POTENTILLAThis shrub is a great species for bonsai especially due to the

wonderful trunks. It is extremely hardy. Grow it in full sun

but watch the water as they need plenty of it. As a result

deeper pots are used and the soil mix should contain a good

amount of organic material. Deadwood should be treated with

lime sulfur tinted with some black ink to give a more natural

appearance.

To make the Potentilla fruticosa `Kobolt´ flower, you need to let it grow almost uncontrolled (no pruning) from mid spring. Controlled back pruning of branches in earlier spring is necessary, afterwards leaving branches grow unattended. When flower buds appear in summer, very long branches can be pruned away keeping the shorter flowering branches.Letting a few long branches growing keeps other branches shorter, taking away energy from the growth of other branches. Later these overgrown branches are removed after fulfilling their task. from Morten Albeck

OUTDOOR STAND BUILDING PROJECTLAST year we all enjoyed making outdoor bonsai stands for the ABS Learning Seminars and finding great homes for them in our gardens. Many members expressed interest in making

more stands this year. Myron is ready to set up his assembly line again for our July meeting

BUT we need to decide what styles to build. We will be limited to two designs for the project.

On this page are ideas for us to work from. We need to know what the membership wants to

build. Send an email or call Pauline with the stand you would like to add to your

collection. Also include how many stands you would like built.

VOTE ONLY IF YOU WANT STANDS PLEASE!

Sanding (Insert Groan Here)It’s tempting to screw this proj-ect together immediately, but I’dsuggest you do all you can to re-sist the urge to assemble.

A better bet is for you to sandall your pieces to remove marksand dings. This helps get themready for whatever finish you’llbe applying (paint, deck stain, tung oil or nothing).

Once the faces and edges havebeen sanded, you need to “break

the edges” of all the boards. Thisis pretty simple to do. Just grabsome #120-grit sandpaper andtake a couple of licks on all theedges of each board (you’re try-ing to remove any sharp edges). This will make the bench morecomfortable to sit on and less like-ly to splinter when it gets wet.

Leg AssemblyThis bench goes together quick-ly. Chuck a bit in your drill to give

you a 3⁄16" pilot hole and a coun-tersink simultaneously. These bitsare available from most home-supply or hardware stores.

Begin by assembling one ofthe leg structures. First find a pieceof scrap that’s 41⁄2" wide and placeit between two of the leg pieces.

Center the top cross brace onthe two legs, flush everything up,then glue and screw the cross

brace to the legs using two screwsin each. You can use polyurethaneglue or a water-resistant glue suchas Titebond II.

Put another piece of scrap 2x4against the top cross brace andcenter the low cross brace belowthat scrap. Then glue and screwthe low cross brace to the legs.

Next, put two more legs ontop of the cross braces and placethe 41⁄2" scrap spacer betweenthem. Glue and screw these twolegs to the cross braces. Repeatthis same procedure for the otherleg assembly. You’re almost done.

Plug It UpFor a finished look, we took a fewminutes to plug the holes madeby the countersink. Our coun-tersink made a 3⁄8"-diameter hole.

You can plug the hole withstore-bought 3⁄8" plugs or 3⁄8"-diameter dowels. We took some3⁄8" x 3⁄8" square stock, whittledone end and glued it in place. The

Old business• MABS update Great conference. Each club will receive just under $1000. Our club

changed the method of selling raffle tickets and it was deemed a success. Three club members also won 3 of the 6 demo trees! Next year we are in charge of vending. STAND UP AND GIVE A CHEER to our own DR. DAVID PATON for his EXCEPTIONAL JOB as the new MABS treasurer. Many thanks, David, for all your work.

• Stand building Design ideas were discussed and drawings or pictures of each design are to be published. Member will be asked to vote.

New business• Ideas were discussed for the August meeting. It was decided to visit Mark Comstock’s

nursery. A bring your own tree workshop with Nick Lenz is being considered as a possible additional club activity. Since his workshop is limited to a smaller number of people, it was suggested that the regular meeting’s activity allow for participation of all members. NOTE: Nick is no longer scheduling sessions so we will not be able to visit him

• After discussion, a motion was made and seconded to have Frank Mihalic for a workshop for the October meeting.

Miscellaneous announcements• Many thanks to Mary Madison for an informative, practical, and hands on approach to tropical

bonsai. Crocodiles, scorpions, and drug dealers: Mary has handled them all. Mary’s sharing of her expertise and collecting stories provided us with a great bonsai learning day.

. Adjournment A motion to adjourn was made and seconded. Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted Sandra Kiszkiel secretary - MHBS
