This issue spans 2013 and 2014. The year-end is a good time to look back, and look ahead. What’s thestatus of some of the trends we’ve covered this past year? Certainly OTT/delivery to multiple receiverscontinued to dominate the scene in 2013, and will only continue to grab headlines next year. 3Dcontinued to recede in 2013, while UltraHD garnered tentative interest.

In our next issue we’ll be running some short and long form commentary on what TV technologypeople should prepare for as we move forward. If you have an opinion----even just a few sentences----onwhat 2014 may have in store for us, shoot me a mail. We’d love to hear your opinion on using the cloud inbroadcast applications, OTT, UltraHD, channel-in-a-box, implementing social media, or whatever trendyou see coming. We’ll run a few of these in our Feb/March issue. Also, what might you like to seeaddressed in our pages next year?

One big focus for TV Technology Europe and sister publication TV Technology Asia/Pacific will be sport.2014 is another of those ‘years of sport,’ with Olympics and a World Cup and more at the fore. I willactually be attending the Sochi Games in February, reporting back on the technologies the hostbroadcaster and rightsholders are using to make the home viewing experience often better than seeing anevent live. Please let me know if I can stop by your rooms in the IBC if you will be there and can spare afew minutes to let me tell your story.

TV Technology is not alone in its sport focus for next year. The organization that puts on the very goodBroadcast Asia show in Singapore every June just put out a release saying that the 2014 version of theevent will have a strong emphasis on sport. Good idea.Mark Hallinger, Editor

E A/S (formerly known as Syd EnergiA/S) is Denmark’s third largestenergy and utility company, co-

operatively owned bits customersand with an impressive commitment toenvironmentally responsible operations. Butit’s also a provider of entertainment andtelephony via a major partnership role inDenmark’s WAOO! project. WAOO! is acollaboration between thirteen independentfibre optic networks designed to facilitatehigh quality IPTV and VOD services tosubscribers. It negotiates distribution rights,

runs the IPTV middleware, hosts and deliverscontent, and markets the video servicesnationally.

With the headend, transit, and encryptionstages of the delivery chain operated byother WAOO! partners, the BridgeTechnologies (Bridge) monitoring systemdeployed by SE is critical in ensuring that allservices meet quality standards at thehandover point. To achieve this, SE uses acombination of Bridge Technologies VB120,VB220, and VB330 probes throughout thechain to provide instant diagnosis andanalysis of any errors in the stream.

The installed base of WAOO! users hasgrown rapidly. In order to gain betteroperating economies that can be passed onto the subscriber, SE recently purchasedStofa, the country’s second-largest TVdistribution network, adding a 400 percentincrease in customer numbers.

Stofa also uses Bridge Technologiesmonitoring equipment but reaches itssubscribers mainly via cable, while SE’scustomers are mainly served through IP-over-fibre. This means there’s acomplementary base of expertise betweenthe two companies: because we both useBridge systems, there’s good potential forsharing knowledge and new ways to use thetechnology.

In addition to its IPTV and VOD services, SEoperates cable services from nine headends,delivering 66 DVB-C channels, 43 analoguechannels, and 36 FM channels. Cablemonitoring capability is provided by SE’smonitoring installations at 28 sites, where acombination of VB120, VB220, and VB262units are used. Combined with portableVB12-RF units for in-field diagnosis, theseunits provide rapid and exact isolation ofproblems that may arise due to faulty wiring,or unshielded connectors in olderinstallations at customer premises.

While SE is mainly focused on IP/fibre, weare nevertheless rolling out cableinfrastructure at a rapid rate. It’s a steeplearning curve with technology we are not sofamiliar with, unlike the fibre and IP worldwhere we are much more comfortable.

So it’s important, especially in the early

stages as we build the infrastructure, tocreate a comprehensive monitoringstructure.

Meanwhile, the Stofa people have plentyof expertise with cable, but are out of theircomfort zone with fibre and IP.

