FASIG-TIPTON KY OCTOBER YEARLINGS

DAY ONE OF F-T OCTOBER SHOWS CONTINUED MARKET STRENGTHBy Lauren Gasht @BH_LGash

The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale kicked

off Oct. 25 after an hour delay due to storms, but the day still concluded with "no surprises" and encouraging results for the first of four days of selling.

From 396 yearlings cataloged for the opening session, Fasig-Tipton reported 274 horses sold for gross receipts of $11,016,900 compared to 2020 receipts of $8,393,800 for the 240 horses sold on Day 1. An average price of $40,208 was achieved to represent an increase of 18.7%, and the median price for a horse sold increased to $17,000. An RNA rate of 19.6% represents the 67 horses that failed to meet their reserve. In 2020 the opening session RNA rate was 22.3% for the 71 horses that went unsold.

The cold, windy, wet weather did not keep buyers from being active on the grounds, which had a deep buying bench with some new faces not seen at some of the yearling sales earlier in the season.

"We are very pleased with the opening session of the October sale, no real surprises, there was a lot of demand. We continued to see the strength today that we have

seen at the yearling sales all year, hopefully from start to finish," said Fasig-Tipton president and CEO Boyd Browning Jr.

"There was activity at all levels, people were complaining about the parking lot being packed, and the back ring felt like November (in terms of the crowd). There was spirited bidding at all levels with a diverse crowd here buying. An excellent opening session."

The session topper came early in the Tapit colt consigned as Hip 22 by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent. Donato Lanni landed the final bid

of $700,000 to secure the colt for "The Avengers," comprised of SF/Starlight/Madaket Stables. Out of the stakes-winning mare March X Press, he was bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock and Henry Field Bloodstock.

The Kentucky-based Lanni, who has found the catalog better than in previous years, said, "Some horses need a little more time to mature and develop, and maybe the earlier sales weren't quite the place for them, and this sale is a good place for them."

"It's kind of an interesting sale that you can have a lot of relatively cheaper horses, and you can still have some kind of Book 1 RNAs as well, so it's always that kind of strange combination of horses … You can't hide a good horse," consignor Neal Clarke of Bedouin Bloodstock said. "If you got a nice one, they (the buyers) will find it. These buyers are professional, good, and they work hard."

The day's second-highest price of $350,000 was paid by John Fort, owner of Peachtree Racing, for a colt from the first crop of Triple Crown winner Justify. Consigned by breeder Blue Heaven Farm as Hip 21, the colt is out of Maple Forest, a homebred stakes-placed mare for the local nursery.

"Consignors are feeling confident, resulting in fewer scratches," Browning said. "Based on where the market is right now, buyers are feeling more confident with less pre-sale vetting and reading reports in the back ring."

Consignor Paramount Sales, who sold 24 of their 27 on offer in the first session, found the day's outcome positive and continued what they have experienced for most of the 2021 yearling season.

"I think we see the same sort of strength that we saw in September. We are coming up here with horses with little or no vet work and getting them sold. Reason by our reserves, it's a healthy market," Leslie Campion, account manager for Paramount Sales, said. "One of the horses we sold today for $100,000, we couldn't get $40,000 at September, so it's a nice surprise. There is great depth to the market."

Stalwart consignor Machmer Hall's Carrie Brogden found the day to be reflective of the fall sale.

"It's more of a stock market. It's a typical Fasig-Tipton October Sale … the big gun horses, the buyers are here for the ones that jump through the hoops. It's a normal market, and I hope all the people making stud fees are paying attention," Brogden said. "It's not like September, but there is a lot of horse trade here. It is

possible people are coming out of earlier sales with a little stronger reserves than they should."

The sale continues Tuesday and runs through Oct. 28, with sessions beginning at 10 a.m. ET daily.

"We have quality horses to sell over the next three days, and we are looking forward to proceeding on," commented Browning. BH

ESSENTIAL QUALITY, MAXFIELD TO ENTER STUD IN 2022By BloodHorse Staff

After their final starts North American champion and classic winner Essential Quality and grade 1

winner Maxfied will join the Darley Stallion roster at Jonabell, the farm announced Oct. 25.

"To have both Essential Quality and Maxfield coming to Jonabell is as exciting as it gets. And to have accomplished what they did as homebreds in the colors of Godolphin makes it even that much more meaningful," said Darley sales manager Darren Fox. "They consistently performed at the highest level and if you add in their outstanding pedigrees and conformation, we feel very confident that their legacy will continue to grow through their future offspring."

Essential Quality is a son of Tapit out of a grade 3-placed half sister to champion and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Folklore. He has won eight of nine career starts—four at the grade 1 level—and was named champion 2-year-old male for 2020 following victories in the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) and Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1).

