HOT SOUPS!Broccoli & Cheese,Loaded Potato Soup & don’t forget our Chili! YUMMM!

The War on CoolJeff Mund had something incredible planned for the corner of Mill and Castell Streets – an outdoor food park with professional kitchens housed in retro, Airstream-style trailers, each specializing in a different type of cuisine. A high-end food court right here in beautiful downtown New Braunfels, just like they have in real cities. Of course City Council shot it down, 6-1 (Everybody vs District One’s Richard Zapata).

This project, the Mill StrEAT Eatery, was approved, not only by Planning & Zoning, but City Staff as well. Council, in their wisdom, selected this issue as the one to take a stand against them on. If ever we expected a rubber-stamp on something, it was this beautiful project. Unbelievable.

According to the Houston-owned Herald-Zeitung, Mayor Gale Pospisil said she voted against it because “It seems unfair” to other businesses in the area, possibly because the Eatery, which would cater to pedestrians and bicyclists, didn’t have off-street parking available, which would put it firmly among the over 70% of downtown businesses which don’t have off-street parking either. And by the way, downtown parking is City Hall’s failure. They’ve been spinning their wheels on that issue for the better part of a decade, without a plan in sight.

District Three’s Ron Reeves and District Four’s Sandy Nolte expressed concern that alcohol, Satan’s own thirst quencher, might be served at the property. You know, beer and wine and liquor, like they have at McAdoo’s, and Myron’s, which are right across the street from the proposed site, and any one of the 17 other downtown businesses that serve it… 18 if you count mass at Saints Peter and Paul. Anyway, Mund made it clear he was not applying for an alcohol permit. It was just brought up to poison the discussion. Well done.

(Hey, here’s a question: Why isn’t McAdoo’s, which is located inside of NB’s 98 year old post office, part of the City’s historic district and therefore subject to district rules? Every other building down there is. The district’s lines are gerrymandered around McAdoo’s like a jigsaw puzzle. If we’re going to impose restrictions on property owners to respect history, it seems to us that the 1915 post office should receive special protections, not exemptions. The owner, Pat Wiggins, is, of course, well connected at City Hall.)

Sure, those arguments were ridiculous, but it was District

Two’s Mark Goodner that came up with the quote of the night, stating that the food court “might actually hurt businesses there already.” Wow – state

protection of favored businesses (McAdoo’s?). And this guy’s a

Republican. When the Elephants in Texas go near-Soviet, there is no doubt that America is doomed. Welcome to Europe, y’all.

The fact is that both the Mayor and Goodner, like many long-time and elderly residents of our fair city, hate the idea of a new demographic invading downtown. Food courts attract a certain “type” deemed undesirable by the post-trophy-quality wives and tan-sport-coat enthusiasts of NB – and that type is “cool”.

After getting rid of those awful tourists on the rivers, (and their money), City Hall has set its sights on cool people. People that read books. And ride bikes. And know who Bergman is. People who unanimously understand that there is a world beyond our city’s limits, and whose conversations transcend their own day-to-day business, the number of civic awards they’ve received, this morning’s weather report and next week’s school lunches. These people rarely, if ever, cause trouble for anybody, but they do something worse in the minds of NB’s elite: They, simply by existing, make uncool people uncomfortable with their own mundane life choices. And the culturally lame will not allow that to stand.

City Hall’s message to cool people is clear. “Take your public radio, and your Sam Rockwell movies, and your Thai food, and get the heck out. This town is for small thinkers and conformists.” Here at the TX Citizen, we object to that. There’s a war against awesomeness here, and as the only remotely cool media outlet in town we’re going to go ahead and fight it. We want swanky bowling alleys that double as swingin’ cocktail lounges. We want usable bike paths to go both this-way-and-that. We want an Alamo Drafthouse. And we want that gods-damned food court.

This isn’t over.

Dear TX Citizen,I have been a life long resident of New Braunfels. I enjoy your articles you

have in the 1st word. The Scooter Store article as far as I’m concerned was the best yet.

On Walnut Ave. where they are doing the construction, was the person that drew up the plans high, drunk or brain dead? (Why pick just one? - Editor.) There is no space for a vehicle to pass (even after completion) if there is an accident, broke down vehicle or emergency vehicle to safely pass by.

