How do carrier con-tracts impact a shortage or lease operators?

According to my re-search, there is a signifi-cant difference between the top and bottom carrier contracts. In the sixteen years of tracking, the net difference actually dou-bled. This means if the difference between top and bottom carriers in 1996 was $100, then in 2012 it was over $200. This phe-nomenon would be one of the many results of de-regulation. Competition relentlessly pushes market prices through supply and demand.

The net difference does not always imply something negative. The top carriers actually paid more while the worst car-riers paid less (net), so for some it benefited while others were left in the cold. If someone talks to the old timers they often hear about the good old days, but were they really all that good? They claim the margins were much better, but were they re-ally?

If the margins have de-creased as much as some old timers have implied, then the industry should have seen a huge drop in lease operators over the last couple decades. Was there?

Turnover in the trucking industry is anywhere from 5-15% of all operators. They are either in the pro-cess of leaving the industry or entering it. For several years about 15% of opera-tors left the industry while only 5% entered. Over the years the net number of operators logically de-creased. Then for several years 15% of operators were new to the industry while only 5% were leav-ing. The net numbers of operators rise and fall like waves. Though operators definitely have left the in-dustry, many have entered or returned.

I have interviewed thousands of operators and drivers in the last two decades, conducted na-tional surveys, read a lot of industry material and talked with many other

accountants and indus-try recruiters. It is my understanding that a sig-nificant amount of drivers and operators (if given an option) would not drive truck any more (estimates as high as 50%). So why do they stay? In the end it’s the predictability of their return on effort com-bined with a perceived (or real) lack of viable options. In other words, they don’t think they have any other choice.

The numbers seem to be much higher in com-pany drivers than in op-erators, but there is still a significant amount of operators who (given a reasonable offer) would choose to come off the road. The amount of op-erators searching to sell varies considerably from year to year, and even season to season, but it seems to range from 20-35%. This means a very significant percentage of drivers and operators are presently not fully com-mitted to the industry.

Though operators only represent about 10% of all

truck drivers, they do rep-resent a significant force within the industry. They tend to hold much stron-ger opinions and may dis-proportionately influence perception within the in-dustry. Many company drivers respect operators so much they even tend to view them as industry leaders.

It is generally known that operators are 25% more productive than com-pany drivers. This is the common understanding because operators have a vested interest in their own success, pushing them-selves more than many drivers would. Loss of too many operators would cre-ate a disproportionate level of stress within the indus-try.

Since the concentration of operators is so diverse between carriers the im-pact would be difficult to predict. The carriers with a small percentage of op-erators may hardly even notice, while carriers with a high percentage may bor-der on collapse.

Even though the po-tential impact of operator loss may be significant, most carrier owners and industry leaders are not concerned. They have ac-customed themselves to living with dire warnings of industry collapse for de-cades. b

Extending its leadership in the heavy-duty, earth-moving tire segment,

Bridgestone Americas recently announced the opening of its first giant off road radial tire plant. Based in Aiken County, South Carolina, the 1.5 million-square-foot manufacturing facility produces various off road radial tire products used to equip heavy haul trucks in mining and aggre-gates applications. A leader in off road radial tire tech-nology, the new off road radial tire plant strength-ens Bridgestone’s ability to meet the needs of its global customer base in this key segment.

Kazuhisa Nishigai, COO and Board Member of Bridgestone Corporation, and Gary Garfield, Presi-dent and CEO of Bridges-tone Americas, were joined at a grand opening cer-emony by South Carolina State Senator Nikki Setzler; South Carolina State Rep-

resentative Bill Clyburn; South Carolina State Repre-sentative Bill Hixon; South Carolina State Represen-tative Bill Taylor; Aiken County Council Chairman Ronnie Young; and Ai-ken, Edgefield and Saluda Counties Economic Devel-opment Partnership Presi-dent & CEO Will Williams.

“Bridgestone has made significant investments in technology and training to ensure we are producing the world’s leading off road ra-dial tires in North America,” said Nishigai. “We remain highly committed to our mining customers around the globe and will continue to make the right invest-ments for this important seg-ment of our business.”

In 2011, Bridgestone announced a planned $970 million investment to build the company’s first U.S.-based off road radial tire plant, as well as ex-pand production capacity at Bridgestone’s steel cord

manufacturing facilities in Clarksville, Tennessee, and Saga, Japan. The opening of Bridgestone’s new Ai-ken County Off Road Ra-dial Tire Plant completes the largest portion of this planned investment. The Clarksville and Saga loca-tions are suppliers of the Aiken County Off Road Ra-dial Tire Plant, as steel cord is a key component used to build large and ultra-large off road radial tires.

“Engineering large and ultra-large mining tires is a highly technical process, and Bridgestone has a long tradition of being a leader in bringing these tires to market. The opening of a new off road radial tire plant in South Carolina is a strategic business decision that will give Bridgestone the capacity to build these tires domestically and improve our supply sys-tems globally,” continued Garfield. “Long term, the mining segment will grow,

and we are now better-positioned to respond more quickly, efficiently and re-liably to the needs of our customers.”

