toesig te hou en enige klagtes in ver-bandmet polisiedienslewering te on-dersoek, met die doelstelling om ter-selfdertydwedersydse respek tussendie polisie en die gemeenskap te be-vorder,” het hy gesê.“Dit sal ons in staat stel om stelsel-

mislukkings binne die polisiedienste identifiseer met die doelwit omvolhoubare oplossings daarvoor tevind.”In teenstellling met die Onafhank-

like Polisie-ondersoekdirektoraat(Opod) wat slegs polisie-optrede metbetrekking tot kriminele elementeondersoek, sal dié ombudsman aan-geleenthede ondersoek wat metdienslewering verband hou.

tlers High in Bellville, was verlede Don-derdagmiddag op pad huis toe ná skooltoe vier mans in ’n silwer kar langs haarstilhou en haar met ’n vuurwapen dreig.Die groep het ook die R100 by haar ge-neem.

Volgens Christélle Ekron, ’n inwonernaby waar die voorval plaasgevind het,is die meisie omstreeks 15:00 in AgsteLaan beroof.

Who knew pets could donateblood? Well, they can, andhave been doing so at a

Bellville animalhospital for at leastfour years.This essential service to animal

hospitals across the province andcountry has been run by Dr AnnieSingh at the Tygerberg AnimalHospital (TAH) in Kenridge since2011.Singh calls the Tygerberg Pet

Blood Donor Clinic her “baby”.“We supply many of the animal

hospitals in the Western Cape withblood, but there is a hospital in Pre-toria which also has a blood bank,”she says.“I guess you could say we share

the burden to supply animal hospi-tals across the country.”Singh says just last week some of

their donor blood was sent off toVredenburg and even Port Eliza-beth, as well as Pretoria.“We have 60 clients [donors],

mainly dogs and about 10 cats. It ismore difficult to get hold of donorcats – I’m not sure that people areaware of this service,” she says.Singh explains the process for donor ani-

mals.“Generally, the client first has to sign on.

We need a dog of over 30 kg, which is notobese. It has to be a standard, healthy largebreed animal between one and eight yearsold.“The reason is simple: We take about

350 ml of blood at a time.With the anti-coag-ulant, a donation is about 450 ml in vol-ume,” she says.The principle is the same as for humans,

who have to be about 55 kg to donate halfa litre, she says.For cats it is a little different.“Cats are normally only about three to

four kilograms in size. We take only 40 ml– 60 ml at most.”She says they don’t keep cats’ blood, it is

used immediately and only in emergencies.“Because we take so little blood, you can-

not store it. There isn’t a bag small enoughto store it in.”So how does the process work and does

the donor animal feel any pain?“We do give them sedation, but this just

cuts off the edge, as it is a general anaesthet-ic. They don’t really feel any pain becauseof the sedation.“The owner comes in the morning and

has to keep them starved for the sedative.

Then we do a blood count,” Singh says.They proceed with a blood smear, a para-

site check and if all is 100% okay, they pro-ceed with the sedation.“The animal goes from table to floor. We

do not have any problems with this. Theyare fed immediately as soon as the proce-dure is completed. Then they are given a de-wormer and can go home,” she says.Their donor pets donate every three

weeks, she says.“In theory they can donate every three

weeks, but we rotate the clients.”“Wehave clients as far asHermanus.This

dog needed emergency medical assistanceand his owner thought a good idea to ‘giveback’ to otherpetswouldbe todonate.Whenwe need blood, we call on donors. We alsohave clients from the southern suburbs, inClaremont and such.“The blood bank has been my baby since

the beginning,” she says.“I’m not sure everyone knows of this ser-

vice, but we did have an open day about amonth ago.“We also have a board up in our facilities

The camp is specifically aimed at teach-erswishing to advance science, technology,engineering and maths (STEM) in theirschools.

A number of teams visited the US Spaceand Rocket Centre (NASA’s official visitorinformation centre for the Marshall SpaceFlight Centre) in Huntsville, Alabama.

Westley Casey from the Space Camp ex-

plained in a statement that the attendeeswere tested on leadership, teamwork anddecision-making and given a number ofmissions.

Some of their experiences included astro-naut simulators and virtual tours intospace to “save” the International Space Sta-tion (ISS), Casey stated.

The groupswere given lesson plans basedon actual NASA content, which will bepassed on to their learners in their class-rooms for practical learning.

Shaun said a company called Honeywellfully sponsored his trip and one of his fa-vourite activities was the simulated para-chute jump into water.

He was part of Team Zarya, which meanssunrise in Russian,Shaun says. Zarya wasthe first module of theISS,” he said.

