field handles business and law, and this iswhat I love to do,” she says.Mottie started her studies in LLB Law in

1998, but had to give it up because of herresponsibilities as a faculty officer at UWC,and as a mother of two at home. Before she started to work and study, she

the common man on the street with thingspertaining to law; this is my passion andwhat I want to do with my life,” she says.Mottie explains that her husband, Brad-

role models for our children, and that withour guidance they can achieve greatthings.”She believes that the only way to achieve

what you want is by working hard and per-severing through the tough times that areoften part of the process of getting yourqualification.“Working at UWC made me realise that

anything is possible, and that it is never toolate to improve.“And, it won’t stop here, I plan to do my

articles for B.Com Law, then complete myHonours as well as get experience in thefield,” she says.

Delft is making its mark against drug densto take back their streets.

The battle has begun to take back thestreets after recent outbreaks of shootingsin the community.

Last Thursday in Delft the communityshowed their support for this initiativewhen they joined police in a march throughthe streets of Roosendal.

They also visited the homes of two of theinnocent victims of last week’s shootingsand handed flowers to their mothers.

Police also started a campaign of mark-ing suspected drug dens in the area byspraypainting red crosses on these houses.

Later that day the police also arrestedthree gang members for illegal possessionof ammunition on a search warrant inDelft.

This follows after a vigorous campaign

which took place under the auspices of Op-eration Combat, to mobilise communitysupport against gangsterism and its crimi-nal activities.

Captain Joe Wilson, communication of-ficer at Delft SAPS, pointed out that the ini-tiative yielded significant results.

“The community demonstrated their en-thusiasm and support by providing valua-ble information in terms of addresses intheir neighbourhoods which led to the un-precedented success the police have madein recent weeks,” he said.

As a result of the information providedby the community, the police acted swiftlywith the focus of the search on drugs, fire-arms and ammunition.

Armed with a search warrant, the policesearched a suspected house in Pokkiesdor-ing, Roosendal, where they recovered vari-ous guns and ammunition in a shallow holein the backyard.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investi-gation by members of Operation Combat, under the leadership of Major General Jere-my Veary.

This operation is a strategy that is aimedat fighting gang violence and to dislodgeand terminally weaken the capacity of thegangs to operate within the communities inthe Western Cape.

Police arrested a 48-year-old mother, her22-year-old son and a 20-year-old male sus-pect who were found at the premises in pos-session of two sachets of tik.

The acting Provincial Commissioner,Major General Sharon Jephta commendedthe excellent works of Operation Combat.

“These actions are a manifestation of thefulfilment of the objectives of our gangstrategy,” she said.

“The police will not rest until a “hardblow” has been dealt on the criminal ele-ments within our province.”

NEW COACH: ‘IT’S ALL ABOUT PRESSURE’

Santos itch for derby

GET IT! Witbank Spurs goalkeeper Brice Msiza dives for the ball ahead of Santos FC striker Edwin Sitayitayi during a National First Division matchat Athlone Stadium on Saturday 4 May. Sitayitayi scored twice to seal a 20 win and will need to be in top form against Milano United on Sunday.

LIAM MOSES

Santos coach Ian Palmer has confirmed hisside are “psyched up” for their Cape derbyrematchagainstMilanoUnitedonSaturday. The People’s Team were on the receiving

end of a 3-0 drubbing in the first round fix-ture at Athlone Stadium in November. The heavy loss was one of many defeats

suffered by Santos in first half of the season, but the Lansdowne side has improved vastlysince Palmer took over fromMartNooij dur-ing the mid-season break.Palmer says the match will be the more

important of his team’s two remaining fix-tures in the regular National First Division(NFD) season.“Theydidn’t discuss the last gamewithme

in detail, but – as a player – that will alwaysbe in your mind and they will also want re-venge,” he says.“But I told them that Milano have made

changes to their squad in the transfer win-dow, so they will most likely not be playingthe same players as last time.“These games are all about pressure. All

I want them to do is go out there, enjoy thegame and not put pressure on themselves, because if you work in a pressured environ-ment you are bound to make mistakes.”Santos have been in fine form ahead of the

derby, claiming four wins and suffering oneloss in their last five games – including a 2-1win over Sivutsa Stars in Mpumalanga onWednesday.Milano’s recent results make for far less

impressive reading, with threewins and twodraws, in their last five fixtures. However, it could be argued that the

Grassy Park side have had a more difficulthome stretch, with one of their draws com-ing from anApril encounter against currentleague leaders Mpumalanga Black Aces(0-0).Palmer is under no illusions about how

tough the Cape Derby and the final gameagainst JomoCosmos onSunday 19Maywillbe, but he has still set his players the targetof victories and clean sheets in both games.“I told the players to focus on top spot and

if it’s meant to be it will be. We just want towin our games and themost important gameis (right) now against Milano,” says Palmer.

“Theyarenot aneasy teamtoplayagainst. It’s a derby and I think it’s going to be a veryphysical game. The players know that sixpoints (in the last two games) will help themachieve the last target. They know that it’simportant not to concede any goals, because

things may just come down to goal differ-ence and that will help as well.”Palmer is confident his troops will hold

their heads in the final two games and notbuckle under the pressure.“We are fortunate to have senior players

who are good leaders.“The younger ones look up to them. They

can see the bigger picture and what is aheadof them. They are already looking forwardto playing PSL football – that’s what they tellme.”

SAREL BURGER

loslootjies gehad.Die komende naweek se program (tuis-

span eerste) is:Tygerberg t Maties, Belhar t Durbanville-

Bellville, Bellville t Helderberg, Villager tBrackenfell, NNK t Goodwood, Hamlets tUWK, Kuilsrivier t Primrose.
