The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 9, 2013
Trust in GodIn our first reading today Elijah turns to God when the widow with whom he is lodging loses her son. H
trusts that not only will God listen to his prayer, but that God will take pity on the childs mother. Again,
the Gospel, Jesus has compassion for the widow of Nain and restores the life of her Son. At first glance
would seem that God has a special place in his heart for widows. But is it only widows, or are these storiepointing to a larger reality?
Intellectually we know that they do, in fact, point to a much larger reality. God cares for all of us. At th
gateway of Nain we see Jesus deep compassion. This is the compassion of a loving God our loving God
Compassion, to feel with, is the very hallmark of the incarnation. The Son of God became human
share our feelings; to be able to feel what we feel, with us. Over and over we see Jesus reach out, touc
and heal, even when touching meant being ritually unclean under Jewish Law.
We see this in the scriptures and we marvel. We read these stories and are stirred to believe in Jesus a
the Son of God. But all too often, when we read these stories, we see them as events of the past. Jesu
doesnt do that anymore; or does he?
This is the point where the real transcends the intellectual; where faith and hope overcome fear and loss
Jesus ascension was not the end of Gods compassion on Earth. It didnt signal the end of Gods carin
The Old Testament stories, like todays reading from the Book of Kings, are proof that God was active
peoples lives before Jesus time and promise that he is still active now.
The scriptures are the promise that God is always with us; not just in some intellectual way, but concretel
Jesus still reaches out and touches us. God still heals our pain and takes away our fear. This is the greate
transcendent reality. The compassion of our loving God is living and active in your life and mine today! I
times of pain, fear or loss, God is there.
If we trust, we will see God work miracles; we only need to ask. They are not always what we might expe
or ask for, but they are always what we really need. Contrary to the popular expression, God never say
no. We only need to trust!
Congratulations & Best Wishes
