TUSKYS BOARD CHAIRMAN DR. JOHN KAGO KAMAU

Tusker Mattresses has been in operation as a retailer for the last 25 years in Kenya and the region. We have so far enjoyed support from communities and stakeholders across the divide. Therefore it gives me great joy and satisfaction to have this newsletter as a strategic

way of creating a conversation with our key stakeholders.

We at Tuskys have taken new strategic directions to make your shopping better and convenient.

This marks yet another milestone for us in our deliberate efforts not only to become a successful brand on every street and corner, but also to touch lives in the process.

health. We for instance do not stock alcohol or cigarettes in our shops because we know that alcoholism is currently one of the greatest huddles that the country is facing. Many of our youths have become unproductive or incapacitated because of alcohol. We do not want to waste our future generations. We want to guard what is ours with great honour. This is part of our commitments as Tuskys and in line with the wishes of the Founder the Late Joram Kamau.

I would like to sincerely thank all our partners for walking with us and bringing Tuskys to these new heights. As we leap into a new phase, I on behalf of the Board and management of Tuskys would like to assure you of better days ahead.

We have also signed partnership pacts with VIVO Energy and you will soon enjoy convenient shopping in all Shell Petrol Stations countrywide.

We realized that for us to boost our growth margins and respond to the changing needs in the sector, we cannot be lone rangers. We need partners to hold our hands to enable us enter new markets and exploit our untapped potential.

As we grow the Tuskys brand, we will continue providing solutions to problems faced by communities that we operate in. We pledge to continue working with communities and empowering them for better lives and livelihoods.

As the Tuskys brand expands and continues to touch lives, we pledge to remain committed to our guiding principles of operations which includes upholding high levels of integrity giving quality and value, respect as well as promoting healthy living.

TUSKYS CEO DAN GITHUA

GITHUA: THE SHIP IS ALREADY AFLOAT!

WHAT IS NEW?

The retail sector is changing and so is Tuskys, your favourite shopping store that has grown to become an indomitable brand and inked indelible marks in the sector in its last 25 years of existence.

From its meek beginnings in Rongai, Nakuru, Tuskys has grown into a phenomenal empire with 58 branches in Kenya and Uganda and over 6,800 employees, in addition to supporting millions of livelihoods indirectly through suppliers and other initiatives.

A solutions-oriented retail chain with a human face pillared on its strong heritage of integrity and human values, Tuskys has taken a new strategic direction to enable it sail further to greatness in the industry.

Led by experienced entrepreneur Mr. Dan Githua who took over the leadership mantle in May 2015, a young and dynamic team is now in place expected to inject the business with freshness.

Dan is also armed with a grand growth strategy that is expected to propel the Chain to new unmatched heights.

Here are some excerpts from the interview with Dan on the growth strategy:

Q1. Please explain the need for Tuskys’ new strategic direction of growing from GOOD to GREAT. Tuskys has been successful brand so far, both in Kenya and Uganda. When you look at the market today, there is a great shift in the retail sector. The customer now has more options and is more informed and demanding. We therefore realized that we cannot fill these gaps by banking on our past success alone. We needed a strategy to propel future success. We sat down and plotted what we thought could help us build a successful empire able to stand strong in the ever-changing and competitive market. We thus came up with the new strategy dubbed Tuskys 2.0.

addition, we also have an ongoing training for our 6000 staff to align them to the customer centric culture that we are trying to build. Of course investments in the area of distribution and ICT are on course for 2016.

We also introduced performance-based staff commissions for all our staff in October last year to boost employee morale and enhance performance. This has gone down so

WHAT IS NEW?

First, we have to win with the customer. We already have the highest footfall of customers in our stores. To keep them happy, we want to improve on our service offering and build a strong customer-centric culture. The people working in Tuskys must live this and customers will see a new enthusiasm about how we do our daily tasks in the stores.

Q2. What are the main highlights in the new strategy that will help position Tuskys in the retail sector in the entire region? First, we have to win with the customer. We already have the highest footfall of customers in our stores. To keep them happy, we want to improve on our service offering and build a strong customer-centric culture. The people working in Tuskys must live this and customers will see a new enthusiasm about how we do our daily tasks in the stores.

In addition, we also know that the retail business operates on very thin margins. Here, efficiency reigns and so we are keen on building an efficient distribution network that will ensure there is product availability at all times.

We also want to use technology better to deliver services to customers. We have therefore invested heavily in building a strong ICT platform to differentiate our service offering to customers.

Q3. How will this strategy impact on the overall growth pattern? As we gear for a listing at the NSE in the next five years, our plan is to achieve an annual 20% growth. I believe that this is achievable with the right people, the right product and the right price.

