CORNERSTONE OF HOPE LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE

NEW INFANT LOSS PROGRAMHeart of My Heart is Cornerstone of Hope’s program for parents who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or loss of an infant.

From the moment we learn that we will be a mother or a father, we love our baby more than we could imagine. Our hearts expand so much to love that baby enough that we are willing to lay down our lives for this precious new life that we are so excited to meet. Following the loss of a baby, we are forever changed. You are not alone in your grief, and we understand the significant pain of loss that you are experiencing.

Children & Teen Grief

YOUTH BEREAVEMENT CAMP Q&A

Following a busy summer of youth bereavement camps, we sat down to talk with our Camp Director Brianna Bonacci and Art Therapist Rebekah Chilcote about Cornerstone of Hope’s camp program and issues faced by grieving children and teens.

What were some of the camp activities?Camp Cornerstone, our weeklong day camp, was held at Cornerstone of Hope. Camp Cornerstone’s theme this year was Medieval Kingdom. The campers experienced a Zoo Trip, Bubble Soccer, Swimming, Ice Skating, and plenty of outdoor fun. Camp Erin, our weekend overnight camp, was held at Beulah Beach in Vermilion. Camp Erin Campers experienced Paddleboating, Kayaking, Zip lining, Slip N Slide, and many more wilderness adventures. At both camps, children participated in therapies and activities designed to help them through their grief.

Prior to coming to camp, what kind of issues are grieving children experiencing? R – In addition to experiencing the pain of loss, grieving children can feel isolated. B – Traumatic losses are not easy to talk about for children. Through attending camp, kids realize that they are not the only one who has experienced a loss. This is a place where children can fit in. R – Also, sometimes kids can have difficulty talking to a parent because their parent is also grieving.

What effects do Cornerstone camps have on children?R – Camp helps children to access grief in a different way. Kids hear kids talking about loss and are empowered to share their own experience.B – Camp lets kids dig deeper into their feelings. They learn that it is ok to talk and to cry.R – When one child shared the cause of death of their loved one, then other children felt comfortable sharing also. The children led each other to a deeper level of healing.

B – Through camp, kids learn that they can confide in a trusted adult, like a counselor, teacher, or coach about their feelings.

How did the teens experience camp?B – Initially, teens may be hesitant to come to camp. However, once they are here, the teens are eager to connect with one another, and form groups. One teen camper said, “I am glad that I came, at first, I did not want to.” Also, some of the teens return to camp to help out.

Tell us about the campersB – This year, half of the campers were new to the camp, and half were returning from a previous year. It is so amazing to see kids healthy and thriving. Some kids share that they cannot wait for next year.R – The first day of camp starts off quietly, but by the second day, kids are talking and everyone has made a friend!

Children & Teen Grief

HELPING GRIEVING CHILDREN SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS• Be aware of personal loss issues. Our own experiences with death and grief can have a major impact on how we respond to our children.

• Establish and maintain contact with the school. Children spend many hours of their day at school. The more you can learn from teachers and school counselors, the better you will be able to provide support at home. Likewise, the more you can share with teachers about what you are observing at home, the better equipped the teachers will be.

• Approach the topic of death and grief with your children. If you tell children, “Let me know if you need to talk,” there is a good chance they won’t. Children are often uncomfortable initiating conversations about an emotionally laden topic, especially if they think it might upset their parents. Reach out to them and let them know it is okay to talk to you.

• Keep in mind the developmental level of the child and begin there. Younger children need simple, concrete definitions and explanations.

• Use the deceased person’s name or title (i.e., Mother, Aunt Jane). Listen. Let the child’s questions guide you. Answer with a question until you understand exactly what the child is asking.

• Be patient. Remember, children may ask the same questions or tell the same stories over and over again as they process and adjust to their loss.

• Remember that grief may be intermittent. Children grow up with their loss and may have reactions at various points of their development re-gardless of how long ago the loss occurred. Also, be aware of the resurfacing of emotions around important days of the year such as birthdays, holidays, and the anniversary of the death.

• Grief is often exhibited through behaviors. Children need the structure of their normal routine, adult role models, appropriate limit-setting, and discipline. However, grieving children also need affection and security. They need to hear that we understand and that we care about them despite their acting-out behaviors.

Spiritual Corner

Each human is born into a unique family system and nothing can ever change the reality of our family of origin. We will always have the same blood and DNA flowing through our veins. We would be foolish to deny the truth of our physical DNA. Few attempt to deny their biological DNA but many deny their spiritual DNA. When we deny our divine DNA we live in excessive anxiety, guilt, shame and fear. We are lost and feel overwhelming insecurity.

“Imago Dei” comes from the Latin version of the Bible, translated to English as “Image of God.” It is defined as the metaphysical belief that all of humanity is God’s beloved offspring. The phrase has its origins in Genesis 1:27, wherein "God created man in his own image”. We are created in the im-age of God. We have divine DNA. We are children of God. We are sheep in the pasture of the “Good Shepherd” (John 10:11). As King David describes in Psalms 23, the pasture of God offers us rest, refreshment, restoration and peace. God’s pasture is our current and eternal home. It is our destiny.

It is the true and essential purpose of our lives to discern the divine image in ourselves and everyone. The “Image of God” is absolute and unchanging. There is nothing humans can do to increase or decrease it. It is a pure and total gift, given equally to all. God’s image within each of us is inherent and irrevocable. It is not something we can create or earn. It is not a label, position or title we receive. The Apostle John puts it directly: “My dear people, we are already the children of God” (1 John 3).

Every day we are given a choice to live out the divine inheritance we have been given from birth. Daily we are given an invitation to fully embrace the sovereignty of the Father and trust the cosmic unfolding of beauty, light and love. What does it look like when we fully accept our inheritance as Children of God? It simply looks like a person living with true inner peace reflected in their internal state of being and daily thoughts.

- Ty Morgan, MSW, LSW Spiritual Care Coordinator/Clinician

DIVINE DNA “IMAGO DEI”See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! - 1 John 3:1 NLT

Signs of Inner Peace • A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences• An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment • A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others

• A loss of interest in conflict • A loss of interest in the ability to worry • Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation (A Heart Full of Gratitude) • Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature
