Studies show that parents benefit by: Interact with their children more and are thus more sensitive to their emotional and intellectual needs Have more confidence in their parenting abilities Have a better understanding of the teacher’s role and the curriculum Use more positive reinforcement the more they know about developmental stages Are more likely to respond to teachers’ requests for help at home when they stay apprised of what their children are learning Have higher opinions of and feel more committed to their children’s schools Become more active in policy-making at school and in the community However, many parents find it difficult to have a regular way of involving themselves in schools. Parents often ask, “What can I do?” The simple answer is, “Just be visible at school and be a part of school life more than just dropping them off and picking them up.” Volunteering is great way to be involved as you can do as much or as little as you like. If you have ever volunteered, you may have noticed that you felt fantastic afterward. Maybe you saw a little boost in your mood and that you made a difference. Helping others, especially your children, is very rewarding. The benefits of volunteering are countless. But there definitely are social, emotional, physical, and professional perks. Many journals and reports have studied the benefits to volunteering in recent years. They find that volunteering is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the world. It has been shown to build community and improve mental and physical health. Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, low self-esteem, and even Obsessive Compulsive Disorder have all been helped by volunteering. Through volunteering you can learn new skills, gain confidence and gain a sense of purpose. Most of all you can help your children to be happier and more successful.

PRINCIPAL’S SAY

We are at the end of the first term for 2019 which is one of the most important

times of the year to reflect on the start to the year and plan for the next three

terms. This is a time that I would like you to understand the importance of parent

involvement in schools. The benefits of parent and community involvement in schools

has been the subject of findings from many research projects. It is one of the most

important factors in student success at school and later in life. There are many

benefits of parent involvement such as improved attendance, higher levels of

achievement, better social skills, higher self-esteem and improved behaviour. It

has even been shown that it is a key factor on students getting better jobs and having

better health in later life.

Parents also benefit from their involvement. Studies show that parents benefit by:

Interact with their children more and are thus more sensitive to their

emotional and intellectual needs

Have more confidence in their parenting abilities

Have a better understanding of the teacher’s role and the curriculum

Use more positive reinforcement the more they know about developmental

stages

Are more likely to respond to teachers’ requests for help at home when they

stay apprised of what their children are learning

Have higher opinions of and feel more committed to their children’s schools

Become more active in policy-making at school and in the community

However, many parents find it difficult to have a regular way of involving themselves

in schools. Parents often ask, “What can I do?” The simple answer is, “Just be visible

at school and be a part of school life more than just dropping them off and picking

them up.”

Volunteering is great way to be involved as you can do as much or as little as you like.

If you have ever volunteered, you may have noticed that you felt fantastic afterward.

Maybe you saw a little boost in your mood and that you made a difference. Helping

others, especially your children, is very rewarding.

The benefits of volunteering are countless. But there definitely are social, emotional,

physical, and professional perks. Many journals and reports have studied the

benefits to volunteering in recent years. They find that volunteering is one of the

best things you can do for yourself and the world. It has been shown to build

community and improve mental and physical health. Depression, Post-Traumatic

Stress Disorder, low self-esteem, and even Obsessive Compulsive Disorder have all

been helped by volunteering. Through volunteering you can learn new skills, gain

confidence and gain a sense of purpose. Most of all you can help your children to be

happier and more successful.

Parent involvement is estimated to be worth $1000 in extra funding per student per

year (Houtenville & Conway, 2007). Evidence from the international research shows

that parental engagement with the school can improve learning by the equivalent of

six months of school attendance. Students whose parents regularly read and talk to

them scored on average 25 points higher on the international PISA tests. SO WHY

WAIT??? GET INVOLVED WITH THE SCHOOL NOW!!

In this newsletter you will find information on the Tullawong State School P&C

Volunteer Program. We look forward to seeing more parents and community

members in our school throughout the year.

Finally as we leave for our Easter Vacation, please have a wonderful and loving time

with your children. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing you in the new term.

P&C VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Do you have a spare ½ hour once a week?