At 3 his victories include the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) and he became the first Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner to capture the Belmont. He went on to win the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, joining Street Sense as the only champion 2-year-olds in the past 30 years to take the

"Midsummer Derby." A grade 1 winner at 1 1/16 miles, 1 1/4 miles and 1 1/2 miles, Essential Quality also lists three other graded victories to his credit: the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2), Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), and the Southwest Stakes (G3). He was beaten only a length when fourth in this year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). His fee will be set following the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

Maxfield won the 2019 Breeders' Futurity and his six other career victories include the Stephen Foster Stakes (G2) and Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet (G2) at Churchill Downs. He has two additional 2021 grade 1 placings, finishing as runner-up in Saratoga's Whitney Stakes (G1) and the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.

A son of Darley stallion Street Sense, Maxfield is out of the Bernardini mare Velvety, a half sister to grade 1 winner and successful sire Sky Mesa. Like Essential Quality, Maxfield's fee will be set following his final race, the Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1) Nov. 26 at Churchill.

Fox continued, "In addition to the excitement of two new stallions, we are hearing from breeders a great deal of optimism especially with the strong sales results this year. It goes without saying that times were tough for the industry last year but ours is a resilient bunch and hope springs eternal for the coming year. All that said, we are still maintaining moderation when setting our fees with only one of our top-tier stallions returning from last year seeing an uptick in price at this time."

Darley Stallions also announced its fees and roster for 2022, topped by consistently prominent sire Medaglia d'Oro, who will stand at a fee of $100,000. He was leading active North America sire by yearling average in 2020 at $483,885. With 81 grade/group winners worldwide—26 at the highest level—Medaglia d'Oro's top-tier performers in 2021 include Golden Sixty, who is the 2020-21 Hong Kong Horse of the Year. Medaglia d'Oro is also the all-time leading sire of stakes winners at Saratoga and of grade 1 winners at Del Mar.

Street Sense's fee will be set at $75,000 for 2022. In addition to his soon-to-be-retired son Maxfield, Street Sense's 2021 top performers also include San Vicente Stakes (G2) winner Concert Tour and Mother Goose Stakes (G2) heroine Zaajel. Since 2017, Only Into Mischief and Constitution can match his four graded stakes-winning juvenile dirt colts, a group that includes his four-time grade 1 winning son McKinzie. The auction year has been strong in 2021 for Street Sense as well. His yearlings averaged over $200,000 and he is only one of 11 North American sires this year to be represented by a million-dollar yearling.

Nyquist, 2020's leading first-crop sire, will stand for a fee of $55,000 in 2022. His juveniles of last year included Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Vequist and Summer Stakes (G1) winner Gretzky the Great. Not since Danzig in the 1980s has a stallion had two grade 1 winners so early in his career.

In 2021, his 2-year-old daughter Sequist has the potential to give her sire a second consecutive Juvenile Fillies win as she is headed to this year's renewal following a third in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1) in her last start. He is the cumulative leading second-crop sire by earnings, grade 1 winners, grade 1 horses, and graded stakes performers. In the sales ring, he is the fourth-leading sire by 2-year-old average at $342,043. His $2.6 million colt sold at Fasig-Tipton's The Gulfstream Sale is the highest amount paid for any juvenile this year and is equal to a yearling by Into Mischief as the highest price paid for any horse at public auction in 2021.

Hard Spun's fee will remain at $35,000 for 2022. He will be represented in the Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) by his son Silver State, winner of this year's Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap (G1) and Oaklawn Handicap (G2). His other top 2021 runners include Arkansas Derby (G1) runner-up Caddo River and grade 3 winner Antoinette among 15 black- type horses for this year.

Frosted, the record-breaking Met Mile winner, is priced at $20,000. Ranked third behind Nyquist on the cumulative second-crop sire list, Frosted's top performers this year include Travel Column, winner of the Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). She is one of five 3-year-olds to run a 90+ Beyer in 2021 for her sire.

Astern and Midshipman will go into 2022 priced at $10,000 each.

Midshipman is having his best year ever and has two Breeders' Cup prospects in grade 2 winner

Special Reserve, headed to the Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), and undefeated 2-year-old filly Averly Jane, who is pointing towards the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1T). Midshipman is represented by 11 stakes winners in America this year, a career high, that includes Californian Stakes (G2) winner Royal Ship and grade 3 winner Naval Laughter.

Medaglia d'Oro's grade 1-winning son Astern, who

shuttles from Australia, is off to a fast start with eight first-crop winners this year. His daughter Sail By will be making her next start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) following an impressive win in the Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) at Belmont. BH

QUALITY ROAD LEADS LANE'S END ROSTER 2022By Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Commercial yearling sale juggernaut Quality Road leads the Lane's End stallion roster for 2022 with

a $150,000 fee, unchanged from this season. The 15-year-old son of Elusive Quality is the

leading North American sire by yearling average at a robust $500,610 from 41 sold out of 53 offered. The stallion was represented by three seven-figure sales yearlings and 23 for $500,000 or more, which included a top-selling $1.6 million colt out of Catch the Moon that Eaton Sales sold on behalf of Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings to Woodford Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds during the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

At the racetrack, Quality Road's runners have put him in the top 10 among active North American sires by number of lifetime grade 1 winners; he has 12 alongside More Than Ready and Ghostzapper. He is the sire of 51 black-type winners among 100 black-type performers and his career progeny earnings exceed $60.8 million.

