Fashion savvy Ten News
Weather Presenter Kate
Freebairn has been named
this year’s Fashion at The
Races ambassador and is looking
forward to embracing all the
role has to offer.
Adelaide-born Kate joined
Network Ten as a News Reporter
in 2007 and took on the role of
Weather Presenter in April 2013.
She has frequented country and
city race meetings since she was a
child and has a keen eye for fashion
– hosting and judging numerous
fashion events across the State.
“I am so excited to be the new
Fashion at The Races ambassador.
I’ve found the competition really
lifts the bar at race days across
the State – it’s a great excuse to
get dressed up,” Kate said.
Racing’s most stylish attendees
will be taking cues from Kate as
the inaugural Fashion at The
Races competition kicks off
again for 2014-15.
Sixteen lucky finalists will be
selected from Fashion at The
Races heats at race meetings
throughout the year to compete
for the grand prize, culminating
on the Fashion at The Races State
Final at Sportingbet SA Derby Day
in May 2015.
Kate made her debut last month
at the Scott Group of Companies
Mt Gambier Gold Cup – the first
of many race days she will be
attending throughout the year.
And what is she on the lookout
for this season?
“I always have an eye out for
unique styles and classic outfits,
which is what Fashion at The
Races is all about,” Kate said.
“I’ve noticed South Australian
racegoers have really stepped it
up over the past few years, so I’m
looking forward to seeing what
they have to offer.
“I prefer quality over quantity.
I’d rather spend a bit more to
invest in a classic piece of
clothing that I can keep for years,
than fill my wardrobe with on
trend pieces I will only wear once
before they go out of fashion.”
In the cooler months Kate said
she’s keen to see contestants
having some fun accessorising
with things like gloves and
scarves.
“My advice to Fashion at The
Races entrants is be true to your
own personal style and don’t be
afraid to stand out,” she said.
“Remember to dress for a
traditional race day and not for
a night out, and invest in a great
head piece – it can make or break
your outfit!”
This season, the grand prize
winner will walk away with a
brand new Alfa Romeo MiTo, while
the runner-up will have a year’s
worth of racewear looked after,
taking away a $3000 wardrobe
and styling session from fashion
partner Perri Cutten.
In addition to taking home the
individual prizes provided by each
club, all regional winners will be
treated to two nights’
accommodation at Oaks Plaza
Pier Glenelg and hospitality for
two at SA Derby Day in May 2015.

T he carnival, which includes
Schweppes Oaks Ladies Day,
Sportingbet SA Derby Day and
Tapestry Wines Goodwood
Day, saw some of Australian
racing’s biggest names descend
on Morphettville to chase
Group 1 success.
Schweppes Oaks Day kicked off
the carnival in great fashion with
two Group One races keeping the
oncourse punters happy and the
finale of the Statewide Fashion at
The Races competition keeping
all the fashionistas entertained.
Being Ladies’ Day it was only
fitting that racing’s first lady,
Gai Waterhouse, would enjoy
success. Her mare, Driefontein,
crossed first in the weight for age
Robert Sangster Stakes. In the
other feature of the day, The
Australasian Oaks, May’s Dream
for trainer Darren Weir saw off the
appropriately named Star Fashion
in front of a strong crowd.
The second weekend of the
carnival, Sportingbet SA Derby
Day, was held in wet and blustery
conditions that saw punters
rugging up and riders going
wide to try and find some
clear ground.
In the Group 1 Sportingbet SA
Derby rider Dom Tourneur went
against the trend of the day,
riding Scratchy Bottom hard
against the fence. The bold move
looked to have paid off until
Richard Jolly’s Kushadasi, bobbed
up on the line to win by a hair.
Smokin’ Joey’s upset win in the
Tapestry Wines Goodwood was
the crescendo to the TattsBet
Adelaide Autumn Carnival. The
rank outsider stormed home
to edge out last year’s winner
Platelet who was looking to
create history as the first ever
back-to-back winner of the race.
It was trainer Wez Hunter’s
first ever Group 1 success
and a fitting end to another
great carnival.

