The 25th of March 1821 is today recognised as the moment in time that galvanised the Hellenes to overthrow more than 400 years of Ottoman rule. It was the beginning of the subsequent decolonisation and move towards a truly independent Greek nation.

This evening’s concert is one of many events throughout this year celebrating two centuries of liberation: a word that resonates through the psyche of Hellenic people, whether in Greece or in the worldwide diaspora.

The four composers featured in tonight’s concert –Tsitsanis, Hatzidakis, Xarchakos, and Theodorakis – are giants of world music. Their compositions evoke a rich tapestry of Greek identity and experience and reflect the grandeur and drama of the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean coastlines.

Dimitris Basis is a prolific and exceptional musician, rightly recognised as one of the most popular artists in Greece today. Tonight, he brings his own interpretation and energy to the music of revolution and empowerment under the direction of conductor Dimitris Calligeros.

Art has the power to connect us not only to each other but to our shared culture and history. It’s no surprise that the literary arts played a role in the European powers of the time throwing their might behind the Greek cause, thanks to the passionate writings of Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and their contemporaries. Their poetic pleas recalled all that the Ancient Greeks gave to the civilised world and pointed to a common humanity, stirring action beyond Greece itself.

Music in particular stirs potent emotional memories: music from our childhood, passed down through generations, becomes part of a shared identity and a collective consciousness. Imbued in these songs, we find the sense of freedom and hope that characterises Greek culture wherever it may be found.

COMPOSERSVASSILIS TSITSANISVassilis Tsitsanis was a Greek songwriter and bouzouki player. He became one of the leading Greek composers of his time and is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Rebetiko and Laiko music. Tsitsanis wrote more than 500 songs and is remembered as an extraordinary composer and bouzouki player.

MANOS HATZIDAKISManos Hatzidakis was a Greek composer and theorist of Greek music. His legacy and contribution is widespread among the works of contemporary Greek music, through the second half of the 20th and into the 21st century. He was also one of the main proponents of the “Éntekhno” form of music (along with Mikis Theodorakis). In 1960, he received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his song Never on Sunday from the film of the same name.

STAVROS XARCHAKOSStavros Xarchakos is a Greek composer and conductor, who has served as the director of the Greek National Orchestra. His music has been recorded to 42 albums and has been used frequently in film and television. Internationally he is known as the composer for the Rebetiko film score, composing the music for the Werner Herzog film Signs Of Life, and composing the music for the 1983 BBC TV mini series, The Dark Side of the Sun.

MIKIS THEODORAKISMikis Theodorakis is a Greek composer and lyricist who has contributed to contemporary Greek music with over 1000 works. He is Greece’s most well-known composer and has achieved international acclaim for scoring the films Zorba the Greek, Z and Serpico. He is also responsible for composing The Ballad of Mauthausen, a revered work based on Kambanellis’s poem of Holocaust survival.

DIMITRIS BASIS Dimitris Basis is a Greek singer and musician who has performed with some of Greece’s finest musicians and is a regular vocalist with the Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra. With a diploma in Byzantine music, he started chanting the liturgy in the local church before taking his first steps in professional singing at the age of 20. Over the years, he has released many albums that have been a success in Greece and across Europe.