Next-highest on the roster is the prominent sire Candy Ride, who is just one shy of reaching his 100th black-type winner. The son of Ride the Rails is the fifth-leading active North American sire by number of career grade/group 1 winners with 17. He is also

the sire of seven champions, including 2017 Horse of the Year and champion dirt male Gun Runner, who is making a name for himself this year as the leading freshman sire by progeny earnings, by number of black-type winners, and number of graded stakes winners. Candy Ride will stand for $75,000.

Candy Ride's son Twirling Candy has been gradually climbing the North American sire ranks and this year has cracked the top 10 with eight stakes winners that include three graded stakes winners, one of whom is Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Rombauer. Overall, Twirling Candy has a deep bench of performers that make him the fourth-leading sire this year by winners

with 134. He will stand next year for $60,000, up from $40,000 for 2021.

The yearling sales gave a boost to four-time grade 1 winner City of Light, whose first yearlings this year averaged $351,825. The son of Quality Road was represented by two seven-figure purchases, a $1.7 million colt out of Anchorage and a $1.05 million colt out of Ghostslayer, who both sold at the Keeneland September sale. Such strong returns moved his stud fee to $60,000 for next year, up from $40,000 for 2021.

A stud fee for second-ranked freshman sire Connect is pending the outcome of the Breeders' Cup World

Championships, where he'll be represented by two viable contenders. His son Rattle N Roll will contest the TVG Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) where he could capture his second grade 1 victory. Rattle N Roll comes into the Breeders' Cup World Championship off a win in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland. Connect's daughter Hidden Connection is expected to start

in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles (G1). She previously won the Pochontas Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs.

The 2022 fee for Liam's Map has been tentatively set at $40,000 but that could change as well. He is expected to be represented in the Juvenile Fillies by Juju's Map, who come into the World Championships off a win the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1).

New to Lane's End's roster is W.S. Farish's homebred and multiple grade 1 winner Code of Honor. Earning almost $3 million in a career that included graded stakes performances each year from 2 to 5, the son of Noble Mission is a six-time graded stakes winner. He looks to add to his already impressive résumé this weekend in the Oct. 30 Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. BH

REPORT OF MARES BRED INDICATES STEADY ACTIVITY IN 2021By Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Based on Report of Mares Bred statistics released Oct. 25 by The Jockey Club, there was little

difference in the number of mares covered in 2021 compared with this point last year.

Based on reports received through Oct. 18, The Jockey Club Report of Mares Bred says 27,829 mares have been covered in North America in 2021. Compared with last year that figure is steady—down less than 1% from the 27,970 mares reported covered through Oct. 18, 2020.

Following the recent trend, those mares were covered by fewer stallions. Again based on reports through Oct. 18, the RMB said 1,016 stallions covered mares in 2021, down 4.8% compared with the 1,067 in last year's report through Oct. 18, 2020.

As final reports come in, The Jockey Club estimates an additional 2,500 to 3,500 mares will be reported as bred during the 2021 breeding season.

Twelve stallions bred more than 200 mares during the 2021 season led by Spendthrift Farm's Goldencents, a son of the farm's leading sire Into Mischief and a top 20 sire this year by progeny earnings.

Goldencents bred 230 mares this year, which was a 13% increase from his 2020 book of 204 mares. The stallion is North America's leading fourth-crop sire by progeny earnings ($6.8 million), by number of winners (130), number of black-type winners (six), and by number of black-type performers (18). By cumulative results, he is the leaders of his sire class by winners (216), black-type performers (37), and tied with Airdrie Stud's Cairo Prince by career graded/group stakes winners at five.

Spendthrift stands six of the stallions that bred 200 or more mares this year. The others include first-year sires Authentic (229) and Vekoma (222) along with Omaha Beach (215), two-time leading sire Into Mischief (214), and Mitole (208).

Which Thoroughbred racehorse holds the world record for most consecutive victories??

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 20 OF 42TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2021

Ashford Stud stands four in the top 12 sires by mares bred: Practical Joke (223), Munnings (217), American Pharoah (204), and Mo Town (204). Ashford's Uncle Mo, who topped the mares bred list in 2020 at 262 mares, bred 189 mares this year.

Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa has one sire, Maclean's Music, among the top 12 with 221 mares bred, and Gainesway has one, McKinzie, who bred 214 mares.

The number of North American stallions breeding 100 or mares fell this year, from 90 to 78, while the number of stallions breeding 200 or more was unchanged from 2020.

RMB statistics for all reported stallions in 2021 are available through the Fact Book section of The Jockey Club's website at jockeyclub.com.

Kentucky traditionally leads North America in Thoroughbred breeding activity. During 2021, Kentucky's 200 reported stallions covered 16,727 mares, or 60.1% of all mares reported bred in North America. The number of mares bred to Kentucky stallions increased 2% percent compared with the 16,391 reported at this time last year.

Of the top 10 states and provinces by number of mares reported bred in 2021, stallions in Kentucky, California, Ontario, and Indiana covered more mares in 2021 than in 2020 (as reported at this time last year).