Bridgestone’s Off Road Radial Tire Plant is the second tire manufacturing plant Bridgestone has built in Aiken County, South Carolina. The company has operated a passenger tire facility in Graniteville since 1998. Approximately 350 people now work at the new Aiken County Off Road Radial Tire Plant, and Bridgestone expects to cre-ate an additional 200 po-sitions when the location reaches full production in the next two to three years. At present, there are ap-proximately 2,000 people working at Bridgestone’s two tire plants in Aiken County.

“South Carolina and Bridgestone have a long and successful history of working together, and we are excited to celebrate this next chapter in our grow-ing partnership,” said Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina. “Bridgestone is a great South Carolina company, employing thou-sands of our citizens and playing an active and posi-tive role in their local com-

munity. We look forward to seeing the new ORR plant reach full production and bring even more jobs to Aiken County.”

The new Aiken County Off Road Radial Tire Plant was constructed with many sustainable features and materials in alignment with Bridgestone’s global commitment to the envi-ronment. The plant is built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design) Silver construction specifications. In addition, sustainable and advanced technologies from Fires-tone Building Products, a subsidiary of Bridges-tone Americas, were used throughout the facility. The new plant relies on Ultra-Ply TPO roofing, ISO 95+ insulation, UnaFoam Insu-lated Metal Wall Panels, pavers and geomembrane for retention ponds and water harvesting areas. b

Bridgestone Opens First US Giant Off Road Radial Tire Manufacturing Facility

Results of the Q4 2014 Fleet Sentiment Report survey by CK Commercial Vehicle Research (CKCVR) show solid fleet purchasing plans for the first half of 2015 Class 8 deliveries.

The Q4 FSR buying in-dex (which measures the number of fleets planning to place orders for trucks and trailers in the next 3 months) is up 2% year-over-year.

Even though the num-bers are strong, fleets have reported that their hands

are tied when it comes to adding capacity because of the lack of qualified driv-ers.

Chris Kemmer, consul-tant at CKCVR, said, “over and over we hear from the fleets reporting ‘we’d buy more equipment if we had more drivers’. Most are in a good place financially with plenty of available freight but without driv-ers, additional trucks don’t make sense. Replacement demand for the time being remains strong.” b

Owner-operator Mark Tricco of Bison Transport is a hero. He’s an instruc-tor and leader to other drivers. He’s an inspira-tion to his family. Over the years, he’s overcome the most extreme chal-lenges and even crisis to deliver your freight. And for his dedication and ser-vice throughout his amaz-ing 33-year career, Tricco is now the Canadian Na-tional Driver of the Year.

The award, established by the Canadian Trucking Alliance and sponsored by Volvo Trucks Canada, is the highest honour bestowed upon a truck driver in Canada who has maintained a collision-free driving record and demonstrated exemplary professionalism both on and off the road.

With over 3 million miles under his belt, Tric-co, who calls Brandon, Man. home, has driven various types of equip-ment and has hauled lum-ber, heavy machinery, reefer and general freight – all collision free.

“He is a professional driver who can drive anything you put him in and do it perfectly,” says Don Strueber, President of Bison Transport. “His knowledge and experi-ence as well as his com-passion for others is what makes him truly a top professional driver.”

Over the years this driver has received nu-merous commendations for his outstanding driv-ing skills and courtesy to other motorists. As an owner-op, he can perform most of the truck mainte-nance and repairs himself. He is a trainer and mentor to other drivers at Bison.

He learned early on in his career about safety vigilance and the price that can be paid for neg-ligence. As a new driver,

he once came across the scene of a horrific acci-dent where fatalities were involved. Being one of the first on scene, he im-mediately jumped in and started administering aid. He remained there for seven hours assisting the OPP. He says that these unfortunate incidents do occur and he makes it his mission to ensure he is never the cause of one.

Co-workers describe him as easy-going, always chatty and someone you can always go to for ad-vice. Dispatchers, fellow drivers or even company managers frequently seek him out for his views on a situation.

Tricco has given much of himself to the indus-try, but never at the cost of family. While on the road, he is always in com-munication with his wife Melody and three adult children – evidenced by

his cell phone bill.In the last few years a

close family member has faced some health issues – a situation that is difficult enough for anybody to deal with, but especially for someone who works on the open road away from home for days at a time. Still, he has contin-ued to work through this tough time and manages to be there for appoint-ments and to provide emotional support.

He says that fortunately for him, he still has the love of his wife Melody, who is his biggest cheerleader. To-gether they have overcome long distances, tough fam-ily situations and varying life crises.

“There are countless professional truck drivers in Canada, but few who have achieved what Mark has under such trying cir-cumstances,” says CTA President Bradley. “On behalf of CTA and the other provincial trucking associations, I am proud to honour such as coura-geous, dedicated profes-sional as Canada’s top truck driver.”

The CTA-Volvo Trucks Canada National Truck Driver of the Year is se-lected among all of the year’s provincial Driver of the Year recipients by a panel of judges made up of representatives from Transport Canada, the Traffic Industry Research Foundation and the Cana-da Safety Council. b

It’s the Altman way. The renowned nurs-ery is known for its due diligence and attention to detail to create beau-tiful and robust plants and flowers. It’s what’s enabled the Vista, Calif.-based nursery to create some of the most sought-after specialty plants in the country. Its cactus collection alone is North America’s largest. Over-all, the company is the second largest producer in the US - up from No. 5 in 2013.

