Today, and in every liturgy, we pray to God, who is the reason for every event in life, the One who always reunites us.

Every liturgy is a moment of worship, it is an act of homage by which, in justice, we pay tribute to God.

The liturgy comes from our hearts, which we know are blessed by God in order to bless Him in return. For this reason, the liturgy always invites us to enter into God’s "attitude of waiting.” By this I mean, to get close to the thoughts of God, the plans of God, the power of God.

This worship happens at every Mass, but today, in a particular way, the readings invite us to call to mind the great mystery of the Holy Trinity. It is a mystery that we celebrate every year - we call it the Feast of God.

This is a celebration of God par excellence - the mystery of His own being. Even though we celebrate it every year, each liturgical year has a different emphasis.

We all know that on Sundays in our Catholic liturgy we have cycles. For instance, this year we are in Cycle A, and most of the gospel readings are going to be from St. Matthew. The year 2015 will be Cycle B, when our teacher will be St. Mark. Finally, Cycle C will bring us readings from the gospel of St. Luke. After these three cycles, we will start with Cycles A, B and C again. Regarding the gospel of John, we are always going to read from it, especially in the Easter season. As we have said, every year has its own emphasis. So thus far, at least two things are clear. First, the liturgy is an act of adoration that elevates our hearts to God and helps us to get close to Him and wait in the expectation of the divine. Second, today we are celebrating the Feast of God from the perspective and flavor of Cycle A.

June 15, 2014 The Most Holy Trinity

All God’s children are welcome to this sacred place and liturgy. The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest.

What is unique about the readings of this Cycle? Where are they leading us? What are they trying to teach us? I think they are inviting us to see the beautiful contrast between the greatness of God and His closeness to us. Pay careful attention. In human life, these two things tend to be separated, in that what we consider to be big and great is normally far from our reach. On the other hand, what is small is within our reach, because it doesn't have much importance.

We don’t interact with truly important people very often. We don't talk with them. People with great economic fortunes are not normally in our reach. They are not something common in our parish. Even big planets are not close to us. As we can see, there is a constant. That which is big and important seems to be far from our reach.

The things that are near us are the simple, little things - the things that occur in our everyday lives. It has been rightly said that nobody appears to be important when you get to know them well - when there is enough closeness.

This is a rule that we could apply to marriage. When a man wants to start a relationship with a woman, it might seem as though he is trying to get to the moon - something extremely difficult. It might seem like an impossible task. But when a couple is married for a while, when a man and a woman have been spending a lot of time together, when they become very close, perhaps then the man will barely remember that at one point it seemed almost impossible to him that she could be his wife. It doesn't seem to be such a big deal anymore (or vice versa for the wife thinking of her longtime husband).

This is why I say that that which is great and that which we have near to us, don't normally go together. Almost always, what is important is not within our reach, and almost always, what is close is not a big deal, but is easy and simple.

The readings today bring us a very important teaching: God is, at the same time, greater than our intellect can fathom, yet closer to us than we can imagine. This is precisely what touches and moves the heart of Moses in the first reading. God leads Moses to a unique spiritual experience - to what we know as Theophany (a manifestation of God). It is an intense experience of God. Yet in that experience with the great God, we hear Him saying to the Heart of Moses, "I am compassionate and merciful." God knows, in His greatness, how to come down to the level of our misery, to the point of calling Himself our God.

Finally, brothers and sisters of St. Mark’s, the teaching in the gospel for today is similar - the mystery of God in those days was prohibited to even be mentioned. The Jews would not even pronounce the name of God because of the infinite respect they had for His presence. Only the High Priest was able to pronounce God’s name, and then only once a year. This God was almost impossible for humans to reach, as we read in the letter from James. But God so loved the world that He went to the extreme of giving His only Son, out of love, so that whoever believes in Him might not perish. This is a very beautiful way to meet God. God is great - so great that all must be amazed by Him. Yet at the same time, God is close - so close that all must experience confidence in His presence. The heart that is truly Christian will always find a close encounter with these two truths: a great confidence in God, and at the same time a great admiration for the mystery of God.

