TRANSCRIPT
Dear Members of the Emmaus College Community The young men and women of our Year 12 class looked magnificent in their suits and
gowns at their formal on Saturday night. The pre-formal gathering was
attended by hundreds of family and friends who took the opportunity to get photos of the occasion. Despite the rain there was a mood of excitement that permeated the evening. The young people had a
wonderful night and were a credit to their parents and themselves. Thank you to Ms Proberts and her committee for their meticulous organisation of the formal.
The ANZAC Day commemoration at the College was a solemn and reverent ceremony fitting the occasion. Many thanks to Mr Jim
Short, President of the Jimboomba RSL sub-branch for his address
to the staff and students that highlighted the sacrifices made by our Defence Force personnel. Thank you also to Mr Robert Webb and Mr Michael Cox who attended the ceremony as former members of the Defence Force.
Open Day last Wednesday was extremely well attended by over 100 families. There is great interest in the College with prospective families speaking about the reputation of the college as a place of learning and welcome. They talk of a positive atmosphere and students who are friendly, polite and good natured. This is a great testament to you as parents and the important role you have in the nurturing of your children.
If you know anyone who is interested in enrolling their children at the College, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible. Some year
levels have very limited space available and may well be full in the very near future.
Kevin Twomey, Deputy Director of Brisbane Catholic Education visited the college on Wednesday morning. His purpose was to acquaint himself directly with the College
operations and meet students and staff. He was most impressed with the facilities, the calmness of the campus and the hospitality of the students and staff.
Another class of students from Kisarazu High School, Chiba in Japan will be visiting from 20 to 29 July. The group who came last year enjoyed their time at Emmaus and spoke highly of the friendships they made. This year a bigger group is coming and consequently we
need more homestay families to accommodate them. Quite a
number of last year’s host families have volunteered again however, we do need more families willing to look after the Japanese students for 10 days. The students come to the College each school day and are involved in a range of activities. Homestay families are reimbursed $230 however you are asked to provide a separate room
for the student. Please contact Cathie Cause on 5547 9990 if you can assist.
From Monday 21st May I will be taking 5 weeks’ long service leave. In my absence Steve Adair will be Acting Principal, Liesl Profke will be Acting Head 7-12 and Russel Davey will act in the role of Assistant Principal – Student Welfare. Matt Bergman has been appointed Acting Years 7 & 8 Coordinator. Mr Anthony Barlow will take up the role of Business Manager on 12th June. We warmly welcome Anthony to our community.
Every blessing for the week ahead.

***IMPORTANT DATES & EVENTS:***
EUCALYPTUS POD (P-2) As you are aware, the Eucalyptus pod area is used as part of the
learning space for students in the Early Years. On a daily basis,
the space is used by all classes in P-2 for PE lessons, small group
lessons and individual work. For this reason, this space needs to
be maintained as a quiet learning area without distractions.
Therefore, we ask for your assistance in ensuring that the pod
space is quiet and free from all distraction between 8:30am-
3:00pm. Parents are asked not to gather in the pod, or anywhere
near classroom doors or windows during the school day. This will
allow student learning to be maximised.
Parents wishing to gather and chat before 3:00pm are asked to
consider using the Year 5/6 eating area. This is a covered space,
well away from classrooms.
Playground supervision begins at 8:05 each morning. Prep
students may play in their playground or sit quietly with their
parents. Students in Year 1 and Year 2 are reminded to put their
bags on the rack and move to the oval. These are the supervised
areas before school.
ANZAC DAY Congratulations to all students who participated in the ANZAC Day
march. This was a wonderful example of the commitment that
Emmaus students have to the community. The students looked
great in their formal uniforms and behaved respectfully
throughout the ceremony. Well done.
AEDI SURVEY Emmaus is taking part in a national collection of data on young
children‟s development. It is called the Australian Early
Development Index (AEDI). The AEDI is an Australian Government
initiative which provides information about how populations of
Australian children are developing by the time they reach school.
Data collection will occur between May and June this year. Prep
teachers will complete a checklist based on their knowledge and
observations of each child. The AEDI will be used for policy and
planning, data analysis, and statistical and research purposes.
Data may also be combined with information from other
organisations to improve programs and policies for young
children.
Further information has been supplied separately to Prep families.
NAPLAN NAPLAN preparation is going very well at Emmaus. Students are
working hard in class to develop the literacy and numeracy skills
that are necessary to confidently and successfully participate in
NAPLAN. We firmly believe that daily quality learning is the best
preparation that students can do.
In order to become familiar with the style and layout of NAPLAN
questions, students have completed a range of example tests.
More information about these tests can be found at
www.naplan.edu.au.
Please ensure that the following dates are in your calendar:
Tuesday 15 May – Language Conventions and Writing
Wednesday 16 May - Reading
Thursday 17 May – Numeracy
Please contact me if you require any additional information about
NAPLAN.