Altman’s has grown from a backyard opera-tion, started by Ken and Deena Altman in 1985, to one where seven growing facilities, from California to Florida, raise more than 1,000 varieties of cactus and succulents, along with flowers and flower-ing shrubs, vegetables and bedding plants.

Throughout Southern California, medium duty Kenworth T270s move

loads of Altman Plants to big box stores (Home Depot, Lowes, and Wal-Mart) along with tradi-tional home and garden locations. Altman Plants’ two Southern California nurseries - located in San Diego and Riverside counties, are the compa-ny’s largest. The River-side facility alone boasts 670 acres of growing terrain, while San Diego has over 350 acres, along with 3 million square feet of greenhouse space.

To support the San Diego and Riverside fa-cilities, a fleet of more than 100 trucks transport plants during its peak season (March through June). That includes 42 medium duty trucks, which handle deliver-ies of up to 150 miles round-trip throughout Southern California. Eight Class 8 trucks, on lease, are used for plant distribution throughout the Lower 48. An addi-

tional 60 rental trucks (a mix of medium duty and long-haul) finish off dis-tribution during the busy season.

Recently the company completed more ‘due dil-igence’ when it decided to upgrade its short-haul fleet. “We did a tremen-dous amount of home-work in deciding which medium duty truck would lead us into the future,” said Jim Hessler, Altman Plants Southern California general man-ager. “We looked at all the different brands and narrowed it down to three finalists. We then brought those trucks to our facility for a test drive and walkaround with our drivers, main-tenance supervisor, and operations folks. The clear-cut winner was Kenworth’s T270. We were so impressed we have decided to stan-dardize on that model as we move forward.”

The company took delivery of its initial 12 Kenworth T270s in the spring from Inland Ken-worth - El Cajon. The trucks are outfitted with 24-foot aluminium boxes and are powered by the PACCAR PX-7 engine rat-ed at 240 hp, and driven through Allison 5-speed transmissions.

According to Hessler, reliability, driver friend-liness, ease of service, and dealer support all came into play in the se-lection process.

“It was clear that the Kenworth T270 was built with the driver in mind,” said Hessler. “It’s a very comfortable truck and one that’s easy to get in and out of. Each truck could make just one de-livery to a big-box store, or it could make 10 stops in a day. So, it’s impor-tant to us to give our drivers a truck that’s comfortable and one they want to drive, and we feel Kenworth is that truck.”

During the walkaround of each of the contesting trucks, Hessler said the drivers not only sat-in and com-pared cab appointments;

they looked at the dif-ferences between trucks when it came to pre-trip inspections. “They pointed out how all the fluid checks were on one side of the Kenworth - little things like that are important to drivers,” Hessler said. “Checks are a necessary evil and if a truck is well thought out and designed right; it makes life easier for our drivers and our ser-vice technicians. We like that.”

Since the Kenworths are domiciled at Alt-man’s Riverside and San Diego facilities, the company works with both Inland Kenworth’s Fontana and El Cajon locations. “We have the utmost confidence in them,” said Hessler. “In-land Kenworth took the time to have its service manager meet with us. We discussed everything from parts availability, to parts costs and service support from the service department. We came away impressed.”

From the operational side, Hessler said Alt-man’s plans to run the trucks with no end in sight. “We don’t have

a trade schedule and I fully expect these trucks to be running long after I’m gone,” joked Hes-sler. “I know Kenworth has a high residual value which speaks volumes about their longevity and reliability. And I know first-hand from previous jobs how well Kenworths hold up and the appeal they have to drivers. Once, we had a 14-year old Kenworth among several newer trucks. Even though it was old, all the drivers wanted to drive the Kenworth. That stuck with me.”

Behind the wheel of the Kenworth T270s are the company’s safest drivers. “Since everyone wanted to drive the new trucks, we had to come up with a fair way to de-cide who gets to drive them,” related Hessler.

It was a fair and cre-ative approach. Hessler reviewed all driving re-cords and those with the most accident-free miles got the keys to the Ken-worth. “This way it was a reward for those drivers, and an incentive for the others. It was a win-win for both the drivers and the company.” b

duced in China for Chinese front-end loaders and other off-highway equipment. Spicer Rui Ma products are an affordable, alternative solution for customers who are seeking an optimized blend of product features, performance, dependabil-ity, and cost.

Spicer Rui Ma series transmissions use proven internal components from the extensive line of Spicer powershift transmissions already available for the off-highway market. High-energy-capacity forward and reverse clutches, adap-tive clutch modulation, and helical gears deliver a robust transmission with improved shift quality.

At Bauma China, Dana will showcase its Spicer Rui Ma TZL16 RM trans-mission, which in recent tests demonstrated up to a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy.Spicer TZL Series Transmissions

Dana offers two Spic-er TZL Series powershift transmissions specifi-cally engineered to supply Chinese-made front-end loaders with higher fuel ef-ficiency, increased produc-tivity, longer equipment life, and compliance with stringent emissions regula-tions.

