Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, People of Our Lady, Mother of the Church Parish, What a surprise, two thousand years ago, Pharisees tried to catch Jesus with trick question about taxes. We are amazed at the brilliant answer Jesus gave back to them. There is no doubt that all need to participate in expens-es for public services. It does not matter whether it was centuries ago or it is now. Legally established structures need to be supported.

October is a month of Respect Life. This year’s theme for this special program is “Be not afraid”. We read in the letter of Cardinal Timothy Dolan:

God isn't a detached, distant observer to our pain; the Eternal Son became man and Himself experienced im-mense suffering—for you and for me. His wounds indi-cate the very essence of our identity and worth: we are loved by God. There are times we may doubt the value of our own lives or falter at the thought of welcoming and embracing the life of another. But reflecting on the healed wounds of the Risen Christ, we can see that even our most difficult trials can be the place where God man-ifests his victory. He makes all things beautiful. He makes all things new. He is the God of redemption.

The whole mission of Jesus Christ is to give us the life in fullness. To live in God, to be with Him without end, and also to take care of life entrusted to us -- life from the very beginning to passing away. And the mission of Jesus is extended to the Church. It is significant that at this time and at this place, taxes and respect for life do not seem to go together. Now we feel like Jesus, caught in a tricky tax situation. New rules signed in the State of Illinois cover abortions with taxpayer’s money. Jesus was challenged with a catchy ques-tion. Do we have any brilliant answer to the catch of our circumstances?

May God bless you,

Fr. Andrew

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement

We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Mass Requests/Memorial Requests Important

While we try our best to honor all Mass Intentions, all Mass requests must be completed at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance due to various printing deadlines. Currently we do not have any weekday or weekend masses available until the weekend of November 18th and after due to the num-ber of filled requests. Suggested donations per Mass are $10. Please note that the Sanctuary Lamp and Bread & Wine requests fill-up quickly and we have a limited number of dates available. Please con-tact the rectory for availability. Sanctuary Lamp requests for 2017 are filled. There are a number of requests available for 2018. We do have a number of weeks open for Bread and Wine requests for 2017. The cost is $50 for the Bread and Wine. All Mass or remembrance requests can be made in person at the recto-ry or by completing the Mass request envelope that can be found in the Narthex. Please contact the Rectory for availability. Please insert your payment in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket or the mail slot at the Rectory. While we try to accommodate different situations, especially with our homebound parishioners, we cannot honor mass intentions over the phone.

Today is World Mission Sunday, a day that leads us to the heart of our Christian faith! Your generosity on World Mission Sunday supports the work of priests, religious, and lay leaders in the mission dioceses who accompany those most in need. Let this celebration of World Mission also be a day to honor the many ways we commit to missionary disci-pleship. As Psalm 104 says: “Send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth!” Please be generous!

The Shrine of Christ’s Passion Pilgrimage Trip At 8:15 a.m. last Saturday morning, 46 pilgrims boarded a chartered bus and left the friendly confines of Our Lady Mother of the Church south parking lot. The group was headed east for a tour of The Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John, Indiana. Thunder and lightning had pelted the vicinity the previous night and heavy rain continued to pour down. How would this effect the day, since the tour of the Shrine is completely outside? It appeared un-likely that there was any chance of the weather clearing up. Father Andrew did what he al-ways does in times of distress…he began telling jokes! Then, one of Ms. Shuttleworth’s re-ligious education students led the passengers of the packed bus in the Rosary. .. All I can say is…by the time we arrived at the beautiful St. John the Evangelist Church for Mass, the rain had lessened significantly. After Mass, we were scheduled to take the tour. At this point, the rain had stopped completely and the sun was even peeking out behind the clouds! The trail begins with an opportunity to sit down with Jesus at the Last Supper and then… look into His eyes at the Garden at Gethsemane. The excellent tour guides invited us to “take up our own crosses” as we viewed 40 life-like bronze statues depicting scenes from the Way of the Cross. It was moving to watch the religious education students place their fin-gers inside Jesus’ wounds and feel the nails placed in his hands, feet and side. After a delightful lunch from a local family-run restaurant…it began to rain again! Some-how, we didn’t mind taking shelter in the huge gift shop until time to board our bus! It contin-ued to rain until we arrived back at Our Lady…no one seemed to care.
