InSeptember2013,KarlBremerHospital

will, for the first time ever, boast an

emergency centre.

Once in operation the hospital will be able

to treat trauma patients from the northern

and Tygerberg subdistricts, excluding Delft.

Over R70 million R53 million on the con-

struction and an estimated R20 million on

equipment will be spent on the new centre

at the hospital.

A R3 million CAT scanner forms part of

the equipment to be installed.

The new centre will broaden the scope of

healthcare services to all district level pa-

tients from the northern and Tygerberg sub-

districts, Western Cape Health Minister

Theuns Botha said at a media briefing at the

hospital last week.

Dr Lawrence Bitalo (director: primary

healthcare) said the emergency centre ismo-

tivated by the need of people from the north-

ern suburbs.

He said where people staying in the vicini-

ty had to go to TygerbergHospital in the past

for the treatment of injuries suchas abroken

leg, they could now visit Karl Bremer hospi-

tal.

During the construction process, the other

services at the hospital will carry on undis-

turbed.

Dr Linda Naude, the hospitals CEO, said

Karl Bremer Hospital is classified as a dis-

trict level hospital and should offer a full dis-

trict hospital package of care to the northern

and Tygerberg subdistricts, excluding Delft.

When this hospital opened its doors in 1956

it was used as an academic hospital for the

University of Stellenbosch.

When Tygerberg Hospital was founded 20

years later, Karl Bremer became a hospital

for the admission of private patients.

In 1996 this hospital opened as a secondary

hospital for government patients and in 2009

it was classified as a district hospital, but

without emergency services.

This will change with the completion of

the emergency centre next year.

At the moment, the closest medical emer-

gency unit for Bellville residents is Tyger-

berg Hospital.

Commuters can travel a bit safer now

that palisade fencing has been set up at

the Parow train station.

The aim of the palisade fencing is to allevi-

ate crime in the area as well as to beautify

it.

The upgrade of the Parow train station

must be seen as part of urban regeneration

throughout the area, says Clive Justus,

chairperson of the local subcouncil.

The station is the ultimate entry for visi-

tors to Parow CBDwhere they do their shop-

ping or work. Local residents make use of

Parow station when utilising public trans-

port to commute to various parts of Cape

Town. This high footfall precinct needs to be

neat and tidy as well as safe.

The palisade fencing came about after Jus-

tus had talks with Metrorail management

about the condition of the station.

Initially the refuse that had been dumped

in the unused pedestrian subway was re-

moved, but rain also accumulated in the

walled-in section. This wall was demolished

to allow thewater to run away and eliminate

a place where vagrants were sheltering.

Metrorail management took action to better

manage commuter movement and secure

their property by installing fencing.

All the councillors welcome this positive

development and wish to highlight further

essential actions still to be done.

. Painting of the building and repairs to

vandalised property;

. Better management of the parking area

for taxis;

. Repairs to disused buildings, and

. Removal of caravans currently used for

trading and accommodation.

Justus says early discussions are also tak-

ing place regarding the redevelopment of the

whole station precinct to take advantage of

the underutilised space both adjacent to the

main buildings and the airspace above the

railway lines.

The space could provide economic oppor-

tunities, as well as housing, while playing a

significant role in bridging the separation

between Parow and Parow Valley communi-

ties, he says.

A safe and clean environment is para-

mount to attracting clients and customers

and I call on all property owners, residents

and transients to play their responsible part

in ensuring the change needed to move from

urban decay to urban renewal.

The presence of the security officers em-

ployed by the Voortrekker Road City im-

provement district (VRCID) has received

positive response frombothbusiness owners

and residents alike.

The Parow West neighbourhood watch as

well as Parowpolice have also acknowledged

the positive contributions these officers are

having in mitigating crime and vandalism.

men who witnessed the regional fi-

nals of the Miss South Africa at

GrandWest Casino on Saturday.

The final was not open to the pu-

blic, but there was nonetheless a

small audience.

