Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Weekend of September 7/8 2013

At the conclusion of today’s gospel, we hear Jesus tell a “great

crowd” that “…anyone of you who does not renounce all his

possessions cannot be my disciple.” A few of Jesus’ immediate

disciples, such as Peter, John and James, did just that: They

responded to Jesus’ call, renouncing everything to follow him. How

do modern disciples of Jesus respond when confronted with this

apparently harsh command of Jesus? Surely the renunciation of

possessions need not mean literally giving all one’s possessions

away, does it? Questions we might ponder this week though: Do

our possessions keep us from encountering Christ at Mass? Do

they distract us from our parish family? Do our possessions

interfere with our relationships? Do they make us insensitive to

those less fortunate?

Connected in the Spirit

Connected in the Spirit The Core Team met on August 21 with the Core Teams from St. Anthony and Holy Trinity for the fifth meeting of the Cohort Core Team. The discussion centered on

which model (Linked, Merged, Partnership) to adopt for our Cohort in our suggestion to the Archdiocesan Planning Commission. We developed the rationale for our recommendation to demonstrate how the model we propose will meet the goals of the Connected in the Spirit initiative. The Cohort Core Team will be sharing this recommendation with the staff and Pastoral Councils of the three parishes in our Cohort in the coming week. The Cohort Core Team will meet on Sept. 11 to finalize the suggestion for submission to the Archdiocesan Planning Commission. The Archdiocesan Planning Commission will then prepare a preliminary recommendation and rationale to the Cohort in October. After that recommendation is received, the parishes will convene meetings to share this information and request input from the parishioners on the plans. This process will assist the Cohort Core Team in preparing its response to the Archdiocesan Planning Commission. In January, the Archbishop will announce his decisions regarding parish ministry and restructuring after prayer, reflection, and consultation with the Presbyteral Council and other bodies. Please continue to pray for the success of the Connected in the Spirit process that the Holy Spirit will guide the Cohort Core Team as they look for ways to suggest good

stewardship practices for our parish and our cohort partners.

PLAN AHEAD!! - The next ‘CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH’ Women’s Retreat weekend will be October 5-6, 2013. Mark your calendar! Brochure registration forms are located

in the racks in Emmaus Way as well as on our parish WEB site.

Music Sometimes, after mass a hymn that was sung will come to mind during the week. I hear the words in

my mind and find myself humming the tune. Such as: "Only this I want: but to know the Lord, and to bear his cross so to wear the crown he wore." Sometimes, the words will bring tears and I find I need to be still and bend the knee in prayer. Sometimes, the words are joyful and bring a smile to my lips. I thank God for the grace of speaking through music.

Youth Ministry

Why should I go to NCYC? NCYC is a great opportunity for you to meet other Catholic youth from around the United States while at the same time entering into a deeper relationship with Christ and His Church. It is an experience unlike almost any other event because you will be surrounded by 25,000 other Catholic youth who want to become more engaged in their faith and Church. NCYC attracts some of the most well known Catholic speakers, so the presentations are always top of the line and engaging. Don't take our word for it though, here are some quotes from previous NCYC participants: "NCYC has forever changed my outlook on my religion and faith. The speakers went through many struggles in their lives but they all still believe in God because he was with them all the way. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life." "NCYC is something every single Catholic youth should be involved in; 23,000 Catholic youth, what a great experience. I'm going to the next one." "The closing Liturgy was phenomenal. It was great seeing over 100 bishops, priests, and deacons con-celebrating together."