A family that races together
stays together! The Walters
family from Mount Gambier
are heavily involved in racing;
patriarch Wayne Walters is a
successful trainer and his two
daughters Kate and Melissa are
riding high in the saddle.
At the recent Millicent Cup, the
family had a memorabele day with
the sisters taking out three races
of a possible eight including a
one, two double in the third race.
With two wins under her belt,
Kate paired with her father to
take out the feature race, the
coveted Millicent Cup. The win
on Luckzat was no mean feat for
Kate who had only given birth to
her first child, Peyton, four months
prior. It was an emotional family
that took to the podium to accept
the Cup with Kate being joined by
her father, sister and fellow
jockey (and husband) Kane Post.
The Walters’ winning ways
continued two weeks later at
the Scott Group of Companies
Mount Gambier Gold Cup. Kate
again guided Luckzat to the
front to share the spoils of the
$44,000 race.
Luckzat is the second galloper
in the past decade to take out the
Millicent/Mount Gambier cup
double, with the Darryl Dodson
trained Montjeu Madame also
successful in 2010.

The heroes of South Australia’s thoroughbred racing industry – past

“It’s an opportunity to look back on the past season and recognise the
people, the horses and the moments that make racing the unique sport it
is,” said Thoroughbred Racing SA Chief Executive Jim Watters.
“All of the awards incite much friendly rivalry and it’s fantastic to have the industry come together
to honour the top-performers for the season.”

THE PADDOCK
Hundreds of racegoers, looking to
socialise in a sophisticated setting,
entered The Paddock over the
Easter long weekend.
It elevated Oakbank’s profile
in the eyes of racegoers, reviving
the grandeur of picnic racing and
revitalising the Oakbank Easter
Racing Carnival for 2014.
DJs spun vinyl records to create
a laidback jazz, funk and soul
soundtrack while guests engaged
in some friendly rivalry playing
croquet and bocce.
Food and beverage vendors
offered racegoers an array of
delicious options in between
gallops, with gourmet local produce
served picnic-style on blankets or
al fresco on wooden tables.
Premium Eden Valley wines
from Yalumba and Jansz Premium
Cuvée were served alongside a
range of decadent cocktails
courtesy of Woodford Reserve
and Brown-Forman.
The Paddock embraced everything
special about Oakbank – autumn,
country racing, picnicking with
friends, eating gourmet food
and enjoying great wines.
Yalumba, Heineken and Brown-
Forman were key supporters of
The Paddock in 2014.
AT THIS YEAR’S OAKBANK EASTER RACING CARNIVAL, BRAND NEW PRECINCT THE PADDOCK CELEBRATED EVERYTHING COUNTRY CHIC AND DELIVERED AN EXPERIENCE THAT WENT BEYOND RACING.

O f the 16 finalists it was Adelaide mum
Jayd Foote, representing Murray
Bridge Racing Club, who took out
the coveted title of South Australia’s
best dressed racegoer at Schweppes Oaks
Day at Morphettville Racecourse.
The prize she was vying for; business class
return flights for two to Paris, five nights’
accommodation in a five star hotel, a new
set of luggage, two days of luxury fashion
tours and tickets to a Parisian fashion show.
Jayd wowed the judges with her modern
ensemble, pairing a Ginger and Smart animal
print dress with striking headpiece from
Peacock Millinery featuring Redtail Black
Cockatoo feathers. In what was almost a
photo finish moment, fellow contestant
Claudia Rogosich was declared runner-up.
Shining in a divine dress and carefully
selected millinery, she received an
extravagant $5,000 shopping spree at King
William, Hyde Park for her efforts.
Each of the finalists had been declared
fashion victors at various race meets around
the State over the past 12 months – an
achievement in itself.
It was local fashion designer Liza Emanuele,
Antimo Iannella from the Advertiser and
Kate Freebairn from Ten News who had
the unenviable task of judging the stunning
group of contenders.
They were judged on the appropriateness
of their outfit for the event, originality

and confidence, attention to detail with
accessories, appreciation of current fashion