This module waslaunched into space inNovember 1998.

Casey stated the par-ticipating teams wereeach made up of 15members.

He said the camp op-erates throughout theyear and trainees sleepin quarters designed toresemble the ISS andtrain in simulators likethose used by NASA.

The Pampoenkraal heritage square up-grade project in Durbanville is makinggood progress, according to the City.

The aim of this R10-million upgrade projectis to create a robust, multi-purpose publicsquare that can be transformed from a playf-ulwater park for small children to an exhibi-tion space or concert venue, while also ac-ting as a civic space at the entrance to theDurbanville CBD.The City of Cape Town

identified erf 699 (boundedby Main, Wellington,Voortrekker, and ChurchStreets) in Durbanville and its sur-rounds as an ideal location for thecreation of a dignified public space.The site, which accommodates

the townhall, has a rich history, ha-vingplayed an important role in thedevelopment of Durbanville, origi-nally known as Pampoenkraal.“Through the upgrade of the

Pampoenkraal heritage square, we aim tocreate a quality civic and recreational pre-cinct within the Durbanville CBD to promo-te business as well as encourage communityactivities within this heritage-rich area ofour city,” said mayco member for energy,environmental and spatial planning, Johanvan der Merwe.

“Residents and visitors have much tolook forward to as the project promises touplift and reinvigorate the area,” said Vander Merwe.The first phase of theproject,which focu-

sed only on theVoortrekkerRoad area, hasbeen completed. Construction started inFebruary 2015which entailed replacingpa-ving onboth sides ofVoortrekkerRoad, pa-ving the road surface, installing and repla-

cing services andinstalling treeplanters and irri-gation.“Voortrekker

Road has been in-corporated intothe space to allowbusiness to relatemore directly tothe site. Restau-rants located onthis edge will

eventually be encouraged to utilise the are-as in front of their shops for extra seatingas the road has been semi-pedestrianised,”he said.The second phase will start in the next

few months and will include the completi-on of the main square. This will entail res-urfacing the square, planting trees, imple-

within 12months fromcommencing construc-tion.“As the site contains a rich history, a large

portion of the design was influenced by ele-ments that made up a historic outspan. Theseinclude a spring, water furrow, a feeding anddrinking trough, and evidence of human mo-vement and activity connected to the esta-blishment of early farms. For example, the in-troduction of water as amajor design elementcelebrates the historic fountain located near-by and the presence ofwater as a founding ele-ment of the town.”

The water feature takes the form of shal-low flowing streams with occasional smallfountains, creating a safe place where chil-dren can play.The water feature is fed from the nearby

spring and is clean water that flows into theshallow streams and drains back into theexisting stormwater system.This design also celebrates the town hall,

an important heritage feature, by creatinga forecourtwhere activities such as exhibiti-ons or events can spill out into the exteriorspace. The area in front of the town hall hasbeen re-conceptualised as an amphitheatre.Furthermore, the space will include shel-

tered areas to sit, while steps and ramps al-low easy movement across the site.

There was also ahigh rate of sexual assault in these cases.In fact, over 50 children are raped daily

in our country, according to the 2013/14crime statistics. And these are just thereported cases.These statistics should scare you. They

should leave you feeling disturbed. Theyshould spur you to action, either to leavea dangerous situation or help those whofind themselves in one.Hiding behind your curtains is no

longer an option. Preventing theseatrocities is everyone’s concern.

Three of Durbanville Hills’ wines fromtheir reserve Rhinofields range havewon awards at the 2015 Sommelier Se-

lection wine competition.The 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay took

the trophy in the “full and rich” categorywhilst the 2014 Rhinofields SauvignonBlanc and 2013 Rhinofields Noble Late Har-vest were each shortlisted in the categories“elegant and classy” and “sticky’s” respec-tively.

With just under 400 wines judged blindby two panels consisting of three somme-liers each with one associate, the wines we-re evaluated not by grape varietal but moreby the style and price point.

According to organisers, the aim of thecompetition is to find the best, most dyna-mic wines available on the market, judgedon their food appropriateness.

The competition, a first for the South Af-rican wine industry, is judged solely by apanel of South African sommeliers and incategories, although unusual, which re-flect the design of a wine list for a restau-rant and hotel. These include house wines,fresh crunchy whites, voluptuous rich redsas well as beer, cider and international wi-ne.

Delighted cellar master Martin Mooresaid the reserve range from DurbanvilleHills truly reflects the unique terroir of thearea.

