, the truth and the light.”

When Brian Knipe is asked why it’sMandela Day he said: “It’s something to do with the children’s fundI think. I know you’re supposed to dosomething special for somebody else, but I’m not sure why it’s 67 minutes... We’re not going to do something specific for Mandela Day, because every day is Mandela Day.” Headded that if every day was like aMandela Day then the world wouldbe a wonderful place to live in.

GARY VAN DYK

Your help is needed to keep a young boy’smusical dreams alive.

Since joining the Drakensberg Boys ChoirSchool in 2011 Nathan Julius (14), from Bel-har, has been enjoying his educational expe-rience and sees it as part of his dream to be-come a world-famous conductor and com-poser.

While it is a huge achievement to be ac-cepted to the school, there is still a huge costfor the family to keep him there, and that iswhere they need help.

The family was originally from Oakdale inBellville, where Nathan attended the HolyCross Primary School, and his talent for mu-sic was quickly noticed when he joined theschool choir.

At the time the family led a reasonablycomfortable life with mom, Charmaine, working as a matron in Saudi Arabia, butall that changed when an accident left herparalysed.

Today the family has to live with theirgrandmother, Marieta Sanders, who isstruggling as the primary breadwinner inthe family, but she is not prepared to giveup on her grandson’s dream.

“Somehow I know that we will be helped,”she said.

“I remember that my daughter was al-ready paralysed when Nathan got the invita-tion to attend the auditions and I came homefrom work and was not feeling in the moodfor anything else.

“Nathan was all dressed and excited butI tried to persuade him that I just could notmake it, but his mother, eventually con-vinced me that we had to go.

“That was only the start of our worries be-

cause when we got to the school in the Drak-ensberg we realised the financial implica-tions, and we were going to give up. But, werealised that we had to give Nathan thischance because God would not be doing thisfor nothing.

“There had to be a bigger plan,” she said.Mom, Charmaine, also felt that her son

needed this chance in life, because in theshort time that he was there he has becomea new person.

“He used to be shy and introverted butwhen he came home for the first time we re-alised he was so positive about his talent.

For more information about how you canhelp, call Marieta Sanders on 076 080 4554.

Ravensmead Athletics Club isgetting children to sprint ahead.

Their Kids Development teamperformed very well when they re-cently took part in the WesternProvince Athletics Mini-Olympicshosted at Vygieskraal Stadium inAthlone.

The team obtained the overall sil-ver medal for their performances atthe games that served as the pinna-cle of a week-long holiday camp for150 children.

While school holidays can seemto be never-ending to many parentsand boring for the children, the hol-iday camp provided an excitingweek of activities, including a visitto the aquarium.

The Mini-Olympics provided afun-filled competitive day of racing, jumping and throwing events, which inspired and excited.

Chairman of the club, AbramMadiehe, was excited about theachievements of these youngstersfrom the club.

“We are very proud of their hardwork and dedication to the sport,”he said.

“There are also big thanks totheir trainer and facilitatorFundiswa Sandi as well as the par-ents who volunteer to assist withthe children’s training.

“I am confident that we are goingto get some champions from thisgroup especially because this groupwasonly started sixmonths ago.Wewould like to invite and encourageother youngsters who are interest-ed in athletics to join up with us.”

For further information aboutthe activities Madiehe can be con-tacted on 082 323 5828, and Sandi on073 526 1120. Adults are also wel-come to join.

Riverside Rangers still lead the North-ern Football Association Super Leaguetable with 11 points ahead of other titlehopefuls with 12 games to go.

Captain Moses Ficks insists that the teamof Avonwood have to make use of theirchances if they hope to win the league thisseason.

The defending champions face BellvilleUnited in a league match at Bellville Southon Sunday.

Following their lost to Eastern Rovers onSaturday Ficks says the blame should notonly be shouldered by the strikers.

“As a team we have to make use of ourchances and not only blame the strikerswhen there are no goals,” he said. “With thesystem we play, every player has the oppor-tunity to score goals for the team.

“We have also noticed that teams have re-sorted to parking the defensive bus at theback whenever they come up against us, butwe have to be innovative and find othermeans of penetrating them and finding thegoals.”

The Coke Cup is still in the mix this sea-son, which makes the schedule a bit tighterbut Ficks refuses to use that as an excuse.

“Our team has a huge squad of talentedplayers, who are equally capable of deliver-ing the goods. The way the coach has beenrotating players between the league and cupshould alleviate any possibilities of fatigue.

“Apart from keeping the players fresh, therotation of players keeps everyone on theirtoes and helps the coach see other playersin his squad. We have a lot of talent in theteam, every position has an equally capablereplacement should anything happen to anyplayer.”

On the possibility of adding two trophiesto their collection by winning both theleague and Knock-Out competition, Fickssays things are looking positive but addsthat they will not count their chickens be-fore they have hatched.

“We’ll take each game as it comes,” hesays.

As a player he is happy with his contribu-tion to the team in the new role afforded tohim by coach Mondo, but adds that he cannever be too comfortable because there isstill a lot of room for improvement.

Eastern Rovers will face Kalksteenfonteinat Salberau Park this weekend.
