Economic growth, increasing prosperity, a growing rate of urbanisation and rising per capita energy consumption has led to increased demand for energy in India.

With huge renewable resource availability and potential, India has the fth largest power generation portfolio worldwide with a power generation capacity of 304.76 GW.

The target of National Solar Mission has been up-scaled to 175 GW of grid connected solar power by 2022, which creates a positive environment among investors keen to tap into India's renewable energy potential across the value chain.

India has the 5th largest power generation portfolio in the world and its current renewable energy contribution stands at 44.812 GW which includes 27.441 GW of Wind power and 8.062 GW of Solar power installed capacity in the country (as on 31.07.2016).

Third largest installed capacity of Concentrated Solar Power. Renewable energy contributes 14.7% of the total installed capacity in the country as on 31.07.2016.

India's Annual Solar installations to grow over four times by 2017; 10.50 GW of utility-scale solar and grid connected rooftop solar capacity will be added by 2016-17.

Wind energy accounts for nearly 61% (27.441 GW) of renewable installed capacity, thereby making India the world's fourth largest wind energy producer.

Graduating from Megawatts to Gigawatts in Renewable Energy production with an ambitious target of 175 GW by 2022 under the National Solar Mission, seemingly the largest renewable capacity expansion program in the world, the Renewable Energy sector offers massive investment opportunities across the value chain.

India's Annual Solar installations are expected to grow over four times by 2017. 10.50 GW of utility-scale solar and grid connected rooftop solar capacity will be added during scal 2016-17.

Within the next six years, India needs $300 billion for renewables and grid efciency, with $100 billion needed for solar alone to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious plan for energy growth in the country.

Commitments of over $100 billon dollars from global companies in the Indian renewable energy sector have been received since August 2016. Taiwan's Foxconn and India's Adani announced $20 billion between them, with $10 billion for solar. The three major global Asian companies, between them, committed $20 billion. It all builds momentum.

International companies like Fortum of Finland, Canada's Skypower, Taiwan's Foxconn, SoftBank of Japan, ENGIE of France and First Solar from the U.S. have evinced interest. This global inux of renewable investment is reverberating locally, with Indian fossil-dominated utility industries getting in on the action. Two large oil companies, Indian Oil Corporation and Oil India, which are partly or fully state-owned, have begun permitting a 1-GW solar farm in Madhya Pradesh.

India's largest coal-red electric utilities, the partly state-owned Tata Power, and NTPC, are competing to become the biggest players in developing renewable energy. Oil & Natural Gas Corporation plans a "reasonable share” in its overall business mix for renewables.

However, Challenges abound.

Massive investments are required to harness untapped Renewable Energy resources.

Innovative solutions include generation-based incentives (GBIs), capital and interest subsidies, viability gap funding (VGF), concessional nance, scal incentives etc.

Advanced technology is needed to match global innovations and ensure economies of scale for af fordable manufacturing.

Deployment of Smart Storage systems, Smart Grid and Smar t meters will change the ecosystem of power generation and consumption in India.

Grid upgradation and modernization is essential to absorb voltage uctuations in RE power evacuation.

The electricity generation target for the year 2016-17 has been xed as 1178 Billion Unit (BU). i.e. growth of around 6.38% over actual generation of 1107.822 BU for the previous year (2015-16).

While energy requirement is estimated at 8,64,691 MU, only 6,58,648 MU is available. During the current year 2016-17 (Upto 31.12.2016), the Peak Demand is about 159 GW and the Installed Capacity is 310 GW with generation mix of Thermal (69.4%), Hydro (13.9%), Renewable (14.8%) and Nuclear (1.9%). Despite an extensive network of Transmission lines being developed over the years for evacuating power produced by different electricity generating stations, distributing the same to the consumers has its pitfalls.

The Challenges:

T&D losses, as high as 50%, have rendered utility companies as white elephants. Less efcient assets, – Improper operational practices – Inadequate maintenance practices – Ageing of assets - Unavailability of funds for renovations and modernization have contributed to losses.

Poor quality of equipment lead to frequent outages and poor efciency increases losses in the system. Inefciency of distribution system is affecting performance of public sector distribution utilities resulting into deteriorating nancial health.

Conserving Right-of-Way (RoW), minimizing impact on natural resources, coordinated development of cost effective transmission corridor, exibility in upgradation of transfer capacity of lines matching with power transfer requirement are major areas of concern in development of transmission network in the country.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Policy Makers, Regulators, Power Producers, Investors, Project Developers, Energy Utilities Consultants, Financial Institutions, Renewable Energy rms, Thermal Power Producers.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING:

Build relationships with industry peers

Connect with policy makers on regulatory and compliance issues

Gain the latest insight on how new projects are moving forward