The following table shows the top 10 states and provinces ranked by number of mares reported bred in 2021:

Note: Each incident in which a mare was bred to more than one stallion and appeared on multiple RMBs is

counted separately. As such, mares bred totals listed in the table above may differ slightly from counts of distinct mares bred.

In addition, RMB information on stallions that bred mares in North America is available through report 36P or a subscription service at equineline.com/ReportOfMaresBred. BH

'AVENGERS' SECURE TAPIT COLT FOR $700K AT F-T OCTOBERBy Christine Osert @BH_COser

The session topper came early during the Oct. 25 first session of the Fasig-Tipton

Kentucky October Yearlings Sale as agent Donato Lanni secured a Tapit colt for "The Avengers" syndicate at $700,000.

The colt, consigned as Hip 22 by Bedouin Bloodstock, is the first foal out of March X Press, a 6-year-old Shanghai Bobby mare who won the 2017 Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The colt was bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock and Henry Field Bloodstock. SF Bloodstock stayed in on the colt with partners Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables joining the ownership group.

"He just checked every box. He had that fast look about him, by Tapit," Lanni said. "He looked really fast, he looked early, he looked sound—just the kind of horse that's going to fit our program.

"There was a lot of competition there. He was a horse that stood out at this sale."

Lanni noted the yearling would be broke by Eddie Woods in Ocala, Fla., before joining Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's stable in Southern California.

Hip 22 was originally scheduled for The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in New York, but was redirected to

the October sale, Bedouin Bloodstock's Neal Clarke said."We were supposed to take him up to Saratoga and

about two weeks before the sale he tangled with the fence, so that put him out of Saratoga and this was the next likely option for him," Clarke said. "We're tickled. He went down very well here, people loved him, and he sold well.

"We had fairly modest expectations but we loved the horse the whole way along. We really had planned for him to be in Saratoga, we thought that was where he needed to be. We were obviously a little nervous coming in here, it's a different sale, but it's been wonderful and it seemed like it's a continuation of what happened in September."

March X Press was bought for $330,000 by Newgate Farm, with SF Bloodstock listed as agent, from ELiTE's consignment to the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The mare was carrying the Tapit colt at the time. She is out of the stakes-placed Indian Rush (Indian Charlie), who also produced stakes winner Harlan's Honor, the dam of stakes-placed Song River. March X Press was reported bred to Quality Road for 2022. BH

JUSTIFY COLT SELLS FOR $350K TO OPEN F-T OCTOBERBy Lauren Gasht @BH_LGash

After the Kentucky-based nursery, Blue Heaven Farm, walked Hip 21 by Justify through the ring

at the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale Oct. 25, John Fort of Peachtree Racing went to $350,000 to secure the colt out of the Blue Heaven bred stakes-winning mare Maple Forest.

"He (Hip 21) has a little bit more substance and a hind-end engine than some of the other Justify's, we've been told. The mare was precocious, a winner at 2-years-old at Saratoga," Adam Corndorf, president of Blue Heaven Farm, said. "I saw that John Fort bought him—he's had a lot of success over the years, so we trust that he'll put him in the right hands and give him a good shot."

The Forestry mare Maple Forest also produced the multiple-graded stakes placed Heartwood. The hard-knocking son of Tapit ran 33 times and earned nearly $500,000 on the track. Heartwood sold as a weanling at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale for $500,000 to Bridlewood Farm and Three Chimneys Farm.

Her 2015 filly, Luzmimi Princess, by Malibu Moon, was stakes placed as a 2- and 3-year-old for trainer Brendan Walsh. Most recently, she was sold in foal to American Pharoah at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale to Dixiana Farms for $375,000.

Corndorf of Blue Heaven Farm was on hand to watch Hip 21 change hands, saying, "He's a special horse. We

haven't been in this business too long, but it's nice to start seeing our third-generation horses. Maple Forest, being our first homebred stakes winner, she won several stakes with Todd Pletcher. A wonderful mare for us, she's sold several nice sales yearlings, and a couple of them have already earned some black type, so hopefully, this one will as well."

The chestnut colt was supposed to be offered at the Keeneland September Sale, but an untimely paddock incident kept him from going under the hammer.

"He had a little paddock accident about a week before the sale in September, and we were lucky that there was still another sale to target afterward," Corndorf said. "He just needed a couple of extra weeks, and it worked out well. He stood out nicely here, and the extra time, I think, never hurts any of the horses."

Blue Heaven Farm experienced early success when they acquired Starship Jubilee as a 5-year-old grade 2 winner on the turf. The Florida-bred proceeded to clinch a top level victory for her new owners in the E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine in 2019 in addition to defeating male

rivals in the 2020 Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1T). Starship Jubilee accumulated $2,093,069 in earnings in her 39-start career.

"We bought her as a broodmare prospect, but then the trainer, Kevin (Attard), thought that she still had

some good races left in her and ended up keeping her for two years," said Corndorf.

"A dream come true, our once-in-a-lifetime horse. Starship Jubilee is great … she's in foal to Medaglia d'Oro and living the good life out in the field. She has a place with us forever, and we look forward to hopefully keeping some daughters out of her down the road as well."