Q4. As the captain at the helm of Tuskys leadership, what initiatives have you put in place to ensure that the Strategy is implemented within the set timelines ?We started off with staff that is getting the right talent on the bus. We have done lots of hiring lately. In

well and not only boosted our sales but also motivated our staff.

These are some of the foundation pillars for Tuskys 2.0 strategy.

Q5. It is indeed a transition period in the 25 years history of Tuskys. Is the transition smooth? Has the ship taken off? Yes. The ship is already afloat. We had of course anticipated some transition challenges especially internally which is common with any organization undergoing change management but it is amazing how staff have embraced the new changes .

This is all thanks to the tremendous support that we have received from the Board. We pledge to go extra miles to deliver value to all our key stakeholders.

Q6. How does the future look like for Tuskys? We can only get better in the industry. With the retail sector contributing over 15 per cent to GDP, we are a brand to watch in shaping this industry.

“How can I sell more to customers?” is a frequent question from

all sorts of retailers. This is because many retailers try out all kinds of marketing to get their name out there. But what happens when all the hard work brings the customer through your doors and they don’t open their wallets? Or worse, they open their smart phones and buy from a competitor while inside your shop. Declining purchasing power, dwindling customer traffic, shared loyalty, mushrooming of retail outlets, e-retail, specialized retail, more informed and networked customers, increasing social media influence in the demand and supply forces can call for nothing short of alarming any retailer of the changing market dynamics.

Several retail aspects which are key determinants of retail growth are key areas which established retailers are focusing to improve the efficiency of their processes. For instance, product quality, customer service, competitive prices just to mention, can make or ruin your business. It is worth noting most of these aspects are more or less the same across board and so one would quickly ask, then what can give a retailer a competitive edge

the key objective of Tuskys as a retail chain to deliberately invest in training and empowering its staff so as to meet the ever changing customer expectations.

Being a beneficiary of the same, I can attest to the fact that, the training programme has transformed my view of retail business. Actually what the programme is doing is to transform employees into business leaders who can actively and constructively be engaged in making informed decisions in this retail business. As a matter of fact, this investment leaves a permanent mark, and skills acquired go a long way to help the beneficiaries even when outside Tuskys. This in my view is a long overdue step that retailers should have taken. I am glad that Tuskys has emerged as a leader of the pack in the retail sector.

I would like to commend the minds behind this bold move and say, this is a sure investment and everyone within Tuskys Community can agree with me that we are already enjoying the fruits of this training.

WHAT IS NEW?

TRAINING HAS TRANSFORMED ME TO A VISIONARY BUSINESS LEADER

over fellow front runners? From experience and exposure, I think customer service is the best bet for any retailer. This school of thought is shared by many in both developed and developing markets.

Tuskys Supermarket, a brand that has stood strong in the last 25 years happens to share the same school of thought. This is why it has recognized the need to turn around the business from good to great pivoted by customer focus as the key business driver.

Staff Capacity BuildingMany will agree with me that staff capacity building sits at the centre of improved or improving customer service delivery. Again I think that is

WHAT IS NEW?

Tuskys staff have been smiling to the bank each month all thanks to the newly introduced commission schemeThe scheme is a monthly staff bonus payoff that is based on branch performance.

This was introduced in October last year to reward hard-working employees, motivate staff and also to boost performance of the retail chain.

In November, the company paid out a total of KES. 3.26 Million in commissions that saw 8 staff members from Shiloah branch in Kakamega each getting KES. 61,198.

The December cake was even bigger. A total of KES. 6,407,675.77 was paid out to staff in Commissions with Shiloah team carrying the winners’ flag again, bagging a total of KES. 1,225,289.03 in commissions.

The retailers’ management believes that all employees should work under some form of incentive program so that they can apply themselves fully.

To make the structure more effective, a Commission Structure Committee has been set up to streamline the process and ensure that it suits the needs of all employees.

The Committee drawn from different branches comprises of the following:1. Joram Wachira- Branch Manager

Tmall– Chairman2. Dorcus Ngaruiya – HRBP, Secretary3. Nyaga Wagacha – Branch Manager,

Shiloa -Member4. Chanjira Kegome –Branch Admin,

NYAGA WAGACA: MY TEAM IS MORE MOTIVATED THAN EVERHere is a message from the elated, humble and soft-spoken Shiloah Branch Manager Nyaga Wagaca:

I am grateful that shiloah has carried the winner’s flag for the two consecutive months since the introduction of commissions in October.

