FROM THE EAST
B rethren,
I am certain that this edition of the Trestleboard is going to be a
good one as we now have two editors – MWB Jim Wadley and
newly raised Brother Nick Posuniak. Nick will be assuming full
time duty as soon as he’s fully trained which should be soon.
Welcome aboard.
There are other changes in the active members of the lodge too.
Brother and Chaplain Aaron French has moved to California to
pursue a doctorate in religious studies at the University of
California Davis. I have appointed newly raised Brother Robert
Ribbeck as the interim chaplain for the remainder of the year.
Again, welcome aboard. Also, MWB Bob Conrad and WB Rich
Hall have served for over 5 years conducting the Wednesday
night discussion group – and they have passed on their
knowledge of Masonry to literally dozens of prospective
members, many of whom have become brother Masons.
However, it is time to move on, so the lodge is seeking
experienced brothers to continue the fine work begun so many
years ago. Finally, Brother Chris Jordan has resigned as Junior
Warden; because this office is an elected one it would require
dispensation by Grand Lodge to hold an off cycle election.
Given the short time remaining in this masonic year we will wait
until the next regular election in November, so the office will be
filled on a temporary basis by WB Allen Bailey.

FROM THE EAST
(CONTINUED)
Although the lodge is officially “dark” in July and August we
have had numerous activities. Many of us attended Grand
Lodge Communication in June and elected MWB J Michael
Atchley as Grand Master. The lodge also received another
Master Architect Award. The trustees and others worked
very hard in the preceding months reacting to contradictory
and unconstitutional messages from the Grand Lodge
pertaining to the change in insurance coverage for the
lodge building, property, directors and officers. I am
pleased to inform you that we have more than adequate
insurance and at a much reduced premium.
The lodge conducted a very successful Table Lodge on June
19th attended by many brothers from numerous lodges.
Guest of honor WB Greg Vasquez, Junior Grand Deacon,
gave a well-received presentation on the Entered
Apprentice obligation. We used the new projector in the
dining room on July 1st to stream a Diamondbacks game on
TV. On July 23rd we had an excellent potluck dinner with
plenty of food and fellowship. July 25th saw many of us
boarding the Diamondbacks Express bus for Chase Field to
see our Dbacks triumph over the Brewers. A great time was
had by all. And of course we continued to exemplify
degrees with two Entered Apprentice, two Fellowcraft and
one Master Mason degree in June and July. As of this
writing we are scheduled to exemplify one Fellowcraft and
one Master Mason degree in August.
Which leads us to September in which we will resume having
dinner followed by a stated meeting on the first
Wednesday of the month. Also scheduled are another
potluck social dinner on September 23rd. The October
stated meeting is “Step Up” night with next year’s officer
line in their presumptive chairs. Saturday October 17th will
see us pitching horseshoes – that is we’re hosting a
horseshoe tournament at Shooter’s Steakhouse and Grill
from 3 pm til 5 pm or so. Details to follow.
I hope the summer months have been productive for all of
the Tucson Lodge #4 family and friends. I look forward to
seeing you in lodge and at our social functions.
With Brotherly love and affection,
-Leigh Creighton Worshipful Master 2015
FROM THE WEST
The lodge has been very active these past few months
with many degrees and activities. Since June we have
initiated 2 Entered Apprentices, passed 3 Fellowcraft
Masons, and raised 2 Master Masons. In these
degrees we have had a few brethren who have
received proficiencies for sitting as Master. I would
like to thank all who have participated in the degrees
– both participants and side-liners during these summer
months. I would also like to thank the number of visitors
from other nearby lodges and across the country who
have participated in the degrees and events.
A very special thanks goes to Most Worshipful Brother
Robert Conrad and Worshipful Brother Richard Hall
who, for the last five years, have facilitated a
candidate sessions every Wednesday in the Lodge
dining room. The purpose of these classes was to
educate those that were interested in Masonry. Bob
and Rich provided an introductory perspective into
Masonry as well as becoming familiar with each
individual. Each candidate was expected to attend the
sessions over a six-month period, the minimum time
required for a Mason to know a petitioner. Discussions
would be of a vast range of topics that would typically
veer off to individual experiences which brought
comradery among the group. Bob and Rich would
provide material and even books: “The Builders” by
Joseph Fort Newton which was distributed to each
candidate. After five years, Worshipful Brothers Bob
and Rich have decided step down from the service that
has been so valuable to the lodge and the Fraternity.
From the statistics I have gathered there were 130
participants in the class of which 37 have become
Masons. Our current line of Lodge Officers have 6
brothers who have regularly attended and petitioned
through this program. Thank you both for all you have
done for the Fraternity!
Fraternally,
-Jon Schmidt Senior Warden

MASONIC HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT
FREE LOAN CHEST
A message from WB Paul Weathers: After the closure of the loan chest west of Sabbar Shrine Center I kept receiving contacts in search of physical assist items. So I started accepting donated items and issuing what I received to people with needs. Before Brother Rich Gilreath moved away to Texas he transferred what he had left of the Faye Blackman Loan Chest to me. I’ve established a smaller operation in a shed behind Builders Lodge’s Bundy Masonic Center. I have a hospital bed, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, walking canes, bath/shower seats, etc. So Brothers please be alert and attentive to those in need for such items, either for a short time loan or for indefinite time. It’s a no-charge Masonic charity. If we have it they can receive it.

The photo above was taken on August 8 at approximately 7 am. Explanation is as follows: when you
break the wall you fix it which is what Mike is doing. When you get there early and do all the prep
work you get to stand there, drink coffee and watch Mike work, which is what Ray is doing. When you
don’t do anything, you just make coffee and take pictures. What the guy from Cancun is doing nobody
knows.
THE STUDY OF GEOMETRY The Widow’s Son
If you wanted to preserve vital, important information for
posterity in a way only certain people could recognize and
use it while other people would accept it as nothing instruc-
tive or special and with no awareness that such valuable
knowledge even existed how would you do it? The opera-
tive stone masons were faced with this challenge centuries
ago. Many persons during that time were illiterate. Masonic
theorist Mark Stavish in Freemasonry: Rituals, Symbols &
History of the Secret Society (2007), proposed a straight-
forward geometrical interpretational that hidden Sacred
Geometry was incorporated into the story of “The Widow’s
Son.” Somewhere in Masonic ritual one may occasionally
encounter this story. A married couple can be geometrically
represented as a perfect square. When divided vertically in
the center each one of the couple comprises half of the per-
fect square as two equal rectangles. (See Figure 1) Having a
deceased husband the widow represents one rectangle.
When we divide the rectangle of the widow with a corner to
corner diagonal line, the symbol of human generation, the
creation of the widow’s son begins with the resultant right
triangle. (See Figure 2) We continue with a compass on
paper or a rope on bare ground and draw a curved line from
the top to the bottom of the right triangle. (See Figure 3)
Next the compass or rope is repositioned to generate an
equal line from opposite ends of the right triangle. (See
Figure 4) This ritual called finding the Widow’s Son pro-
duced a perfect golden proportion rectangle.
The length of the original square being 1 and the length the
length of the golden rectangle, the precious jewel of Sacred
Geometry, is the irrational number ((square root of 5) +
1)/2 or approximately 1.618, known to the ancients as the
golden proportion. (See Figure 5) A multitude of Medieval
churches, cathedrals and castles were built on this design
by finding the Widow’s lost son with the largest dimen-
sions laid out first and subsequent smaller dimensions were
then simply smaller fractions of the same aspects. To the
study of Geometry, therefore, your attention is especially
directed.
