Federal Government’s 30% tax bonus a boon for truck buyers

The Federal Government has provided a temporary business tax break designed to boost business investment and bolster economic activity. This $2.7 billion business tax break is a key element of the Government’s $42 billion Nation Building and Jobs Plan.

Assets eligible for the allowance are new tangible depreciating assets greater than $10,000 which are

purchased before the end of June 2009 and in possession and ready for use by 30 June 2010.

As an example, a business that buys and takes possession of an Isuzu purchased for $60,000 before the end of June 2009 can claim an additional 30% deduction in its 2008/2009 tax return – that equates to a substantial $18,000. For purchasers of Western Stars or MAN’s, the figures are even more impressive.

The additional 30% deduction on a $225,000 Western Star equates to a staggering $67,500.

These one off tax breaks are potentially of huge benefit to truck purchasers – providing the purchase occurs before 30th June 2009. It may be a cliché, but there really hasn’t been a better time to buy.

For similar purchases in the period 1st July 2009 to 31st December 2009, an additional 10% deduction will apply.

The tax bonus will apply to tangible assets used in carrying on a business, for which a deduction is available under the core provisions of Division 40 (Capital Allowances) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Please note that this information should be viewed as a broad guide only. Please check with your financial consultant and accountant to ensure you are eligible for these deductions prior to entering into a purchase agreement.

Big impression made at Australian Construction Expo (ACE)

The 6th Australian Construction Equipment Expo – ACE 2009, was held in late February at Sandown Racecourse.

The bi annual Expo is billed as Victoria’s most comprehensive professional trade

exhibition for the earthmoving, construction and allied industries.

An impressive stand made many ACE attendees stop and look at the extensive range of Isuzus on display. Many new

contacts were made over the 3 days, whilst many of our existing customers stopped to chat and review the latest Isuzu line up which included a number of specially priced ‘ready-to-work’ models.

The recently introduced FX range has expanded with the introduction of a long wheelbase variant for the FXY and FXZ models.

The FX range is positioned in the market between the current FV models and the Giga range.

Built on the Giga chassis, FX models are fitted with Isuzu’s all-new wide F Series cabin and benefit form the extensive safety and driver comfort features recently introduced in the all new F-Series models.

Vince Brullo – Owner of Planet Towing.

3 TRUCK FORCE | APRIL 2009

With their distinctive colour scheme and signage, it’s hard to miss Planet Towing trucks out and about on Melbourne’s roads. Owner Vince Brullo takes pride in the fact that he’s never advertised, but instead lets his trucks ‘do the talking.’

And it must be working, because in 20 years Planet Towing has gone from one truck to six and business just keeps on coming. Vince believes that it is a combination of professionalism, courtesy and his stunningly presented trucks that have been the cornerstones for his business success.

Whilst Planet Towing is based in Melbourne’s North Western suburbs, the trucks cover both metro and regional areas and even travel interstate occasionally. The majority of the company’s business is generated through associations with a number of major

insurance companies.

Over the years Vince has operated a number of different truck brands including Isuzu. But it was the release of the New Gen Isuzus that really caught Vince’s eye. “The New Gen models appeared so advanced with many innovative features, I just had to take a closer look,” said Vince.

Vince met Will Rideg at Westar Footscray and took up Will’s offer of a comprehensive test drive. “Will was great, very professional and really knew the product well,” said Vince. “I was really impressed with the truck. Cab comfort, ride and visibility were all excellent – it was just so advanced compared to other trucks,” Vince added.

However, before committing to a purchase, Vince wanted to have a final look around all the different truck brands available just to be sure.

“The Melbourne Truck

Show was the ideal venue for this exercise as I could see and compare all the different models under the one roof,” Vince said.

However, after walking around the show it didn’t take long for Vince to realise that the New Gen Isuzu was clearly head and shoulders above the rest, and Vince duly placed his order for a manual FSD 700 at the Isuzu stand.

Because Vince wanted a custom built tray fitted, the truck was sourced from South Australia and delivered to Aherns in Adelaide for fitment of a fully remote controlled tilt and slide tray – one of the

most advanced tilt trays on the market.

The truck was then delivered to Litz & Transcolour in Melbourne, where Vince was personally involved in giving the truck its exclusive ‘four purple pearls’ colour scheme utilizing the ‘wet-on-wet’ paint application process.

Since taking delivery Vince has been very pleased with the Isuzu’s performance. “I’m very happy and very impressed with the truck – it’s as good as I expected,” said Vince.

