A little liturgical shop-talk: among those who take a deeper interest in the Liturgical rites (and principally among lay enthusiasts), there seems to be no shortage of dislike for the "kiss of peace", "sign of peace", "rite of peace" -- it goes by many names. The source of the angst has generally to do with the fact that it takes place almost immediately before Communion, while the consecrated bread and wine rest on the altar. Additionally, it may strike many well-meaning folks as a kind of social moment even in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord. Understandably, concerns over reverence and propriety are redoubled because of recent surveys which show a truly disturbing lack of knowledge and faith about the nature of Communion and Eucharist. The rite of peace has been part of the Liturgy since very early and has been in its current position since the end of the sixth century, the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great, according to Fr. Edward McNamara, a professor of Liturgy at the Regina Apostolorum University. On more than one occasion, proposals have arisen to consider relocating the rite within the Mass (though removing it altogether is never seriously considered). It is considered vital enough a component of the Liturgy that it had been reserved to the clergy only, for a time. However, it is now given in the Roman Missal (the document that dictates the form of the Mass) to the people, as it had been. Let us not reduce this sign to merely the level of a "greeting," however. The "peace" we share with those nearest us in the pews is not simply well-wishing, some principally social exercise. That would indeed be a breach of the kind of reverence we ought to observe with our Savior so near at hand -- literally, near at hand. Instead we turn and, giving a sign of respect and charity considered culturally appropriate, extend the peace of Christ himself to our brothers and sisters in the family of God, giving expression to our unity in Christ and our love for one another as members of the Body of Christ. The unfortunate misunderstanding is that the Sign of Peace is some sort of meet and greetimmediately before Communion. We mustnt lose sight of the heavenly reality in which we participate at the Mass, though. The Church at worship is the mystical Body of Christ, thus were more than simply neighbors. It is so much easier for us to see the visible-physical world as the sum and total of our existence. However, the mysteries of love, loss, purpose, and that nagging, insatiable longing for meaning and definition to our own existence are far more compelling than simply feeding bodily needs and appetites. It is these mysteries in which we as Church share greater and deeper commonalities that compel us to gather in Christ, to make peace one with another, to extend the Lords peace -- not our own -- to those nearest to us. To set aside disagreement and argument, to reconcile and run together in pursuit of Christ is the invitation of the Sign of Peace. Make this understanding the basis of the peace you share with those closest to you at Mass, and we can expect to grow in many ways as a community. As that peace we share takes greater root in us, more and more of those in our lives who are deprived of peace within will ask us in various ways to share that peace with them. At that point, the only response is to share with them not only your peace, but that of the Good Shepherd. In the homily this week, Deacon Tim addresses the short exchange of peace that occurs just between the Doxology of the Lord's Prayer ("For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever") and the Agnus Dei and Fraction Rite. It is perhaps a badly misunderstood moment in the Liturgy which leads, to this day, to disagreement about whether or where it belongs in the Liturgy.

The unfortunate misunderstanding is that the Sign of Peace is some sort of “meet and greet” immediately before Communion. We mustn’t lose sight of the heavenly reality in which we participate at the Mass, though. The Church at worship is the mystical Body of Christ, thus we’re more than simply neighbors.

It is so much easier for us to see the visible-physical world as the sum and total of our existence. However, the mysteries of love, loss, purpose, and that nagging, insatiable longing for meaning and definition to our own existence are far more compelling than simply feeding bodily needs and appetites. It is these mysteries in which we as Church share greater and deeper commonalities that compel us to gather in Christ, to make peace one with another, to extend the Lord’s peace -- not our own -- to those nearest to us.

David Dunst Director of Music and Liturgy

FALL FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS

Our Fall Festival will be a two-day event this year starting on Saturday with Mass at 4 p.m., followed by our famous pork dinner, the silent auction, and entertainment by the Swing Cats. On Sunday, we will have one Mass at 10 a.m., the silent auction, concessions featuring Kramarczuk’s brats and fresh Wisconsin Cheese Curds in

honor of Father Steven, along with all sorts of other goodies, bingo with cash prizes, the country store, the Vikings Vs. Packers Quilt Super Bowl, corn hole tournament with cash prizes, inflatables, kid’s games, the dice game, a wine raffle and a $5,000 raffle. Music on Sunday will be the Maple Street Ramblers Dixieland Jazz Band.

Each year our festival gets bigger and better, with more people attending from our parish and community. There is a flyer in today’s bulletin regarding individual sponsorship to the fall festival. We would greatly appreciate any type of donation, whether it be items for the silent auction and the country store, pies for the pork dinner, prayers, or a monetary donation to help make this fall festival successful.

