PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

EDUCATION WEEK - SHARING THE PLANET

Thank you to all of the families who attended our Open Night on Monday. The students thoroughly enjoyed

showing their projects and information about the best ways to help save our planet. Many parents commented

about what they had learnt from the students. The City of Casey session was well attended with over 50 people

and families were able to participate in some recycling activities on the night

FRIENDS OF TULLIALLAN ELMS COMMUNIY GROUP

On Sunday, Mrs Robertson and I met with the Friends of Tulliallan Elms Community Group. Together we are working on two projects with the group. For the first project Miss Webb, Miss Lane and the Tulliallan Green Team students have named all 100 Elm trees. The community group works alongside the City of Casey in caring for the Elms as they are very significant to the area and are heritage listed. We hope to launch the names at a special event later in the year. The second project is that our students have created a logo for the group in their art lessons. The group would love to have more members interested in joining them. You can contact Robyn on 0458 762 960 or by email at [email protected] to join.

ENVISION BASKETBALL - COME AND TRY FREE SESSION ON

SATURDAYS AT 11AM

Kareem from Envision basketball spoke and performed some basketball drills

at assembly this week. If your child is interested in basketball, you have an

opportunity to attend a free session on Saturdays at 11am in the Elm

Stadium.

PARKING AND DANGEROUS DRIVING IS STILL A PROBLEM AROUND OUR SCHOOL

We educate our students to keep as safe as possible when crossing roads and walking to and from school. Last

week there was dangerous driving around Autumn Fields Place and Burford Way that could have resulted in a fatal

injury to one of our students. PLEASE KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE

HOUSE ATHLETICS LAST WEEK

Congratulations to all of the students for a wonderful day competing with good sportsmanship. Well done to

Mitchell House who were victorious. Thanks to Ms Tobin and Miss Dawson for their entire organisation behind the

scenes for a great day for everyone. Thank you to parents who came along to support the students. It was lovey to

see you there.

CHOIR AT ASSEMBLY

Well done to our choir for their performance at assembly. The choir

practises each week with Mrs Moloney and Mr Tong at lunchtime. They

sounded beautiful in two-part harmony.

2020 PREP ENROLMENTS ARE DUE BY 31ST JULY 2019

We require all 2020 Prep enrolment submissions to be returned to school by 31st of July 2019.

We have tours for prospective 2020 Prep parents on Wednesday 12th June and 19th June.

See our school zone online: The Department has released a new website that helps parents identify their local public school online. www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au launched on 24th April and shows every school zone across the state. The new website highlights to parents whether they are in our school zone for enrolment purposes. Before you book a tour, please ensure you are in our school zone.

REMINDER KISS AND GO DROP OFF AND PICK UP

ZONE TO ALLEVIATE PARKING ON WHEELERS

PARK DRIVE

The ‘No Standing’ signs at the front of the school for our ‘Kiss

and Go’ quick drop off and pick are now in place.

Parents can park, stop for 2 minutes to drop off or pick up their

children without leaving the vehicle between 8-9am and 3-4pm.

This strategy is to alleviate parking congestion.

TEACHER AND STUDENT ILLNESS

We have had a number of students and teachers unwell. Please make sure students do not come to school if they

are sick. I encourage everyone to be vigilant with hand washing and hygiene during the flu season.

NO ASSEMBLY FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS

Due to Year 5 camp next week and the Queen’s Birthday holiday on Monday 10th June we will not hold our usual

assembly.

Have a wonderful week

SCHOOL NEWS

‘SHOW YOU CARE, DO YOUR SHARE’

During our Inquiry unit ‘Sharing the Planet’ in Term Two at Tulliallan Primary School, the Year One students have been identifying ways that our personal choices affect and change our environment. We know it is our responsibility to use materials mindfully by recycling, saving water and picking up rubbish. We have made this art piece and posters to encourage and promote sustainability within our local community. We can work together to make a difference!

The board will be on display at Casey Central until Friday.

SHARING THE PLANET – OPEN NIGHT

During Term 2, the Year 6 students have studied Biodiversity whereby they explored the variety of life on Earth. They were introduced to ‘biomes’ through which they discovered how the survival of living things is dependent upon the physical conditions of their environment. Furthermore, the students learned to identify and explain how adaptations aid an organism’s survival. They investigated the natural and man-made threats that can harm our ecosystems, and focused on current issues causing biodiversity decline. On Monday’s Open Night, the students were very proud to present everything they have learned by transforming the Learning Community into different Australian biomes.

COACH APPROACH

On Wednesday the 22nd May, students from Prep to Year Two participated in Coach Approach. Coaches from a

range of sports such as soccer, taekwondo, hip hop dancing and athletics came and introduced students to a range

of new skills. A huge thank you to Jess Tobin for making this day happen; the students had a blast!

HOUSE ATHLETICS DAY

Last Wednesday on the 22nd May, the Year 3-6 students celebrated their annual House Athletics Day. Our students revelled in what was arguably a perfect Melbourne day, participating in the plethora of track and field events that ranged from the discus throws to the 100m sprints. There was even a student-teacher race at the end! Thunderous cheers roared from the stands as students urged each other on and participation was at an all time high. A big congratulations to Mitchell House for lifting the shield as the House Athletics champions of 2019!

