Welcome to TUTS Underground Season 3!
What better way to kick off this season than with the
infamous tale of everyone’s favorite bank-robbing duo,
Bonnie & Clyde. At the height of the Great Depression,
reckless lovers Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker went
from small town nobodies in West Texas to thrilling
criminals on the run. This musical gives the audience a
chance to learn their story in a way like never before!
Season 3 continues with Striking 12, the three person
holiday musical that ties together the story of an over-
worked New Yorker and Hans Christian Andersen’s Little
Match Girl, all to a tuneful pop/rock/jazz score. We’ll
follow with the world premiere of Sweet Potato Queens
The Musical next March. TUTS has had the privilege of
collaborating with this creative team throughout the
entire process, and we are thrilled to present the final
production to the world for the first time! We round out
the season with the cult classic Heathers The Musical,
based on the 1989 film that chronicles the ultimate high
school girl clique. This season offers something for
everyone – be sure to stop by the ticket window in the
lobby to get your tickets to all of these great shows!
Thank you to all of those who have generously supported
the TUTS Underground vision. It is because of the
continued support of show sponsors Berg & Androphy
and the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation
that we are able to continue delivering the unexpected
and change what you think about musical theatre.
It’s truly amazing what we have been able to accomplish
in such a short time. We are gaining momentum both
locally and nationally, allowing Houstonians to experience
eclectic musical theatre at an affordable price. TUTS
Underground has proven to be an incredible venture for
us, and we can’t wait to see where it takes us next.
Cheers to TUTS Underground Season 3 and the many
more to come!

I am pleased to welcome you to this thrilling production of Bonnie & Clyde. With a book by Ivan Menchell, lyrics by Don Black, and music by Frank Wildhorn, this musical tells the story of the love and lost innocence of two of America’s most legendary Depression Era gangsters. The musical premiered in 2009 in La Jolla, CA, and opened on Broadway in December 2011. The show was nominated for three Outer Critics Circle Awards and five Drama Desk Awards, both including Best New Musical, as well as two nominations for the 2012 Tony Awards. I believe Bonnie & Clyde is one of Frank Wildhorn’s best musicals, and we are excited to present it to you through TUTS Underground.
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker (October 1, 1910 – May 23, 1934) and Clyde Chestnut Barrow (March 24, 1909 – May 23, 1934) were Texan outlaws and robbers from the Dallas area who traveled the central United States with their gang during the Great Depression. Bonnie and Clyde met in Texas in January 1930 and were immediately smitten. When they met, Bonnie was 19 and married to an absent criminal, and Clyde was 21 and untied. Shortly after they met, he was sentenced to jail for burglary. Bonnie smuggled a gun to him in prison, and he was able to escape. Clyde was later recaptured and sent back to prison. Although Bonnie dreamed of becoming an actress and spent her time penning poetry, she loved Clyde and rejoined him when he was paroled in February 1932.
From 1932 to 1934, Bonnie and Clyde’s gang evolved from petty uncalculating, common criminals to nationally-known bank robbers, murderers, and public enemies. The gang was believed responsible for at least 13 murders, including several policemen, as well as several
robberies and kidnappings. At times, Bonnie and Clyde were joined by Clyde’s brother and sister-in-law Buck Barrow and Blanche Barrow, Raymond Hamilton, W. D. Jones, Joe Palmer, Ralph Fults, and Henry Methvin. Despite the glamorous, romanticized portrait painted of them by the media, Bonnie and Clyde and their gang lived a harsh life out of Clyde’s various stolen cars which he would drive from state to state to avoid being caught. The spree came to an end in 1934. Before dawn on May 23, 1934, a posse composed of six police officers from Louisiana and Texas, led by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, concealed themselves in bushes along the highway near Sailes, Louisiana. Bonnie and Clyde appeared in an automobile and when they attempted to drive away, the officers opened fire, shooting a reported 130 rounds at the couple’s car. During the ambush, Bonnie was shot by 26 bullets, and Clyde was shot 17 times. Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were once victims of the harsh times and living conditions during the Great Depression which led them to make decisions which would change their lives forever and eventually claim them.
I am thrilled to be co-directing this piece with TUTS’ Associate Artistic Director, Marley Wisnoski, and we are joined by local choreographer, Dana Lewis, and local music director, Thom Culcasi. it has been a privilege to work with the talented designers, stage management, cast, band, and crew in bringing the legend of Bonnie and Clyde to life.
We hope that you will join us again at TUTS Underground for the remaining shows of the season which include Striking 12, Sweet Potato Queens, and Heathers. Enjoy the show!
Join the revolution!
“Some day they'll go down together; And they'll bury them side by side;To few it'll be grief—To the law a relief—But it's death for Bonnie and Clyde.”

BRUCE lUMPKINArtistic Director
Bruce Lumpkin joined the staff at Theatre Under The Stars in July 2012 as Artistic Director to maintain artistic oversight of TUTS’ producing operations, to provide creative direction to TUTS’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, and to enhance TUTS’ voice in the arts community. In 2013, he launched TUTS’ newest venture, TUTS Underground—a series featuring ground-breaking, alternative, and affordable new musicals.
After earning his BFA from the University of Houston, Bruce got his start in theatre at TUTS as the resident director of the Humphreys School. He soon caught the attention of Tommy Tune, who recruited Bruce to work on several Broadways titles including Grand Hotel, My One and Only, Nine, Stepping Out, and The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas.
Bruce’s career has taken him to several respected theatres across the nation including the 5th Avenue Theatre, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, Casa Manana, Dicapo Opera Company, Heritage Entertainment, the Lyric Theatre, Maine State Musical Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, the Pittsburgh CLO, and Walnut Street Theatre. He counts Summer ’69 and Honky Tonk Angel among his off-Broadway work, and he served as the artistic director to Broadway’s Mindfreak featuring illusionist Criss Angel. Additionally, Bruce co-directed Grand Hotel on London’s West End and served on the creative team for the national tours of Dr. Doolittle and Nine. He received the Barrymore Award for Best Director and Best Musical for his revisionist look at Cabaret. Other personal milestones for Bruce include his work in the world premieres of Dodsworth and Grossingers and the US premiere of La Vie En Bleu.
Bruce is thrilled to have returned to Houston, the city where he grew up, and to work at TUTS, the theatre where his career began.