A young man from Fisantek-raal has big dreams – heplans to represent South Af-

rica at the 2016 Olympic Games.Marno Plaatjies, a wrestler af-

filiated to the Olympians SportAcademy (OSA), was recentlyelected to represent South Africaat the Spanish Open Tournamentin July this year, pushing himcloser to achieving his Olympicdream.The 23-year-old, who started

wrestling in 2006, is in training toqualify for the 2016 OlympicGames.“My participation in Spain is

part ofmy preparation to go to theWorld Championship in Las Ve-gas in September, where I hope toqualify for the Olympic Games,”he says.

UpliftmentThe OSA works to uplift chil-

dren from the rural areas of Fisan-tekraal, Klipheuwel, JoostenbergVlakte and Philadelphia throughthe sport of wrestling. Their as-sistance extends to offering trans-port to training facilities, tourna-ments, food and wrestling gear.“Marno is one of our rising

stars. We are extremely proud ofhis achievements and wish himthebest of luck inSpain. Themainpurpose of the OSA is to reach theyouth and teach them that one canfollow a different lifestyle, havedreams and accomplish them,”says OSA secretaryWendy Bosse.“Because of the area that I lived

in, if I did not become involved inwrestling I would most probablyhave fallen into gangsterism andalcohol or drug abuse as these arethe norm for Fisantekraal’s

youth,” says Marno.“Wrestling has taught

me to be motivated anddedicated to what I do andto be able tomake the rightchoices even if I am facedby challenges.“Wrestling has taught

Further training“We have about eight wrestlers

who have stayed with us since2006 and they all come from rural

areas. These wrestlers have beentrained as coaches and we usethem to coach the other childrenin the communities,” said Bosse.“We had three wrestlers who

represented South Africa at theCommonwealth Games in Glas-gow in 2014. One of our girls, Nor-ma Gordon from Klipheuwel wasthe first junior woman to win amedal at the Africa Champion-ships.”Tiny van Schalkwyk, general

Van die land se voorste Afrikaansetaalkenners het Donderdagoggendbyeengekom om die jongste toevoe-

ging tot die bekendste woordeboek in Afri-kaans te vier.

Tydens dié byeenkoms is die Handwoor-deboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (die HAT)se vyftigste bestaansjaar herdenk met dieaankondiging van ’n omvattend herbe-werkte en uitgebreide sesde uitgawe. Diebekendstelling van die nuwe HAT6 is be-hartig deur die samestellers, Jana Luther,Fred Pheiffer en prof. Rufus Gouws van dieUniversiteit Stellenbosch. Die drie redak-teurs het om die beurt nuwe woorde envoorbeelde van hoe Afrikaans oor die afge-lope twee dekades ontwikkel het, uit die nu-we woordeboek aangehaal.

Gouws het die gaste vermaak met ’nsnaakse anekdote oor sogenaamd uiterspraktiese gebruike van die HAT, maar op’n ernstiger noot verwys na dieHAT se plekop die boekrak, “tussen die Bybel en DieBurger”, in elke Afrikaanse huis.

“Die HAT het oor vyf dekades deel vanelke huishouding geword. Die werklikedoel van die HAT is om Afrikaans vas tevang, om vryheid aan Afrikaans te gee,” hetGouws in sy toespraak gesê.

“Dit is nié ’n deurstop nie, maar ’n ma-nier vir mense om die deure van kennis oopte maak.” Die verskil tussen vorige uitga-

wes en die nuwe een, het Gouws bygevoeg,is dat die nuwe uitgawe nie nét ’n formeleof “Kanselafrikaans” weergee nie, maarwel Afrikaans in ál sy gebruiksvorme weer-spieël en ook talle nuutskeppings bevat.

“Wat die mond van vol is, loop die HATvan oor,” het Gouws geskerts.

Pheiffer het gesê die nuwe uitgawe is virdie “volle Afrikaanse taalgemeenskap” ge-skryf. “Van Parow tot Polokwane, van Ka-kamas tot in Kokstad, met die HAT in diehand kom jy daar.”

Werner van Tonder, hooftaalsubredak-teur van Die Burger se nagkantoor, het ge-sê: “Die HAT is vir my soos ’n gereedskap-kis. [Dit] bied die regte gereedskap om Afri-kaans goed te kan gebruik.

“In ons kantoor gebruik ons dit elke dag– ons kan nie daarsonder nie. Dit ontsluitvir ons die taal en verskeie taalkwessies.”

Faan Pistor, ’n bekende taalman en seni-or kopieredigeerder by Media24, was diteens dat dieHAT ook vir hóm baie spesiaalis. “Ek het met dieHAT grootgeword toe ditnog swart, donkerblou en maroen was. Oordie jare het dit ál dikker en beter geword.Ek bly steeds lief vir die hardeband-uitga-we, want ek wil onder ’n boom daarmee kansit.”

