Question IV: There are ten errors in the passage. Find and correct them. (1 pt)

The big majority of students who make well in the

Cambridge Proficiency Examination have learnt to use a

Good monolingual dictionary effectively. Such

Dictionaries provide informations, not just about the

Missings for the words but about their pronunciation and

grammar as well. A student who studies how to use a

dictionary effectively will be able to work independently

for much of the time, and will gain considerable insight

to the workings of the English language. He or she will

be able to confirm to the meanings for the words in a text

where contextual clues are insufficient, pronounce words

accurately by studying the phonological transcriptions,

And use words accurately both when speaking and

Writing. Make sure you make the room for at least one

Good monolingual dictionary on your bookshelf- and

then make sure you use it at a regular basis!

The adage that “a woman’s place is in the home” no longer applies to the dauntless ladies in space. The

first woman in space was a Soviet who orbited the earth with a male companion in 1963 and landed

unscathed after a three-day sojourn aboard a spacecraft. Seemingly, it was inevitable that another Soviet

woman would repeat her feat. The second woman in space was Svetlana Savitskaya, a parachutist and test

pilot, who served as researcher aboard Soviet Soyuz T-7, which had a rendezvous with Salyut 7, the space

station in which the longest manned orbital flight was completed.

Ms. Savitskaya’s aptitude for space travel was patent in her past experience in aviation. Holder of several

women’s records in aviation, she had flown sundry types of aircraft and made over 500 parachute jumps.

Her father was a Soviet Air Force Marshal, and her husband a pilot. Without a qualm she boarded the

spacecraft with her commander, Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Popov, and another rookie astronaut who was

the flight engineer.

Soviet authorities announced that they were looking forward to gaining further information about “weaker

sex” , so-called in the Soviet newspaper Tass, under the stressful conditions of space travel. Sex, however,

is not considered n impediment but rather a benefit in space, for the Soviet have lauded women for their

precision and accuracy in carrying out experiments.

As planned, the American put their first woman in space in mid-1983. Sally Ride was their choice. Ms.

Ride joined the NASA program with five other women and thirty men to train as astronauts in the space

shuttle program. She faces an epoch when space travel will no longer be a glamorous adventure but rather a

commonplace day’s work.

Birds that feed in flocks commonly retire together into roosts. The reasons for roosting communally are not

always obvious, but there are some likely benefits. In winter especially, it is important for birds to keep warm at

night and conserve precious food reserves. One way to do this is to find a sheltered roost. Solitary roosters

shelter in dense vegetation or enter a cavity – horned larks dig holes in the ground and ptarmigan burrow into

snow banks – but the effect of sheltering is magnified by several birds huddling together in the roosts, as wrens,

swifts, brown creepers, bluebirds, and anise do. Body contact reduces the surface area exposed to the cold air, so

the birds keep each other warm. Two kinglets huddling together were found to reduce their heat losses by a

quarter, and three together saved a third of their heat.

The second possible benefit of communal roosts is that they act as "information centers." During the day,

parties of birds will have spread out to forage over a very large area. When they return in the evening some will

have fed well, but others may have found little to eat. Some investigators have observed that when the birds set

out again next morning, those birds that did not feed well on the previous day appear to follow those that did.

The behavior of common and lesser kestrels may illustrate different feeding behaviors of similar birds with

different roosting habits. The common kestrel hunts vertebrate animals in a small, familiar hunting ground,

whereas the very similar lesser kestrel feeds on insects over a large area. The common kestrel roosts and hunts

alone, but the lesser kestrel roosts and hunts in flocks, possibly so one bird can learn from others where to find

insect swarms.

Finally, there is safety in numbers at communal roosts since there will always be a few birds awake at any

given moment to give the alarm. But this increased protection is partially counteracted by the fact that mass

roosts attract predators and are especially vulnerable if they are on the ground. Even those in trees can be

attacked by birds of prey. The birds on the edge are at greatest risk since predators find it easier to catch small

birds perching at the margins of the roost.

1. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. huddling together on the ground with other birds B. building nests in trees

C. burrowing into dense patches of vegetation D. digging tunnels into the snow

Question II: Read the text below and choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D). (1 points)

Question III. Read the passage and choose the best answer from the four options marked A, B, C or D in the

following questions. Identify your answer by writing the corresponding letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet. (1 pts)

Birds that feed in flocks commonly retire together into roosts. The reasons for roosting communally are not

always obvious, but there are some likely benefits. In winter especially, it is important for birds to keep warm at

night and conserve precious food reserves. One way to do this is to find a sheltered roost. Solitary roosters

shelter in dense vegetation or enter a cavity – horned larks dig holes in the ground and ptarmigan burrow into

snow banks – but the effect of sheltering is magnified by several birds huddling together in the roosts, as wrens,

swifts, brown creepers, bluebirds, and anis do. Body contact reduces the surface area exposed to the cold air, so

Page 18: TRƯỜNG THPT LÝ THÁI TỔ - VnDoc.coms1.vndoc.com/data/file/2017/02/02/bo-de-thi-hoc-sinh-gioi-cap... · 12. The upper levels of the Sun’s atmosphere are of very low .....heats

VnDoc - Tải tài liệu, văn bản pháp luật, biểu mẫu miễn phí

18

the birds keep each other warm.

II. READING

Part 1: Read the passage and choose the correct answer for the following questions:

All at once Hazel was coming in through the French windows, pulling off gardening gloves, and Bill wasentering through the door, both at once. So I only had time to take one quick look at her before I turned to facehim. All very confusing. What that first glimpse showed me was that time had thickened her figure but didn’tseem to have made much difference to her face. It still had good skin and youthful outlines. She was holding abunch of roses – must have been cutting them in the garden while waiting for me. The gardening gloves lent adelightfully informal touch. It was quite an entrance, though Bill spoilt it a bit by making his at the same time.

Bill seemed longer and thinner. His tightly massed hair had a tinge of grey. Apart from that, twenty yearshad done nothing to him, except deepen the lines of thoughtfulness that had already, when I knew him, begunto spread across his face. Or was that all? I looked at him again, more carefully, as he looked away from me atHazel. Weren’t his eyes different somehow? More inward looking than ever? Gazing in not merely at histhoughts, but at something else, something he was keeping hidden or perhaps protecting.

Then we were chattering and taking glasses in our hands, and I came back to earth. For the first tenminutes we were all so defensive, so carefully probing, that nobody learnt anything. Bill had forgotten mealtogether, that much was clear. He was engaged in getting to know me from scratch, very cautiously so as notto hit a wrong note, with the object of getting me to contribute a big subscription to his African project. I kepttrying to absorb details about Hazel, but Bill was talking earnestly about African education, and the strain ofappearing to concentrate while actually thinking about his wife proved so great that I decided it would beeasier just to concentrate. So I did. I let him hammer away for about ten more minutes, and then the daughter, who seemed to be acting as parlourmaid, showed in another visitor. Evidently we were to be four at lunch.

1. What effect had time had on Hazel and Bill?

Large animals inhabit the desert have evolved adaptations for reducing the effects of extreme hot. One adaptation is to be light in color, and to reflect the Sun's rays. Desert mammals also depart from the normal mammalian practice of maintaining a constantly body temperature. Instead of try to keep down the body temperature inside the body, what would involve the expenditure of water and energy, desert mammals allow their temperatures rise to what would normally be fever height, and temperatures as high as 46 degree Celsius have been measured in Grant's gazelles. The overheated body cools down during the cold desert night, and indeed the temperature may fall unusual low by dawn, as low as 34 degrees Celsius in the camel. This is a advantage since the heat of the first few hours of daylight absorb in warming up the body. PART 3: READING (6.0 points) I.Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question. (2, 0 points) Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women in business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the number of women entrepreneurs small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account for more than $40 billion in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising throughout the 1990s. As Carolyn Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business Administration, has noted, “The 1970s was the decade of women entering management, and the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the woman entrepreneur.” What are some of the factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn advanced degrees in business and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles. Women are still excluded from most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management consultant, had noted , “ In the 1970s women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard, they could become chairman of the board. Now they have found out that it isn’t going to happen, so they go out on their own.” In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in “women’s” fields – cosmetics and clothing , for example. But this is changing. Consider ASK Computer Systems, a $22 - million - a year computer software business. It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then a housewife with degrees in math and engineering. When Kurtzig founded the business, her first product was software that let weekly newspapers keep tabs on their newspaper carriers – and her office was a bedroom at home, with a shoebox under the bed to hold the company’s cash. After she succeeded with the newspaper software system, she hired several bright computer- science graduates to develop additional programs. When these were marketed and sold, ASK began to grow. It now has 200 employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9 million of stock. Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do. They still face hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money ; the banking and finance world is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most businesses owned by women are still quite small. But the situation is changing; there are likely to be many more Sandra Kurtzig in the years ahead. 1. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Women today are opening more businesses of their own. B. Women are better at small businesses than men are. C. The computer is especially lucrative for women today. D. Women today are better educated than in the past, making them more attractive to the