I also understand that the City of New Braunfels has no idea when this project is to be finished (the City of New Braunfels seems not to have a clue about a lot things). Also why where all of the old trees where cut down? I realize that some trees had to be removed but it seems to me there was a lot more cut down.

With the rate that out city is growing, why has it taken over 30 years to talk about and make plans to widen Walnut Ave. going up the hill towards Loop 337? In the 1980’s the traffic going up and down that area was already extremely congested and many times I can remember traffic at a complete standstill. How can that area be widened with a valley/drop off on one side and a rock cliff on the other? I realize that when the road was designed and built the technology was very primitive compared to now. I’m not sure when or what plans the city has for this but when will this get resolved?

Last but not least, Seguin St. to FM 725. I realize that from County Line Road that is Guadalupe County but the city limits go past Ferryboat Ln. I remember in the 1980s the traffic then was terrible and the city limits ended at County Line Rd. Now there are many new subdivisions plus the existing ones and the traffic is many times worse. Why hasn’t FM 725 been widened like they did to Hwy 46 several years ago? Is it because Hwy 46 is a State Hwy and FM 725 is not, or is it because an County Commissioner or some other local, county or state official doesn’t live out here or have to drive FM 725 everyday on a regular basis? Or is it that nobody cares?

I dread each time when I have to drive to New Braunfels. There are many accidents. The construction belly dumps drive too fast and I’ve personally seen them either run vehicles off the road or tailgate anybody that’s in front of them. It has happened to me several times. Each time I’ve have called the company they are leased to and the police or Guadalupe County Sheriff’s dept. Nothing has been done about it.

I was a truck driver for almost 20 years and I’ve logged more that 1,750,000 safe accident free miles. I never tailgated or drove over the posted speed limit. I realize that this has nothing to do with the heavy traffic on that part of FM 725, but I’m sure if it were wider there would be fewer accidents and less traffic.

Once again thank you for you great articles and the fact that you honestly report and point out things that the city doesn’t want us to know about. Thank you for your time.

David

Thank you, sir.

Last Friday night, the wee men of Extreme Midget Wrestling kept a massive crowd at Dirty’s Bar & Q on its feet for an exhibition of their brand of hand to hand to boot to turnbuckle combat. Full-sized grappler “Nacho Dirty” showed up to throw down some mayhem as well. All in all, small stature wrestling at Dirty’s was a huge, hardcore success.

That same night, a little further south, NB’s own Billy Buch hit the ring in the main event matchup at the Texas Legacy 17 MMA card at Cowboy’s Dancehall. Billy lost in the first round after submitting to a brutal flying armbar applied by his opponent, Patrick Ybarra . Buch’s record now stands at (3-2-0), while Ybarra remains undefeated at (4-0-0). BROUGHT TO YOU BY

10 AD SALES 830.483.9563

By Gustavo Arellano

Dear Mexican: The pinche Republicans are making a gigante ruido about their “Hispanic” senators in Congress. Wachale! Lets call a pendejo a pendejo. Please discuss with tu audienca what Mexicans really think about Cubans in these Estados Unidos.

El Güero Tejano (no Cubano)

As a recent transplant from Miami to Albuquerque, I was wondering what is the Mexican’s take on the privileged status of our preferred border-crossers, the Cubans. If a Cuban manages to get his little toe on dry land in the U.S. he is immediately given a new Toyota, an American Express card and the keys to the city of Hialeah.

Aturdido Floridian

Are Cubans Mexicans with connections??

Quiero Ron

Dear Readers: Next to Puerto Ricans and negritos, no other ethnic group gets pegged as the eternal enemy of Mexicans like Cubans. If you believe coños like Rush Limbaugh, Mexicans despise Cubans because it’s “a race thing. [Cubans are] just not quite dark—as dark [as Mexicans], and they’re oriented toward work.” (Rush obviously never met a beauty from Los Altos de Jalisco, or a paisa from Sinaloa). But Mexicans for the most part actually like Cubans, and definitely more so that Puerto Ricans.

We enjoy Cuban rum and cigars, they believe in curanderos like us, their Spanish is as garbled as ours, we both love guayaberas, and Cuban music legends Beny Moré and Perez Prado spent so much time in Mexico that their tunes are part of the Mexican songbook (multiple bandas have covered Moré’s “La Culebra,” while “Parece Que Va Llover” was memorably sung by Pedro Infante and Luis Aguilar in their 1951 film ¡A Toda Maquina!).