This is when having a top qualitymonitoring system really helps. While our IPand fibre network is rock solid, rolling outnew cable infrastructure is a different thing.We can’t be everywhere all the time, so weneed ‘eyes’ out in the network – and this iswhat the Bridge system provides. I need at

all times to be able to access and interactwith the system to interrogate any point inthe network, and to keep a comprehensiveoverview. IP is very straightforward becauseyou can trace where the signal is comingfrom by interrogating the routers, looking atrouting tables, and so on. But with cable it’s

different because when you send out thesignals, it’s a one-way street. Most errors inthe cable network are caused by equipmentfailures. Cable technology is stable andmature, but when you are rolling out massiveamounts of hardware, hardware faults dooccur in the headend.

The Bridge systems allow us to pinpointfaults quickly. This is vital for our growth: ifyou have a hardware fault in the networkand it takes you five days to find it, thecustomer will suffer for that period.

Tolerances are important, and a small variation can cause an error. You mighthave an output of a certain db level into thefibre and when it falls 0.5 of a db thecustomer may experience ghosting,pixelation, or a snowy picture. If we can’tmeasure these tolerances ourselves and gettimely warnings, then the only way ofdetecting errors is to wait for customers to call and complain – and we don’t want that.

Investing in monitoring infrastructure is afinely calculated thing. You must weighcosts and benefits. When we create acomprehensive monitoring system it enables us to detect faults very quickly.

This means we put less stress on thecustomer service, we have fewer dissatisfiedcustomers and fewer truck rolls. The benefitin the long term is very positive growth forour |business. ///

Additionally, from time to timeI get to work on commercials/shorts as a camera assistant. Ialso often edit online videos for/and hang out in the office of thefunniest comedians in Denmark:Wulffmorgenthaler. In my sparetime, I'm constantly looking fornew projects and shooting avariety of videos.

HAVE YOU BEEN BUSY?Oh yeah, and who isn’t in thisindustry? I’m “aiming to get” mydream projects and I'mconstantly practicing andimproving my skills! This summerwas insane, I worked on twofeature movies as a 2AC, oneafter another----“Petit”, with KimBasinger in Denmark/Germany,and Freistatt in Germany. (And) I

was working on fewcommercials in Europe.

Anyways, despite working 12hours a day in variousconditions, I love what I do. Everyday on a film set is full ofchallenges and experiences;meeting new people, travelingthe world, seeing new places…and when the movie is finished,the feeling it priceless.

WHAT TYPES OF PRODUCTIONSHAVE YOU MOSTLY SHOT?Reportages (extreme sports andlifestyle), commercials, shorts,music videos, documentaries.

WHICH DO YOU PREFER?At the moment, documentaries,which involve just a few people,since on those I am mostlyworking as a cinematographer.There is nothing more preciousthan experiencing someone'slife, and trying to see the worldthrough their eyes for the timeof filming the movie.Nevertheless, I also love the filmset lifestyle, and working oninternational featureproductions.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRSTSHOOTING JOB?In the very beginning, I startedto make movies aboutsomething that I was passionateabout. In my case: extreme

sports! When I was 17, I got afilm job on a Swiss glacier. I wasfilming short extreme sportsvideos, for a ski and snowboardcamp for teens.

MOST RECENT, INTERESTINGASSIGNMENTS?Most of them are special andinteresting, e.g. cooperatingwith 16 filmmakers to createone music video for a Norwegianband, filming carnivals andevents in my city, or filming achapter for a DanishDocumentary called “Farmer andThe Universe.” I am trying tocapture the ideology of thewhole universe in the microelements, fauna and flora,people, on an ecological farm in

your thoughts, words, and deedsand hours of waiting, but is avery meditative and open-minding challenge for acinematographer, especiallywhen it comes to pulling focuson macro lenses!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EARLYFILM WORK, AT THE AGE OF 13!A very long, long time ago -- OK,actually a decade ago -- Idiscovered the world of camerasand cartoons. I was moving to anew city almost every year as achild/teen, but I was luckyenough to always get a simpledigital photo camera and verybasic editing programs aroundme, so I started to create stop-motion videos. I was writingshort stories or creatingparodies of popular fairy-tails,but you know, these vids werereally amateurish! I was justplaying around with a camera inmy room.

