Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ and members of Holy Trinity,
This March issue of the Trumpet affords me one last opportunity to say goodbye– which I would
remind you is an old contraction of the phrase “God be with you until we meet again.” it also gives
me the chance to once again say thank you. It has been an amazing privilege to serve you as your
pastor for these past eleven years. And as we look back, there are many accomplishments we can
be proud of. While the level of participation in the worship life and various ministries of the congre-
gation is still far from what I had originally hoped, worship attendance has remained stable despite
the huge loss of active members due to death, infirmity, and relocations.
It has been more difficult to prepare to leave than even I imagined! Some of you have been so
kind and thoughtful of my family and me that I am truly humbled. I can never forget the extraordi-
nary generosity so many of you provided when I first arrived. Still others took time and special effort
to make us feel welcomed and included. I would like to name every family and offer my public
thanks, but dare not for fear of unintentionally offending someone by my possible omission. I have
grown much more attached to this congregation than I ever thought possible. In addition to my sin-
cere thanks I also want to make a request: Trust your Call Committee and your Parish Council
(whom you elected) to make the right choice as God leads them. Pray for them. Encourage them
and believe that God can, and will, work through them to find just the right person.
And, please remember, when the new pastor accepts a call to this church, he or she will also be
making a commitment on behalf of his/her family as well. Upon arrival, the new pastor will have ab-
sorbing work to do– a whole new congregation to learn, and hopefully, prayerfully, to love. Often
the challenge of new responsibilities helps to ease the pain of being uprooted, although not entirely.
Remember he/she will be grieving the loss of past relationships with his/her former parishioners and
neighbors.
Please also remember the rest of his/her family as well. They may be struggling to forget how much
they miss their previous home and friends. Frequently a move is more wrenching for the family than
for the pastor. You can help ease this transition. If you welcome the new family with the same
warmth, love and encouragement that you have shared with me and my family as we leave you,
the pain or sense of loss will be greatly lessened. I know you can; and I even believe you will! (The
positive, newly empowered, spirit among the membership is the work of the Holy Spirit!) Remember
as well that the new minister’s family needs your friendship not only in the first days, but also in the
long term. Just as your pastor’s care will be given throughout the whole time of his/her ministry, so
too will the pastor and his family need your continuing love and support. As we look back over God’s past Providence, let us look forward to his continued care and support. And let us pray, in the
words of a Vesper prayer for his continued guidance:
Lord, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet
untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where
we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through our Lord Jesus
Christ, Amen.
Grace and peace on this journey,
Pastor
One last thing that I really wanted to share with all of you: way back (at least 10 years ago) when
we were doing those healing services for/with Holston Valley Hospital, one of my meditations was
based on this article by Pastor John Ortberg. It’s easy to say “God’s got this”, but often times it’s
hard to believe it. Having come across this article once again while I was cleaning off the book
case in the office, I think it's a timely reminder that God really does have this. I sincerely hope you find these words encouraging.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Council Meeting Summary
February 12, 2018
Pastor Steve Counts – Pastor announced his resignation to the Council. The Council was sad-
dened by the loss for HTLC but joyful for him to answer God’s call to his next chapter. He will
be deeply missed. The Council accepted Pastor Counts resignation and unanimously ap-
proved the time period he requested in his notice of resignation. The Council will conduct a
meeting with Pastor Ben Moravitz, Assistant to the Bishop, on February 15 to discuss next steps
and support from ELCA. We anticipate that a Call Committee will be announced within the
next 60 days. HTLC Congregation will receive a formal written communication from Pastor on
February 13, a verbal update from Council at the February 14 Ash Wednesday service and a
written update via email on February 15.
Top Priorities confirm by Edna Kinner during a teleconference with
Pastor Ben Moravitz on 2/12/18 and supported by Council:
Communications with Bishop and ELCA – February 15, 2018 at 5:30 – 7:00
Identify supply clergy and lay worship leaders for services – Sundays & Lent Season
Identify ongoing Confirmation ministry
Identify Interim Pastor
Lenten Services - We are launching a “Spiritual and Practical Journey of Prayer” throughout our
Season of Lent. It will include Soup Supper and Table Discussion from 5:30-6:30 followed by a
Lenten devotional led by lay member or clergy 6:30-7:00. This will be held in the Fellowship
Hall. Our focus will be on Acts 2:42, “They devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching and
to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” We will offer transportation to any-
one who need a ride. Sue Rasmussen graciously agreed to coordinate these requests.
Stewardship – Committee chairs have been invited to present a short temple talk highlighting
their committee’s activities and challenges, inviting other members of the congregation to
participate on Committees. We are planning to begin this after the Leadership Retreat.
Prayer – The Lenten Devotionals have been distributed. 5 people have signed up for the Prayer
Quilt Ministry.
Congregational Life – A recommendation was submitted to replace the 35+ year old refrigera-
tor. Property has found a replacement and the funds are available in the Congregational
Life Budget. Council unanimously approved the purchase of the replacement refrigerator.
January Congregational Meeting Debrief - Revised format went well along with the use of micro-
phones. The Annual Report was more user friendly with the page numbering and color cod-
ing. A big THANK YOU to Jeannie Fortier for compiling the Reports.
Walt Schaefer’s resignation from Council - We will finalize a replacement at the March Council
Meeting. We will miss Walt at HTLC.
Macular Degeneration is a common eye condition.
Macular Degeneration affects more Americans than cataracts and glaucoma
combined.
Macular Degeneration is incurable.
Macular Degeneration is the leading
cause of vision loss.
Macular Degeneration is caused by damage to the macular ( the small area near
the center of the retina ). The part of the eye responsible for central vision which
controls our ability to read, to drive, to recognize faces, colors and to see objects in
fine detail.
Side or peripheral vision is normal. MD can affect one or both eyes.
Common Symptom : Blurred area near center of vision. Objects may not appear
as bright as they once did.
Risk Factors :
Age 55 & older
Family history of MD
Caucasian race
Smoking
2 Types of Macular Degeneration :
1) Dry, the most common type, 85-90% of cases.
Vitamin and mineral supplements may slow progression of Dry Macular
Degeneration.
2) Wet, very serious type, 10-15% of cases diagnosed.
Eye injections and laser treatment is used to treat further vision loss in Wet
Macular Degeneration.
The early and intermediate stages of Macular Degeneration start without symptoms,
That is why it is imperative to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam once a year
by an Eye Care Professional.

COFFEE ANYBODY??
We all love our coffee and snacks be-
tween services. The Gathering Room
fellowship is great and we love to see it.
The on-going expense of providing
“goodies” can begin to stress the
budgets for Evangelism and Congregational Life. So, to help cover expenses
of supplies, etc., we encourage you to occasionally donate loose change or a
dollar or two to help defray the weekly cost. You’ll note a CONTRIBUTION BOX
on the coffee table for this purpose.
Thanks for your support.
By the way, any suggestions for improvement are welcomed.
