Thank you for your ministry in serving our parish family!
We extend our sympathy to parishioners Gary & Cheri Shebesta
on the recent death of
Gary’s nephew, Jeff.
God our Father, creator of heaven and earth,
we thank you for gathering us as brothers and sisters
in this place. Before this rock, split by human labor,
we pray to you for workers everywhere.
We pray for those who work with their hands
and with immense physical effort:
Soothe their wearied frames,
that they may tenderly caress their children
and join in their games.
Grant them unfailing spiritual strength and
physical health, lest they succumb beneath
the burden of their labors.
Grant that the fruits of their work
may ensure a dignified life to their families.
May they come home at night to warmth, comfort
and encouragement and together, under your gaze,
find true joy.
May our families know that the joy of earning our
daily bread becomes perfect when that bread is shared. May our children not be forced to work,
but receive schooling and continue their studies,
and may their teachers devote themselves fully to
their task, without needing other work to make a
decent living.
God of justice, touch the hearts of owners and
managers. May they make every effort
to ensure that workers receive a just wage
and enjoy conditions respectful of their human dignity.
A Prayer for Workers In September of 2019 in a stone quarry in Madagascar, Pope Francis offered this prayer for workers. On this Labor Day weekend, as we join Pope Francis in this prayer, let us also give thanks to God for the work and workers that have benefitted us, and let us consider how we can make life better for the workers who we encounter.
Father, in your mercy, take pity on those who lack
work. May unemployment — the cause of such
great misery — disappear from our societies.
May all know the joy and dignity of earning their
daily bread, and bringing it home to support
their loved ones.
Create among workers a spirit of authentic solidarity.
May they learn to be attentive to one another,
to encourage one another, to support those in
difficulty and to lift up those who have fallen.
Let their hearts not yield to hatred, resentment
or bitterness in the face of injustice.
May they keep alive their hope for a better world, and
work to that end.
Together, may they constructively
defend their rights.
Grant that their voices and demands may be heard.
God our Father, you have made St. Joseph,
foster father of Jesus and courageous spouse of the
Virgin Mary, protector of workers throughout the
world. To him I entrust all those who labor here, at
Akamasoa, and all the workers of Madagascar,
especially those experiencing uncertainty and
hardship. May he keep them in the love of your Son
and sustain them in their livelihood and in their hope.
Amen.

MENASHA — You could say Halle Castonia was following in her mother’s footsteps when she walked down the aisle of St. John the Baptist Church July 18 to marry Michael Logemann. But it would be more accurate to say she was following in her grandmother’s footsteps.
And her great-grandmother’s footsteps.
And her great-great-grand-mother’s footsteps.
Nearly 94 years after Clara Dombrowski and John Heidl were wed at St. John the Bap-tist Church in 1926, Halle and Michael Logemann continued the family’s fi ve-generation tradition of exchanging vows at the Menasha church.
Halle told The Compass that keeping the family tradition alive was an honor — especial-ly because she has a bond with each of the other brides.
“It’s so special and it’s so rare,” she said. “I think, too, what’s even more special is the
fact that all fi ve of the genera-tions, I got to actually meet all of those women — all the way to my great-great-grandma Clara. I knew her up until I was 7 years old, which I also think is a very rare thing.”
Halle is a 2015 graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School in Neenah. She attended Mar-
ian University in Fond du Lac, where she earned an elemen-tary/middle education degree in December 2019. She is cur-rently teaching seventh grade religion at Xavier Middle School in Appleton.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The pandemic continues to cause deep wounds, exposing our vulnerability. On every con-tinent there are many who have died, many are ill. Many people and many families are living a time of uncertainty because of socio-economic problems which especially affect the poorest. Thus, we must keep our gaze fi rmly fi xed on Jesus (see Heb 12:2): in the midst of this pan-demic, our eyes on Jesus; and with this faith embrace the hope of the Kingdom of God that Jesus himself brings us (see Mk 1:5; Mt 4:17; CCC 2816).
