TILLINGANDCULTIVATING

Keepawayfromrotatingtines. Rotatingtineswill causeseriouspersonalinjury.

Useyour machineto break up sod, pre-pare seedbedsand for cultivating in gar-dens and flower beds. It is easyto op-erate,but it is important that you start outslowly and readthis Sectionthoroughlybefore putting it to use. Let the machinedo most of the work. Thetines will pullthe machineforward, letting you adjustforward speed by pressing down or liftingthe handlebars.

1. Roll the machineto the work area.

2. Adjust the tilling depth to the desiredposition (see Pre-Start Preparation,pre-vious page).

3. Start the engine (see Stopping andStarting the Engine, previous page).

Stand behind the handlebar and pushdown on the bar to raise the tines off theground. Squeezethe Throttle/TinesLever- the engineshould speed up andthe tines start rotating. ReleasetheThrottle/TinesLever to return to idle, thetines should stop rotating or they mayrotate very slowly. Lowering them backto the ground should stop any rotation.

NOTE: If tines continue to rotate whenengine is idling, either the idle speed istoo high or the centrifugal clutch is mal-functioning. If this occurs, contact theFactoryor your local authorized dealer.

4. Squeezethe Throttle/TinesLevertostart the tines rotating. Lower the tines tobegin tilling. Firmlyhold the handlebar toprevent the machinefrom moving for-ward too quickly and to allow enoughtime for the tines to dig deeply enough.Adjust enginespeed to suit the tillingconditions. Rememberthat the rotatingtines helpto pull the machineforward.Useslower speedsand a shallow depthsetting when learning to use the unit andwheneveryou are tilling on hard, rough oruneven ground.

5. Do not try to till too deeply in the firstpass through sod or very hard ground. Ifthe machinejumps or bucks, use a shal-lower depth setting and reduce the enginespeed. With eachsuccessive pass, tillmore deeply.

6. Apply downward pressure on the han-dlebars for shallower tilling. Lilt the han-dlebars to dig more deeply. If the ma-chine stays andtills in one spot, tryswinging the handlebarsfrom side to sideto start moving forward again.

7. Foreasier tilling, water very hard soil afew days before tilling. Avoid workingsoggy or wet soil. Wait a day or two afterheavyrain for the ground to dry.

Cultivating1. Cultivating is shallow tilling that dis-rupts weeds and aeratesthe upper crustof soil.

2. Do not till deeper than 1"-2"to avoidinjuringnearby plant roots. Cultivateoften,so that weeds do not grow largeand cause needlesstangling in the tines.

3. With careful planning, you can spacethe seed rows far enough apart to allowsufficient room for the machineto culti-vate alter the plants have grown.

AdjustingTinePatternsDependingupon the tilling project, youhavea choice of three tine patterns:

Wide (Standard)Tine Pattern- Asshipped from the factory, the unit is setup for general tilling and cultivating. This10"wide tine pattern (the maximum tillingwidth) uses all four tine sections(A, Figure9). See TineRemovalandln-stallation in Section 5 for detailed informa-tion on how to set up this tine pattern.

Narrow Tine Pattern- Fora narrow,4-1/2" tilling width, removethe outsidetine section on the left- and right-sides(B, Figure9). See TineRemovaland In-stallation in Section 5 for detailed informa-tion on how to set up this tine pattern.

StonySoil Tine Pattern- When tillingdeeply instony soil, stones may becomejammed betweenthe inner tines and themachinehood. This pattern swaps thetwo inner tines to minimizejamming (c,Figure9). See Tinet?emovaland Installa-tion in Section 5 for detailed informationon how to set up this tine pattern.

Section4: Operation

Tilling Patterns1. When preparing a seedbed,go over the same path twice inthe first row, then overlap one-half the machinewidth on eachsuccessivepass (Figure 10).

2. Alter going up and down the rows in one direction, makesecond passesat a right angleacross the original passes(Figure 11). Again, overlap each pass to thoroughly pulverizethe entire seedbed area. In very hardground, it may take threeor four passes before the desired depth is achieved.

