"Out in the West" - By Sophie Loftus

That darn alarm went off again! I roll out of bed as dad is yelling my name. It is time to get up but no one wants to get out of their warm cosy bed. It’s the last day of shearing out at the farm and my job is to help the shearers by picking up the wool. I love being a rouseabout in the sun and having a yarn with the workers. The clicking sound of the handpiece makes everyone happy, as dad pushes up more sheep in the pen.

It’s hard and hot but everyone soldiers on and keeps going. The old shearing shed is torn to bits in the hot sun. The shearers are stuffed as they keep picking up them sheep and getting the oily wool off them. The sheep are hot from being in that darn sun nearly all week.

Just as the day was coming to an end the last sheep was a ram. He was a kicking master, as one of the shearers got a whopper kick right in the nose. The blood was pouring out as dad was rushing around trying to find something to stop it. Mum thought he had concussion so she rushed him to the hospital. He turned out ok and everyone was glad shearing was over and cracked a cold one.