Thank you in advance from the Fall Festival Committee for helping to make this the most successful and fun Fall Festival yet! If you have any questions, please contact Gail Barta at 651-454-9552 or Anne O’Keefe at 651-905-4308 or email her at [email protected].

INDIVIDUAL SPONSORSHIP FOR THE FALL FESTIVAL

It takes many hands to make St. Peter’s Fall Festival the best it can be. We have a dedicated group of committee members who plan the event; then we need help from all of you to make it successful! Starting September 1, we will have a volunteer sign-up sheet in the Gathering Space. Please check it over and see if you are able to give of your time or talent for our annual festival. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new parishioners! If you have questions, please contact Gail Barta at 651-454-9552 or Anne O’Keefe at [email protected] at 651-905-4308.

Bean Bag Tournament. The entry fee is $10 per person and $20/Per team. This fee is due the day of tournament. Single players will be paired up the day of the tournament.

The latest registration is 11:30 a.m. on the day of the festival, with the tournament starting at noon. We will pay out to the top two teams with 50% of the entry fee, the other 50% goes to St. Peter’s.

Rules: We will play best of 3 games. It’s a race to 21 (you can go over), with cancellation rules. Bag in the hole is worth 3 points, bag on the board is 1 point, bags that bounce off the ground and land on the board is out of play. Example for cancellation: if you make a bag in the hole and your opponent makes a bag in the hole, then it cancels out. This is a single elimination tournament. If you lose the best of 3 games, you’re out of the tournament.

Bomb Box Challenge. Another chance to win some money at Bean Bags! Pay $5 to throw 8 bags. Whoever makes the most bags in the hole will take 50% of the total money paid. The other 50% will go back to St. Peter’s. The challenge starts at noon and ends with a winner at 2 p.m.

Please contact Gail Barta at 651-454-9552 or [email protected] or contact Anne O’Keefe at 651-905-4308 or [email protected] with any questions.

We would also love to hear from you if you are available to help at this event!

NEW THIS YEAR TO FESTIVAL

The 8th Cathedral Festival of Lights Gala, sponsored by the Cathedral Heritage Foundation, invites the community for a special evening of tours, music, a spotlight presentation, fine dining catered by the Saint Paul Hotel, and a live auction, all on Thursday, October 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cathedral, 239 Selby Avenue, in St. Paul. The event will be hosted by KSTP TV anchor/reporter, Tom Hauser. Proceeds from the event will help restore the historic cathedral sacristy. To learn more about this event, visit www.cathedralheritagefoundation.org.

This is a special night when we invite guests into the Cathedral after it has normally closed, for a one-of-a-kind event,” said Mary E. Schaffner, Cathedral Heritage Foundation Board Chair. “It’s an opportunity to connect with this historic landmark church. Once you hear the stories of the people who designed and built this beloved church and landmark, we know you will want to support our on-going restoration and preservation work.”

REGISTRATION BEGINS The Alpha Course will return to St. Peter’s, on September 24. Alpha is a place to develop or deepen a relationship with Jesus and explore the basics of the Christian faith. The course will run Tuesday evenings, September 24 through December 17, from 6:30 to

8:30 p.m. in Heritage Center.

Alpha consists of a meal, a talk and small group discussion. It is an open, informal and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together and is designed to create and/or deepen a personal relationship with Jesus. It is a place for fellowship with others.

One recent participant commented: “Alpha increased my confidence to share my faith!” Another said: “As a new parishioner, Alpha was helpful for me in meeting and developing relationships with others at St. Peter’s.”

Online registration is available on St. Peter’s website and after all Masses the weekend of September 7/8. Mark your calendars and plan to join us! Invite your friends and neighbors! Space is limited. If you have any questions, please contact Laurie Reding at 612-419-1709 or at [email protected].

Early Fall is a lovely time to relax in the supportive calm of a retreat center and hear the Lord's voice in your life. These women's mid-week retreats have a pace all their own. We hope you consider experiencing that pace for yourself at one of these two events.

Women's Mid-week Retreat opportunity: Tuesday—Thursday, October 1-3 Theme for both retreats; Rejoice and be Glad; Our Call to Holiness Today.

Four conference talks help you explore how holiness is not just for people on stain glass windows with halos around their heads! Holiness is still viable in our lives today.

Also there are opportunities for unhurried confession, meeting one on one with a spiritual director, reviewing your priorities, or just enjoying the retreat center's flowers and trails during this prime time of year. There's plenty of open time as well to restore your energy and outlook on life.

Please call 952-447-2182 to register or register online at www.franciscanretreats.net.

PASTORAL MINISTRY

FOLLOWING JESUS CHAPEL OF THE NATIVITY PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL

Closeness to Christ in silence and contemplation does not distance us from our contemporaries but, on the contrary, makes us attentive and open to human joy and distress and broadens our heart on a global scale. It unites us with our brothers and sisters in humanity and particularly with children, who are the Lord's dearly beloved."

