cooked simply because it was easier than going out. Now, it’s just as easy to do both. So, whether we stay in or go out, it’s only dependent on our wishes.”

“We’ve always known that the eateries in our community were a big part of delivering that iconic neighborhood feeling,” says Craig Brown, Dining Director at Shannondell.” He adds, “You know, those special places where the staff doesn’t take you for granted, where they know who you are, what you like and they always greet you with

a smile. That’s what we’ve done at Shannondell. We’ve created a neighborhood where each dining venue treats you like a local business dependent on earning your business every day. And it shows.”

Attention to dining detail is duly noted by the residents. “When we have guests come to visit, you sense the

Dining Out Next Door

Quick, name a half a dozen great restaurants within a three-

minute walk from your front door.

That’s what we thought.

Unless you live in midtown Manhattan (and we both know that you don’t), chances are that your favorite dining out spots are more than just a hop, skip and jump away – as in a “find-your-keys, bundle-up, brave-the-traffic, find-a-parking-spot,” car ride away.

Now imagine being able to choose, daily, from a Bakery, Bistro, brick oven pizza, Deli and salad bar, buffet, and white linen table service

restaurants – all just steps from your front door. Better still, all are accessible via climate-controlled walkways, so that even during the harshest winter conditions (take a look outside), your stroll is as enjoyable as your meal.

No, this isn’t a luxury cruise ship, although that’s a good guess. It’s Shannondell at Valley Forge.

With not one, but two 110,000 square foot clubhouses offering a half dozen dining options, Shannondell residents enjoy the convenience of top-quality neighborhood eateries, right next door, without ever setting foot outside.

“The dining program at Shannondell was one of the deciding factors for us.” claims John and Barbara, former residents of Wayne. “Sure, we had our favorites in our old neighborhood, but many times we stayed at home and

neighborhood eateries are a hit

Chocolate Angel Food Cake with Grand Marnier Strawberries

A favorite of Shannondell residents, this dessert will satisfy your sweet tooth but won’t leave you feeling like you’ve overindulged. The strawberries remind you that spring is just around the corner.

Cake Flour, 5 oz Cocoa Powder, Dutch Process, 1 ½ oz Baking Powder, 1 Tsp Egg Whites, 14 oz Confectioners Sugar, 7 oz Cream of Tartar, 1 Tsp Whole Butter, melted & cooled, 1 oz Vanilla Extract, 2 Tsp Strawberries, Fresh, sliced, 2 cups Grand Marnier, 1 oz Sugar, 2 Tbs

1. Combine strawberries, sugar & Grand Marnier and refrigerate. 2. Sift flour, cocoa & baking powder together twice. Reserve. 3. Beat egg whites until thick & foamy. 4. Slowly add Tartar. Beat to medium peaks. 5. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the dry ingredients, gently, leaving as much volume as possible. 6. Add butter and vanilla and fold in. 7. Pour batter into a greased 10” spring form pan lined with parchment. 8. Bake at 325’F until cake pulls away from side of pan (~30 min). 9. Allow to cool. Remove from pan and cut into slices. 10. Garnish with sliced fresh strawberries and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Retirees are saying goodbye to shuffleboard and hello to Wii.

What is Wii?

It’s an electronic video gaming system from Nintendo that connects to your TV. It’s revolutionized electronic team play and has greatly expanded the appeal of video games among older adults.

On any given afternoon at Shannondell and retirement communities across the country you’ll likely find a group gathered around colorful big screen TVs, wireless control units (and beverages) in-hand, mimicking the movements of rolling a 6-pound bowling ball down the alley at their local lanes. Only with Wii bowling,

In fact, the Wii version of bowling has become so popular that there’s even a National Senior League Wii bowling competition dedicated to residents of retirement communities. Competitions include three seasons with community teams across the country competing in conferences via score tabulations and webcam viewing to determine a National Champion. And regardless of which team comes out on top, participants will tell you that the entertainment and social value is reward enough. As one bowler writes, “In the end, Wii all win.”