These transmissions of-fer enhanced productivity

for high-performance ap-plications while delivering better ergonomic comfort and enhanced operator control.Spicer TE Series Transmissions

Dana will also present Spicer TE Series power-shift transmissions with advanced electronic con-trols. These transmissions are specially engineered for premium front-end loaders in Europe and North Amer-ica to deliver higher input power capability; reduced maintenance; smoother, quieter operation; and bet-ter fuel economy. High-ca-pacity clutches, gears, and bearings ensure longer life, while high-efficiency lock-up and freewheel torque converters are available as additional options.

Spicer TE Series trans-missions provide superior shift quality through high-energy-capacity forward and reverse clutches, adap-tive clutch modulation, and helical gears. Select mod-els will feature an optional technology package that includes a five-speed gear-box with lock up, which enables direct drive even at low speeds and reduces fuel consumption by up to 10 percent.

Spicer TE Series trans-missions are managed by Dana’s new series of lead-free electronic transmission

controls, which offer wider systems integration through upgraded software and en-hanced hardware capacity, flexibility, and expandabil-ity. These improvements will enable Spicer trans-missions to offer the latest features such as eco-drive, power drive, and next-gen-eration overlap control.Spicer Hydrostatic Transmissions

While not commonly used on off-highway equip-ment made in China today, hydrostatic transmission technology is drawing increasing interest from Chinese manufacturers of small front-end loaders and other off-highway applica-tions due to its enhanced efficiency and performance characteristics.

Dana is the market lead-er in hydrostatic transmis-sion technology and offers options that supply excel-lent ratio coverage and enhanced vehicle perfor-mance. Bridgestone Americas recently announced the findings of a recent sur-vey among Canadians highlighting the winter preparedness of drivers across the country, and winter tire usage ranks high on the list. Accord-ing to a survey commis-sioned by Bridgestone and fielded by Harris Poll in September and Octo-ber 2014, nearly three in five Canadians (58 percent) have installed or plan to install winter tires this season, com-pared to only 21 percent of Americans.

Safety was the num-ber one reason why Ca-nadians indicate they plan to install or have already installed winter tires on their vehicle (76 percent). Performance and geography were other leading factors in-fluencing winter tire us-age among Canadians. Two-thirds (68 percent) said they install winter tires because they per-form better than other tires in winter condi-tions. Half of Canadians (49 percent) said they in-stall winter tires because they live in an area that receives a lot of snow.

“We are pleased to learn that most Canadians are making the switch to winter tires, and we wish more Americans would follow the lead of their

neighbors to the north,” said Robert Saul, Senior Product Manager, Bridge-stone Americas. “Con-ditions on the road can change rapidly in the win-ter season. Winter tires are a smart choice be-cause they have special-ized technology that pro-vides increased traction, braking and handling on cold, icy and snow-cov-ered roads.”

While all tire rub-ber stiffens as tem-peratures drop below freezing, the latest generations of winter tires maintain their elasticity even at ex-tremely low tempera-tures. All-season tires are designed with both winter and summer performance in mind, but do not offer maxi-mum performance in either season.

Among Canadians who have driven in a winter storm, 8 in 10 (82 percent) drive more cautiously; 75 percent allow more time to get to where they’re going; and 63 percent mini-mize their driving to include only trips they must take. In addition:• 42 percent of Cana-

dians have witnessed or been involved in an accident caused by winter conditions

• 35 percent of Cana-dians have missed

a holiday gathering they were planning to drive to at some point due to winter weather

• A third (33 percent) of Canadians expect to face winter weath-er while en route to holiday celebrations this yearOverall, Canadians

take winter prepared-ness seriously with 86 percent stating they make an effort to pre-pare their vehicle for winter driving by hav-ing an emergency kit in their vehicle and 86 percent say they check vehicle performance features such as tire pressure (69 percent), fluid levels (68 per-cent) and windshield wipers (66 percent) to prepare their vehicle for winter. Ice scrap-ers (68 percent) and jumper cables (52 per-cent) are the most pop-ular items Canadian driver’s store in their emergency kits in their cars during the winter months.

When it comes to preparing a vehicle for winter weather, Bridgestone suggests remembering the four B’s — battery, brakes, blades and Blizzak winter tires. Have an automotive service technician test the ve-hicle battery, check the brakes and inspect wiper blades to make sure all are in good working order, in addi-tion to installing win-ter tires. b

Bendix Commercial Ve-hicle Systems LLC contin-ues advancing its commit-ment to North American commercial fleet safety through its industry lead-ing development and manufacture of active safety and braking system technologies. Prime Inc. is supporting its commitment to safety by adding Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes and the Bendix TABS-6 Advanced trailer roll stabil-ity system to its highway safety efforts.

The leading fleet is equipping 2,500 new re-frigerated trailers with the Bendix ADB22X and Ben-dix TABS-6 Advanced safe-ty technologies. Delivery is taking place over the next nine months. The trailers are manufactured by Util-ity Trailer Manufacturing Company.

Prime Inc. is one of North America’s most suc-cessful refrigerated, flat-bed, and tanker trucking companies. Founded in

1970 and based in Spring-field, Missouri, Prime ser-vices an expanding inter-national customer base.

