Toxins to avoid for your pets.

There are many common household, garden and food stuffs that can be toxic to your pet. If

you are concerned that your pet may have eaten or come into contact with any of the following

we recommend you contact a vet immediately. Be ready to give the vet the name of the

product, how much your pet has come into contact, at what time, and to give a description of

your pet’s current condition.

This list is not exhaustive, if you are concerned about what your pet may have had access to;

contact your vet.

In the House:

Food stuffs: o Chocolate o Grapes and raisins o Onions and garlic o Macadamia nuts

Sugar-free chewing gum (Xylitol) Avocadoes Caffeine containing products Lilies (even cut flowers) and some houseplants Medications: paracetamol is particularly toxic to cats even in very small

amounts. You should never medicate your pet without first seeking veterinary advice. Always keep medications in sealed containers out of reach of pets

Flea or worming treatments: always double check with the manufacturer’s instructions. Some dog flea preparations (permethrins) are safe on dogs but can be fatal when used on cats. Preparations to be put on the skin can be extremely poisonous if given orally

Toothpaste (Xylitol)

In the Garden or shed:

Rat bait Snail and slug pellets Fertilizers Insect killers: organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethrins Lilies in cats: Easter lily, Day lily, Tiger lily, Japanese show lily and the Rubrum lily can

all cause acute kidney failure in cats All parts of the Castor Bean or Castor Oil plant are toxic Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow Brunfelsia bonodora (syn. B. australis, B. latifolia) is toxic,

especially the berries Cycads, Zamia or Sago palm For a full list of toxic plants and their pictures, go to www.aspca.org (American Society

for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)

For a change of pace – our secretary Daniela has supplied some photo’s and a brief description of avalanche rescue dogs on a recent trip to Wanaka in New Zealand. Here’s what she had to say. We were lucky enough to be able to talk to this avalanche dog owner/trainer and follow him on his training exercise on Treble Cone in Wanaka. This job is totally voluntary and the trainer receives no monetary assistance. He was very keen to compare notes on how we at Northern Suburbs Dog Club get the best out of our dogs by playing with them to keep them upbeat and excited and enjoying the work. Exactly what Gina, Bernice and Lyn are so very passionate about. The training involves some poor soul being buried in a hole after an avalanche has gone through. He has with him the dog's favourite toy. The rescue team goes in, starting from downwind working up. Once the dog has picked up the scent, he barks and starts to dig. The trainer joins him and they make a huge game of it, laughing and shouting and encouraging the dog, finally unearthing the victim who also makes a huge, huge fuss of the dog with the toy.

"Rocket" - avalanche dog in training wearing protective eye gear to avoid harm from glare off the snow, also cold wind.

Taking the chair lift sure beats walking! Rocket is fitted with a special harness with a handle and is lifted onto the moving chair then firmly attached.

DID YOU KNOW?

http://www.dogdiaries.com.au/doggy-news/101-interesting-dog-facts/

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is also referred to as the “Nanna or Nanny dog” because of their strong affection for children. Originally bred not only for bull baiting and fighting, they were also used by the aristocracy to protect the children when playing in fields from wolves and other predators. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier takes a dominant owner and needs early socialization and behaviour training with other breeds as they tend to prefer human contact. It's absolutely crucial that all training of the breed be done in an optimistic, consistent and patient method as the Staffordshire is sensitive to tone and sulk easy. They excel in agility and obedience competition and also have had success as therapy canines. They are also easily housetrained. It has been said that "No breed is more loving with its family”.

DID YOU KNOW?

Basenji “Buh-SEN-jee”are smooth,

muscular, athletic dogs on the small side. The first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was first introduced to England in 1937. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa the dog was used by the natives as a guide in the forest, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, for pointing and retrieving of small game and driving game into nets. The Basenji washes itself like a cat and has no doggie smell, so very little grooming is needed. This is a good dog for people with allergies. This breed

sheds little to no hair.
