OCTOBER— Month of the Holy Rosary The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. "If we consider the power of the Rosary as seen in its effects, we find a great abundance of proofs of its wonderful value. Many are the favors granted to private individuals through its devout recitation. "Today, when dangers threaten not only Christianity but all civilization, we are urged by our Blessed Mother to turn again to the Rosary for help. In this month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great myster‐ies of our salvation.
Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our respon‐sibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find our‐selves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.

TO SR. ANNA STRYCHARZ ON HER 25th ANNIVERSARY OF
RELIGIOUS PROFESSION
Sr. Anna came to St. Ferdinanda parish in 2008. Currently she is the Director of
Religious Education for St. Ferdinand Parish as well as St. Ferdinand Polish School. Sister coordinates all the sacramental programs for both the Polish and English communities, and the RCIA program at St. Ferdinand. Sister has authored a bilingual (Polish & English) text for confirmation preparation. Sr. Anna teaches Religion at Notre Dame High School for Girls. Sr. Anna leads a parish bible group and lends her voice in praise in supervision of her Polish children’s choir, Kropeczki. She works with the Office for Catechesis Come Home campaign, Polish Catechist Certification program, and the adult Confirmation program for Vicariate IV. On her day off, she makes monthly visits to jail are a symbol for our vicariate of the true meaning of corporeal works of mercy, not just the ones that are easier to do. St. Anna is also the superior for the convent and is currently in her second year of her doctorate of ministry program at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. We thank the Lord for His Blessings that made you so committed to the vocation. May you continue to be a source of inspiration to all who interact with you. Our prayers are for you to continue in our Lord's service for many more years to come. Thank you for your dedicated service here, at St. Ferdinand parish. May God bless you always!

His Excellency, Archbishop Zygmunt Zi‐mowski, President of the Pontifical Coun‐cil for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers, one of the closest associates of blessed Pope John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, will be visiting Chicago this October.

On Sunday, October 13 his Excellency will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of his Priesthood Ordi‐nation. WORLD MISSION CELEBRATION Tuesday, October 8, at Archbishop Quigley Center in Chicago Chicago, IL (September 11, 2013) – The World Mission Celebration to benefit the Mater Ecclesiae College for
Sisters from Mission countries, will be held October 8, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Archbishop Quigley Center, 835 North Rush Street in Chicago. Sr. Madge Karecki, SSJ‐TOSF, the Office of Mission Education for the New Evangelization, and the Society for the Propagation of Faith are hosting this celebration. Special guests include Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, Kate Sullivan, CBS 2 Chicago News Anchor, and Sr. Teibe Hadghu, a Comboni Missionary sister. The evening will include insights on Mater Ecclesiae College and the work of missionary sisters. The College, founded in 1979, is located in Castel Gandolfo, near the summer Papal residence outside Rome. Mater Ecclesiae College provides studies in theology and religious formation for 140 Sisters from 40 mission countries, who also receive rigorous training in human development, finance, economics and business. FAITH AND ACTION ON THE JOURNEY PILGRIMAGE As continuation of the 40 Days of Prayer, Fasting and Action Until the Vote there will be a Pilgrimage on October 19th from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. We will be starting with a prayer service at Holy Name Cathedral ‐ the mother church of the Archdiocese ‐ walk through Federal Plaza and end at Old St. Mary's ‐ the oldest parish in the Archdiocese ‐ symbolizing our Church's own story of immigration. In late June, the United States Senate, through a bi‐partisan collaboration, passed their version of a comprehensive immigration bill. Speaking on behalf of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles reaffirmed that this was commendable, but that there is still work to do. Understanding the role of migration in our faith tradition, and seeing the implications that migration has for living a dignified life, the Church has stood on the side of the immigrant community during the journey for comprehensive immigration reform. JUBILEUSZ 25 LECIA PROFESJI ZAKONNEJ SR. ANNY STRYCHARZ W dniu dzisiejszym Sr. Anna Strycharz obchodzi Jubileusz 25 lecia Profesji Zakonnej. Dobremu Bogu dziękujemy za dar Jej powołania i za umacnianie Jej swą łaską przez ostatnie 25 lat. Sr. Anna urodziła sie w Dęblinie, mieście słynnym ze Szkoły Lotniczej. W 1987 roku po zdaniu matury wstąpiła do Zgromadzenia Sióstr Misjonarek Chrystusa Króla dla Polonii Zagranicznej. W roku 1990 złożyła Pierwszą Profesję Zakonną po czym pracowała m.in. we Władysławowie i na Białorusi. W tym czasie ukończyła Studium Katechetyczne
i katechizowała w szkołach podstawowych. W 1995 złożyła Profesję Wieczystą i została skierowana do pracy w Szczecinie. W tym czasie ukończyła także na Wydziale Teologicznym Studia nad Rodziną. Przez kolejne 4 lata pracowała w Goleniowie w Gimnazjum i zajmowała się również pracą z dziećmi i młodzieżą w różnych grupach parafialnych. Przez 3 lata prowadziła także zajęcia katechetyczne na Kolegium katechetycznym w Szczecinie. W 2003 roku wyjechała do Anglii na naukę j. angielskiego po czym została skierowana do pracy wśród Polonii Kanadyjskiej w Brampton, On, gdzie przez 3 lata pełniła funkcję zakrystianki i zajmowała się posługą wśród dzieci i młodzieży oraz katechetów. W roku 2007 przybyła do Stanów Zjednoczonych na „Trójcowo” gdzie pracowała jako sekretarka i katechetka oraz zajmowała się młodzieżą i katechetami. Od sierpnia 2008 pracuje w naszej parafii pełniąc funkcję Dyrektorka programu nauczania Religii w trzech szkołach: angielskiej, polskiej i Notre Dame High School . Obecnie jest przełożoną domu, prowadzi zespół „Kropeczki” i czynnie uczestniczy w życiu parafii i Archididiecezji, odwiedzając więzienia imigracyjne, pomagając podczas zbiórek żywności i wyjeżdżając z misją pomocy najbiedniejszym.
Sr. Annie z okazji tego pięknego Jubileuszu składamy serdeczne życzenia: Bożego błogosławieństwa, wielu łask Bożych i radości z obranej drogi. Dziękując za posługę w naszej parafii życzymy mocy i wytrwałości w dalszej służbie Bogu i Kościołowi i zdobywania szczytów
świętości oraz owocnego posługiwania tam, gdzie Opatrzność Boża Ją skieruje. Z modlitwą wdzięczni parafianie, kapłani, siostry zakonne oraz pracownicy szkoły i parafii.

