state, and local involvement in noise abatement and control. They pointed out that the future of these programs is in turmoil at the present time due to economic cuts on the federal and state levels. However, the problems of noise pollution are still with us and thus the speakers talked specifically on how the state is helping local lev- eE with "Maximum Environmental Noise Levels," "Motor Vehicle Performance Standards," and "Watercraft Noise Performance Stand- ards" through such programs as ECHO (Each Community Helps Others).
Narragansett Chapter. Four meetings of the chapter were held during the year 1981. At the winter meeting held in Providence on 27 January, the guest speaker was Dr. Carleen Hutchins, who lec- tured about her celebrated research on stringed instruments. Several unique instruments were demonstrated and later made available for musicians in the audience to play. Honorary lifetime memberships were awarded to Dr. Hutchins (by Harry Miller) and to Dr. Robert Apfel (in absentia by Bob Beret). The spring meeting was held on 7 April at the University of Rhode Island. The speaker was A1 E1- linthorpe of the Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC), New London, who described his extensive work on underwater acoustic fluctuations carried out at the Azores fixed acoustic range (AFAR) over the past several years. A Certificate of Appreciation was pre-
/
sented to Wilson Lamb upon his retirement as chapter secretary. Musical entertainment was provided by a saxaphone quartet con- sisting of Mark Moffett, Jim Strickland, and two members of the Coast Guard band.
The summer meeting, jointly held with the Greater Boston Chap- ter, was held in Mystic, Connecticut on 30 May. The technical speaker was Robert Bruce of Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN), whose topic was "Occupational Noise Exposure in America." The history of noise control legislation as well as cost, benefits, and methods were described. A musical program was given by the "NUSC Offbeat Five" woodwind quintet headed by Fran Weigle.
The fall meeting was held at the Viking Hotel, Newport, Rhode Island on 26 September. The subject of the technical taik by Pro- fessor Robert E. Apfel of Yale University, was "Acousticai Levita- tion with Application to Medicine and Biology." The lecture was illustrated by slides showing how blood cells, etc. concentrate in different regions of the acoustic field, depending on their size and density. Bob aiso noted that the oil industry is interested in the method, and had recruited some of his graduate students. The an- nual awards meeting of the Narragansett Chapter was held at the Faculty Club, Brown University, 9 n the evening of 19 January 1982. The guest speaker was Dr. William Ellison of Cambridge Acousticai Associates, who discussed his work with the Arctic En- vironmental Noise Program to study the potential impact of oil drilling on Arctic marine life. His talk was illustrated by slides show- ing field work on the ice pack in which native Inupiaqs of Barrow, Alaska participated. An Honorary Lifetime Membership was pre- sented to Dr. Richard Bolt of Bolt Beranek and Newman by Lou Maples, who cited Dick's many contributions to acoustics over the years. A second award, voted to Warren P. Mason, will be pre- sented at a future meeting.