WORLD OCEANS DAY FUNDRAISER - FRIDAY 7TH JUNE

On Friday the 7th of June, Tulliallan Primary School will be involved in a whole school fundraiser as part of our World Oceans Day celebration. On World Oceans Day, people around the world celebrate the ocean and work together to protect the marine environment. For a cold coin donation, students will be invited to wear blue or dress as their favourite sea animal. The Marine Ambassadors will also be selling metal straws, with all funds raised going towards the Dolphin Research Institute.

We will also be holding a whole school plastic-free lunch and running activities across the school at lunchtime.

NUDE FOOD INFORMATION SESSION

On Monday the 27th of May, Abbie and Jennifer from the City of Casey presented a Nude Food Information Session

for parents and children at our school. The session involved tips to help prepare nude food lunches, reduce food

waste and minimise excess packaging. Abbie and Jennifer also shared tips to reduce waste, reuse items (such as

old t-shirts for bags) and recycle items correctly at home.

We will be sharing recipes to reduce food waste and tips to reuse items from the City of Casey in coming

newsletters.

TULLIALLANS TOP TIPS FOR NUDE FOOD

At Tulliallan Primary School, students are encouraged to bring Nude Food to school each day. Nude Food is simply

food that has NO single-use plastic, packaging or foil. The best type of Nude Food consists mainly of fresh food such

as fruits and vegetables, so that it is healthy and environmentally friendly.

NUDE TIP 4:

To encourage your child to eat healthy, unpackaged food, ask them to make (or help

make) their own lunch! This will help to avoid uneaten foods being sent to landfill (and

save your family money!). It is also useful to prepare lunches the night before to avoid

the morning rush and tendency to reach for ‘easy’ packaged items.

THE RISE ( AND RESURGENCE ) OF ‘INTERNET CHALLENGES’

Daring to do risky and dangerous activities is not a new phenomenon for teens or even pre-teens. As the Internet continues to infiltrate our lives, it is not surprising that dangerous behaviours and challenges are now being carried out and gaining traction online. These risk-fuelled challenges are being posted or live-streamed and are spreading like wildfire - sometimes with fatal consequences. So how do we stay on top of these online trends and help our children understand the risks?

The truth is, young people are programmed to take risks. Impulse control is still developing in young people’s minds and the reward of their peers’ admiration often outweighs the merits of pragmatism, rules and safety. Rather than worrying about what the next dangerous fad our children could be exposed to, it’s important that we focus on developing their critical reasoning skills — without introducing the idea of any particular “challenge” or risk-taking behaviour. This means encouraging our kids to question what they see online, even if it’s a friend who may be engaging with the risky site and weighing up the potential consequences.

Remembering the trusted adage that, “Just because everyone is doing something, it doesn’t mean you should.” The same platitude applies in the digital context. Help your child understand that participating in dangerous online challenges for ‘likes’ and followers on social media is not worth risking their physical well-being — or their lives.

Advice for parents:

Ask open-ended questions in a non-judgemental way about risk-taking behaviour and use this as an opportunity to talk about the issues. Shoulder-to-shoulder conversations, like when you’re driving in the car together, can make these talks less awkward.

Talk about the fact that sometimes when people are not feeling okay, they may think about hurting themselves. This may put people in danger and has the possibility of causing serious harm.

Ask questions about the games and apps your kids are using and what they are watching online. Some online content can encourage young people to do unsafe things, which may lead to serious harm.

Set age-specific rules around device-use, such as no phones after a particular time. Use parental controls and safeguards on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to. Help your child report and block disturbing content they see on social media sites or apps. Most importantly, let your child know you are there to support them if they are uncomfortable about anything they see online. If they are struggling to open up or in need of further support, there are a range of mental health services that can assist: www.esafety.gov.au/online-wellbeing-hub or contact your family GP for referral to a mental health specialist.

More advice and tips for helping your child stay safer online can be found at www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

SMARTPHONE DONATIONS - CALLING ALL SMARTPHONES

We would greatly appreciate donations of any used or unwanted smartphones that you may have around the

house. It is important to repurpose technology where possible so that it doesn’t negatively impact our environment

and at Tulliallan we would love to repurpose your smartphones to use in our learning! We would like to insert these

Smartphones into some new Virtual Reality Headsets so that we can engage our students in more virtual experienc-

es. This will help students connect with people, places and scenarios that they may not otherwise experience, from

within the safety of our school!

Please put any Smartphone donations and accompanying chargers if you have one, in an envelope addressed to

myself, Dani Ryan, and drop them at the office or ask your child to hand them in to their Home Group teacher to

pass on.

We can’t wait to show you how your smartphones can actively help develop our students and their learning.

Thanks for your support.

your children can bring them to school and put them in one our collection boxes located at the front of the office

and one at the back desk. Collect as many stickers as you can between now and 25th June to go towards new sport-

ing equipment for our school
