92 pages of exclusive entertainment content, with a premium look & feel

T here is no rest for actor Erik Thomson. Season two of 800 Words, in which Erik plays father

and widower George Turner, wraps up this week. But the Scottish-born, New Zealand-raised, Australian-based star is already back in NZ shooting season three.

“The scripts are rolling in and looking good,” Erik, 49, tells TV WEEK from across the ditch. “We’re all just very grateful for getting another shot.”

Next month, the TV favourite, who rose to fame in All Saints and had further success in Packed To The Rafters, turns the big 5-0.

And while he was hoping to keep this milestone quiet, you can bet his Weld family won’t let him do that.

Of course, fi lming the series takes Erik away from his real family – his wife, actress Caitlin McDougall, and their two children, daughter Eilish, nine, and son Magnus, six.

“The hardest thing about shooting over here in New Zealand is that I’m further away from my family,” he says. “The kids are too

young to watch the show, but

Caitlin

understands shooting over here is part of the business.”

Here, Erik chats about life back home, his plans for 800 Words and what he really wants to do with his TV WEEK Logie Awards.

You live in South Australia when you’re not filming. What’s life like there?I tend to divide my time [between] New Zealand, Sydney and home in Port Willunga [a semi-rural suburb of Adelaide]. Over the Christmas break, home is a bit like Weld. You tend to see a lot of the summer people because it’s a beach location.

Your 800 Words character, George, tends to over-think things. Do you find you’re like that?I do think about things for a long period of time. But I also think, ultimately, you have to trust your gut. I think I’m getting better at listening to the voice that tells you what to do. But it’s trial and error.

This season raised the idea of George being the father of twins. How did viewers respond to this?I’m getting feedback on the street where I’ll walk into a place and people say, “Are you the father?” You realise they’re hooked into the

storyline, and that’s what you want. You want people to commit to the storyline. But it’s going to be a few more months before we fi nd out the

outcome. It’s great TV storytelling. It’s all about getting people to come back – and to get the chatter and the social media ticking over, and all the interest in the watercooler moments.

The great thing about the show is you feel like you want to spend time in Weld – you want to hang out with these

characters. Was that always the intention from the outset?I think everyone craves to be part of a community like Weld. In the big cities, especially, and probably in the smaller centres now, everyone gets so isolated. We’re in this period of interconnectedness and social media, but I don’t think the world has ever been so lonely. So our show has a kind of old-fashioned element to it.

The GuideBryan Cranston is

Dalton Trumbo, a controversial

Hollywood scriptwriter.

n One of Hollywood’s darkest chapters comes

to life in this riveting biography of Dalton Trumbo.

In the ’40s, Dalton was a successful screenwriter. His credits include war movie classic Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), and he earnt an Oscar nomination for hit drama Kitty Foyle (1940).

In 1947, Dalton’s life and career changed dramatically. He was ordered to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Dalton and many other Hollywood professionals were blacklisted for communist affiliations.

Trumbo also spent 11 months in prison for refusing to cooperate with authorities.

Oscar-nominated Bryan Cranston brilliantly portrays Dalton Trumbo, capturing his razor-sharp wit and passionate belief in social justice.

The punchy screenplay paints a vivid picture of the 12 years he spent in professional exile. Though officially barred from working, Dalton produced dozens of screenplays, among them Roman Holiday (1953). Writing credits were given to friends and false names.

Dalton Trumbo’s personal life is powerfully depicted. Diane Lane is wonderful as his loyal wife, Cleo.

On the public side of the equation is notorious gossip writer Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren). Her vicious attacks on Dalton reflect the strong undercurrent of political and social paranoia in the ’50s.

Trumbo is a compelling drama and a fascinating history lesson. It’s beautifully made, and its themes are especially relevant today.

YOUR BEST SYDNEY TV LISTINGS

PRISONERS8.30pm, Thriller (thriller, 2013). HHHHH This crime-thriller grabs you from the first frame and never lets go. Hugh Jackman (above left) is brilliant as Keller, a struggling small-town carpenter whose daughter goes missing. Paul Dano plays Alex, the chief suspect.

MINIONS7.30pm, Family (animation, 2015). HHHHH The cheeky yellow sidekicks from Despicable Me (2010) are delightful here in their first starring feature, which sees Steve (above, voice of Pierre Coffin) and his pals meet the wicked villainess Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock).