~ St. John Paul II

We are in need of adorers in the Chapel of the Nativity. Please prayerfully consider committing to one of the hours listed here that is still empty. White spaces indicate where we have the most urgent need.

Could you not watch one hour with me? Matthew 26:40

Our gospel reading this weekend recounts the story of the prodigal son who squandered his inheritance. The Lord has given us all that we need in this life. Sometimes we forget, and we wander like the son in our gospel story. Our God is abounding in mercy and

always ready to welcome us home when we sin.

PRAYER OF THE HEART WORKSHOP “As our body cannot live without nourishment, so our soul cannot stay spiritually alive without prayer.”

~ St. Augustine

Since prayer is as necessary to our soul as nourishment and air is for the body, we are offering a series of three workshops to guide and support this essential practice of our Christian life. As we revisit certain helpful keys to prayer and cover practical tips on how to deal with distractions, dryness and other challenges, those who attend will also have the opportunity to grow in their understanding and experience of the fruitful practice of meditation and prayer of the heart.

This three-part workshop will be offered at two different sessions for your convenience. Choose whichever best fits your schedule. Plan to make time to enrich your personal prayer and grow deeper into your relationship with Jesus. Both sessions will be held in Heritage Center.

Evening session: Thursdays, October 17, 24, and November 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Having looked more deeply into the meaning of Covenant last week, we can now start to unpack the purpose, or goal of that economy.

The Old Testament contains in its entirety a covenant ordered to preparing a people for the arrival of Christ, the one who would affect the redemption of all people. The Old Covenant, as it is, was not even made with all, but with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, with Moses and the nation God brought out of slavery. While not the final

purpose of the Old Covenant, the salvation of men was present in hidden ways (CCC 122).

One might think of these salvation references in the Old Testament as “easter eggs”—hints and clues laid in one movie or book that refer to another story, or a sequel.

By comparison, the New Covenant is ordered not to the unveiling of the Messiah, but to the ultimate joy of drawing all of God’s creatures into the unity of the Blessed Trinity. This unity is not to be merely a future eventuality, though, and we are invited to live in this Covenant even now (CCC 260).

The Catechism also includes in paragraph 260 this prayer of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity:

O my God, Trinity whom I adore, help me forget myself entirely so to establish myself in you, unmovable and peaceful as if my soul were already in eternity. May nothing be able to trouble my peace or make me leave you, O my unchanging God, but may each minute bring me more deeply into your mystery! Grant my soul peace. Make it your heaven, your beloved dwelling and the place of your rest. May I never abandon you there, but may I be there, whole and entire, completely vigilant in my faith, entirely adoring, and wholly given over to your creative action.

PASTORAL MINISTRY

CATECHISM CORNER

Discipleship is a call to go inward, to experience an ever-deepening encounter with Jesus Christ, and a call to go outward, to witness the Good News to others. The Church is missionary by its very nature, bearing witness to the Kingdom of God and carrying on the mission of Jesus. Explore how the call to evangelization is at the heart of Scripture—in ancient Israel, the life of Jesus, and the apostolic church—and how disciples are called to be missionary witnesses of the gospel, living the gospel with joy and hope for the sake of the world.

WOMEN’S EVENING BIBLE STUDY

IN SINCERE SYMPATHY St. Peter’s Parish extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Joseph Martin McCarthy. We invite all to join us in praying that God may make him a sharer in eternal salvation.

YOUNG WOMEN’S BOOK GROUP Join us for the Young Women’s Book Group on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., September 16 to December 2 in the Family Room.

Young women are invited to gather each week to discuss the book, Blessed, Beautiful, and Bodacious, by Pat Gohn. Register by September 10, by emailing Lisa Hursin at [email protected].

About the book: Pat Gohn draws on decades of women’s ministry experience, her popular Catholic women’s podcast Among Women, and her own story as a wife and mother, proclaiming the Church’s compelling vision of every woman: you have dignity (blessed), you are gifted (beautiful), and you have a mission (bodacious).

The lively and unforgettable Gohn guides readers through moments of her life that have shaped her identity and understanding of womanhood—abiding love and talent for music, breast cancer in her thirties, and coming to understand true feminism in light of Church teaching and Mary’s example. More than a mere memoir, Blessed, Beautiful, and Bodacious: Celebrating the Gift of Catholic Womanhood offers readers insight into the writings of Blessed John Paul II, which articulate four gifts unique to every woman: generosity, receptivity, sensitivity, and maternity. With humor, faith, and the open-hearted tone of a trusted mentor, Gohn shares how she became empowered to embrace her blessings, beauty, and bodaciousness and how readers can do the same.
