Update: Repair to Roof Peak Cross

Due to a storm with high winds back in May of this year,
the cross that was located on the peak of the Church roof,
became loose from its support and had to be removed.
The wood framing at the base of the cross, had deteriorat-
ed over the years and no longer could safely support the
cross.
Once removed, an examination of the cross showed that
there was substantial deterioration to the metal which
formed the cross and repair was needed. In stripping the
grime and old paint from the cross, it appeared that the
original finish on the cross may have been a gold leaf appli-
cation.
Repairs are being completed on the cross and once the
cross is painted in a gold color, it will be re-installed.
During the re-installation process, the supporting base and
flashing at the roof peak will also be repaired so to provide
a long term fix to last for many years.

SAINT MARY OF THE MOUNT PARISH PITTSBURGH, PA
Music “Notes” with Amanda:
Music, Weddings, and Changes
As the Director of Music at Saint Mary of the Mount, I have the privilege to work with every single one of our couples
who are getting married here. In fact, I meet with almost all of the 75-80+ couples that get married here! I sit down with
each couple and hear about what they have in mind for their wedding: if they have a family member who would like to sing
anything, if they want additional instrumentalists (like violin, trumpet, etc.), and if they have any specific songs they want
during their ceremony.
Furthermore, I play almost all of these weddings too! While it, personally, makes for very long Saturdays (1 pm wedding
+ 3 pm wedding + 5 pm Mass on Saturday), it brings a huge sense of pride and joy to be a part of so many people’s special
days. The couples who get married here –especially those who are a part of our church community as parishioners – are
interested in how their wedding liturgy will go, from the music to the scripture passages and everything in-between. (And
if you’re one of these couples, let me give a special shout out to you! You are such a valued part of our church communi-
ty.)
We also try to educate couples about all of the subtle things the Catholic Church does to make the wedding day as sacred
as can be. In particular, we work to educate couples (and the parish, as a whole) about the changes made to the Rite of
Weddings (i.e. the Wedding Ceremony & Mass) in the United States. These changes were made in January 2017 in a na-
tionwide effort to elevate the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage to a solemnity, a sacred day on the Catholic calen-
dar typically reserved for certain saints’ feast days. One of the main changes involves the procession, which begins at the
beginning of every wedding. This procession is considered a liturgical procession, mimicking a Sunday church proces-
sional. What does that mean? The procession will include those who are most involved in a couple’s wedding. For example:
- Your priest/deacon will begin the procession, as he is a big part of the wedding ceremony.
- The groom, then, follows behind the priest. He can be accompanied by his mother or walk by himself.
-The bridesmaids and groomsmen, then, follow in pairs, followed by the bride, accompanied by either her father, mother,
or both your mom & dad.
These wedding Rite changes also allow for an option for the bride and groom to enter into their wedding together, which
is an incredibly beautiful and powerful statement. (“We are entering into the marriage and into this church together, as
separate people. We will leave together, married as one.”) At this time, we are okay with either of the entrance procession
options.
The procession is one of the most anticipated moments of the wedding, and the changes made remind us all that a Catholic
wedding liturgy is such a sacred occasion. We at Saint Mary of the Mount continue to help couples find moments of sacred
space & prayer in the midst of wedding planning, focusing on the beautiful Sacrament of Marriage they enter together.

Preserve the Unity of the Spirit through
the Bond of Peace
Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, from which the sec-
ond reading at Mass this weekend is taken, emphasizes the
unity of the Church. It is not written solely to the Chris-
tian community in Ephesus, but to the worldwide Church
united to Jesus Christ her head and shepherd. Yet this
focus on unity is not out of concern for the Church her-
self, but instead as the means for making God’s plan of
salvation known throughout the world. Some ask how the
changes the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is
bringing about can lead to growth and strength for the
Church of Pittsburgh. The answer is that we are being
invited to work hard and pray even harder to be united in
faith as we come together to form new parish communi-
ties. There will be challenges ahead, but let us listen to
the wisdom of Saint Paul as we “bear with one another
through love” and focus our hearts on what unites us in
faith: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and
Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