Luther het van die sesde uitgawe se sta-tistieke met die gaste gedeel. Die nuweHATbevat digby 100 000 trefwoorde, kollokasies,uitdrukkings, afleidings en samestellings.Altesame 3228 nuwe trefwoorde is opge-neem en die totale woordtelling staan op

2,1 miljoen.Die werk aan HAT6 het se-

we jaar geduur en die nuwewoordeboek het 200 bladsyemeer as sy voorganger en isvan 1 Augustus ook as HATAanlyn op die internet beskik-baar.

Luther het gemeld dat dieHAT se Facebookblad voor-taan as platform sal dien omtaalpraktisyns, joernaliste,akademici en alle gebruikersvan Afrikaans op die hoogte tehou van gereelde toevoegingstot die nuwe, lewende HAT.

“Dis ’n vliegtuig waaraanons bou terwyl Afrikaans syvlerke sprei,” het sy gesê. Die6de uitgawe van die Hand-woordeboek van die Afrikaan-se Taal verskyn op 15 Julie byPearson.

The Baxter Dance Festival is calling for ap-plications for the 2015 line-up.

Following the resounding success of thedance festival’s tenth anniversary last ye-ar, the organisers are calling for entriesfrom dance studios, schools, companies,groups and independent dance-makers, aswell as proposals from choreographers (in-cluding a DVD of recent work) for this ye-ar’s event.

The 2015 Baxter Dance Festival will takeplace from Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 Octo-ber. The festival is made up of a main pro-gramme which will consist of invited andcommissioned works, as well as work by es-tablished professional choreographers andcompanies.

The off-main programme on Saturday 10October will showcase work by up-and-co-ming choreographers (including studentwork) while the fringe programme on Sa-turday 17 October will include work by yo-uth groups, dance schools, school groups,traditional dance groups and others.

The running time for each dance work islimited to ten minutes for the main pro-gramme, five minutes for the off-main pro-gramme and three minutes (fringe) for so-los, duets or trios. The limit for quartets orbigger ensembles is 20 minutes on themain, ten off-main and seven on the fringe.

The Baxter Theatre Centre will providea comprehensive production packagewhich includes lighting, sound, technicalassistance, publicity, box office facilities,printed programmes and pre-show rehear-sal arrangements, making it a hassle-free

Cathy Carstensis the onlyfemale cyclistto be includedin the Legendsof the Pedalhall of fame.

Being the only female cyclist to be in-ducted in theLegendsof thePedalhallof fame is nothing short of remarka-

ble. But Cathy Carstens has had a superbcareer that began back in 1984 and at theage of 52 this Brackenfell resident is stillon her bike, with no intention of quittinganytime soon.

“Before I started cycling I was a WesternProvince 800m athlete, but a serious kneeinjury forced me to quit and that is how Istarted cycling,” said Cathy.

Her list of achievements reads like theperfect script. In 1985 she set the 3000mSouth African track record and won over300 fun rides between 1985 and 1990.

In 1985 shewon themixed tandemsectionof theArgusCycleTour. The following yearshe broke the Argus record for women bymore or less 30 minutes. “I still rememberthat day, everything was just going verywell and I can’t remember the precise time,but I beat the record by about half an hour.After that dream race, I won it for the nextfour consecutive years.”

After winning the national champion-ships in 1990, Cathy took a 12-year break inwhich she raised her two children andstarting her own physiotherapy practice inBrackenfell where she is still workingwithtop sportsmen and women including Mar-iska Strausswhowon the 2014AfricanXCOMTB champion, Peter-JohnWaterboer (SAschools hurdler), Alicia Visser (WP tug ofwar), Zeeke Norris (K1 kickboxer) and Jo-nathan Forlee (national under-20 basket-ball player), to name a few.

After her 12-year absence she made acomeback at the age of 41.

Two years later, competing with the bestin the country, she showed her class by be-ing ranked second in South Africa. Furtheraccolades include gold medals at the SouthAfricanVeteranchampionships from2007 to2010. She took silver at theWorldCup inAus-tria in 2005 and 2006 and gold in 2009. At theWorld Veteran UCI Road champs in Austriashe claimed silver in 2005 and 2006 and wongold in 2008.

One of her proudestmoments remains heroverallWestern Province Cyclist of the Yearaward back in 2008. “What made this awardso special for me was the fact that the awardwas for both men and women. So to walkaway with that award being acknowledgethe very best cyclist irrespective of genderwas fantastic.

“I have overcomemany injuries inmy lifeand I have realised if you never give up ev-erything exists as a possibility,” says Cathy.