Blue Heaven Farm came into the sale this week being three-for-three at the yearling sales in 2021, with an average price of $230,000 for each head sold. For the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale they brought three prospects. Hip 161, a Street Sense colt out of Not Taken, failed to meet his reserve Oct. 25. Corndorff will send Hip 1481, a filly by Shackleford out of Key Is to Win, through the ring Thursday.

"We have a small operation, about 15 mares, so we produce about 10-12 horses a year and sell them at the sales. We just hope to keep building and building," said Corndorf. "We'd love to get to a point down the road where we can keep a couple of the nice fillies, but right now, we're sales-focused, trying to sell everything. But one thing or another, we usually end up keeping one or two because of a vet issue or just a bad-timing type thing." BH

HALF BROTHER TO EIGHT RINGS GOES TO REDWINGS FOR $235KBy Christine Osert @BH_COser

Ciaran Dunne struck at $235,000 for the Union Rags half brother to grade 1 winner Eight Rings

at the Oct. 25 opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale. He signed the ticket for Redwings, the pinhooking partnership led by him and Paul Reddam.

The colt was consigned as Hip 266 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. He was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt out of graded stakes winner Purely Hot (Pure Prize).

"He's a half brother to a good horse and by a proper stallion," Dunne said. "You got to take a shot somewhere so we took a shot here.

"Based on what happened earlier in the year, and there were a lot of orders unfilled—ours included—you knew people were going to come in here and be aggressive. It seems like the ones that people want bring way more money that you anticipate."

Eight Rings won the 2019 American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park and was second beaten a neck

in this summer's Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar. Earlier this month Eight Rings romped by four lengths in an allowance optional claimer at Santa Anita.

Purely Hot was purchased for $1.2 million by Hugo Merry Bloodstock out of Taylor Made's consignment to the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale while carrying the colt in utero. An earner of $426,905, her biggest win on the track came in the 2014 Whimsical Stakes (G3) on the synthetic track at Woodbine. She was also a stakes winner and grade 2-placed on the synthetic surface at Presque Isle Downs. Her granddam is Barbara Fritchie Handicap (G2) winner Wood So.

Taylor Made also consigned Eight Rings to the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where the colt was purchased by SF Bloodstock and Starlight West for $520,000.

After the sale of the yearling colt Monday, Taylor Made's Alex Payne said, "It was just a really nice horse. He just had a big walk and people got on him. He was just an athletic mover and he stood out in our consignment and he sold well.

"We thought (the price) was great. We put him in there at a fair price and we just let the market take it and the market took it to where he sold at $235,000, so we

thought that was very good."Purely Hot delivered a Justify colt this

year and was reported bred to Into Mischief for 2022. BH

There are only a few more Thoroughbred sales before the end of the year, and the Fasig-Tipton

Kentucky October Sale is one of the last auctions on the calendar. With more than 1,500 horses cataloged, the beautiful autumn atmosphere brings a joyous ending to another year of selling for both consignors and buyers alike.

With a draft of 38 entries cataloged, consignor Stuart Morris looks to round out his successful year with new homes for each and every one of his offered yearlings.

"I have, what I feel like and from comments of some lookers so far, is a substantial and quality group of horses on the shank. I have a lot of very nice horses," Stuart Morris said.

Morris continued, "The market has certainly been hungry for quality animals and athletes, and I think it's lending itself to where pedigree has less influence on final purchase price than the physique and athleticism of the animal. That wheelhouse spins very well to me and my clientele base as a group. We're looking for an excellent sale, having a high clearance rate, and getting almost, if not all of them sold, and we'll go on."

One of the many yearlings under Morris's consignment is colt by Brody's Cause consigned as Hip 432. The bay colt was previously purchased from Fasig-Tipton in February for $45,000 by Emerald Farm. He is out of Sh Sh Shakin', a mare who is part of the University of Kentucky's breeding program at UK Maine Chance Farm.

Dr. Laurie Lawrence of the UK program stated, "This colt is by Brody's Cause who had some nice 2-year-olds emerging in the late fall of 2020. In addition, he was bred on the same cross as Sh Sh Shakin's first stakes winner, Chattel. Both Chattel's sire, Giant Oak, and Brody's Cause are sons of Giant's Causeway, so we thought he would catalog well. Max Hodge from Fasig-Tipton came over and looked at our weanlings in November. Even though the colt was a

late foal, Max thought he was nice and recommended February, so that is what we did."

Morris also felt the colt was nice and described him as 'well-made with great conformation.'

"He has an elite attitude and outlook on life. An immense amount of class falls off him. He is very athletic with good bones and good feet. Just overall a very high-quality individual," Morris added.

FASIG-TIPTON KY OCTOBER YEARLINGS

The colt is a half brother to undefeated stakes winner Averly Jane (by Midshipman), who is a candidate for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) at Del Mar for owners Hat Creek Racing. The filly sold for $35,000 to Newt Dobbs at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale.