3. If your garden is not wide enough to till lengthwise andthencrosswise, then first overlap by one-half the machinewidth, followed by successive passes at one-quarter machinewidth. This overlapping method assures thorough tilling.

EQUIPMENTMAINTENANCE

Transmission Maintenance

Thetransmission was lubricated at thefactory and should not require any furtherlubrication.

However, you should check the lubricantlevel after the first five (5) hours of opera-tion and every twenty-five (25) operatinghours thereafter. If needed, use a high-quality, automotive-grade petroleum-basegrease.

Before tipping engine or equipment toservice transmission, drain fuel fromtank by runningengine until fuel tank isempty.

Tocheckthe transmission:

1. Stop the engine, let it cool and discon-nect the spark plug wire.2. Placethe machine down on its left sideso the right end of the tine shaft faces up.

3. Removethe right-side tines (see TineRemoval and Installation in this Section).

4. Cleanthe transmission housing.

To lubricatethe transmission:

1. Placethe nozzleof a standard greasegun (D, Figure14) firmly against the rimof the middle hole (B) and add greaseuntil it begins to seepfrom the bottomhole (A). Reinstallthe plug in the bottomhole (A). Next apply greaseto the top fillhole (C) until it begins to seepfrom themiddle hole (B). Reinstallthe plugs in themiddle (B) andtop (C) holes.

2. Before reinstalling the tines, use a finegradesandpaper to clean any rust off thetine shaft. Apply a few drops of oil to thetine shaft to makefuture tine removaleasier.

Other Lubrication Points• HandlebarAdjustment Knobs: Spray

occasionally with a silicone typelubricant.

• Throttle/TinesLeverCable: Squeezethelever closed and spray a lubricant intothe cable area.

• TineShaft: Alter each use, removethetines, clean the tine shaft with sandpaperand apply a light coatof oil to the tineshaft.

Engine LubricationThe engineis a two-cycle engine. Lubri-cation is provided by mixing two-cycle oilwith unleadedregular gasoline as de-scribed in the AssemblySection. At-tempting to operatethe engineon gaso-line alonewill causethe engineto over-heat andseizeup.

Engine Air FilterIt is extremely important that air filter ser-vice be performed according to the main-tenanceschedule. Refer to the separateEngineOwner's Manual for inspection andcleaning instructions.

IMPORTANT:Neverrun enginewithout airfilter assemblyproperly installed.

ir !IiY_Vl-'I:_L_IIL_[fll Beforeinspecting, cleaning orservicingthe machine, shutoff engine, wait for movingparts to stop, dis-connectsparkplug wire and movewire awayfromsparkplug.

Failure to followthese instructionscan result in seriouspersonal injuryor propertydamage.

If the engine is running poorly or has lowpower while tilling, an adjustment to thecarburetor may solvethe problem. How-ever, first inspect and service the sparkplug andthe air filter before making acarburetor adjustment. If the enginecon-tinues to run poorly (and the fuel mixtureis fresh), proceedto the following carbu-retor adjustment instructions. This fac-tory-engineered instruction is designedtoprovide continued optimum engine oper-ating performance after the enginebreak-in period, which is approximately 5 to 10hours. The adjustment, when properlyperformed as described below, will notvoid the enginewarranty. A commonscrewdriver is needed. If you prefer, seean authorizedengine dealer foradjustment.

Prior to CarburetorAdjustment:

Thetemperatureof the muffler and adja-cent engine areas may exceed 150OF(65°C). Contactmaycauseburns. Avoidthese areas. Remove the spark pluglead andgroundthe lead to the enginetopreventaccidentalstarts and fires.

Failure to do this could cause personalinjury.

1. Let enginecool for 30 minutes beforecontinuing.

2. From the operator's position behind thehandlebars, lay the machinedown on itsleft side (muffler side).

CarburetorAdJustment:1. Locatethe carburetor idle mixturescrew (Figure 15). It is directly under theair filter and is black.Do Not AdJustSilver-ColoredScrew.2. Turn the black idle mixture screw 1/16of a turn clockwise.