What does drive Mexicans crazy about Cubans, however, isn’t so much what they do or who they are but how gabachos treat them: as gods. One niggling fact: Cuban music inspires excessive mainstream media coverage in relation to its actual popularity in

the United States, especially when compared to the ubiquity of Mexican regional music en el Norte. Another one: gabachos’ insistance that mariachis play “Guantanamera.”

Even more infuriating for Mexicans is the immigration narrative gabachos have constructed of Cubans and Mexican. While Americans opened the gates to Cuban refugees as a Cold War ploy and continue to let said refugees come illegally into the U.S. as long as they land via sea, gabachos have never extended the same courtesy to Mexicans or our Central American brothers during our civil wars. You can’t hate the Cubans for their special status, but you can hate gabachos for this preposterous double standard. As if Mexicans needed another reason to hate gabas…

I’m so annoyed with you printing the letters from idiots. The vast majority of white people don’t hate Mexicans. We don’t sit around bitching about Mexicans taking our jobs. Most of us don’t hate anyone. A lot of us love the fact that America is a melting pot of cultures where we share ideas, music, art, and we just plain love each other. When you print the letters from idiots, it implies that we all feel that way. We don’t.

There are idiots of all races, creeds, and colors, and the idiots that write ignorant letters to you are not typical of us. They don’t represent the majority. There are different colors and cultures because God is an artist and she needed colors to decorate the world. Most of us celebrate our differences. Giving these idiots a forum is like putting a booger on a Picasso. It just don’t belong.

No Hate

Dear Gabacho: Gracias for your heartfelt letter—now, can you please indoctrinate Congress and other idiot gabachos with your wisdom? Because, as you can see with the current amnesty battle, they need it.

Uncle Esel,I recently bought new furniture for

the first time in a long time. I did some comparison shopping at a couple of stores and in the end I ended up buying from the one that offered a free 42” tv with a complete living roon set. My question is, did I really get a very good deal getting a free tv?

Vicki

Dear Vicki,The free with purchase gig has been very

popular and started in the late 70s. The free TV offer however, did not really start until the more recent advent of flat screen TVs.

Furniture is itself similar to the jewelry business in that the markup in cost is very high, but unlike jewelry, the expense to sell furniture is much higher due to its bulkiness and labor costs as well as a warranty costs and damages that occur in handling it. This difference is why you don’t see huge percent off sales in the furniture business except when they go out of business. So about the free TV, It wasn’t free. The cost of the TV is absorbed into the overall price of the furniture and is the same as if the furniture itself was on a regular sale price.

The TVs are frequently lower level brands or basic models and are usually at the end of their model year so they get the best possible price on them. In the end, you could get furniture alone at a sale price and buy a TV at an electronics store on sale and get a slightly better deal and you would end up with a TV with better features. Esel is still waiting for that free kegerator with purchase deal at the rent-to-own place.

Love, K

Dear Uncle Esel,Were you watching the Superbowl?

I was wondering what you thought of the halftime show and about the lights going out.

Thanks,Lonnie

Dear Lonnie,You do know there was a football game

going on? I only ask because you don’t ask me about the game or the outcome. I’ll comment on that in just a moment.

Esel is wondering if any act has ever not lip-synced their performance in a halftime show. Even when there are acts that I do like, the fact that they don’t actually play live really bothers me. It’s kind like going to NASCAR and everyone drives 55 and gives themselves proper following distance and uses turn signals. Even though I don’t care for Beyonce or Destiny’s Child, I could respect them more if they could sing live and without the use of Auto-Tune (that pitch correcting device) to make them sound better. It would have been funny to have the power failure during the show and

catch the lip syncing act unaware. All in all the people involved handled the failure well and it was good to see the progress that has occurred in the Big Easy who now during a power outage have refrained from looting.

So back to the actual game. It turns out that the big losers are companies (including one here in town) that provide licensed products. The 49ers were poised to generate far greater sales in products had they won, but they pale in comparison to what a Patriots, Giants or Cowboys win would have brought. Sorry, I made a funny there…Cowboys win Super Bowl. Yeah right.

