Keeping our local library aliveWe want to hear your views

A dialogue is due to start-Lambeth Council plans to begin a dialogue with Lambeth communities in Aprilon the “future vision and direction of the Lambeth library and archive service”.Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library – like other library friends groups inLambeth – will be participating.

We want you to hear from you beforehand.

-as Lambeth Council cuts its spending on librariesThe background to these discussions is the plan by Lambeth Council, as partof the overall cut in its spending over the next three years, to reduce thebudget for libraries by £825,000 from the current level of £5.5million. In thefirst year the reduction will be only £75,000, which will be achieved largelythrough efficiency savings via the coordination of some central-office functionswith six other local councils.

So no libraries will be shut in the next twelve months. But the very big cut inthe following two years – which is ten times the level scheduled for 2011/12-clearly poses a threat to the service we receive at our library, and even the

library itself.

Friends of TSL has a view on thisSo this is the moment for us to make our own proposals for ways to maintainthe service at the South Lambeth Library and more widely throughoutLambeth, as more draconian cuts in spending are being considered.

There are two routes to follow: reducing costs and increasing income. Wewould like to hear any ideas you have along either route.

And we would also like your reaction to some proposals the committee hasdeveloped for new income-generating activities at Tate South LambethLibrary. We have concentrated on this aspect because we have alwaysconsidered that the potential of the library space, and the resources there,have not been adequately exploited.