This has not been easy for us as a team and more so for me as the captain of the star branch. Mobilizing a workforce of over one hundred and making sure that they work with uniform zeal and energy to meet and surpass targets is not a mean feat.

Since emerging the team of the month in November, the pressure

to perform has been huge. But the motivation levels amongst staff has also been above the bar. With the help of the sales coordinator and sales merchandisers who actively engaged staff in serious selling, making good use of all promotions, creating a sales team and most importantly fostering teamwork, we have managed to sail this far and set standards even higher.

Participatory leadership key in building teamsThe past two months has taught me a lot of things. As a leader keen in fostering synergy, you need to be part of the team and be part of so many activities in the store. As a routine now, My assistant and I do not sit back and watch things roll. We get involved in various activities including truck offloading, stock replenishment, selling at the sales floor and other store activities to give moral support to teams and ensure that we are moving as one.

“Having been hired, I am now entitled to a salary and leave. I am engaged. I am not idle.”

You only need to hear Morris Wanjohi narrate his heady experience as an intern at TUSKYS Supermarket to know how excited he is. You get to understand his excitement even better when you learn that he was accepted into the internship programme a week before he graduated from Amboseli Institute with a diploma in food production certificate.

You get to appreciate excitement when you learn that he is now fully employed at TUSKYS.

Since January 2 this year, he was transferred from TUSKYS Enkarasha in Nairobi where he undertook his internship, to the TUSKYS Eldoret Branch bakery as a new member of staff.

Mr Wanjohi, 25, who was among the first interns to join the TUSKYS training programme, hails it as a “good platform for venturing into the hospitality business”.

He says: “Usually hustling is tough after graduation from college. The internship is an easy way to join the world of work. Having been hired, I am now entitled to a salary and leave. I am engaged. I am not idle.”

Wanjohi says the TUSKYS internship programme is a godsend to young people like him. He appreciates what he has been taught as well as the employment.

“Before they release you to the industry, you are taken through class training for two weeks to learn about customer care service, financial management, communication skills, life skills and many more about TUSKYS, the retail industry and also personal life teachings. Motivational speakers motivate interns about the programme.”

“We are in a situation where young people fresh from campus and colleges have good papers but have no experience, and yet the companies need personnel with experience,” he explains.

BRIDGING THE GAP

INTERNS’ DELIGHT AT BEING EMPLOYED

“Internship made a difference in my life because it made me more confident about my abilities”

Fridah Moraa, 23, believes she received an early Christmas present last year. After undergoing internship at TUSKYS from August, the supermarket group employed and posted her to its Chigware branch in Kisii four months later.

When she learnt that she was beginning new life as a TUSKYS employee beginning December 1, 2015, she was ecstatic. It had taken her only four months of internship to qualify for employment.

Since completing her Form Four studies, she had been busy in college and had had no time to think of marriage. First she went for a mobile phone repair course, then she joined Nairobi Aviation College for her certificate and diploma in sales and marketing.

Now working as a cashier, she says being busy has helped her to avoid career distractions. She says that some of her peers are either idle or married just because they lack the opportunity she got.

“During my internship, I learnt new skills,” she says. “I learnt how to deal with customers and how the retail business works as well as financial management, among other skills. Internship made a difference in my life because it made me more confident about my abilities and gave me the work experience I needed to do my job well. Before I joined the programme, I used to fear facing people.”

Ms Moraa is grateful to TUSKYS for giving her the opportunity to acquire practical skills she says will help her advance in her career. She also appreciates the money that her employer used to pay her as an intern. The amount that TUSKYS used to save for her came in handy when she reported at her new place of work. It was the money she used to start her new life.

BRIDGING THE GAP

Tuskys Supermarket last year unveiled an ambitious supply chain financing facility in partnership with

Diamond Trust Bank and KCB that now allows SME suppliers to get their payments for supplies to Tuskys on time. The facility in addition enables SMEs to access credit from financing partners at preferential rates through guarantees from Tuskys.

This will enable SMEs working with Tuskys to have better cash flows to run their businesses and scale up the growth ladder. The Facility will also allow them to access cash before invoices are due.

Tuskys has been keen on growing the SME segment that is seen as the next frontier in economic freedom. The Supermarket has had a long history with SMEs and been working with over 1600 SME suppliers, who employ over 160,000 people, hence helping to bridge the unemployment gap.

Most of these dealers supply from as little as 500, 000 shillings to 5million monthly.

Tuskys/SME relationship goes beyond ordinary retail engagements. The Chain has seen many SMEs sprout to compete with multinationals, courtesy of Tuskys.