Prime specs other Ben-dix safety products as well, including the Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Pro-gram full-stability system and Bendix Wingman Ad-vanced – A Collision Miti-gation Technology, on its Peterbilt, Kenworth, and International Class 8 trac-tors. In addition, Prime provides AutoVue Lane Departure Warning (LDW) System from Bendix CVS on all its tractors, which number more than 5,000.

“Our commitment to safety – one of Prime’s core principles – was a key factor in our choice of Bendix technologies,” said Paul Higgins, director of maintenance for Prime Inc. “Bendix shares that corporate philosophy, and we’re pleased to count them as a valued partner in the critical work of helping to make our fleet and the

highways safer.”The patented Bendix

ADB22X air disc brake is a lightweight design that significantly reduces stop-ping distance and offers significantly longer life and faster service times than drum brakes. Other ad-vantages include a car-like feel; straight, stable stops; and virtually no brake fade or degradation of stopping power.

Bendix Spicer Founda-tion Brake LLC (BSFB), a joint venture between Ben-dix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Prod-ucts, LLC, manufactures the Bendix ADB22X at its wheel-end production fa-cility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. BSFB has manu-factured more than 750,000 Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes since it began pro-duction in 2005.

The Bendix TABS-6 Ad-vanced trailer roll stability system combines antilock braking

(ABS) with a set of trail-er sensors, which monitor stability and can quickly and automatically trig-ger braking interventions when conditions that may lead to a rollover are de-tected.

Available in single-channel (SC) and multi-channel (MC) configura-tions, TABS-6 Advanced is compatible with both spring-ride and air-ride sus-pensions, and delivers so-lutions suitable for a wide range of fleet needs. The Bendix TABS-6 Advanced system can work with a variety of trailer electrical requirements, handling be-tween 8 and 32 volts with-out a separate power con-verter. Bendix has supplied more than 375,000 trailer ABS and roll stability sys-tems to the market.

“Prime has long been committed to providing safe vehicles for its driv-ers, and Bendix is proud to be part of that effort,” said Scott Burkhart, Bendix vice president – sales, market-ing, and business develop-ment.

Burkhart emphasized that Bendix safety technol-ogies are designed to sup-plement safe driving prac-tices and are not intended

to enable or encourage ag-gressive driving. Responsi-bility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at all times.

“No commercial vehicle safety technology replaces the most important safety components of all: skilled, alert professional driv-ers exercising safe driving habits, as well as continu-ous, comprehensive driver training,” Burkhart said.

Bendix’s efforts to pro-mote safe commercial ve-

hicle operation, along with its evergrowing portfolio of technology developments, help it deliver in areas criti-cal to fleets’ success: safety, product performance, val-ue, and post-sales support. Bendix aims to help fleets and drivers lower total cost of vehicle ownership and strengthen return on investment in equipment, technology, and training, which leads to safer high-ways for everyone on the road. b

Prime Inc. Further Enhances Fleet Safety With Bendix Advanced Technologies

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, the North American leader in the development and man-ufacture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, is the Blue Bird Corporation 2014 Supplier of the Year.

Blue Bird, widely rec-ognized for its manu-facture of school buses engineered for safety, re-cently presented the 2014 Supplier Awards during its annual Supplier Con-ference held in Macon, Georgia. With more than 390 production suppliers, the company recognized 10 distinguished suppliers for their commitment to quality, innovation, ser-vice, and timely delivery.

Blue Bird chose Ben-dix for the highest award. A supplier for several Blue Bird wheel-end of-ferings, Bendix strategi-cally partnered with Blue Bird to launch the Bendix ADB22X air disc brake in 2014. Blue Bird cred-its Bendix’s outstanding dedication to innovation and technology for the tremendous success of the product launch.

The patented Bendix ADB22X technology is a lightweight air disc brake design that significantly reduces stopping distance and offers straight, stable stops with a car-like feel and virtually no brake fade or degradation of stop-ping power. In addition, the Bendix ADB22X offers twice the lining life, four times the rotor life, and half the service time of comparable drum brakes.

“Bendix is truly hon-ored to receive this pres-tigious award from Blue Bird Corporation,” said Scott Burkhart, Bendix Vice

President – Sales, Market-ing, and Business Develop-ment. “We value our col-laboration with Blue Bird and look forward to con-tinuing to work together to provide innovative, reli-able, and high-quality solu-tions for Blue Bird buses. We are proud to partner with Blue Bird to help en-sure a safe school bus ride for students each day.”

Canadian Linen and Uniform Service, a lead-ing uniform and linen supply company in North America, took delivery of its first fuel-efficient hy-draulic hybrid system in November. The vehicle, a 2014 Ford F59 chassis with a Morgan Olson Route Star walk-in van body, will be put into delivery service in one of its Toronto, Ontario

branches. Canadian Linen has selected Lightning Hy-brids to provide the hybrid systems that are expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption, reduce brake maintenance costs and cut emissions for cleaner air.

This truck, the first hydraulic hybrid in Ca-nadian Linen’s fleet of ap-proximately 1,900 vehicles in North America, will

achieve better fuel econ-omy than the comparable non-hybrid vehicle because it captures, stores and re-uses the braking energy which is normally wasted in the conventional, non-hybrid vehicle. In addi-tion, the hybrid is cleaner; emitting lower emissions and brake particulates, fur-thering Canadian Linen’s clean operations and com-

mitment to the environ-ment.

