Blood

• The only fluid tissue in the human body• Classified as a connective tissue

Components of Blood

PLASMA (55%)

WHITE BLOOD CELLS & PLATELETS (>1%)

RED BLOOD CELLS (45%)

Components of Blood

FORMED ELEMENTS(Red & White Blood Cells and Platelets)

Page 18: Tuesday, Feb 1, 2011 Objective : Compare Blood Components BR:How are you going to make sure you are successful this semester?

Blood Plasma

• ~ 90% water• Liquid part of blood–Nutrients–Hormones–Proteins

Page 19: Tuesday, Feb 1, 2011 Objective : Compare Blood Components BR:How are you going to make sure you are successful this semester?

Formed Elements

• Erythrocytes = red blood cells• Leukocytes = white blood cells• Platelets = clotting cells

Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)

• Main function = carry oxygen

• Hematocrit = percentage of red blood cells in our body

Anemia• Someone is anemic if they

have:– A lower than normal amount

of red blood cells or– Not enough hemoglobin

• Sickle-cell anemia– Common in African

Americans– Sharp and spiky RBC low

oxygen

Above: Normal RBC

Below: Sickled RBC

White blood cells and platelets:

• Make up less than 1% of the formed elements

• White blood cells (leukocytes) = fight infections

• Platelets = involved with blood clotting and wound repair