Some of the innovative Small businesses that have flourished with Tuskys include:

In liquids on Tap – The milk ATMTuskys was the pioneer in launching what is now commonly known as the milk on tap in partnership with

Aspendos Dairies. This has now been adopted by all other major retailers. It is a great innovation that allows customers purchase milk in whatever quantity. This has been a solution to most people who find packaged milk expensive. The milk is clean, safe and hygienic and customers have the freedom to choose the quantity and how much to pay.

Today, Tuskys sells 6000 litres of milk every day on tap, in partnership with Aspendos. Through this

innovation, Tuskys is supporting 2000 small scale dairy farmers in Muranga county.

Tuskys sweet potato breadTuskys partnered with CIP international to produce sweet potato bread, through a project funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This has been beneficial not only to customers who now have variety in bread selection but has also changed lives of potato farmers.

Tuskys is now supporting 400 small scale farmers in MIGORI/SIAYA/KISUMU/HOMABAY, who now have a source of livelihood. Tuskys buys 500k of sweet potatoes root daily from these farmers.

Working with Agriculture through aggregationTuskys stocks fresh green vegetables from the farms. In order to provide the fresh vegetables,

Tuskys has partnered with aggregators who collect produce and deliver to Tuskys. This has hooked up to 1000 small farmers of vegetables across Kenya through this model.

Working with the Association of Fashion DesignersThis is a new partnership that Tuskys is exploring that will go a long way in enriching the local fashion

design sector. This is more so after the recent launch of its first specialty clothing store that targets its over 4 million customers.

DTB has partnered with Tuskys to unveil a value chain financing facility that will see Tuskys suppliers

and business partners get payments from DTB before their invoices are due, enabling them to have better cash flows. The financing partnership will also enable small and medium sized companies (SMEs) that supply the retailer, get loans from DTB at preferential rates.

It is widely recognized that SMEs face unique challenges that affect their growth and profitability as well as their role to contribute effectively to sustainable development. The prominent challenges are route to market and access to finance. Most enterprises rely on friends and relatives to fund and grow their businesses. Most banks are hesitant in engaging with SMEs forcing them to resort to high cost short term finance.

Similar HistoryCommenting on the partnership, DTB CEO and MD Nasim Devji says says, “Tuskys and DTB share similar history; that of growing with the support of SMEs. This new partnership seeks to resolve the common SME challenge of route to market, access to financing and delayed payments,

the financing chain for the SMEs. The supermarket will also have consistent supply of goods from their suppliers leading to a wider variety for the shoppers.

SME suppliers will now access payments before their invoices are due. The unbanked suppliers also have an opportunity to work with a financial institution to increase their access to finance and subsequently experience faster growth.

The SME sector, the engine that spurs the country’s economic growth has huge growth potential- SMEs comprise about 75 % of all businesses in Kenya, contributing 18.4 % (8.07Billion dollars) of the country’s GDP (42.8 Billion Dollars). The sector provides approximately 80% of employment and contributes to over 92% of the new jobs created annually. (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 2015).

Nasim Devji says, “Almost 90% of SMEs in Kenya have faced cash flow problems including delayed payments from their suppliers.  The lack of

access to credit facilities from financial institutions hinders the growth of small businesses.

Apart from this, DTB continues to support SME’s by providing a platform for small and medium-sized enterprises to interact and share growth-promoting practices. The platform known as Top100 Mid-sized survey helps SMEs benchmark themselves against other top industry players.

“DTB has firsthand experience in the

SME journey and having grown over the years, we are very cognizant of the challenges faced by SME’s in today’s economic environment. As a bank, we largely attribute our phenomenal growth to working hand in hand with SMEs and that is why we focus more on supporting the growth of mid-sized companies.” says Nasim.

INSTANT WIN CAMPAIGN GIVES SHOPPERS A SIZZLING CHRISTMAS

Christmas was bigger and better last year for all Tuskys shoppers as a KES 50 Million campaign was launched to allow customers shop

and win instantly at the tills. This was part of the firm’s 25-years anniversary celebrations that kicked off in June last year.

This was done through random winning at the Tills for gift vouchers worth KES 500, KES 1000 or KES 10,000 within the Christmas period.

This was courtesy of suppliers namely Unilever, Colgate Palmolive, Brand Imports, Phones Direct and Aspendos Dairies. This campaign is expected to draw more customers in our outlets and grow our sales volumes.

The campaign was unique and a one of its kind given that winners were determined by the system and not through draws and coupons as has been the custom. This ensured that there was less human interaction.

Lucky customers, young and old, from all walks of life across the country overwhelmingly won.