VACATION8.30pm, Comedy (comedy, 2015). HHHH There are laughs galore in this long-delayed sequel to National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983). Ed Helms and Christina Applegate (right) star.

THE DARK KNIGHT9.00pm, Nine (action, 2008). HHHHH Heath Ledger’s performance here as The Joker is superb. Christian Bale is also terrific as brooding billionaire Bruce Wayne and crime-fighting alter ego Batman, and Michael Caine is a class act as Alfred the butler.

SAFE HOUSE8.45pm, 7mate (crime, 2012). HHH Ryan Reynolds hits the mark as inexperienced CIA man Matt Weston, whose new posting is Cape Town. Things get tricky when shady former agent Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) shows up with an army of assassins on his tail.

FLASHDANCE10.30pm, 9Gem (drama, 1983). HHH This visually flashy item stars Jennifer Beals as a steel worker who’d rather be a ballerina. Jennifer’s sturdy performance anchors the uneven screenplay, which was a huge hit in the ’80s and remains a cult item today.

DOPE8.30pm, World Movies (comedy, 2015). HHHH Shameik Moore plays a conscientious hip-hop-loving high-schooler who, together with his best pals (Kiersey Clemons and Tony Revolori), gets involved in gang-related crime. It’s played with great humour and heart.

DUMBO6.30pm, Disney (animation, 1941). HHHHH The tale of Dumbo the flying elephant is one of Disney’s best. Glorious images show how he triumphs after being treated as an outcast. Dumbo never speaks a word - his actions and expressions say it all.

STAR TREK6.20pm, Action (sci-fi, 2009). HHHH Chris Pine (above right) plays Captain Kirk in this excellent reboot of the sci-fi series. The story traces Kirk’s days at Starfleet Academy. The fine cast includes Eric Bana as villain Nero and Zachary Quinto (above left) as Spock.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN8.30pm, Masterpiece (crime, 2007). HHHHH The story of this superb thrillercentres on a suitcase filled with cash. Hit man Anton (Javier Bardem) is looking for it.

BURN AFTER READING8.35pm, SBS (comedy, 2008). HHHH A dream cast sparkles in this comedy, which centres on CIA man Osborne (John Malkovich) whose memoirs fall into the hands of two gym employees (Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt). It’s cracking fun.

TOMORROW WHEN THE WAR BEGAN8.30pm, ELEVEN (action, 2010). HHH Caitlin Stasey stars in this hit adaptation of John Marsden’s novel about teens fighting back when Australia’s invaded by an enemy. Caitlin shines as a resourceful country girl who outthinks and outruns the invaders.

CONCUSSION11.00pm, SBS (drama, 2013). HHHH Abby (Robin Weigert) and Kate (Julie Fain Lawrence) are a couple with a stale marriage in this drama. Abby’s concussion leads to startling events and secret double lives. The spot-on screenplay creates a searing portrait of love and desire.

CAPTAIN ABU RAED1.40am, SBS (drama, 2008) (Jordan). HHHH This simple and charming tale centres on an airport janitor (Nadim Sawalha) who’s mistaken for a pilot. It delivers humour and heartache as kids in his neighbour-hood assume he’s a man of importance.

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE8.30pm, Premiere (thriller, 2016). HHHH This is a tense psychological drama. A scary urban survivalist (John Goodman) “rescues” a stranger (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

GEORDIE SHORE (Reality, MA 15+,112 eps)★★

It’s hard to explain what it is that makes Geordie Shore so watchable.

In essence, the show is simple. A bunch of fun-loving young

people from Newcastle, England, go out and drink

their body weight in booze before stumbling home into each other’s beds.

But scratch the surface and GS is more than just voyeurism. It’s the closest we’ll ever come to real life imitating art.

During the six weeks it takes to film a season, the gang will dissect the merits of a midnight kebab and argue over who gets the “shag pad”. It’s gripping viewing.

BRYNNE: MY BEDAZZLED LIFE S1-2

(Reality, 9 episodes)★★

Before we loved The Real Housewives

Of Melbourne, we adored another Melbourne identity: Brynne Edelsten. Hailing from the US, Brynne became a household name when she married Aussie millionaire Geo rey Edelsten.