How often during the day do you use Mathematics
across your daily life? I bet the answer is rather
frequently. One of the aims of the Mathematics
Curriculum is to instill the importance of
Mathematics and to develop an appreciation for
Mathematics and how this affects our daily life.
This term students have been involved in a variety of Mathematics
learning experiences and have covered different strands across P-
6. It is wonderful to see students so eager and keen to participate
in Mathematics learning. During these learning experiences
students have been developing their understanding of
Mathematics‟ concepts.
Students build their understanding when they:
Connect related ideas
Represent concepts in different ways
Identify commonalities and differences between aspects of
content
Progressively apply the familiar to develop new ideas
Describe their thinking mathematically
Develop the relationship between the „why‟ and the „how‟
of mathematics
Building students‟ knowledge and understanding in Mathematics
allows students to apply this understanding to problem solving
activities, investigations and everyday situations.

be conducted 15th, 16th, 17th May. While only a point-in-time
assessment of general skills in literacy and numeracy, NAPLAN
does provide valuable information to parents and schools with
regard to students‟ progress in these domains. All students are
encouraged to participate and receive their personalised results
later this year. Please see below the tests that will take place on
each day:
Tuesday May 15 – Language Conventions and Writing
Wednesday May 16 – Reading
Thursday May 17 – Numeracy – Calculator and Non-
Calculator

opportunities available to all of us. The liturgy was an expression of
gratitude, praise and wonder for our previous ten years as well as
our looking to the future. The singing, the involvement and the
enthusiasm of the students were obvious signs that Emmaus
College is a welcoming community.
A special thank you must go to the generous helpers who cooked
and prepared 1300 „sausages on bread‟ treats for lunches. This is
a tremendous effort and they do it with a laugh and a smile.
Thanks you to Leanne MacPherson, Joanne Wearing, Lyn Cording,
Samantha Strijland, Helen Adair, Fiona Galjaardt, Lionne
Summerville, Elaine Hurst, Leanne Fullerton and Simone Partridge.
This certainly displays the Emmaus spirit of giving.
Congratulations and thank you to the Year 11 and Year 12
students who helped prepare activities, run the activities and
generally support the younger students during the day. All the staff
are so proud of you efforts. Well done. Thank you to all the
Emmaus staff. A tremendous amount of time and effort was given
to allow others to enjoy the special day.
As a ten year celebration it was a day to remember and a way to
look to the future with great faith and hope.

