ACT I

(Written as a multi-role monologue,but can be performed as a group pieceby using stage directions.)

LAURA is stood alone. She's in reflection, butnot deeply so. She talks directly to theaudience (unless otherwise noted).

LAURAIt all started with a simple tweet. All I said, inthat tiny 140 character sentence was - "OMFG, Gagahas more followers than the Pope. Religion 0 - 1Gaga." Little was I to know the absolute circus thatitd kick up... It all started when someone calledjesuslovesme tweeted back. He said

@JESUSLOVESMEAppearing on-stage to cut her off.

Jesus has more followers than Gaga. God too. Goddoesnt keep score.

LAURAWell, that of course made everything explode. Thething with social media is everyone has theiropinion and gets to say it. The problem with theInternet, of course, is that if youre on theInternet, youre never wrong...

@JESUSLOVESMEWell, none of Gods creatures are wrong, are they?In his divine wisdom he made us all equals.

@TROLLOLAppearing almost from nowhere, butting inanother unwanted opinion. And they know it.

Well, not really. Gaga sold more records than me sowere not equal.

LAURA

Then it got bad. (Beat.) Whenever people mentionreligion, you get the zealots and the extremeatheists. In this case, it was neither. It wassomeone called @trollol and, well, theyre whatsknown as a troll. They go out of their way to stirthings up.

@TROLLOLNo we don't.

LAURATo @TROLLOL.

Yes you do, were not getting into this again.

LAURAOf course, then there are the people that think they

are the peacekeepers of the world wide web. Theygenerally just annoy people and incite them tofurther pointless so-called debate. They don't meanto, they just seem to believe they can calm peopledown and should be listened to.

Hey man just relax. Gagas cool and Jesus is chilltoo yknow? I mean, you can love them both. Thatshow were equal we can all be loved.

LAURAStepping in quickly at first with adisapproving look at @trollol, before resuminga natural pace.

Of course, all the attempted quietening of theargument does is provide more fuel for the flames.But what I was trying to say with my original tweet

was - doesnt it say something about society whenmusic outstrips what once controlled the world?

@JESUSLOVESMEChrist didnt control the world though, he saved itfrom its sins. What has Gaga done?

Jesus died for our sins and made people love eachother. Gaga made some tinkling about bad romances

the opposite of love.

LAURASnapping in to prevent further interruptions.She silences the other characters and sendsthem away. Left alone on stage, she makes her

point.

Bottom line is, its not what I was talking about, agenuine point of concern, that defines how society

is going. Its the way people converse to each other separate rooms, countries and continents. Never

seeing who theyre fighting, allowing them to notcare about what their words mean and do. Social

media, has removed the necessity of society andwere at each others throats. What does it sayabout us, that belief is succumbing to pop and thatculture is becoming devoid of personal familiarity?