Want to make a valuable contribution to the Tullawong Community?

Volunteering is not only good for the community, it is good for

you!!!

If you have ever volunteered, you may have noticed that you felt fantastic afterward.

Maybe you saw a little boost in your mood and that you made a difference. The

benefits of volunteering are countless. Many journals and reports have studied the

benefits to volunteering in recent years. They find that volunteering is one of the

best things you can do for yourself and the world. It has been shown to build

community and improve mental and physical health.

If you volunteer at school we will reward you with CREDIT. We can’t do a lot, but we

want to acknowledge your contribution. For every 20hours of volunteering the school

will provide a free coffee for the volunteer and a $10 credit at the tuckshop for your

children.

What can you do?

per semester/once a year

Come in for a working bee or volunteer to help in the grounds once/week, once

Put you name down at the school coffee shop for anything you think you can help us

with. We will love to have you involved.

PREP

What a fantastic end to the term we have had.

SPORTS DAY

It was great to see so many families come and visit the school on Wednesday for this event. After our sprints

on the oval, Prep students came back to 4 different activities in the Prep area. Students participated in Egg

and Spoon races, Sack races, Bean Bag Balance races and an obstacle course. A great deal of fun was had by all.

TOYS AT SCHOOL

Parents please remind students that they are not to bring toys to school. Students get upset if their toys are

lost. Please keep toys at home. Thank you for your support with this matter.

READING OVER THE HOLIDAYS

It is important for students to continue reading over the holidays. It may be a great opportunity to visit the

local libraries (they generally have activities on during the holidays). There are many different things that

parents can do to promote reading.

Create a shopping list and let students read the list, find the items and mark them off

Read sections of the local newspaper

Read the signs you see when in the car

Read a recipe and cook for the family

Read through the toy catalogues

I wish all families a happy and safe Easter break. School resumes on Tuesday 23rd April.

END OF TERM

WOW, how time flies and what a busy term. Many great learning experiences in our upper school including gala

days, sports day, excursions, drama and camp, just to name a few. Over the last couple of weeks classrooms have

been busy completing assessment and enjoying special events including the Celebrations of Learning. It has been

great to see so many from our school community join us to celebrate the great learning happening in our school.

The continued support of our school community is wonderful to see as we work together to educate and create

our wonderful learners.

We hope that everyone has an enjoyable and safe Easter holiday break. First week back after the holidays is a

short one so please remember to check the school calendar for dates.

CAMP

The year 6 camp this week was a huge success and being able to share this experience with our students was a

highlight for me. All staff who were lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend commented on the courage

many students displayed when taking risks and trying new and at sometimes scary activities. Some comments

from those who attended included;

Ms Walker – The food was very good. I loved the way the children all supported each other, regardless of

friendship groups. Thank you to all the parents for trusting us to look after their most precious possession, their

children.

Mr McLoughlin – The instructors were fantastic with the children, very understanding of their needs. The

children were keen to try the many different activities. The food was excellent, better than the cooking of any

wife I’ve ever had and the late nights were appreciated - NOT!

Mrs Ring – The instructors were very encouraging and patient with the children with all but especially so with

those who experienced fear. Seeing the students overcome fears and be willing to give everything a go was

definitely a highlight for me.

Davenick – I like all the activities, my favourite was Possum Pull.

Rhianna – I liked the Possum Pull best. It was fun going up high.

Reagan – My favourite activity was the archery as it was something I’ve never done before and learning how to

do it and hit the target felt exciting. I mostly hit the red and blue.

Kai – My favourite things were the Possum Pull and the food.

Kaleb – I loved the food and Possum Pull. I was expecting the food to be one star but it was definitely a good

fours star. The Possum Pull was great because when you went up you had a great view of the road, lake and the

other students playing archery.

Isabella – My favourite activity was the mid ropes as it was lots of activities rolled into one. I also liked the

abseiling, I was a little scared at first but it was really fun and it pushed you to your limits.

Seth – I liked hanging with my friends and experiencing all the activities.