"It's always good when you have a sibling that is a 'Win and You're In' Breeders' Cup horse. That's never a bad thing. I remember when my friend purchased the horse, he said, 'There's a filly (Averly Jane) with Wesley (Ward) that's supposed to be okay; it's his sister.' We obviously could never have planned or designed that she would become what she has become. Still, surely it has been a very fortuitous benefit for my client," Morris said.

Lawrence said the two siblings were fairly comparable."I think they were pretty similar, both correct and

athletic," Lawrence said. "As weanlings, I think (Hip 432) was maybe a little more muscular than (Averly Jane) was at the same stage. However, in general, all the foals from Sh Sh Shakin' have been attractive. We will be excited to see him at the Stuart Morris consignment and wish his connections the best possible luck at the sale!"

The catalog update 'half brother to grade 2 Indian Summer Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select winner Averly Jane' comes just in time before Hip 432 enters the sales ring Tuesday.

The colt is being sold by Emerald Farm, a Morris client whom he describes as "outstanding folks." Morris has worked with Emerald Farm since he went out on his own and noted he also did business with them while he worked for Dapple Stud.

"It's an international outfit, and they work hard and are very savvy with their buying. There's one

principal, head of the whole situation, and he is very good at what he does and has been good at it for a long time. I feel very fortunate to work for these guys. I couldn't be happier with the opportunity to continue that relationship, and certainly, this horse indicates a successful venture hopefully into the marketplace on Tuesday".

Described by Lawrence as a "friendly and adaptable foal," Hip 432 will be selling in the second session Oct. 26 at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, which starts at 10 a.m. ET. BH

FASIG-TIPTON KY OCTOBER YEARLINGS

TOP INTERNATIONAL PEDIGREES IN F-T NOVEMBER SUPPLEMENTSBy BloodHorse Staff

Fasig-Tipton has added three more supplemental entries

to its upcoming November Sale. All three entries will be consigned by Denali Stud, agent for the Estate of Michael Baum.

The first is Bye Bye Baby (Hip 268), a young daughter of Galileo who was a group stakes winner at 3 and classic placed in the Investec Oaks (G1) at Epsom. She was also a stakes winner and group stakes placed at 2. She is a full sister to four stakes winners, three of which are group stakes winners and include 2020 Investec Derby (G1) winner Serpentine. Her dam, Remember When (Danehill Dancer), who also placed in the Epsom Oaks, is a half sister to European champions Dylan Thomas and Queen's Logic. Bye Bye Baby is in foal to Tapit, North America's all-time leading sire by progeny earnings.

Following Bye Bye Baby through the ring will be the mare's weanling colt by War Front (Hip 269), her second foal. War Front, already the sire of eight champions and 23 grade/group 1 winners, has crossed well with Galileo mares. That cross has produced grade/group 1 winners U S Navy Flag, who took the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (G1) and Darley Dewhurst Stakes (G1) at 2 before adding the Darley July Cup (G1) at 3; Fog of War, winner of the Summer Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine; and Roly Poly, who at 3 captured the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (G1), Prix Rothschild (G1), and Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (G1).

The third addition is Ivyetsu (Hip 270), a daughter of Tapit who was a winner at 2 and graded stakes placed at 3, narrowly beaten in the 2020 Sweetest Chant Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park by winner Cheermeister and Micheline. She is a half sister to French group stakes winner Last Kingdom and to the dam of Dubai Honour, a multiple group stakes winner in France this year. Most recently, Dubai Hounour finished second in the QIPCO Champion Stakes (G1) at Ascot. Ivyetsu, a 4-year-old filly, is cataloged as a broodmare prospect.

These entries may now be viewed online and will also be available in the equineline sales catalog app. Printed versions of the supplemental catalog will be available on the sales grounds at sale time.

The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's marquee breeding stock sale at its Newtown Paddocks facility in Lexington, will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 9 and begins at 2 p.m. ET. BH

NYRA ASKS JUDGE TO DENY CHANGES IN BAFFERT'S COMPLAINTBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

Attorneys for the New York Racing Association filed an Oct. 25 response

asking United States District Court Judge Carol Bagley Amon to reject Bob Baffert's Oct. 21 request to amend his complaint challenging the NYRA's ongoing administrative proceeding against him.

NYRA's response listed several reasons for Judge Bagley Amon to deny Baffert's request, starting with a claim that it is not the appropriate vehicle for the Hall of Fame trainer to challenge NYRA's Jan. 24 hearing, which has not yet resulted in any suspension of Baffert.

"As this Court acknowledged during oral argument on Plaintiff's unsuccessful motion to hold NYRA in contempt (on Oct. 5 before Judge Bagley Amon), the administrative proceeding 'is a whole new proceeding' for which Plaintiff may, upon its completion, seek judicial review in New York State court," NYRA attorneys said in the letter. "The Court should deny plaintiff's proposed motion to amend on this ground alone."

