Continuing we drive to necropolis at Saqqara wevisit the largest pyramid in all of Egypt, the StepPyramid at Saqqara. Built during the third dynastyof the Old Kingdom (prior to the Pyramids ofGiza) to protect the body of the king Zhoser whodied around 2649BC. The Step Pyramid was theblue print or the feat that heralded the short butremarkable age of the gigantic stone pyramids ofancient Egypt.

Later there is time for dinner before travelling onthe overnight seater train to Aswan. At the trainstation, there’ll be the opportunity to buy more waterand snacks for the trip ahead. Option to upgradeto sleeper train cabins. See brochure or website fordetails. Overnight - Train (B)

Day 3 : Philae Temple &Aswan High DamAswan. Arrive and check into our hotel. A visit out oftown takes us to the mighty High Dam – a modernfeat of engineering, the by–product for which isLake Nasser – the world’s largest artificial lake!Continuing, we enjoy a short boat trip to AgilikaIsland for Philae Temple - dedicated to the goddessIsis. The temple dates from 4th century BC but thePtolomies and the Romans up to 3rd century ADbuilt most of the existing structures. Later, free timeto perhaps do some shopping in the colourful souksand markets or simply relax in this attractive townwhich straddles the River Nile. Overnight - Aswan(B)

Days 4-5 : Felucca Sailing

Aswan – Nile felucca cruise – Kom Ombo - allmeals. Day 4 - Optional early morning air excursionto famous Abu Simbel - the gargantuan rockcuttemple of King Ramses II, the Great Builder(details of this optional excursion are featuredin our brochure and online). Possibly the mostawe-inspiring temple of all ancient Egypt, withits gargantuan rock-cut façade, Abu Simbel wascreated to revere the mighty pharaonic ruler KingRamses II. Guarding the entrance to the temple, the four famous colossal statues of Ramses IIsit majestically, staring out across the desert, seemingly since time began. Famously, the templewas re-located in a multi-million dollar operation in1972, further up from the shoreline of Lake Nasser, which had threatened to erode the foundations ofthis monolithic temple complex.

If you choose not to embark upon this optionalexcursion, there is plenty to do in Aswan, before

our early afternoon departure on our Nile feluccacruise. You can relax at the hotel, explore Aswanand its beautiful shoreline and corniche or perhapsdo a spot of shopping. This afternoon, we board ourwind-powered Nile felucca for a 2-night voyage onthe River Nile upstream to Kom Ombo. Feluccasare simple sailboats based on a unique design andhave plied the mighty Nile since ancient times.

If sailing by felucca is not for you, considerupgrading to a 5 star luxury Nile Cruise with ourPharaoh’s Pass. 2 nights onboard the felucca. Allmeals included.

NOTE: As feluccas are wind-powered, our itinerarycannot be rigidly defined. However, during ourcruise, we make plenty of stops to visit points ofinterest, areas for swimming and for the purposeof performing our ablutions. (there are no toilets orshowers on board) The felucca sails during the day,and prior to sundown, the anchor is dropped andwe moor at the riverside for the night. The craftcarries between 5-10 passengers comfortably andthe deck is strewn with soft colorful cushions andrugs and equipped with a canopy that offers shadeand protection from the elements. You will needto bring a sleeping bag/ sleeping sheet and also atowel with you. Soft drinks, water and beer can bepurchased aboard.

THE NILE FELUCCA CRUISE: Before boardingthe felucca, it is important you prepare a day bag- taking care to pack things you feel you’ll needduring the cruise, as your large bag will be placedbelow in below deck storage. If unable to swim, youmust advise your tour leader before boarding.

5 STAR NILE CRUISER: Those travellers whohave opted and paid the supplement to travelaboard the Nile 5 Star cruiser will be providedwith their cruising schedule upon arrival in Cairo.Boarding of the Nile 5 star cruiser will usually beon Day 3 for a period of 3 nights, or on Day 4 fora period of 3 nights. Overnight - Felucca Cruise(B:2, L:2, D:2)