My very first actors were Legobricks and toys, which I wassculpturing in modelling clay!Nevertheless, my interests andfascination in film and camerasstarted to grow and, when I wasabout 15, I firmly decided that Iwould dedicate my life to filmproduction and story-telling.

CURRENT EQUIPMENT YOU USE?Sony NEX FS700, Canon C300,Canon DSLRs, and when I work as

an AC, I am mostly surrounded byArri Alexa or RED Epic.

OTHER GEAR YOU HAVEACCESS TO?Sony PMW-F3, Sony FS100, andvarious Canon DSLRs.

HOW DO YOU FIND DSLRS?WHAT ARE THEIR GOODPOINTS? BAD POINTS?We all know the disadvantagesof DSLRs, and we shouldn'tcompare them to professionalfilm cameras, but I have to addthat I am a huge fan of CanonDSLRs. They have saved memoney and ‘my life’ many times.

DSLR is a great tool to developyour camera-skills, and learnworking with focal length andlight. Moreover, they are veryuseful while shooting sportvideos, events, reportages -especially in extreme conditionsor small spaces, or while you areon the road.

Moreover, I would neverreplace a DSLR with these handysemi-professional tv-cam-recorders with non-interchangeable lenses. I loveworking with focus/sharpness

and getting the effect ofperspective/many layers, which I can create with low lightCanon lenses!

Now that a lot of gear, likecameras, lighting and gripequipment, is getting smaller istraveling getting easier?Actually, I still have not found my"dream camera", which wouldinclude all the techspecifications that I need,packed in a small handy box. Buttrue, I think traveling with videogear is getting much easier andsmoother. Year by year, we seenew and more handytools/bags/covers.

I consider myself a physicallystrong person (for a woman), butsometimes when I'm traveling onmy own to film somereportages, I wish I had fourhands!

EQUIPMENT "WISH LIST"?I definitely would love to playmore with RED Epic Cameras.

WHAT PIECE OF GEAR DO YOUWISH SOMEONE MIGHT MAKE?I am still looking for a handy andlight professional film/video

camera. A camera truly designedto fit “human hands”.

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?Getting to know and meetingamazing people, artists,directors, filmmakers and doingwhat I really love to do!Moreover, seeing someonetouched and inspired by yourmovie, is a priceless feeling!

WORST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?As we know, every coin has twosides. It is easy to complain,anyways - if there weresomething truly bad ordisgusting, I would change myoccupation!

DULLEST ASSIGNMENTS AND WHY?Spending hours on convertingvideo footage.

On the other hand, I have tomention that working onprojects which I do not “feel”, norunderstand, or that promoteviolence on the screen, are juststupid, dull, destructive -- awaste of time and I’m avoidingthese!

TELL US ABOUT YOURHAIRIEST/SCARIESTASSIGNMENT?Scariest? I would rather callthose ‘hard’ experiences;challenging/testing my braincells and adrenal glands. I still

remember them well.For instance, I was once

working on an extremesnowboard movie in Norway andit was a fun task, but I wasalmost ‘slaughtered’ by asnowboarder, riding withmeteoric speed in my direction.

Only my nose was cut intotwo pieces by a sharp board. Ah!Happily it functions well againand the scar is almost not visibleanymore! What wouldn’tcinematographers do to get thebest shots!

HOW MUCH 16:9 DO YOU SHOOT?At the moment, I shoot most ofmy footage in 16:9.

WHAT COUNTRY WOULD YOUMOST LIKE TO SHOOT IN?I have to say that if I keepworking with passionate,spirited and dedicated people oninspirational film projects, thenthe location doesn’t actuallymatter. Anyways, some NewYork or London atmosphere, aswell as a little bit of Singaporesun, wouldn’t do me too bad ona set!

WHAT’S YOUR TASTEIN MUSIC?It varies a lot, from Indie Rock,alternative music to JamesBrown and Otis Redding; fromold good rock AC/DC, Iggy Pop toRn’B; and there is nothing moreprecious than listening tosoundtracks from my favouritemovies. They always get me intothe ‘filming mood’!