Thoroughbred Racing SA Marketing
Manager Jane Wellington, also a judge,
said the decision was not a simple one.
“The finalists looked incredible, it was clear
that they had put in an impressive amount of
effort to take home the ultimate accolade
and five star holiday,” she said.
“We were looking for that real ‘wow-
factor’ – someone who dressed with class,
style and a touch of personality and Jayd is
to be congratulated on her superb personal
presentation – she was most definitely
deserving of the title.”
Hosted by Mix 102.3’s Jodie Oddy,
former My Kitchen Rules contestant Jenna
Marie, aka Little Miss Cupcake, and singer/
songwriter Cat Southern were among
the local names at the luncheon
celebrating Jayd’s win.
Guests were entertained by a fashion
parade featuring racewear designs from
up and coming TAFE SA students and
styles by King William Road traders.
The 2013-14 Fashion at The Races season
was supported by King William Road traders,
Oaks Hotels and Resorts and the South
Australian Jockey Club.
The 2014-15 season of Fashion at The Races has already begun, kicking off at the Scott Group of Companies Mt Gambier Gold Cup in May.

Horse
RATHER THAN CANTERING THROUGH LIFE, TURN THINGS UP A NOTCH, AND GALLOP FULL FORCE INTO THE FUTURE.
T his Chinese New Year more
than a billion Chinese people
waved goodbye to the Year
of the Snake and welcomed
the Year of the Horse. The Chinese
animal zodiac runs on a 12-year
cycle which interacts with the
five elements: wood, metal, fire,
water and earth. January 31
marked the first day of Chinese
New Year in 2014, the day on
which the year of the wood horse
took over from the water snake.
Those born in 1918, 1930, 1942,
1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and
2014 are said to possess certain
qualities reminiscent of the
majestic, four-legged creature.
Their energy is free-spirited,
wild, wilful and independent.
Quick-witted and gifted,
movement is everything for them.
Freedom and independence are
essential and they tend to act on
impulse. This of course means there
is an element of unpredictability
about Horse people, much like
the outcome of a big race.
Chinese people believe horses
are born to race or travel, which
is why Horse people tend to leave
home young.
The horse is a highly intuitive
animal, so people born in the
Horse year follow their hunches,
with keen judgment and a natural
intuition that helps them make
the right decisions throughout
their life.
People born in the Year of the
Horse are cheerful, perceptive
and talented and love to be in
the centre of a crowd.
They are independent, down-
to-earth and very appealing to
others. Adventurers at heart who
love to travel; they are free spirits,
graceful and happy people.
This year is specifically the Year
of the Wooden Horse, which
represents fire energy. It is believed
to be a time of unexpected
adventure, surprising romance
and fast victories – perfect for
anyone in the thoroughbred
racing industry!
On a global scale, the Year of
the Horse will bring strength to
some world economies while
others experience economic
chaos and collapse. Under the
Horse’s strong influence there
is no middle ground.
It’s set to be a wild ride as the
world changes, and changes fast.
Rather than cantering through
life, turn things up a notch, and
gallop full force into the future.
If it’s right then there’s nothing
to think about. Just follow
your instincts.
It’s about freedom, enjoying life
and life’s adventures.
The Horse year is the time to
act fast, buy that home, launch that
business, travel the world, make a
big purchase, get a promotion at
work, have a breakthrough – take
a leap and fly.
GAI WATERHOUSEBorn in 1954, Gai possesses many qualities characteristic of those born in the Year of the Horse. Before settling in Australia to pursue a career as a trainer, Gai spent time living overseas and has loved travel ever since. It is through sheer determination, energy and risk taking that she has come to be one of the nation’s all-time leading trainers. Predictions for this Horse year suggest that Gai will be in for some more welcome victories.
FAMOUS PEOPLE BORN IN THE YEAR OF THE HORSEEmma Watson, Denzel Washington, Ashton Kutcher, Harrison Ford and Oprah Winfrey.

