“Plane” English!

Written by: Tony Quattrochi, Faculty Member

Kelly Schreiber, Class of 2009, Class Valedictorian and Westchester resident, is taking a decidedly different path from that of the traditional aspiring teacher. Whereas most students drive to a local public school for their student teaching, Kelly Schreiber and one of her classmates from Lewis University will be on a plane to Rio de Janeiro in January to teach at Our Lady of Mercy (OLM), an American Catholic School, for the second semester.

“We're in the Botofogo neighborhood, just north of Copacabana,” shared Kelly. “We'll share a villa near the school with two other student teachers from another university.”

It did not take much convincing to interest Kelly in this unique experience. “It's an amazing opportunity! OLM really wants student teachers to come down there, so they are paying our airfare,

giving us a place to stay, and giving us a food allowance. I only have to pay for my paperwork, my vaccinations, and whatever spending money I want to bring. The students speak English, so I don't need to be fluent in Portuguese, but I am trying to learn as much of it as I can for when we're out and about around the city.”

Kelly, who is majoring in English and Secondary Education at Lewis University, is also active in the University’s Peer Ministry program, Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society, and is part of the leadership team for the fall semester Koinonia retreat. When in town, Kelly works for the Westchester Park District. She is a pool manager during the summer and she works special events throughout the year. Kelly, the Chargers are proud of you. Boa sorte! (Good luck in Portuguese)!