The organisers received many

thousands of entries for the event

which will be held at the end of this

year.

After an initial process of elimi-

nation based on entry forms, the

girls come together in all the pro-

vinces and take part in a more in-

depth judging process.

Contestants were dressed up in

their most elegant evening wear

and then the numberwas narrowed

down from 34 to just 14.

This is the very stage where Ty-

gerBurger was invited on Saturday

to talk to some of the girls from the

northern suburbs of which there

were four. StaceyWebb andDanelle

deWet are fromKuilsRiver,Tarryn

Kim Cornelius from Parow and To-

ni Smidt from Kraaifontein.

It was a good thing that I had a

voice recorder, because it was vir-

tually impossible to listen to the

songs of angels.

There were one or two moments when a

contestant answered the question only to be

greeted by a gawking silence.

I must confess to using the um-and-ah

kickstart a couple of times just to reset my

mind.

All four woke up early on Saturday mor-

ning to get ready for the big day. They ap-

plied their makeup, got dressed and then did

the other mysterious things which take

hours and men simply cannot fathom.

Says Webb: Ive done it in 2010 and made

it to theTop 33, so I amquite comfortable and

confident!

De Wet says she also competed in Miss SA

last year and made the Top 30.

students from University of the Western

Cape (UWC) protested against Hillary

Clintons visit last Wednesday.

The US Secretary of State spoke at the

university and complimented South Afri-

ca, rating it in standards that America

meets.

Her uplifting words were however not

taken to heart by all, as students under

the banner of Azapo Western Cape pro-

tested outside calling her a killer.

We want the public to be aware shes

not welcome in South Africa, said Tho-

bela Tshali, one of the protesting stu-

dents.

The students stressed they did notwant

SouthAfrica tobe sucked into Americas

web.

Although unrest erupted outside there

were a few who had some light relief to

add to the occasion.

It brings recognition to the university

and will hopefully open up opportunities

for us to go overseas, said UWC student

Mzwandile Shabangu.

Another student, Ilse Morgan, ex-

pressed amazement saying: She inspires

us as females, because shes a woman in

power.

Although her arrival sparked the out-

come of different attitudes, many stu-

dents felt the strike unnecessary and be-

lieve shes here for a greater cause.

tary of State, last week described UWC

as an institution that contributed im-

mensely to the birth of a democratic

South Africa. She encouraged students

to remember this legacy when they

faced inevitable challenges in the fu-

ture.

Clinton visited the University of the

Western Cape (UWC)Wednesday 8 August,

where she made a public speech on the US-

South African Partnership.

She said South Africa had many of the

values the world were looking for. Only

South Africans can defend their democrat-

ic institution. Only South Africans can ex-

tend the legacy of theMandela generation.

your future, she told students. You will

decide whether South Africa moves for-

ward or backwards.

Clintons visit was aimed at advancing

and deepening the US-South African rela-

tionship.

Clinton said she first came to South Afri-

ca in 1994 for the inauguration of Nelson

Mandela.

We are now 18 years removed from that

iconic moment ... You didnt just grow up

Suspects found to be in illegal

possession of ammunition and

firearms were arrested in

Wesbank by the Mfuleni police

last week.

Capt Nomathemba Muavha,

communications officer for the

Mfuleni police says the police

acted on information supplied

and went to search a house in

Cadotte Street, Wesbank last

week.

Muavha said: The female

owner of the house let the police

in and they found one suspect

sleeping on the coach with three

rounds of live ammunition.

In the bedroom police found

the second suspect with an ille-

gal firearm (.38 special) with a

serial number, loaded with five

live rounds of ammunition un-

derneath his pillow and the

third suspect was found on the

other bed with a small coffee

containerwith ten live rounds of

.38 special ammunition.

Police tracked the owner of

the .38 special revolver to Mon-

tague, but established that no re-

ported case of stolen or lost fire-

arm had been opened.