A kingdom of healing and of salvation that is already present in our midst (see Lk 10:11). A kingdom of justice and of peace that is manifested through works of charity, which in their turn increase hope and strengthen faith (see 1 Cor 13:13). + Pope Francis, Aug. 5, 2020

LITTLE CHUTE — The COVID-19 pandemic put an early end to Isaac Vasquez’s classroom instruction at St. John Nepomucene Catholic School last spring. Even with virtual learning, the 10-year-old found he had free time on his hands.
With the help of his mother, Abby, Isaac began a craft project that continues to occupy
his time this summer and raise funds for needy causes.
“I had nothing to do and Mom wanted me to do something productive,” he said. “So I saw a video about a person who was doing art with nails and a board and I decided maybe to do it a different way.”
Isaac, the oldest of Manny and Abby Vasquez’s fi ve children, began making crosses made of wood, nails and twine.
“They are made out of deck wood, 9 inches long and 6 inches wide,” he told The Compass. “I use black chalk paint and I use nails that are 1 ½ inches long.” Isaac places a cross pattern over the painted board and hammers 36 nails in the shape of a cross on the board. He then wraps the twine around the nails to make a design.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Padre Pio
BY PATRICIA KASTEN | THE COMPASS
1 St. Pius of Pietrelcina (“Padre Pio”), known to have had gifts of healing, is
honored on Sept. 23.
2 This Capuchin priest, who died on Sept. 23, 1968, bore the stigmata:
the fi ve wounds of Christ. Pictures of him show bandages on his hands.
3 Padre Pio called prayer “a key that opens the heart of God.”
4 He founded a “House for the Relief of Suffering” in San Giovanni Rotundo,
Italy, in 1956. Today, it is a clinical and research hospital.
5 Padre Pio also had the “gift of reading souls,” seeing the intentions of a
person’s heart. He was canonized on June 16, 2002.
5 Gratitude for our health care heroesDear friends and followers of Jesus:
E very generation of young people seems to have to go through some trial — world wars, economic depressions, social
and cultural revolutions. These experiences become formative for the people who live through them, shaping their outlook on themselves and on the world. This will certainly be true for this generation of young adults and their fami-lies as their lives will forever be shaped by their experi-ence with this pandemic.
Very few people living today have seen such a trial as a pandemic, but it is having devastating effects on individuals, on families
and on our nation. While so many people have been affected in so many ways, the health care professionals — doctors, nurses, and staffs in hospitals, clinics, and nursing and assisted living homes — have truly been on the front lines in this pandemic. That’s why we decided to do a special section dedicated to health care workers in gratitude to them.
I remember my visit to the hospitals and nurs-ing homes last April. I could not go into the fa-cilities but was able to take the Blessed Sacra-ment to bless them, both Catholic facilities and other public or private facilities. This was a real
blessing to me and hopefully to those whom we blessed. People stood at the windows, and staff and patients waved as we departed from them. I will never forget that day.
Some of our priests and deacons and parish staff processed through their parish neighbor-hoods and blessed parishioners in their homes. Some of our younger priests received special training to visit parishioners near death with full PPE gear in order to grant them the apos-tolic pardon and the last rites.
However, we know that none of this compares to the heroism of our health care workers. So many have worked longer hours, put themselves at risk of contracting CO-VID-19, and sacrifi ced time with their families and loved ones. They did this out of a genuine care and love for their patients, and in doing so, they witnessed to the love that Jesus has for each of us. As it says in the Gospel of John, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn 15: 13). The self-less love shown by our health care workers is truly heroic and inspiring. Please pray in great gratitude for them.
In addition to praying for them, we can also do our part to make their lives easier. Specifi -cally, we can follow the guidelines to slow and stop the spread of this disease. This includes washing our hands frequently, maintaining distance from people, wearing masks when required and staying home when we are sick.
The entire column appears in our Aug. 14 issue.
BISHOP’SCORNER Bishop DavidRicken
Staff members at St. John the Baptist Parish in Howard recently created road signs to post near the church that spread posi-tive messages to the community. “The words of our Lord and the saints can do far more to touch hearts and lift spirits than we can,” said Lisa Christiansen, coordinator of faith formation, grades 6-12.