“Testing this hydraulic hybrid is a part of a larger company initiative to re-duce energy consumption and our carbon footprint,” said Brian Keegan, Canadi-an Linen’s SVP of Plant Op-erations and Supply Chain. “Last year our company launched a pilot program to test compressed natural gas, propane and plug-in electric vehicles in an effort to positively impact the en-vironment and assess the impact on the company’s overall operations.”

The company has al-ready replaced many of its cargo vans with fuel-efficient sedans and re-routed a majority of its service routes to reduce mileage. It has also in-corporated better internal controls to reduce idling and speeding, and imple-mented better training and communication with driv-ers to increase awareness and promote behavioural change. Canadian Linen also acquired several dou-ble-decker semi-truck trail-ers that have twice the car-go capacity and will greatly reduce fuel and emissions.

The Lightning Hybrids

system was installed at the Morgan Olson facility in Sturgis, MI. Morgan Olson supplies more walk-in vans to the textile rental indus-try than any other manu-facturer in North America. Larry Palmer, Morgan Ol-son’s Director of Fleet Sales states, “More large fleets are interested in these new fuel saving technolo-gies and Morgan Olson is leading the way to incor-porate these systems into our walk-in van builds. We’ve built our legendary walk-in vans on every new technology from electric to CNG and propane, and we believe hydraulic hybrids are another way to reduce emissions and increase fuel savings. We’re looking forward to working with Lightning Hybrids and our loyal partners at Canadian

Linen.”“We are very excited

to launch this project with Canadian Linen and Mor-gan Olson,” stated David Brosky, Vice President of Sales for Lightning Hybrids. “Both companies are prov-ing to be very committed and engaged early adopters of our hybrid technology and they both share our strong commitment to im-prove the energy efficiency and lower the emissions of vocational trucks.”

Lightning Hybrids cur-rently has several systems operating in fleets around the world and expects sig-nificant growth in the next quarter and beyond. The system is made and assem-bled in Loveland, Colorado at Lightning’s advanced manufacturing and engi-neering facilities. b

Kenworth announces three, important new op-tions for its medium duty cabovers that open the door for even more di-verse customer applica-tions and body custom-ization.

The new options for the Kenworth K270 and K370 cabovers include a compact back-of-cab ex-haust system to allow more space for custom bodies; right-side steer for street sweeping, refuse and road maintenance applications; and expanded PACCAR PX-7 engine ratings.

Kenworth’s clear frame rail package, introduced earlier this year, has been improved and provides nearly 12 more inches of space for body instal-lations. The clear frame rail package and exhaust package gives body build-ers even more room for customization. It frees up frame space back-of-cab and allows body builders flexibility with their com-ponents.

“The result is that Ken-worth cabover applica-tions have been extended - literally. This combina-tion also allows for addi-tional transmission PTO clearance, which is a plus, especially for construction applications,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth mar-keting director.

TThe K270 and K370 cabovers can now be speci-fied with the PACCAR PX-7 engine at a new top rating of 260 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque, in addition to a new 200 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque rating. The stan-dard engine rating is 220 hp with 520 lb-ft of torque, mated with an Allison 5-speed transmission.

“More choices for en-gine ratings means fine-tuning the Kenworth cabovers to a customer’s specific application,” ex-plained Swihart. “These are work trucks and the more we offer, the higher the degree of customiza-tion we can provide.”

medium duty convention-al, the K270 and K370 of-fer up to a 30 percent im-provement in curb-to-curb turning, while a 63.4-inch BBC provides an extra 45 inches of payload room. The Kenworth K270 and K370 come with 22.5-inch tire and wheel packages. Kenworth also recently announced a 19.5-inch tire and wheel option for the K270 for easier curb-side pick-up and delivery.

Both truck models of-fer a standard air-ride driver’s seat and 2-person bench seating with stor-age underneath, with the single-seat option now also available. Wheel-bases range from 142 to 242 inches in 12-inch in-crements, and Kenworth cabovers can accommo-date bodies from 16 to 28 feet. A large 2,500-square-inch wraparound wind-shield combines with large side windows to give optimum visibility.

“We continue to evolve our Kenworth K270 and K370 cabovers to serve new applications as these models gain customer recognition in the market-place. There is almost no job these cabovers can’t do,” said Swihart. b

Bridgestone Americas announced that its Wilson, N.C. tire manufacturing plant recently received three Green Factory Environmen-tal Achievement Recogni-tions at Honda’s 22nd an-nual Environmental, Safety and Ergonomics Sympo-sium. The Bridgestone Wilson tire plant, which produces more than 32,000 passenger tires each day, continues to assert itself as a leader in sustainable manu-facturing. Honda recognized the Wilson facility in three categories: energy reduc-tion, natural resources and pollution prevention.

“This is a remark-able accomplishment for Bridgestone and our Wil-son teammates,” said Mi-chael Darr, Wilson Plant Manager, Bridgestone Americas. “We are com-mitted to practicing sus-tainable business and have implemented several initia-tives to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint. We are honoured to be recognized by Honda for our achieve-ments as we work toward

our corporate environmen-tal mission of helping to ensure a healthy environ-ment for current and future generations.”

