Mark notes that Jesus 'looked steadily at him and loved him' so we know that Jesus is not playing games with him, trying to catch him out. But the Lord recognises that with his perspective on life the rich young man is not yet ready for the kingdom - that is why he goes away sad. It is a poignant story, so what is it that the young man lacks? The first reading offers a clue - how do we get to see things in the right way? It is by praying and entreating that one gets to understand, that one gets to wisdom. It is not something that can be achieved or bought through our own efforts. The letter to the Hebrews tells us that it is the word of God which is alive and active; that the initiative is always with God, human beings always await the gift which is salvation, the inheritance that we are offered is not ours through our own efforts or worth, but because of the supreme act of the one who sanctifies - as we heard last week - and who openly calls us his sisters and brothers. The Pope’s Prayer Intention - October:

Evangelization: The Mission of Religious. – That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves,

and be present among the poor, the marginalized, and those who have no voice.

BEGINNING OF PRISON’S WEEK, 14TH OCTOBER

It is a national day of prayer and action for prisoners and their dependants marked by the Catholic Church. It launches a week long ecumenical campaign of prayer for all those affected by imprisonment, a time to reflect on how we – as individuals, as a Church and as an ecumenical community – can serve those whose lives are entwined with the Criminal Justice System. Simply by marking Prisoners Sunday, we might encourage ourselves to become more involved with the work of PACT (the national Catholic agency that supplies support to prisoners, people with convictions, and their families through a range of family, court, helpline and prison and community-based services). Hopefully you will pray for this work and the people involved. You may wish to volunteer or fundraise. There are many things which we, as parishioners, could do to help. Copies of support materials for this are at the rear of the church. NOVEMBER DEAD LIST It is good to remember and pray for all the dead that they, like the canonized saints, might soon acquire their place in heaven. We remember them in our Mass Intentions and daily prayers but, throughout November, the Month of the Holy Souls, we remember them most especially. At the back of Church you will find envelopes and blank from which you are invited to take away, complete, return and place in the box provided that will be placed in front of the altar throughout November. Those named on the forms will be remembered in prayer each day, at all masses and other services throughout the month. A Book of Remembrance for all those interred within the parish since its inception will also be displayed. Should you wish to make an offering, it can be placed in the envelope. CATHOLICS IN TIDESWELL There is a good record in Tideswell of Churches Together Study Groups. During Lent and Advent are the obvious times. But these days a weekly 'Studying the Scriptures' group from all the Churches meets. The Letter to the Hebrews is currently being covered. Coming from different Christian backgrounds those who take part all have lots of interesting viewpoints. This can be quite stimulating! Cardinal Vincent Nichols recently wrote "true dialogue takes place between those well grounded in their own religious faith and who have moved beyond a well-intentioned, but mistaken, desire to avoid disagreement". (further details from Bill on [email protected]). BAPTISM OF OLIVIA ROSE MELIA – SUNDAY 14TH

OCTOBER 1.00PM Today, we welcome Olivia Rose Melia to the Communion of Saints. During the baptismal service, she will be anointed prophet, priest and king; and, as we remind ourselves of our own baptisms, we prayer for her family and friends that we might all live up to the baptismal promises to God made by us or on our behalf. CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH CHURCH OPENING: The Church will be open every day from 0900-1700hrs.

THE SAINTS IN HEAVEN You may be aware that the Holy Father will, this Sunday (14th October), canonise our late Holy Father, Pope Paul VI and Blessed Archbishop Oscar Romero alongside five others: Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio, who died at 19 years of age; Blessed Francesco Spinelli, an Italian diocesan priest and Founder of the Institute of the Sister Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament; Blessed Vincenzo Romano, an Italian diocesan priest; Blessed Maria Caterina Kasper, German foundress of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and Blessed Nazaria Ignazia March Mesa (in religion: Nazaria Ignazia di Santa Teresa di Gesu), Spanish foundress of the Congregation of the Misioneras Cruzadas de la Inglesia Sisters. At our baptism, each one of us is made a saint: today, the Pope recognizes a number of saints who have lived their baptismal vocation Pope Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria on the 26th September 1897 and reigned as Pope from 21 June 1963 to his death in 1978. Succeeding John XXIII, he continued the Second Vatican Council which he closed in 1965, implementing its numerous reforms and fostered improved ecumenical relations with Eastern Orthodox and Protestants, which resulted in many historic meetings and agreements. He named Mary as the Mother of the Church during the Second Vatican Council and described himself as a humble servant for a suffering humanity and demanded significant changes from the rich in North America and Europe in favour of the poor in the Third World. His positions on birth control, promulgated famously in the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae were often contested, especially in Western Europe and North America. The same opposition emerged in reaction to the political aspects of some of his teaching. He persevered: guided by love of God and logic. Oscar Romero was Archbishop of San Salvador but lived a very simple life. He was assassinated on Monday March 24th 1980 as he was celebrating Mass in the chapel of the Divine Providence cancer hospital where he lived. He was a popular preacher who responded with real compassion to the plight of the poor. At his death, he fell at the foot of a huge crucifix. He died a Eucharistic martyr, a martyr to the option for the poor, a martyr to the Magisterium of the Church. We have much to learn about ourselves from the lives of all the canonized saints.