3. Return the unit to its normal uprightoperating position and reconnect thespark plug wire.

If the enginecontinues to run poorly, con-tact an authorizedengine dealer.

Spark PlugInspect the spark plug annually or every100 operating hours according to the in-structions in the separate EngineOwner'sManual. Checkthat the gap is set at .030".For replacementuse Champion RCJ-6Yorequivalent (a resistor spark plug must beused for replacement).

Cooling SystemIt is important to frequently check andremove grass clippings, dirt and otherdebris that accumulateson the engine, cooling fins, air intakescreen and onleversand linkages. This helps to ensureadequateair cooling and correct enginespeed.

TINE REMOVALAND INSTALLATION

Avoid contactwith the cutting edges onthe tines.

To avoid personal injurywhen removingor installing tines, wear heavy workgloves. The engine must be off, allmoving parts stopped, and the sparkplug wire disconnectedfrom the sparkplugand movedaway from the plug.

The tines will wear with use and theyshould be replaced if tilling seems to takelonger than usual or if the soil is notbeing mixed as thoroughly. Also, in addi-tion to the standard 10"tilling width tineconfiguration, the tines can be arrangedin two other configurations: (1) A narrow,41/2"tilling width for smaller areasand (2)A special pattern for stony soil conditions.

Figure 16:Remove ring lockpin (A) to takeoff tines.

IMPORTANT:The ring lock pin (A, Figure16) is under spring tension - wear glovesto protect your fingers when removing orreplacing the ring lock pin.

Arranging Tines for Narrow Tilling1. Propthe machineforward so it restson the front of the tubular carryinghandle. The work surface should beflatandfirm.

• Never store your equipment whenthere is fuel mixture in the fuel tank.

• Never place your equipment near anysource of sparksor open flame (suchas from a hot water heater, a spaceheateror clothesdryer).

Failure to comply can result in seriouspersonalinjury or propertydamage.

STORAGE

IMPORTANT:It is importantto preventgum deposits from forming inessentialfuel system parts such as carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage. Also, experienceindicatesthat alcohol-blendedfuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol)can attract moisturewhich leadsto separationand formationof acids during storage. Acidic gas candamagethe fuel system of an enginewhilein storage.

Off-Season Storage Procedure1. Drain the fuel tank of all of the gaso-line/two-cycle oil mixture. NOTE:Do notuse a fuel mixture that is older than oneseason in order to avoid varnish depositsthroughout the fuel system. Dispose ofthe fuel mixture properly.

2. Start engine and run until fuel mixtureis used up. Thiswill prevent poor perfor-mancefrom stale fuel when your equip-ment is taken out of storage.

NOTE: If "Gasohol" has beenused, com-plete above instructions and then put 1/2pint of gasoline properly mixed with two-cycle oil (see FuelMixing Chart) into fueltank and repeat above instructions.

NOTE: Fuelstabilizer (such as STA-BIL)is an acceptablealternative in minimizingthe formation of fuel gum deposits duringstorage. Add stabilizer to the fuel mixturein the fuel tank or the fuel storage con-tainer. Always follow the mix ratio in-structions on the stabilizer container.Run engine at least 10 minutes alteradding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer toreach the carburetor. Do not drain thegas tank and carburetor if using fuelstabilizer.

3. Letengine cool down after fuel mixturehas been used up. Clean dirt and debrisfrom engine cooling fins, linkage andother enginesurfaces.

4. Pull starter handle slowly until resis-tance is felt due to compression pressure, then stop. Releasestarter tension slowlyto prevent enginefrom reversing due tocompression pressure. Thisposition willclose both the intake and exhaust ports toprevent corrosion of the piston andcylinder bore.5. Removetines. Cleanall soil anddebrisfrom dust covers and tine shaft. Lubri-catetine shaft with light oil. Replacetines.

6. Coverengineand store equipment in adry, sheltered location.