Love K

Uncle Ken Esel,What in hell is this administration

doing? Now they want to give women front line infranty jobs? Are they out of their cotton-picking minds? Do you really think women should be on the front lines? I love women and think they should get paid the same and be treated the same in the workplace, but this is gone too far. Esel, you’re probably closer to my age from what I can tell and I want to hear what you think.

Sincerely,Gunny Bike PathUSMC Retired

Well Gunny, I’ve been going into combat with a woman

for decades and I have the scars to show for it. Mrs Esel is the meanest (hope she’s not reading this) warrior I have ever seen and I’d rather call Mike Tyson a sissy before tangling with her. But she’s an exception to the rule.

I, like you, believe that women should garner the same pay and respect as any man and in most cases, they probably deserve more than a man because they usually do a better job, but on the front line, different story. We’ve gotten sold on the idea that we don’t fight wars like WWII or Vietnam any more, but the fact is our society will not react well when women are killed in battle or taken prisoner. We saw this in the Gulf War when Iraqis killed and captured female army troops, and who can’t admit that adding the prospect of rape to the abuses captured men already suffer wouldn’t make things worse.

Unfortunately, this is a politically correct social experiment that heaven forbid, will one day backfire immensely.

Love, K

“The Perfect Crime” Black Smoked SaisonOne special thing I like about collaborations is the propensity towards making something entirely unheard of. When you get all these super-creative brewers with their own styles and tendencies in one room and have them decide on a beer, something is bound to happen. One guy can pipe up, “Lets make THIS old unusual style! An archaeologist gave me the recipe.” Another chimes in, “Sounds good, but lets put some SOUR in that mother! That’ll kick it up a notch.” Yet a third may suggest, “Ok, and then lets put it all into oak casks and blend it in a year.” You get these guys one-upping each other, but knowing what will work and what won’t. It’s a truly amazing thing, and some of the best breweries out there aren’t just a wunderkind making a beer by stock-holder committee, but a small beer-illuminati using their own means and methods to make something better than the sum of it’s parts. Maybe even something that defies categorization.

I had a beer on tap the other day that perfectly exemplified this ideal. It was a collaboration between three brewers with three separate but distinct styles. You have Stillwater, an American small-batch artisanal outfit with a penchant for farmhouse ales and wild yeast. Long-time readers will remember my review of their Existent Ale, with the slightly creepy Nietzsche label. Then you have Evil Twin, a Danish high-concept brewery that specializes in everything from a Double IPA to an Imperial Stout. Their beers are as potently strong-bodied as they are uniquely inspired. Of course, Stone Brewing needs no introduction. Everything from Japanese green tea IPAs, to chili ales, to red wine barrel aged saisons, Stone is one impressive treasure-trove of interesting beers.

The three breweries had a meeting of the minds and came up with a “saison” that stretches the definition to it’s absolute limits. Called a “Black Smoked Saison”, it pours a thin, inky black with just a layer of tan bubbles. Now, I had a specific quandary about this beer;

should it be served at a lower temperature like a saison, or at a warmer temperature like a dark/black beer? Luckily, I was able to sample both ways and found that it doesn’t change all that much between the two, besides being slightly more aromatic warmer. The nose was mainly dark, roasted malt, with a good hit of herbal/earthy hops. The taste itself was... interesting. It was almost like I was drinking two different beers! On one hand, there was the light mouthfeel and crisp, refreshing finish of a solid saison, but on the other there was this roasted chocolate bitterness and even a touch of some dark, overripe fruit. On top of it all, but kind of meshing quite well between the two very different “souls” of this beer was a very methodical hop profile. Now, I’d expect someone to just toss in a big fat American hop variety in there and call it a day, but this blend of East Kent Golding, Chinook, and Cluster hops adds a great kind of green, earthy backbone. It allows both of the sides to come into light in their own right, all blasting forth in three-part harmony.

Civil Rights: The Government Taketh Away, then Giveth Back

February is Black History Month, and I thought it might be nice to do a column that talked about libertarian ideals on race. It’s not a topic I would typically address because, to be honest, I don’t think it’s significant. I don’t think race is a major factor in modern life, and like most libertarians, I expect government to be color blind. But, there can be no doubt that libertarianism has not made the inroads it should across racial lines and particularly in the black community. If that’s ever going to change, libertarians are going to have to open up and defend their views through a racial prism.