Several violent events have recently had high exposure in the
media and are likely to be triggering questions or anxiety in many
of our children. The Australian Psychological Society
(www.psychology.org.au) provides several tip sheets, one of which
is re-produced below:
TALKING WITH CHILDREN ABOUT VIOLENCE AND INJUSTICE Parents sometimes feel unsure about how to talk with their
children about violence and injustice. A natural reaction is to
protect and shield your children from unpleasant and distressing
facts; however, the majority of school-age children are aware of
events in the news that involve violence. If not acknowledged and
discussed, the worries and anxieties of children about these world
events can become too frightening and difficult for them to deal
with.
Children usually feel less threatened and helpless if parents
respond as openly and honestly as possible to their questions and
fears. Following are some useful steps that you can use that offer
hope to children:
Always listen first, and listen closely to what the child is
asking or saying, to decide if they are seeking factual
information, or if the questions are expressing anxiety.
Allow the child to tell you how they feel. Let them know that
it is reasonable to feel angry, depressed, anxious, sad or
helpless.
Find out what the child already knows in case they have
mistaken ideas or facts, and correct any misconceptions.
Keep your answers appropriate to the child‟s age, level of
understanding, and their emotional maturity. For example,
it would be inappropriate to go into details about war with a
pre-schooler, however many 12 year olds may need a
longer and more detailed discussion of these issues.
Sometimes it may help to talk about your own feelings and
how you have coped, but do not burden the child with
anxieties that they are unable to handle. Inform your child
that millions of people all over the world are concerned
about the problems of violence and injustice and are
actively working for peaceful solutions.

Despite the rain, Emmaus College Senior students dressed ready to
impress for their Senior Formal held on Saturday April 28 at
Brookwater Golf Club, Brookwater.
Arriving in style and quite quickly,
students could not hide their
excitement and enthusiasm.
From Limousines, to hot rods to
the classic “bug” students came
ready to enjoy a wonderful night
with staff, family and friends.
At 7pm families wished their
child a „good night‟ as the
students departed and moved
upstairs to the formal dining
room which had been beautifully
set up in the chosen colour
scheme of black and silver.
School Captains, Rebekah G
and Nicholas S welcomed the
students to their Formal before
calling upon Formal Committee
member Lacey P to lead the
students in Grace.
With dinner and dessert well
under way, students were keen to
hit the dance floor.
Dancing on until 11pm, the
students left with the same smiles
and excitement with which they
had arrived.
Many thanks to the students on the Formal Committee, in particular
Lacey P, Shantell H, Tori E and Brittany C who worked tirelessly in
organising invitations, tickets and the final decisions for the set up
at Brookwater.
Congratulations to all the Year 12 students and their invited guests.

One of the most important learning goals in early years is to
recognize and read a large group of Sight Words.
Unfortunately some parents may have a misunderstanding of the
term sight words.
I hope this may clarify the issue for anyone working diligently at
home with their children on their sight word lists.
Sight words MUST be instantly recognized and said.
They are NOT to be sounded out at all.
No gap should be present when saying the words
If there is any hesitation the child must be told the word
immediately.
These are Sight Words and as such MUST be instantly
known without any prompting at all.
There are lots of games which can be played with sight words.
Ask your teacher or simply play the old fashioned game of snap.
Do this every day .
NO CHILD should advance to a new set of sight words until the
previous sets are imstantly recognized at least 5-8times in a row.
Hope that clears up any misconceptions.

Do you have an hour a week that you can use to help children improve their reading skills? We are looking for volunteers who may be interested in becoming tutors for some of our younger students. The more volunteers we have, the more children we can help.
The Support-a-Reader Program here at Emmaus College, and thanks to the support of a wonderful team of Parents and Grandparents it has been a resounding success.
Many children who had previously struggled with reading, and therefore hated doing it, were later heard making comments such as “I love reading!”, “Can I go and read now?” and “Is it my turn to read yet?”
The Support-a-Reader Tutors were very enthusiastic, forming bonds with the students they were helping, and seeing the difference they were making.
The Classroom Teachers loved the program as they could see the difference it was making to many students in their class.
We are therefore very keen to keep this program going and to continue providing that extra support for students.
People who have already trained as tutors can commence straight away. If you let me know your availability I will put your name on the roster and you will be able to begin. I need to know what day/days and time you are available so that I can make up the roster. Once that is done I will send it out to you. Please send me your information in an email or a note (marked with my name on it) to the office as soon as possible.
For people wishing to train as tutors I will be running training sessions later in the term. Training involves attendance at two training sessions (one and a half hours each), here at school. If you are interested, please contact me and let me know which days are the most suitable for you. If you require further information please contact me.