FLAWLESS ON FILM
South Australia is often
referred to as Australia’s
gateway to the outback,
providing a sense of
isolation despite being within
easy reach of Adelaide.
Earlier this year, Australian
director David Michôd chose to
shoot his post-catastrophic thriller
The Rover (2014) in the Flinders
Ranges. The film, which stars Guy
Pearce and Robert Pattinson, was
met with rave reviews at the
Cannes Film Festival in May.
The Rover pays homage to the
unforgiving nature of Australian
outback terrain, with the sheer
expansiveness of the Flinders
Ranges making it well suited to
films that fit the drama, thriller
or horror brief.
The Rover’s producer, Liz Watts,
said South Australia’s dynamic
blend of landscapes was an ideal
fit for the film’s dark plotline.
“The ability of South Australia
to offer dramatic, unique and
stunning landscapes, mixed with

towns of distinctive original
character, all supported by world
class facilities, was a major part
of our decision to shoot in South
Australia,” she said.
Renowned Australian director
Peter Weir recognised the
capabilities of the South Australian
landscape decades ago, choosing
to shoot three iconic films there.
Despite each of the projects
calling for entirely different
landscapes, the State’s rural areas
delivered each and every time.
“The landscape of South
Australia evokes memories of
other times and other places,”
Peter said. “It gave me the chrome
yellow plains in Picnic at Hanging
Rock; a good match for the dry
Turkish landscape in Gallipoli;
desert scenes and a perfect
urban setting in The Last Wave.”
Fellow Australian filmmaker
Phillip Noyce joined Peter in
commending the State’s diverse
range of locations.
“South Australia is blessed with
a wide variety of locations, from
parched desert to green rolling
hills, intensely wooded forests
and intact period urban locations,”
Phillip said.
He filmed Rabbit-Proof Fence
(2002) in the country town of
Parachilna, truly capturing the
rich tones of the Australian bush
setting with the help of a South
Australian team.
“South Australian crews play
their part with precision – their
effort, commitment and
enthusiasm remain undiminished
throughout the project,” he said.
“Shooting doesn’t get much
better than this.”
Racing enthusiasts can judge the
State’s spectacular outback scenery
for themselves at the City of Port
Augusta Cup (July 6), the Quorn
Hotel Cup (June 14) and the BHP
Billiton Roxby Downs Outback Cup
(August 2).

SAVOURY
GUINNESS MUSTARD
A fantastic condiment for a St. Patrick’s Day style dinner of corned beef and cabbage. Via The Parsley Thief
BEER CAN CHICKEN
Beer can chicken is moist and so easy to make at home. You can make it in a conventional oven or in a barbeque. Add herbs and spices or keep it simple and let the flavours of the chicken shine through. Via Another Pint Please
IRISH BEEF STEW
A dish to warm the soul on those chilly winter days. Comfort food at its very best. Via Taste Food Blog
SWEET
IRISH POACHED PEARS WITH CHOCOLATE SAUCE AND GUINNESS SORBET
This unusual recipe takes inspiration from classic Poires Belle Hélène, adding a distinctly Irish twist.Via Beyond Wonderful
BEERAMISU
This take on Tiramisu strays pretty far from the traditional. It calls for Guinness and Irish Cream instead of coffee and Marsala, but the requisite creamy, soft layers will surely please anyone crazy for this Italian dessert.Via Serious Eats
If you are not a beer fan, do not worry. The Guinness is not overpowering. Much of the alcohol is cooked off and the slight bitterness of the stout beer is mellowed out by the chocolate and the sweet butterscotch. Via the Little Epicurean
GUINNESS DRAUGHT CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
Guinness Draught may surprise many with its hint of caramel sweetness and coffee tones. It is these wonderful flavours that make Guinness Draught the ideal ingredient for rich, dark desserts, like the popular after dinner treat.Via The Guinness Storehouse
