THE Orange Social Dance Group began nearly 30 years ago when a group of people who enjoyed dancing, having fun and social- ising decided they would form a club and a committee, with the aim of providing a dance every week. They encouraged anyone interested to join in and realised that teaching people to dance and keeping up with new dances would also be required. The dance group does New Vogue or sequence dancing, which includes Ballroom, Latin and new vogue. You may recall dances such as the Pride of Erin, the Gypsy Tap and the Evening Three Step, well they are sequence dances where all the dancers form a circle as couples and the dance progresses around the circle. They also dance the waltz, foxtrot and quickstep and even the rhumba and jive. Social dancing is just that, dancing for enjoy- ment only, there are no competitions and no exams. The Orange Social Dance group meets every Thursday night at the Orange City Bowling Club where lessons for beginners are offered from 7pm to 8pm. The night continues with social dancing from 8pm to 10pm. Orange Social Dance Group will resume on Thursday, January 16 and the first night for lessons for beginners will be Thursday, February 6. The first night is free and then $5 per person per week, which covers expenses. The group uses music on CDs most nights and generally has live music once a month. People interested in joining would be most welcome to come along and observe or take part. For more information phone Audrey on 6362 0068 or Bruce on 6363 1069. Dancing for fun AT THE Orange Dance Centre, principal Kylie Haigh and teachers Melissa Garnaut, Jen Foley and Emily Goodwin share the vision that all students need to enjoy every aspect of their dance training. “The students absolutely love performing, but it is important their classes at the studio every week are enjoyable experience,” Mrs Haigh says. “If students enjoy coming to class it is far more likely they will continue with their dance classes for many years, something which is a key factor in devel- oping good deportment as well as dance skills.” Students are offered a variety of dance styles from jazz to tap, modern, contemporary, hip hop, classical ballet and stretching and limbering. As well, a service for wedding couples is offered to teach their wedding dance in the lead up to the big day. Students of the Orange Dance Centre have many opportunities throughout the year to perform and always take part in the City of Orange Eisteddfod. Girls and boys can start classes from the age of three right through to adults. Indeed the adult classes, held in the evenings, have remained very strong at the Orange Dance Centre over several years, with class members enjoying enor- mously the social aspect of dancing for fun.