Let me start by pointing out that black libertarians are not quite as rare as unicorns. There are a few black voices that focus on liberty. Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell are both well know syndicated columnists who are friendly to libertarian ideas. So too is Larry Elder, a pundit I first encountered on talk radio in Southern California. I have even heard the occasional libertarian sounding quote from Chris Rock and Bill Cosby. Even so, it’s safe to say that libertarian thought has not widely resonated with the black community.

Perhaps the biggest reason for this is that black voters have, for years, been a captured base for the Democratic Party. When 80 percent or so of black voters identify themselves with a single party, it’s not surprising that you don’t see much representation in other parties. This has been the case since Truman was elected. Truman’s desegregation of the military and regulations eliminating racial bias in federal hiring can be seen as true advances in civil rights at the time, and his actions were rewarded with votes. LBJ cemented this attitude by supporting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when Goldwater, a Republican with clear libertarian tendencies would not. When someone seems to be on your side, it’s hard not to like them, and any time there is even the slightest wavering, you can depend on the Democratic Party to remind black Americans of this history and even distort the history of Republicans and libertarians in this regard.

The truth is that black voters have been conditioned to see the government (mostly the federal government) as a benefactor. Whether it’s Lincoln’s actions in the Civil War or the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the power

of government has repeatedly been used to protect the black community, but no one every seems to ask, “protect them from whom?”

When it comes to civil rights, all of the advancements made by the federal government have only served to protect black Americans from government. The legislation that was offered to protect would have been wholly unnecessary if not for previous legislation designed to repress. We had a civil war in this country because the government supported slavery as an institution. Brown v. Board of Education was an important step only because it overturned Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld state required segregation. Rosa Parks was arrested for breaking a law when she refused to leave the white section of the bus in Montgomery. In all of the cases where the government stepped in, it was in response to a problem that had been created largely by government. It’s fair to say that Democrats used the power of the federal government to advance civil rights for black Americans, but it’s equally fair to point out that they never should have had to.

The libertarian argument looks at things from the other side. By what right does the government (federal or otherwise) dictate how Americans of different races interact? It’s a matter of freedom of association. Plessy v. Ferguson was wrong not just because “separate but equal” isn’t equal. It was wrong because government shouldn’t have the authority to force people not to interact because of race. If that’s true, though, it’s also important to recognize that the government doesn’t have the authority to force people to interact because of race either. And that’s the very reason that many libertarians are leery of much of the civil rights law we see in this country. The problem isn’t solved by legislating that people must treat each other equally; it’s solved by requiring that government treat people equally and leave all of us alone to associate as we please.

A near perfect example of this can be found in professional sports. There is, perhaps, no industry where black Americans have been more successful, and that success wasn’t due to government interference; it was due to market pressure.

Most of us recognize the importance of Jackie Robinson becoming the first black player in major league baseball, but Robinson’s story was a long time in coming. Discussion of

integration in baseball began as early as 1901, and when blacks were not allowed to play on white teams, they developed teams of their own.

These racially segregated teams had occasion to play one another, and there was no question that color was not an issue in competitiveness. The concern had always been, rather, that white audiences wouldn’t support teams with black players. It was economics as much as racism which first kept black players from the field and ultimately it was economics that insured they would be on it. Once a single major league team had broken this color barrier and profited by it, other teams were forced to make the same moves or be outplayed by teams that were choosing from a larger pool of talent. (In fairness, I should mention that basketball followed a similar pattern and might be said to have led the way for black Americans in sports.)

Another example can be seen with black Americans in the entertainment industry. Racism and segregation lasted only so long as it was economically viable. This isn’t an aberration; it’s just how the market works. Untapped talent and untapped markets represent an opportunity to make money. Any person that puts their racist attitudes above their profit motive will soon be trounced by their competition. If left alone by government, the market will assess when segregation is no longer acceptable, and changes will be made earlier than even if you try to force them.

This is the model that libertarians want on race, one where the market decides and government is restrained in the shaping of social norms. Government should treat all its citizens equally, and the federal government should be active in seeing that states do the same, but government should never be allowed to project their values over those of the private citizen. Where we’ve seen government act to enforce values, it has much more frequently trampled rights than protected them, so it’s better that they stay out of the values business altogether. Would that mean that private citizens have license to be racist? Yes, but it also means that they have license not to be. In the grand majority of cases this will yield a better result, and in all cases it will result in more freedom for everyone.
