CHINA VISIT

The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for

Young Australians, the National Statement on Asia

Literacy in Australian Schools 2011-2012 and the

recently announced Prime Ministerial White Paper,

provide a clear statement on specific goals for our

students. These include gaining foundational and in-

depth knowledge, skills and understanding of the

histories, geographies, societies, arts, literatures and

languages of diverse countries of Asia and their

engagement with Australia.

The National Curriculum that is to be introduced in

2013 outlines Asian Studies, Aboriginal Studies and Sustainability as priorities for all students.

With this backdrop Natalie Rose, Suzanne Khatib, Fiona

Pratt and I headed off on 26th October for our study tour

and conference in Shanghai and Nanjing.

To say we have returned to Australia as changed people

is an understatement. The most exciting outcome has

been the establishment of our sister-school partnership

with Changzhou Miduqiao Primary School in the Jiangsu

Province of China. As international partners we will be

sharing professional learning experiences, teacher visits, teacher exchanges, whole school student interaction

through various ICT opportunities and in the future

student visits/tours both from China and to China. Mr

Wu and I signed a Memorandum of Understanding on

Cooperation between Friendly Schools. This document

will be on display in my office once it is completed.

What did we learn? Our students will be living within an international world

where they will travel and work within a global

community.

Understanding Australian culture is imperative if they

are going to acknowledge our similarities and

differences.

Perfecting English is imperative in learning a second

language.

They need to understand and know the language and

culture of our Asian neighbours

What are our immediate plans for the future?

To learn another language takes 2000 hours. This

obviously cannot be achieved during their primary years schooling, however we can make significant inroads.

In 2013 all students will receive Chinese Mandarin

Language and Cultural Studies once a week. In Year 3

we will introduce an immersion program where language

and culture can be further developed through

mathematics and our Units of Inquiry.

Most importantly:

Children are the same no matter where you are in the

world, they laugh, play and are eager to learn. In China

they want to know and learn about us and with us!

Mr Wu, Principal of Miduqiao Primary School and I,

symbolically showing the strength of our future

partnership as sister schools.

CHINESE CULTURAL DAY On our return I was delighted to see that our students

were already being exposed to authentic cultural

experiences. The day began will cultural performances,

led by our own dancers Skyla, Jasmin, Adriana, Doris,

Jessica, Karuti, Grace and Michelle from years Three,

Four and Five.

We were entertained by secondary students from

Shanghai Yanan Secondary College. Who provided us all

with the opportunity to see and listen to traditional

instruments being played.

The quality of the performance was exceptional and our students were enthralled.

Throughout the day each year level actively participated

in a range of activities that not only gave them further

insight into Chinese culture, it planted the seed for future

creative pursuits.

Preps made symbolic Chinese opera masks Year 1s learnt a traditional Chinese dance

Year 2s did intricate Chinese paper cutting

Year 4s participated in Kung Fu martial arts

Year 5s were entertained by a Chinese magician

Year 6s learnt the fine art of Chinese calligraphy

Year Six students trying their hand at Chinese

calligraphy.

Year Two’s paper cutting masterpieces.

Year Ones learning traditional Chinese fan dancing.

The whole school used chop sticks to eat their lunch –

special fried rice for all. It was fun to watch certain

teachers trying to manipulate these utensils without

dropping grains of rice!

UPDATE ON INDUSTRIAL ACTION

You may have heard in the media that negotiations

between the Department of Education & Early Childhood

Development and various education unions continue with

no resolution in sight. As a result, members of the

Australian Education Union (AEU), have been asked to

support a number of work bans and rolling half day stop

work meetings in Term 4. The work bans already in

place will continue and affect the implementation of the new National Curriculum, school visits by members of

the Coalition State Government, the administration and

collection of DEECD surveys and the preparation of end

of year Student Reports. However, the bans will not in

any way affect the assessment of students, or the planning

for and provision of a high quality educational program

for every child. The rolling half-day stop work meetings

are planned and as always, we will provide information

in relation to these as early as possible. Thank you for

all your patience and support during these

Agreement negotiations.

CONGRATULATIONS! Well done to all those wonderful readers at McKinnon

November and listed all the students

(whose publishing was consented) who completed the

hesitate to contact me.

Ben Welsh (Premiers Reading Challenge Co-ordinator)

Remembrance Day Assembly

My name is Chloe. I was lucky enough to be asked, along with two other

Grade 5 students, to hold the schools Remembrance Day

assembly. This was a challenge because standing in front

of the whole school was a bit scary.

I did the introduction and spoke about Lt Colonel John

McCrae who wrote the poem “In Flanders Field”. It’s

about the poppies that grow there every year in spring

since the end of WW1. When I read this introduction it

made me picture what happened and it made me feel sad

to think of all the people who have died in war and how

lucky I was to be safe.

Congratulations – Music Success Congratulations to Destanee Georgiadis from 4S who

recently passed her Grade 3 piano exam, scoring an

impressive B. Well done Destanee!

Congratulations - Sporting Success