The Bridgestone Wilson tire plant earned an en-ergy reduction award for achieving Superior Energy Performance (SEP) Mature Pathway ISO 50001 certifi-cation, a management sys-tem model of continuous improvement in energy performance. The plant was the first manufactur-ing facility in the world to attain this certification. Between 2001 and 2011, Bridgestone’s Wilson fa-cility achieved an energy savings of 16.8 percent by switching the primary fuel source to natural gas in boilers, shutting down equipment when not in operation, promptly repair-ing steam and air leaks, in-sulating piping across the plant and executing several lighting optimization proj-ects.

The Honda award for natural resources was pre-sented to the Wilson team

for its community educa-tion program that teaches area students about land and wildlife preservation. Bridgestone designated 350-acres of the Wilson plant site to create the Wil-son Plant Freedom Wildlife Habitat and Refuge which is a Corporate Lands for Learning program certi-fied by the Wildlife Habi-tat Council. In accordance with Bridgestone’s global environmental mission, the land serves as a classroom for many community-focused educational and preservation activities.

Pollution prevention recognition was awarded for the plant’s zero waste to landfill achievement, a claim validated by Under-writers Laboratories (UL) in January 2014. The Wil-son plant is the first man-ufacturing facility of any kind to receive this valida-tion from UL. The Wilson plant reached zero waste to landfill in early 2013 and has kept that rate intact to date.

Bridgestone enjoys a long-standing, positive relationship with Honda, supplying original equip-ment and replacement fitments for many of the manufacturer’s vehicle models. b

The Mack Trucks His-torical Museum celebrated its 30th anniversary on Nov. 9th. Incorporated as a non-profit corpora-tion in 1984, the museum commemorates 114 years of Mack history through photos, memorabilia and a collection of vintage Mack truck models.

“Through its many ex-hibits and displays, the Mack Museum brings to life the rich history of Mack Trucks,” said Stephen Roy, President of Mack Trucks North American Sales and Marketing. “From Mack’s beginning in Brooklyn to our current truck models, the museum chronicles how Mack became the American truck you can count on.”

The museum is known worldwide as the ultimate source for information about Mack and Mack products. Nearly 6,000 people from all parts of the world visit the museum

each year. Mack enthusi-asts from Australia and the Netherlands are the most frequent foreign visitors.

“We also receive thou-sands of requests about specific vehicles,” said Don Schumaker, curator of the Mack Trucks Historical Museum. “If you have a vehicle identification num-ber, chances are pretty good that we have informa-tion in our archives.”

Mack’s connection to Hollywood movies such as Cars, Transformers and Die Hard with a Vengeance is on display, as well as the oldest existing Mack vehicle: a 40-horsepower, 28-passenger sightseeing bus. The museum also helps host Trucktober-fest, an annual apprecia-tion event for the antique truck club organizations that support the museum. More than 300 people and 100 vintage trucks take part in this celebration of Mack heritage.

The Mack Trucks His-torical Museum is housed in the Mack Customer Center in Allentown, PA. The Mack Customer Cen-ter offers a memorable experience that explores the history of Mack and demonstrates the industry-leading manufacturing techniques that have kept Mack at the forefront of heavy-duty trucking. In ad-dition to the museum, the Mack Customer Center is home to the Mack Heritage Center, a Mack showroom and a performance track where customers can test drive Mack vehicles. b

Under the leader-ship of Federal Minis-ter of Transport, Lisa Raitt, and Provincial Transportation Minister, Todd Stone, and after months of consultation with Vince Ready, driv-ers, trucking companies, terminal operators, ship-pers and others, a new system of permitting container trucks to enter port property is being in-troduced.

The changes will achieve a balance be-tween the supply of trucks and the amount of container trucking work available at the port. They will also en-sure drivers are paid fairly and have the op-portunity to make a de-cent living.

The new program is a combination of higher participation charges, enhanced truck age re-quirements aligned with Port Metro Vancouver’s current environmental standards, an expand-

ed provincial audit and oversight framework, improved tracking and measurement of port ef-ficiency, and trucking company sponsorship of owner operator drivers.

Specific details of the reforms have been com-municated to trucking stakeholders and it is ex-pected the changes will be finalized along with related provincial regula-tions in the coming days. The new system is ex-pected to take effect Feb-ruary 1, 2015.

Higher participation charges will be used to fund the new system on a cost recovery basis, to reduce the number of trucking companies from over 150 that currently serve the port, and to ensure drivers are appro-priately protected from rampant undercutting that has created wide-spread driver discontent.

Registration and li-censing in the new sys-tem will be required only

for those requiring ac-cess to port marine con-tainer terminals. Drivers no longer registered to access port marine con-tainer terminals will be eligible to participate in a support program to help them transition out of container trucking and are, of course, free to provide driving services elsewhere.

