#TumblarianTalk—ALA Annual ConferenceJune 30, 2014
The Beginning – finding our voiceWe started the Tumblr in March 2011. We posted this yearbook image of Sean Daley a.k.a. Slug of local hip hop group, Atmosphere. It was picked up by the local alternative newsweekly and tweeted by Slug himself, demonstrating we could be less formal than other HCL social channels.
Timely Topics - #mnmarriageHistorical tidbits are shared that tie in directly with current events. This is a post about the first female Minneapolis Public Library director, who was also in two committed relationships with women. Shared when gay marriage passed in Minnesota.
Guest posts from Interns and VolunteersStewart Van Cleve – a respected LGBTQ historian, intern at Special Collections, wrote a post on Minneapolis “drag kings” and “drag queens.” Spotlights the collection, empowers the intern or volunteer and gives them something to add to their résumé.
Partnerships with ResearchersPenny Petersen, a long time Special Collections user and local historian, wrote an excellent history of the “tolerated prostitution” era in Minneapolis. She made a big discovery at HCL (above) that proved the city knowingly provided construction permits to bordellos.