My hope is that this reflection will help us to live this Feast of the Holy Trinity with greater intensity, and that this liturgical moment will also help us to give our lives to the Lord. Precisely because God is great, He deserves everything from us - our whole heart, not just a piece of it. And precisely because He is so close to us, He won't reject any of our offerings.

My next signing spot: a small, sticky one carved out of an avalanche of bills and miscellaneous despair, atop a wobbly card table. My job is never dull. There is a game I used to play. As I pulled into the client’s driveway, I would glance at my car clock and tell myself, “I’m done in twenty minutes.” This is the average time it takes me to complete a loan closing. After a dozen years I’ve got it down, a machine, I’m all business. I would get a perverse pleasure as I started the engine and backed out, smiling, exactly twenty minutes later. I have always felt lighter as I drive away after a good bit of work. Grateful. That feeling of peace, in general, seems to be growing as I close in on my first year as a Catholic. A lot has changed for me, in the way I see things, people, life and my purpose within it. I have come to realize there could be something more happening in these brief encounters I am having again and again with relative strangers in their homes, something profoundly spiritual. So, lately I have been trying something new. Since I fervently believe God is everywhere and inside every one of us, I have begun to consciously seek him out in others, as if looking through a window. When I enter a home I now strive to see past the obvious. Past the sometimes ostentatious surroundings to the loneliness and loss. Past my typical judgment of some as being close to their money and far from God. Past the filth and the chaos to the heartache and the warmth, especially when, in the humblest of dwellings, the homeowner offers me a cup of tea. Unmistakably Him. Whether shining steadily in a dimly lit kitchen or reflecting off a glittery centerpiece. It is in those moments when I recognize God in the flawed and good people seated across from me that I am again flooded with gratitude for the blessing of my life-saving, funny little job. My small hope is this: that in those twenty minutes, (or however long it takes!) I will be mindful of Christ’s presence and will remember to look for Him. And until it has become my necessary habit, I will pray, in kind, to be that window for Christ to all I meet, so that through me, He may shine forth.

Project Home 2014! “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a

stranger and welcome you?” (Mt 25: 1-46)

In the spirit of evangelization and love for our neighbor, the Church of Saint Mark has served as a Project Home site every August since 2001. Project Home, sponsored by the St Paul Council of Churches, is an overnight emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness. We offer shelter, food and Christ’s message to about 20 people each night (serving families with children of all ages).

There are many ways to participate in this parish-wide effort. Volunteers will be needed for a 5-8pm shift, and for the overnight shift, from 8pm-7:30am. Donations of food, towels and toothpaste, and financial donations would be welcomed (please drop at the parish center). There will be a sign up for Project Home in the back of Church following the Masses this weekend, or online at the parish website. If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact Mitch Mueller at [email protected] or 612-245-5274, or Catherine Njogu at [email protected] or 612-310-8662.

The American flag collection has ended. Girl scout troop #54118 (now 6th graders) collected a total of 21 flags from the school and parish community. The flags were retired on Flag Day - June 14th. Thanks!

During the summer months, we are sometimes tempted to wear clothes to Mass that we might wear at the beach or on a picnic. Please remember that Sunday Mass clothes should reflect a high standard of decorum. Shorts, tank tops, skimpy clothing, and the like are not appropriate attire for the House of God. When getting ready for Mass, ask yourself, “Would I wear this to a nice dinner?” If your answer is “no”, then please remember that you are getting ready to participate in the ultimate banquet where Jesus himself is present. Our dress should reflect the high status we have been given as children of God, called to worship in his presence.

7th Grade Chore Group - Saint Mark’s 7th grade students are anxious for opportunities to earn money for their school trip to Washington DC in October, 2014. These students are interested in helping with chores you have, such as light housework or cleaning, babysitting, walking pets, raking leaves or any other yard work. Please contact Jolene Little at 651-485-1319 to arrange for a student to help you with your chores. The hourly rate of pay is $8.00 per hour, and would be paid directly to the student on the day the work is completed. Thank you for anything you can do to help these students earn money for this wonderful opportunity.