NYRA's letter also stated the abstention doctrine set forth in Younger v. Harris and its progeny preclude

the adjudication in federal court of any new '1983' claim (a civil rights lawsuit) challenging NYRA's ongoing administrative proceedings. NYRA also argued that the due process challenges Baffert seeks to raise are meritless, and speculation that NYRA created its Hearing Rules and Procedures to target him "is misguided" since it is following the same rules and procedures in scheduling a March 1 disciplinary hearing for trainer Marcus Vitali.

Judge Bagley Amon will hear arguments from both sides Nov. 16 before delivering a ruling. BH

HOCHUL VETOES MEASURE TO END NY JOCKEY COUPLING RULEBy Tom Precious

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Oct. 25 vetoed a measure to end a wagering rule in New York State

that put up a roadblock to married jockeys riding in the same race which became an issue highlighted earlier this year by jockeys Trevor McCarthy and Katie Davis.

While legislative sponsors called the rule "sexist and outdated,'' Hochul nixed the change to the state's gaming commission's rules that compelled horses ridden or trained by spouses to be coupled for the purposes of wagering.

The Democratic governor said the state's current and predecessor agency has had the rule in place for more than 35 years, and that tracks required such measures on their own long before that.

"The rule applies neutrally to all jockeys, without regard to gender, and is intended to enhance the wagering public's confidence in the integrity of a race,'' Hochul said in a veto message Monday night.

"Coupling of entries does not prevent related parties from participating in a race; rather, coupling of entries merely aggregates those related parties into a single betting interest in the race,'' she added.

The governor said that despite her veto, she is directing the state gaming commission to review the

"continued need for mandatory coupling and the circumstances under which such a requirement might be relaxed" and to seek further input from the racing industry and public.

Davis and McCarthy highlighted the New York rule after moving from Maryland earlier this year to race at Aqueduct Racetrack. They had just gotten married. It meant the horses they rode in the same race would have to be coupled for wagering purposes.

The rule, according to the bill sponsors who crafted the change, required that horses trained or ridden by a spouse, parent, or member of a jockey's household had to be coupled if they ran in the same race. The same rule didn't apply, for instance, to brothers racing against each other.

The legislation, which passed unanimously earlier this year, was sponsored by Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, a Democrat who represents Saratoga, and Sen. Joseph Addabbo, a Queens Democrat who chairs the Senate racing, gaming, and wagering committee.

The veto keeps alive the coupled entries' rule. The vetoed legislation would have required, without specifics, that tracks would have had to still take "such actions as are necessary to inform the public adequately with regard to the relationship between any such jockey or trainer." It did not specifically say what those steps must be. BH

DONOHOE SIGNS TICKET FOR COOLMORE'S HOROSCOPEBy James Thomas/Racing Post

High international demand fueled a strong opening session of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in

Training Sale in Newmarket Oct. 25, with interest from around the globe resulting in a slew of big prices.

Coolmore's classy Horoscope was the most sought after offering, with the son of No Nay Never knocked down to Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland at 325,000 guineas (US$670,912).

The 3-year-old made 12 starts for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners, having been plucked from Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale by Charlie Gordon-Watson Bloodstock at 300,000 guineas ($384,906).

The highlight of his career to date came when winning the listed M.D. O' Shea & Sons Vincent O'Brien Ruby Stakes, while he achieved a peak rating of 110 for his third in the Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile Solonaway Stakes (G2) on his penultimate outing. Like many of the horses sold during the opening session, Horoscope is set to continue his racing days in the Middle East.

"He's been bought for a Middle Eastern client," said Donohoe. "With a rating of 110 he's able to compete in all those top-level events in all the Emirati countries. He'll go on the quick ground out there, he's versatile, he's a good-looking horse and has the pedigree to be a stallion further down the road."

Horoscope is out of Inca Wood, a Timber Country sibling to four black-type performers, including group 1-placed runners Furner's Green and Lady Lupus, while another half sister, Palace, is the dam of Innisfree and High Definition.

Earlier in the session Donohoe also went to 200,000gns for I Am Magic, a winning son of Magician who was last seen finishing third to Glounthaune in the Oct. 16 Richmond Homes Killavullan Stakes (G3) for Michael O'Callaghan.

"He's been bought for a client from the Middle East and the immediate plan is he'll go to the Saudi Derby," said Donohoe, who relegated Barry Lynch to the role of frustrated underbidder.

"He should get into the race off that rating and there's a future for him as a 3-year-old after that. I thought he was a very good physical, he's got plenty of size, vetted well and he looks like a horse who'll be better next year. We liked his last run and he's got some good form in the book."

I Am Magic is out of the winning Acclamation mare Miss Frangipane, making him a half brother to two black-type performers, namely Secret Sharp, a listed scorer in Italy, and Mordimi, a listed-placed son of Morpheus.

Monday's transaction continued I Am Magic's upward trajectory in the sales ring, as he first fetched 14,000 guineas ($19,485) from Aguiar Bloodstock at the Ascot Yearling Sale, before O'Callaghan bought the colt for 95,000 guineas ($139,080) at the Guineas Breeze-Up Sale.

"I saw him breeze and I've seen him run a few times back in Ireland, I was at Leopardstown when he ran last week so I've been following him," said Donohoe. "Michael recommended him and he's sold a few good ones in the past."