“It is expected these changes and others im-plemented as a result of the Joint Action Plan between the federal and provincial government and trucker representa-tives will not only bring stability to the port, but will also provide a level of container truck man-agement that is unprec-edented at other ports around the world,” said Peter Xotta, Vice Presi-dent, Operations and Planning for Port Metro Vancouver. Other chang-es already implemented or planned include ex-tended terminal hours, wait-time payments to drivers, a robust res-ervation system, the whistleblower Drayage ConfidenceLine, and GPS monitoring of all truck movements. b

Dana Holding Corpora-tion has published a new white paper for the com-mercial trucking industry that addresses the need for fleets and original-equip-ment manufacturers to properly manage the higher driveline torques that are resulting from the increas-ing use of more fuel-efficient downsped engines.

Titled “The Right So-lution for Downsped En-gines,” the paper is free and may be downloaded at: www.danacv.com/downspeedingwhitepaper.

Authored by Andy Nie-man, Vice President of Global Engineering for Dana Commercial Vehicle Technologies, it describes the motivations behind downspeeding, what con-stitutes downspeeding, and fuel consumption and en-vironmental benefits. The piece goes on to explain how the resulting higher torques place added stress on a vehicle’s axle, drive-shaft, and inter-axle.

Different strategies are

then presented for managing the higher torques, including Dana’s recommendation for specifying proper driveline components. These com-ponents, the paper explains, need to be carefully engi-neered, thoroughly tested, and proven to be fully capa-ble of delivering the neces-sary performance in a high-torque environment.

The Dana system optimized for engine downspeeding includes the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle, the SPL 350 driveshaft, and the SPL 250 inter-axle shaft.

The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle is now available with ratios that support the engine downspeeding efforts of truck manufac-turers, including the indus-try’s fastest axle ratio of 2.26:1. The Spicer Advan-TEK 40 tandem axle was developed with faster axle ratios to handle the higher axle input torques that re-sult from lowering engine rpm at highway cruise speed, which enables in-

creased overall vehicle ef-ficiency of up to 2 percent.

Ultimately, the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle can help a truck operating in a typi-cal linehaul duty cycle save more than 2,700 gallons of diesel fuel over a five-year time span. This translates into up to $10,000 in esti-mated operating savings and a reduction of over 60,000 lbs in carbon diox-ide output when compared with most tandem axle of-ferings on the road today.

The other piece of Dana’s engine downspeeding solu-tion is the SPL 350 drive-shaft and SPL 250 inter-axle shaft, which have been en-gineered to maximize the efficiency and durability of the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle and low rpm engines. The most robust heavy-duty driveshaft and inter-axle shaft in their class, the SPL 350 driveshaft and SPL 250 inter-axle shaft offer more power density, 40 per-cent more torque carrying capability, and double the bearing life over competitive designs. In fact, they are the only driveshaft and inter-ax-le shaft on the market today that can supply up to a mil-lion miles of life expectancy in a downsped engine pow-ertrain. b

Detroit Diesel Corpo-ration (Detroit) recently announced that the Intel-ligent Powertrain Manage-ment (IPM) system will be standard on all Detroit DT12 automated manual transmissions paired with any heavy-duty Detroit en-gine, beginning in March 2015. IPM helps the pow-ertrain operate as efficient-ly as possible, based on the truck’s momentum gener-ated by the terrain.

The new Intelligent Powertrain Management integrates pre-loaded terrain maps and GPS into engine and transmission functions to know the route ahead, up to one mile. The main goal of IPM is to use the mo-mentum of the truck most efficiently to reduce fuel consumption. It achieves this by preventing unnec-essary shifts, predictively engine braking and fuel-ing, shifting optimally, and

precisely controlling eCoast events. IPM is automatically ‘on’ once the driver engages cruise control, so benefits of IPM are variable based on the percent of time the driv-er operates in cruise control, and the variably of the route traveled. Since Intelligent Powertrain Management uses the momentum of the truck to most efficiently move down the road, a route with varied topogra-phy (but no extreme change in elevations) provides the optimal opportunity for IPM to improve fuel economy.

IPM also integrates seamlessly with the new Detroit Assurance suite of

safety systems to provide virtually effort free driving when cruise control is en-gaged. Safety is always the first priority, so while As-surance operates in tandem with IPM, safety actions al-ways take priority over fuel economy. With these two systems integrated togeth-er, the IPM, Active Brake Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control work to not only ensure the drivers safety but also to provide smooth-est and most fuel efficient driving available today.

“Intelligent Powertrain Management technology employs many of the same behaviours that an experi-

enced driver uses behind the wheel, but in many situations take actions that even the most experienced driver would be unable to employ such as engaging eCoast before cresting a hill. Ultimately actions like this will help all drivers achieve greater efficiency with less fatigue,” said Brad Williamson, Man-ager, Engine and Compo-nent Marketing for Daim-ler Trucks North America. “We want to give our cus-tomers the most advanced technologies available to lower to their Real Cost of Ownership, and IPM is a key part of that strategy.”

For example, when ap-proaching a grade, IPM will increase road speed to allow the vehicle to climb the hill with the fewest downshifts possible. IPM will also engage eCoast or stop fueling the engine be-fore cresting a hill, using the truck’s momentum in-stead. When heading down a hill, IPM plans for this by automatically accelerat-ing to increase the truck’s momentum, based on the approaching terrain. IPM will also keep eCoast en-gaged for longer periods of time with fewer inter-ruptions, further benefiting fuel economy. b