Day 6 : Kom Ombo & EdfuTempleKom Ombo - Edfu - Luxor. Disembarking in KomOmbo, we enjoy a visit to the Temple of Horusat Edfu. Having the distinction of being the largestand most completely preserved pharaonic, albeitGreek-built, temple in Egypt, it was one of the lastmonumental temples built on a large scale. Thoughmuch newer than the temples of Karnak and Luxor, its excellent state of structural preservation fills in alot of historical gaps because it is, in effect, a 2000year old replica of an architectural style that wasalready age-old during Ptolemaic times. Back onthe bus, we rejoin the police convoy as we drivenorth to Luxor. Home of the legendary Valley ofthe Kings and Temple of Karnak, 4000 year-oldLuxor is ancient Egypt at it’s best. Enjoy some restand relaxation. Tonight, an optional visit is availableto the Temple of Luxor. The excursion is payablelocally. Rest of evening free. Overnight - Luxor (B)

Day 7 : Valley of the Kings

The first monument you’llsee on the West Bank is the imposing 18m-highColossi of Memnon, which represent the remainsof the temple of the hedonistic Amenophis III.Further highlights include the legendary Valley ofthe Kings and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. This morning there is also the chance to opt for ahot air balloon flight - see the website or brochurefor more details.

The Valley of the Kings is studded with often highlydecorated tombs, constructed to once house theregal sarcophagi enclosed mummies of the mightypharaohs awaiting their passage into the after-life.Later this afternoon after time to relax, we visitthe Temple of Karnak - a spectacular temple ona gigantic scale dedicated to the Theban gods.Karnak is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, pylons, chapels, halls and obelisks, all dedicated tothe Theban gods and to the greater glory of Egypt’sMiddle and New Kingdom rulers.

EtiquetteDespite the inevitable ups and downs of travellingabroad, you will generally be shown greathospitality in Egypt. In return, please demonstratesensitivity and respect for the local customs. Egyptis a Muslim country; so care should be taken todress respectfully in large cities and towns, forexample, when at markets and in public places.

• Ladies should avoid wearing ‘clingy, tight orsuggestive’ attire, and stick to cool, flowing, cottons in busy city areas and markets

• Take care to dress conservatively andensure that limbs are covered and removefootwear prior to entering a mosque.

• Ex-military style clothing should not beworn

• Ask permission before taking photographsof people.

• Beach attire is fine on board feluccacruises, at beach resorts or touristic areasi.e. at the Pyramids.

• Particular respect should be shown toMuslim women.

• The standard form of greeting is ahandshake. Men and women do not kiss atany time as a form of greeting.

Mosques, Religion & Ramadan90% of the population are Muslim. Others areCoptic Christians or followers of other faiths. Allmosques (with the exception of Sayyida Zeinaband Al-Hussein in Cairo) are open to non-Muslimsbut cannot be visited during prayer times. ForEgypt’s best mosques, go to Islamic Cairo. Dressconservatively. Ensure limbs are covered andshoes removed when entering any Mosque. Menmust refrain from wearing shorts, as must women.

RAMADANRamadan is a month of fasting observed byMuslims throughout the world and adherents of theMuslim faith fast during daylight hours and breaktheir fast with lavish meals and lively celebrations inthe evening. Ramadan culminates a month later ina 3 day celebration called Eid al - Fitr. Many shops(excluding those which cater mainly to tourists)and attractions close earlier during Ramadan. Assuch we will start our tour earlier during this periodto make the best use of time, leisure time willbe offered in the late afternoon. Note: Traffic isexceptionally heavy during Ramadan, especiallytoward the time of breaking the fast.. ForthcomingRamadan dates are as follows, (approximate) -21 July - 20 August 201209 July - 07 August 2013

Many shops (excluding those which cater mainlyto tourists) and attractions close earlier duringRamadan, so our itinerary is slightly altered toensure we visit all itinerary attractions. Non Muslimsare not expected to fast over Ramadan, but it isconsidered impolite to eat food or drink on thestreet.

Trouble ShootingThese things will most likely never happen, but it’sgood to be prepared if they ever do. Here are a fewtips to keep your trip hassle-free. Egypt is no worsethan anywhere else when it comes to crime. Thebiggest problem seems to be petty theft, includingpick-pocketing andbag snatching. Minimise your chances of beingrobbed with these tips:

• Leave valuables in the hotel safe deposit orbetter still, at home

• Carry your passport on your person or aphotocopy as ID

• Carry your bag close to your person ratherthan over your shoulder

• Travel in a group or pair, especially if youare female

• Don’t catch cabs late at night on your own• Never drink anything offered to you in the