Koła Różańcowe przy Parafii Św. Ferdynanda Odmawiajcie Różaniec ‐ ile to już razy słyszał świat to wezwanie Maryi? W różnych zakątkach ziemi, w różnych sytuacjach, świat otrzymuje od Matki Bożej wciąż to samo przesłanie: "Odmawiajcie Różaniec!" Jest to w pewien sposób testament naszej Matki i Królowej ‐ Maryi. Różaniec jest modlitwą uciszenia naszego życia codziennego, pełnego rytmu pracy, zagonienia a często także cierpienia. Październik jest miesiącem modlitwy różańcowej w całym Kościele. 18 lat temu, dokładnie 1 października, 30 osób w naszej parafii za podpowiedzią ks. dr Jerzego Bieleckiego ‐ zapoczątkowało, nieustanne, modlitewne czuwanie z Różańcem w rękach. I tak 18 lat temu w naszej parafii powstały Koła Żywego Różańca. Codziennie 120 osób modli się jako "Żywy Różaniec" w intencji wspólnoty parafialnej, całego Kościoła i intencjach Papieskich. "Żywy Różaniec" służy pomocą Księdzu proboszczowi w działaniach duszpasterskich. Koła różańcowe uczestniczą w życiu liturgicznym Kościoła parafialnego poprzez posługę modlitwy różańcowej podczas świąt i uroczystości maryjnych oraz kościelnych, poprzez comiesięczne pierwszo‐sobotnie czuwania maryjne i sobotni różaniec przed polską Mszą św. Z myślą o coraz większym zawierzeniu Matce Najświętszej organizują pielgrzymki do maryjnych sanktuariów: Maryville w stanie Indiana, La Salette i Holy Hill w stanie Wisconsin oraz Amerykańskiej Częstochowy w stanie Pensylwania. Ponadto w miarę możliwości wspomagamy różne placówki duszpasterskie oraz misyjne w Polsce i na innych kontynentach. “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. Rich is better.” The quote is attributed to both Sophie Tucker and Mae West, to name two. There are probably others, but who really knows? Or cares? And in keeping with the theme, I’ll admit that I never read Irwin Shaw’s Rich Man, Poor Man. Nor did I ever watch an episode of the mini‐series, perhaps because I’ve never been rich and I’ve never been poor. Poor to the extent, anyway, of not knowing when my next meal would be, or poor to the extent of not having money to pay the bills. Rich man, poor man? I don’t mentally claim allegiance to either camp, but today’s readings remind me where my spiritual allegiance belongs… I’ve long held that the “Our Father” is the scariest prayer going because each time we pray it, we ask God to forgive our shortcom‐ings/ failures/ sins as we forgive others who commit shortcomings/ failures/ sins against us. Think about that. Each time we pray the prayer Jesus himself taught us to pray, we are petitioning God to treat us just like we treat those who have wronged us. That’s great if we’re the forgiving sort, but it’s the opposite of great if we’re not. And though I’ve read or heard today’s Gospel‐‐the parable of Lazarus and the rich man‐‐many times, it’s never struck me until just now that this account‐‐scary in and of itself‐‐is connected to the Lord’s Prayer in a significant way. “Give us this day our daily bread,” we pray. It’s Lazarus’ prayer as well. Lazarus, lying at the rich man’s door. Lazarus, eager to eat the scraps that fall from the rich man’s table. Because we’re called to
be Christ to one another, the presence of those who hunger, as the Catechism points out, puts a different perspective on this request: “The drama of hunger in the world calls Christians who pray sin‐cerely to exercise responsibility toward their brethren, both in their personal behavior and in their solidarity with the human fam‐ily. This petition of the Lord’s Prayer cannot be isolated from the parables of the poor man Lazarus and of the Last Judgment” (Lord, when did we see you hungry?). Which is the rich man’s problem. OK. The reading doesn’t exactly say that the man who dressed in purple linens and who dined sumptuously each day knew a poor beggar was at his door, but I think it’s safe to make that assumption, given that he ends up in the netherworld due to his inaction toward Lazarus. And even if he did not know of Lazarus, perhaps he should have known. At least that’s how I read the parable in relationship to the first reading from Amos: “Thus says the Lord the God of hosts: Woe to the com‐placent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall…” The rich man isn’t damned because he had a good life. He is damned because he disregards another in need. In his per‐sonal life and in solidarity with the human family, the rich man‐‐consumed by his own consumption‐‐just doesn’t pay attention. A bad thing, complacency. “Give us this day, our daily bread” is only half of the Lazarus conversation. “Lord, when did we see you hungry?” is the other.

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