The three suspects aged be-

tween 16 years and 23 yearswere

charged with possession of am-

munition and possession of ille-

gal firearms with ammunition.

They appeared at the Blue

Downs Court last week Monday

and remain in custody.

Muavha said: As the police

we want to encourage the com-

munity to come forwardwith in-

formation.

Burnley Womens Soccer

Club is boosting womans soc-

cer in the community.

Based in Bonteheuwel the

club hosted a special Womens

Day programmeat theMetropol-

itan Sports Field last week, with

women and young girls pitching

up to enjoy a fun day of coaching

clinics and other activities.

GaryWilson is themanager of

the club and said that they were

affiliated to the local Metropoli-

tan Football Association and

wanted to promote the sport for

women in the area. We started

in the promotional league last

year and got promoted to the Ab-

sa League for this season, he

says proudly.

There is lots of interest in the

sport among young girls and so

this year we have also started a

development team which plays

in the under-13 boys division.

At present the club has about

40 players with 10 executive

memberswho look after the run-

ning of the club, but we always

welcome new members into the

club.

Wilson added that most of the

members are still at school so

theyarealways looking for spon-

sorships or donations to help

them with activities in the area.

Its not just about the sport

for the girls, he continued.

Through the sport it gives

them confidence in life skills

that can help them in adulthood.

In the club we teach them how

to respect themselves and oth-

ers.

With our Women in Sport

Day that we hosted to celebrate

Womens Day we invited the

community to come and see how

they could enjoy themselves

through sport, and it looks like

we will be getting some more

members for thenewseason, he

said.

The club is hoping that this

daywill become an annual event

for the community and they

would like to thank the Metro-

politanLadies Football Associa-

tion for their support, Imos Au-

to Clinic for donating T-shirts

for the event, and Metal Buyers

for their donation to the day.

urbs Football Union Super League title

has entered a very critical stage, as Ma-

troosfontein AFC will be looking for

nothing less than a win in the remaining

matches in order tomaintain the top spot

on the log.

Matroosfontein hosts Central AFC this

weekend and will be looking at extending

their stay at the top of the log in a match to

be played at Avonwood Park on Sunday at

14:00.

JohnDaniels, manager ofMatroosfontein,

says a win will allow them some breathing

space at the top, with the three Elsies River

teams breathing down Riverside Rangers

neck.

Trinitarians, Central and South End also

still have an outside chance, so there is still

a lot to play for in the remaining matches.

The Spring TouchRugby Sea-

son gets under way in the

firstweekof September. Play-

ers and teams of all shapes

and sizes are encouraged to

shake off the winter cobwebs

and put away the umbrellas

for what promises to be the

best season ever.

The Villagers League has

produced a couple of Spring-

boks such as Amien Bailey,

and the two brothers Illy and

Coobie Slamang.

The league also produced a

Springbok referee in Clinton

Booysen.

The leagues will run from

the Brackenfell sports

grounds on Monday eve-

nings, Villagers on Wednes-

day evenings andCenturyCi-

ty on Thursday evenings.

from provincial to social will

Die Horskool Stellenberg se eerste netbalspan,

wat voorverlede week n paar opstoppers tydens

die nasionale uitdaagtoernooi in Boksburg ge-

kry het, het hom verlede weekmooi reggeruk en

HS Bellville met 35-23 geklop.

In Boksburg het die Stellies ses van hul nege

wedstryde gewen en negende uit 26 spanne ge-

eindig, terwyl di skool se o.14-span vyf van sy

agtwedstryde gewenhet om indie sesde plek (uit

24 spanne) te eindig.

De Kuilen se o.16-span het geskitter by die

Boksburg-saamtrek deur sy eerste sewe wed-

stryde op n ry te wen, maar is toe in die eind-

stryd naelskraap met 17-15 deur Menlopark ge-

klop.

Die Kuile se o.17-span het vyf van hul agt wed-

stryde gewen om uiteindelik landwyd vyfde ge-