In her 2012 fly-on-the-wall series, Brynne showed us the perks of a private jet (“no strangers with BO”) and kept

audiences captivated by her relationship with Geo rey. It was a lavish lifestyle of clothes, red-carpet events and fast cars.

But it turns out that glitzy life wasn’t quite as entertaining as other reality TV o erings.

In addition, real life also brought Brynne crashing down to earth. Since it aired, she and Geo rey have split, and she’s been plagued with legal and financial woes.

n “It’s complicated” could be the relationship

status for every character in drama series This Is Us.

Kate (Chrissy Metz) struggles to be supportive of boyfriend Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) dramatic weight loss after having less impressive results of her own.

Meanwhile, strung-out parents Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) have lost touch and are having trouble reconnecting.

And tensions between Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K Brown) finally reach boiling point.

Each character is at some kind of crossroads this week. But will they manage to take the right step forward?

If you’ve ever been called for jury duty,

you might agree, it’s a surreal experience. It’s as if you woke up and suddenly someone’s entire future is in your hands. But what if the verdict was predetermined?

That’s the question explored in new crime drama Bull. Michael Weatherly makes his highly anticipated return to TV as Dr Jason Bull, a brilliant and quirky psychologist who heads a trial profiling firm.

Along with his team of experts, Bull combines psychology, human behaviour and high-tech data to

learn what makes jurors and defendants tick.

In real life, this is called “trial science” – I didn’t know it was a thing either – and it’s vital for attorneys to win cases. In fact, the series is loosely based on the early

career of TV host Dr Phil. This week, a woman is

on trial for the murder of a celebrity basketball player.

When the media slander Reese (Celeste Arias) as a killer before the trial even begins, Bull and his team are forced to get creative to overcome a prejudicial jury.

When studies show that people

with an interest in art are often open to new things, Bull tells the attorney to select a younger, artistic panel of jurors to play in Reese’s favour. Yet data can only go so far.

Bull is no Sherlock Holmes, but he’s not a suit either.

So how does Michael’s Dr Bull stack up against his NCIS character, Tony DiNozzo? Well, we still prefer Tony, but fans will see the actor’s charm is intact.

Dr Bull is no Sherlock

Holmes, but he’s not a suit either

n Special Agent Alex Quinn (Jennifer Esposito) arrives at work after having a dream about

boss Gibbs (Mark Harmon). She attempts to forget the racy fantasy and continue on as normal, but Gibbs senses a shift in her attitude. Nothing further actually eventuates, but this storyline is a classic NCIS move. Could a relationship be in the pipeline?

“I look like A HIPPO”DAN STEVENS GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON WHAT IT WAS LIKE PLAYING BEAST

L ook who’s the Belle of the ball – it’s former Harry Potter star Emma Watson! The 26-year-old actress plays leading lady

Belle in Beauty And The Beast, the live-action take on Disney’s much-loved 1991 animated film of the same name.

Emma chats to TV WEEK about singing, being a fan of the original film, and Belle’s famous yellow dress.

You get to sing in this movie. What was that like?I’ve always wanted to sing. It’s something I talked about on the first Harry Potter film. I wanted to sing and dance. So this has been a dream come true for me. I started singing lessons in January [2015], and we started shooting at the end of March. I had three months of prep where I got myself into a place where I felt confident to sing in front of a room full of people. I’ve loved it.

What sort of a character is Belle this time?We wanted to make her very active. Belle has bloomers underneath all of her skirts. She actually walks around with one side of her skirt hiked up, so if she needs to throw her leg over a horse or fix something, we tried to reflect that. We also created pockets for her, so she could carry a book on her all the time. She’s practical, industrious and athletic. I think maybe we’ve advanced her from the original.

Belle is a very loved character. Did you feel pressure to get her right?I have these moments where I feel the pressure from my seven-year-old self – I can hear her voice. So that’s definitely an added layer of pressure. I was familiar with this on Harry Potter, because I was a big fan of the books before I was cast. To be in this situation for a second time is unique. Not many actresses have had the chance to play their personal heroes twice in their career. It’s quite unusual.

What’s your take on Belle’s iconic gold gown? The most important thing was it would almost fly. Belle becomes [like] a bird when she’s wearing it. It floats. It dances. It moves beautifully. It just looks like the most romantic dress when it’s moving.

n We talk to former Downton Abbey

star Dan Stevens, 34, who muscles up to play the film’s brooding Beast.