Keep a look out for Planet Towing’s latest Isuzu – it’s not hard to spot!

Leading 3rd party logistics supplier, the Glen Cameron Group, has been trialling the latest model MAN TGS 400, and the results so far have been impressive.

The truck has been used on both metropolitan and intrastate runs towing different loads including dry goods and refrigerated products.

Fleet Manager Felix Borg worked for MAN many years ago and is impressed with this latest incarnation of the product. “They’ve come a long way – this latest truck is smooth, comfortable and importantly returning excellent

fuel consumption figures,” he said. The fuel consumption has averaged out at 2.6 kilometres per litre.

Felix also heaped praise on the automatic transmission that he said had particularly smooth shifts and was more ‘intuitive’ than other auto transmissions.

His drivers also talk favourably about the new MAN. Comfort, driveability, handling and the smoothness of the auto box are all recurring themes. However, the quietness of the cab is something that really impresses – this new model is 25% quieter than the previous model which was

already acknowledged as being significantly quieter than other trucks.

Owner Glen Cameron who has a ‘hands on’ approach to running his business has also found time to hop in and take the MAN for a spin and is equally impressed.

The truck has been loaned through Patterson Cheney Truck Centre, Dandenong.

“Trialling the MAN with Camerons and its diverse range of operations allows us to obtain first hand feedback as to the performance of the truck in day to day operations, Sales Manager Paul Dinicol said. “This in turn allows us to tweak the specification to address any issues that may arise,” he added.

The entire new MAN TGS/TGX range is now on display at all Patterson Cheney/Westar branches.

Quicks Freight Express is a family owned business that has been operating for over 20 years carting a broad range of general freight at both a local and interstate level.

Quicks was formed around 20 years ago by co-owner Ross Quick, using just a single truck. The owners commitment to providing the highest levels of customer service has resulted in Quicks expanding steadily, to the extent that the company now operates a fleet of 12 trucks.

Although Ross is heavily involved in the day to day running of the business, he also spends much of his time during the summer months with the CFA where he is Captain of the Glen Park brigade. Ross was extensively involved with the battle to contain fires in the recent bush fires that swept Southern Victoria earlier this year.

In addition to local work, Quicks Freight Express has runs to the main capital cities of Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. It was these routes that prompted Quicks to look for a heavy duty highway truck that would cope with the rigours and demands of these long haul interstate runs.

Ross and the guys took

advantage of a Western Star demo unit that was provided by Mark Englezos of Westar Campbellfield, and it didn’t take long for them to be convinced that this was the right truck for the business.

However, it wasn’t just the truck that impressed them all, it was the help from Mark that really clinched the deal. “Fantastic, terrific,” are words Ross uses to sum up the purchase experience. “Mark worked hard to make sure we spec’d the truck up correctly – he bent over backwards to get things right,” Ross went onto say. “Any issues that we did have were fixed by Mark quickly without fuss,” he added.

The final spec called for a short bonnet FXB model fitted with the Stratosphere sleeper cab and running a Detroit EGR 14 litre engine – ideal for B-Double application.

Proof of Mark’s commitment

to outstanding customer service was on the day of delivery. “When the truck was delivered in November last year it was absolutely spot on”, Ross said.

Since entering service the truck hasn’t missed a beat. “Everyone who drives it, including me thinks it’s pretty darn good,” said Ross. “The fact that it’s compact on the outside yet has a very roomy ‘walk-thru’ sleeper cab is a real bonus. It’s also very comfortable – I’m really happy with it,” Ross went onto say.

“We’ll definitely be looking

at Western Stars for any future additions to our fleet,” Ross added.

The all important winter checkA change of season invariably brings about a significant change in

driving and operating conditions for truck drivers.

Sun glare, dust and bushfires have been the order of the day for some months now, buts this is soon to change to typical winter conditions. Grey skies and earlier nightfall will cut visibility and wet roads will create unexpected hazards.

While drivers will need to change their driving style and approach the task with extra care, the truck too will need some attention.

The changed temperatures and operating conditions can affect performance and it is strongly recommended that before too much time has passed, operators run through a checklist and get their truck readied for cooler and wetter times.

It goes without saying that safety items are of paramount importance.

One small oversight or a little too much wear on a critical component can have disastrous consequences in winter conditions.

Take a look through the checklist below and make sure all the items are checked and action taken where necessary. And, of course, safe driving!