Horoscope headed a market that generated aggregate sales of 7,126,000 guineas ($14,711,698), a punchy 72% year-on-year increase.

There was a similarly hefty gain made by the median, which was up 78% to 16,000 guineas ($33,040), while the average rose by 60% to 27,095 guineas ($55,956). The clearance rate was 88% as 263 of 299 offered lots found a buyer.

Shadwell Draft Takes Center StageThe sizeable draft from Shadwell is one of the major

draws at this year's Autumn Horses in Training Sale, and the leading light from the operation's offering on Monday was the progressive Majalh, who was knocked down to Jassim Al Ghazali at 155,000 guineas ($320,061).

Although the Qatari trainer is a regular at this sale, COVID-19 related travel restrictions have kept him away from Newmarket on this occasion, so he struck the successful bid online.

Majalh, a 2-year-old son of Siyouni, was last seen running out a bloodless winner of a four-runner Brighton novice stakes, having also shown promise behind subsequent Emirates Autumn Stakes (G3) winner Coroebus on his penultimate outing for William Haggas.

"He's a very good-looking horse who gave a clean vetting and was very well prepared by Shadwell," said Al Ghazali's bloodstock agent Will Douglass. "He won nicely at Brighton and we've had a bit of luck buying horses from William Haggas. On pedigree there's a bit more to come and hopefully he can progress."

Douglass added: "Some Qataris have managed to get here and Jassim was very keen to fly over for the sale, but restrictions caused by Covid made it difficult."

Majalh is the first foal out of Musaanada, a winning Sea The Stars half sister to the listed scorer Greatwood. Further back it is the family of Classic winners Fame And Glory and Legatissimo. Shadwell sold 31 lots on Monday for receipts totaling 1,332,500 guineas ($2,750,919).

Raadobarg Moves to MurtaghAmong those staying closer to home is the smart

performer Raadobarg, who departs Roger Varian and is set to join the team at Johnny Murtagh's after Hamish Macauley landed the son of Night of Thunder at 150,000 guineas ($309,769).

The 3-year-old rattled off a hat-trick earlier in the year, with successes recorded at Leicester, Thirsk and Haydock. He hit a peak Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 104 when third to Royal Fleet in a class two handicap at Doncaster on his penultimate outing.

"I'm delighted to get such a high-class horse," said Murtagh. "His form looks solid and hopefully he can improve from three to four."

The half brother to July Stakes winner Classic Blade, a £200,000 Goffs UK Premier Sale buy by Alex Elliott, was offered by Aguiar Bloodstock.

Boman Back for MoreStuart Boman was responsible for sourcing

this year's Autumn Horses in Training Sale poster boy Zaaki, who has won a brace of group 1s since switching to the Australian stable of Annabel Neasham.

The Blandford Bloodstock agent was back in action on Monday and went to 140,000 ($289,048) guineas for the Shadwell-consigned Montather, who will join the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace operation. The 4-year-old son of Dubawi

won three races for Roger Varian, and changed hands with a peak RPR of 104.

"He's off to Australia," said Boman. "I've bought him for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. We've had a bit of luck buying at this sale over the years and they wanted to come back and buy a nice horse.

"I spoke to Roger Varian, who handled the horse beautifully, and I think he's a very talented individual who will like the faster pace in Australia because he's been a bit keen in races. He handles fast ground and he's a lovely horse to look at, so we're delighted to get him."

Montather is out of the listed-placed Lanansaak, a daughter of Zamindar from the family of Hamdan Al Maktoum's

One Thousand Guineas (G1) heroine Shadayid. The Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale

GROUP 1 WINNER TECHNICIAN TO STAND AT HARAS DE MONTAIGUBy Kitty Trice/Racing Post

Technician, a son of the late Mastercraftsman who won the Prix Royal-Oak (G1) for Martyn

Meade and Team Valor in 2019, will stand at Haras de Montaigu in France for the upcoming breeding season.

The gray trainee broke his maiden as a 3-year-old and captured 5 of 9 starts that year, highlighted by victories in the Unibet Geoffrey Freer Stakes (G3), Qatar Prix Chaudenay (G2), and the Prix Royal-Oak over high-class French stayer Call The Wind.

In his only start as a 4-year-old, he finished seventh in the Gold Cup at Ascot (G1) where he injured a tendon in the race and was retired.

Bred by Barronstown Stud, Technician sold to Dermot Farrington for €40,000 (US$47,180) at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2017.

Technician is the seventh foal out of the winning Sadler's Wells mare Arosa, a full sister to dual European group 2 scorer Crimson Tide and Cork group 3 scorer Tamarind, as well as a half sibling to Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2T) and French One Thousand Guineas (G1) fourth Pharatta.

In addition to Technician, Arosa has produced the group 3 stakes-placed Oasis Dream mare Water Hole.

Technician will be syndicated at Haras de Montaigu, where he will join a roster that includes Jimmy Two Times, Beaumec De Houelle, Night Wish, and No Risk At All.