How is your singing? It’s not something I’ve done a huge amount of professionally. My wife [Susie Hariet] was a singing teacher. So she coached me for the audition, and she obviously did quite a good job.

What was it like playing the Beast?Engaging my voice, and engaging my body in a different way, singing

and waltzing on stilts – all of this I hadn’t

done a huge amount

of before. My daughter said I look like a hippo.

And what was it like working with Emma?I wore a muscle suit covered in grey Lycra and markers, which for some might be strange. Few have worked with this technology. But it was second nature to Emma. It also helps that she is very nice, intelligent and very engaged with the fairytale.

CONNIE BRITTON CONTINUES HER LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE COUNTRY MUSIC DRAMA

n When Nashville got cancelled last year,

actress Connie Britton had to say goodbye to her country music alter ego, Rayna Jaymes.

But now the show has been picked up by another network and is back for a fth season.

“It was pretty crazy,” Connie, 49, admits.

“It felt like my life was

out of my hands. It was amazing and humbling to see how it all fell into place at the last minute.”

The well-liked actress says she’s become very attached to the show.

“It’s a life-changing role and an opportunity I never imagined I’d get,” she confesses. “I was not an accomplished singer, but I wanted to see if I could pull it off.”

The single mother is turning 50 in March, three months ahead of

her Nashville friend Nicole Kidman.

“She and I have been talking about that,” she says.

“It’s important to depict female characters in their

40s and 50s to show women you can keep

BEING SINGLE’

SHE’S PUT HIM FIRMLY IN THE FRIEND ZONE, BUT DAVID WON’T RULE OUT A RELATIONSHIP WITH BETTY

IS KYLE DESTINED TO BREAK BEK’S HEART?

TENSIONS BETWEEN TWO RIVAL TEAMS BEGIN TO BOIL OVER AT THE TABLE

Betty is adamant she and David are just friends.

n The only thing hotter than the MKR kitchen

is the sizzling chemistry between rival contestants Kyle and Bek.

But while Bek (above), 27, admits she’s hoping for a happily ever after for the duo, Kyle doesn’t share her enthusiasm.

“I’ve been single for three years,” the bearded bartender explains to TV WEEK. “I prefer single life.”

Kyle says he has been in long-term relationships in the past. But he’s not keen to settle down at the moment.

“It’s de nitely something I’ll do in the future,” he says. “But

I’m only 27, so I’m not looking to have kids or get married any time soon.”

n As David and Betty declare they’re going

to start to play strategically, the simmering friction between the low-scoring Sydneysiders and yet-to-cook rivals Amy and Tyson comes to a head.

“We were second to cook

and we thought it was an advantage to get it out of the way,” David says.

“But as we went through the competition, you get critiques from [judges] Pete [Evans] and Manu [Feildel] on what teams did wrong and where they fell short.

If you cook later, you pick those things up.

“Amy and Tyson said, ‘Well, it’s all things we already know anyway…’

“They hold their cards pretty close to their chest and are good at keeping their game faces on.”

STORIES: JENNY COONEY CARRILLO, TIFFANY DUNK

F rom the moment he fi rst clapped eyes on his My Kitchen Rules

teammate, Betty, eight years ago, David says he had one thought: “Wow, she’s really hot!”

Betty, 27, emphatically told their fellow MKR contestants she would never date the recently divorced 32-year-old.

However, David says he hasn’t shut the door on a potential relationship.

“I would never say never,” he admits when TV WEEK asks if he’s thought about dating the social media infl uencer.

“The MKR producers asked me [if we would ever date] when we fi rst auditioned. I said, ‘You know what? I’m single now and Betty’s hot, and if it happened one day, it might happen.’”

Soon after he met Betty, David started dating his

now ex-wife. As a result, he says their relationship has always been platonic.

“I have been in a relationship for pretty much the whole time I’ve known Betty,” he says. “So I’ve never seen her in a romantic way.”

Betty expressed frustration when the pair were pressed over the status of their relationship on the show. But David says he understands why their dining companions asked the question.

“I think it’s people’s natural curiosity to want us to be together,” he says. “Obviously, we’re two good-looking people and we’re hanging out a lot.”
