SEVMASH

The Northern Machine-Building Enterprise or Sevmash is the centre of nuclear shipbuilding industry. It is a unique, huge and powerful enterprise.

The Northern Machine-Building Enterprise is the largest shipyard in Russia. It was established in 1939. Since then it has built battleships, submarine chasers, cruisers, diesel submarines and transport ships. Since 1954 Sevmash has started producing submarines of various types: nuclear submarines with titanium hulls, nuclear-powered ballistic missile-carrying submarines (SSBN), diesel-powered submarines (DPS).

The total area of the yard is 320 hectares. About 27 thousand shipbuilders are employed at the enterprise. At present Sevmash produces both military and civil items: ships and vessels, shipboard machinery, equipment for civil construction, forestry and metallurgy, equipment for oil, gas and chemical industries, medical instruments, furniture, crystal glass and other consumer goods.

Sevmash is working in conjunction with many Russian and foreign companies from Scandinavia, India, China.

SEVERODVINSK TODAY

Today Severodvinsk is one of the main industrial and cultural centres in the north -west of Russia. There are many industrial enterprises in Severodvinsk, among them there are ship-building and machine-building plants, whose products are well-known in our country and abroad. There are also factories producing food products, dairy products, clothes and energy.

The name of Severodvinsk was given to the city in 1957. On the 15 th of February, 1983 the city was awarded the Order of Lenin for the heroic labour during the Great Patriotic War and after it, for the achievements in economy and culture.

There are beautiful parks and squares, attractive buildings of old and modern architecture in the city. Secondary schools, vocational schools, technical and medical colleges, universities supply the enterprises with workers and specialists.The cityzens can spend their free time in palaces of culture and different clubs, at a cinema or a café. They can also visit libraries or go to a stadium. The city Drama Theatre is very popular too. Our city museum tells about the history of Severodvinsk.

Many streets and squares of the city are named after our famous countrymen: Lomonosov, Boichuk, Yegorov, Kirilkin, Konovalov, Tortsev, Voronin. There are monuments to the heroes of war and labour and the people famous in the history of our city, region and country.
