Aspiration and Introduction

The ability to draw communities together and deliver quality has been a foundation of our business since 1860. As one of the oldest architectural practices in Europe, Charles Medland Taylor and Cecil Young grew the business building churches and chapels.

This desire to build quality for the community resonates with many of the aspirations and foundations of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints.

We hope this short introduction serves as a useful document in communicating our passion for quality, and our ability to work harmoniously to a common goal. It is our aspiration, that we may have the opportunity to speak with your Church and develop a relationship such that in the future you can trust us as your architects with the design and development of your chapels and temples.

Brief History

As already mentioned, Taylor Young grew in Manchester in the 19th Century delivering ecclesiatical and civic buildings. The practice continued through the 20th Century, steadily growing until the 1990’s where under new leadership, it grew to the practice that it is today.

Currently the practice is under the guidance of 8 directors, is wholly owned by 3 directors and continues to deliver projects of the highest quality from 3 offices. Whilst church building is not as prevalent as it was during the time of the practice founders, the attention to detail, quality, landscape design and impact on the community remain as important now as it did then.

With over 100 staff working across many sectors, we undertake architecture, planning, landscape, interior design and 3d visulisation to ensure that all the core services required to design the best buildings are under one roof.

Common Themes

A thread of common themes run through our work that appear to resonate with the Church of the latter day saints, such as our attention to quality, heritage and timelessness, landscape design, involvement of community, the ability to refurbish and renew as well as to build new inspirational buildings.

QualityWe are very proud of the quality and attention to detail that we deliver with our projects. The use of natural material and craftsmen is essential to us, and our ability to communicate our purpose through our architecture leaves an enduring impact on the users of our buildings.

Interior and exteriorFor us, the quality of the building should permeate seamlessly from inside to outside, from internal finishes and ornament, to the quality of the building facades, to the landscape, to the impact it will have on the wider community. Use of light and colour play an important part in our designs creating calming and inspiring environments for the users.

LandscapeAs we have expressed already, the flow of the design from internal to external spaces unites the whole experience, and the setting for the building in the landscape is a fundamental feature of our projects. Our dedicated landscape team delivers exquisite solutions for both hard and soft landscaping to ensure the first impression is always the right impression.

Refurbishment and New Builddepending on the situation, it is sometimes preferable to create a new building, but equally there are times when refurbishing and remodelling existing buildings is more appropriate.

We always try to create a new impression and make refurbished buildings look and feel new.

All the projects we show here were tired and dilapidated 1960’s buildings before we fundamentally improved them. In the design, we were looking at the architecture, and also at the operation and long term running costs. Atlas Works

Community InputInvolving the community, in all senses of the word can be a real inspiration for the design and the community for who the project will sit at its heart.

For many years we have placed community consultation at the centre of what we do, and we are acknowledged nationally as leaders in developing projects through wider consultation and participation.

We have a range of techniques to involve and inform people from workshops, to board games, to drop in meetings to interactive design sessions. We strive to maximise the feelings of involvement and empowerment.

Heritage ProjectsOur use of quality skills and workmanship extends into a wide range of sensitive projects in and around historic and listed buildings. The balance of understanding when to restore, and when to intervene with new, is essential in preserving and enhancing our architectural heritage.

We are currently involved with a number of important historic buildings; the historic markets in Ashton and stalybridge, the town hall facades in Bolton and dukinfield, and work in the conservation area in Kendal adjacent to a Grade 1 listed building.

Range of Work

On the following pages, we present you with a range of projects that illustrates these common themes and demonstrates the quality of the product that we deliver for our clients.

Kendal CollegeAt Kendal, on the edge of the lake district National Park, we have worked for a number of years on a variety of projects for the college.

The projects all have in common a deep rooted desire to make something special and the ability to fuse the culture and heritage of the area with a distinctively modern and contemporary solution.

This approach has secured us many awards, from local Civic societies, local authorities and sustainability groups.

Ashton MarketThe historic market in Ashton has always been at the heart of its community, growing through the 19th Century and serving as a thriving centre until a devastating fire in 2004. After being empty for a number of years, Taylor Young worked with the local authority and traders to preserve and rebuild the best of the historic fabric of the building, at the same time as create a modern and elegant new roof structure to cover the whole of the indoor market area.

Bolton and Oldham 6th Form Colleges delivering a lot of education projects naturally brings us into contact with many younger people, and working closely with them to realise their aspirations and desires is immensely exciting.

As custodians of the next generation, showing them what can be achieved through high quality projects, such as their places of education, is a message that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Given our breadth of projects we have captured just a few to give a flavour of our approach and delivery. For a much wider appreciation of our sectors and projects, please visit our website;

Kendal College loreto College sustainability

Obviously an enormous agenda, and one where we have been heavily involved for many years. We are IsO 14001 accredited and have delivered many projects to the highest standards.

Whilst we appreciate that BREEAM does not necessarily guarantee high performance standards, it is a good indicator and our range of BREEAM ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’ buildings is testament to this. Recently the BRE rewarded us with the award for the highest scoring BREEAM education building of 2009 for loreto college.

loreto College is practical and treats environmental issues holistically and sensitively. Whilst in a tight urban site, the building balances carefully the visible and the hidden environmental measures.

It makes a massive difference to the students and how the building prepares for the future - whatever that may bring.

staff

staff well-being is an essential part of life at Taylor Young. This is reflected in the atmosphere in the office and the events that go on outside the office.

We have a sports and social pot of money that funds extra-curricular events; cycling, camping, theatre trips, chocolate eating, paintballing, go karting, skiing, trips to Prague and Rotterdam and many more.

This approach not only sees us accredited with Investors in People but we were also recently awarded with the RIBA Regional Award for “Best Practice to work for”. This was from a staff survey and reflects that character of the office, so we are very proud of this award.
